Kyle Wood Recants?
— Ace

Damn it, I laid off this story for like three days because of the "possible fake report" possibility. I didn't even want to be the grouch to bring it up.

So after three days, I posted it.

So of course the police now say Kyle Wood has recanted.

In an interview this afternoon with Madison Police detectives, the victim in this case recanted his earlier statements in regards to this crime. This crime, alleged to have occurred on High Street in the South Police District, will be cleared as "Unfounded" for case reporting purposes.

Via @verumserum.

Ech. So are the texts fake, too? If you fake one thing you'll probably fake another.

Jeeze Louise. I was thisclose to not having to issue this egg-faced retraction.

So...did he get beaten or not? I presume police can tell if you have in fact been assaulted.

Though I guess it could be similiar to Jim Carrey's self assau;t in Liar Liar.

reposting from previous thread.. geez.. you people have the attention span of a gnat.

So.. I have a question. If this storm leaves so many without power can the elections be suspended or delayed? I know someone said if Obama tried to delay them nationally it would kill him politically but can a local township, city etc suspend a national election? From what I am seeing now this is looking really, really bad. Already two million without power. How can this affect things Nov 6?

35 I know some folks do not like Althouse, here, but this is another of those "Halperin" posts about why they voted for obama, and now they wouldn't in a million years: Camille Paglia, who voted for Obama in '08, delivers a fine rant about why she's not voting for him this time. The common theme seems to be, barry would be a "moderate" and he would not be "partisan." haha http://althouse.blogspot.ca/2012/10/camille-paglia-who-voted-for-obama-in.html It's an interesting read, none-the-less. 89 I can respect Micky Kaus because he's not uniformly stupid and goes with the truth versus his predilections.

Much more wrong in who he supports than what he thinks, although the former requires the latter sometimes.

For example, he believes Romney more likely to achieve comprehensive immigration reform (which not doing is a big thing with him, so it gives him cover to support Obama). Well, maybe, but many of the same effects will be achieved with Obama regardless of whether it's legislated.

If the Republican Party didn't have some of the intellectual embarrassments it does, Kaus could probably make the leap to RINO. I much prefer him to someone like David Brooks.

Hey, he stands up for Ann Coulter, and that take cojones.

114 To atone for the Kyle Wood fiasco, post this:

Fox New essentially confirms that there was an AC-130 Spectre gunship on scene at Benghazi.

"Upon returning to the CIA annex with survivors, Griffin said one of the soldiers got on the radio and asked, frantically, at midnight: 'Where the blank is the Spectre?'"

(For link, Google "Father of Slain SEAL in Benghazi Demands Answers as Grisly Details Emerge.")

Notice that the soldier said "the Spectre," not "a Spectre."

Combine this with the fact that Tyrone Woods was painting a target with a ground laser designator, and the logical conclusion is that an AC-130 Spectre gunship was on scene but was denied permission to fire.

Spectres are part of Special Operations Command. No SOCOM commander would order a gunship to not engage the enemy when American forces are under attack.  Special operators would rather shoot themselves than do that. The order had to come from Panetta at the behest of the president.

An even worse scenario: The men at the CIA annex were promised a Spectre by SOCOM but it either never took off or was ordered back.  Again, such orders would come only from Panetta or Obama.

There's the possibility that Woods was painting the target for an armed Predator drone, but that still doesn't answer why the Spectre--which was at the very least promised--didn't show up, and it still means that the aerial platform did not fire.

Go to YouTube and search "show force gilligans island Mosul Iraq dec 04". That's a perfect depiction of how it's done. The ground laser designator is only turned on when the aerial platform is overhead, ready to fire. Notice how first one team lasers the target and then turns off the laser when the helicopter fires.  Then another team in a different position turns on a second laser until another helicopter opens fire, and then the second team turns off the laser.

No doubt both teams immediately changed positions after they used their lasers.  They're aware of enemy countermeasures.

So, Tyrone Woods was promised a Spectre that either didn't show up or appeared and was then ordered to not fire.  A second possibility is that when the Spectre didn't arrive, Woods was told that an armed Predator or Reaper already on scene would use a Hellfire missile.  It didn't fire, either.

The way the targeting works, the person on the ground coordinates with the crew of the aerial platform. They're in radio contact because the weapons system and the designator must be "synched," meaning the aerial platform must lock in on the target.  Lasers have a lot problems.  They can bounce off the target; they can be scattered; they can paint friendly forces.  Remember that there were Libyan militia in the firefight.

The ground laser designator determines the range to the target and fixes the location.  It can provide GPS coordinates for precision munitions. The person using the ground laser designator asks the air crew if they see the target, and they confirm.  In AC-130s, the pilots use night-vision goggles, and the ship is equipped with a laser spot tracker. The laser spot tracker can lock in on the target, but the pilots also look for the laser beam using their night-vision goggles. Only then is the target engaged.

Two more considerations: The pulse repetition frequency code of the laser target designator and the laser-guided weapons (the Hellfire missile on a Predator, for example) must be compatible, and the ground laser designators run on batteries. For the first consideration, Woods would've had to talk to any Predator or Reaper operator to make sure his designator was compatible with the missiles. For the second consideration, he wouldn't have turned on his ground laser designator and used up his battery power unless an air strike was imminent.

Prior to Tyrone Woods painting a target, you can see that he had to have been in contact with someone for quite a long time in order to work out all the technical aspects of an air strike.  Panetta and Obama would've been listening to all that.

Some people say that Woods may have been marking the target for a future air strike, maybe even one he knew would be carried out after his death.  That doesn't make sense because it was a mortar team.  They would've picked up their weapons and taken off long before a faraway aircraft showed up hours later.  He would only have been painting the target if he thought an air strike was imminent.

Finally, on the Lars Larson radio show, Charles Woods--Tyrone's father--said that he was told by the military at that there was a "C-something or other... that could've come above that and completely carpeted the area and prevented it from happening."

http://tinyurl.com/8vb3pqd

He makes the statement at 13:18.  He's clearly describing an AC-130, and Lars Larson does say "130" softly.

It seems clear that Woods synched up with an aerial platform, thinking an air strike was about to be carried out, and then someone ordered the aerial platform to not engage.  This order came only after Woods painted the target.  Whoever gave the order waited until Woods had exposed his position, and then he--Panetta and/or Obama--told the pilot of the aerial platform to not fire.

The crime here is much worse than not sending help.  Whoever told the aerial platform to not fire knew that Woods would soon be killed.  Whoever gave the order would have heard the conversation between Woods and the pilot of the aerial platform, so the order giver must have heard Woods shouting on the radio, "Why aren't you firing? Fire! What are you waiting for? Hurry!"

And then Woods was killed because the attackers used their cell phones or night-vision goggles to pinpoint Woods' position, and they dropped a mortar on him.

We're witnessing history here.  We've never had a more criminal, treasonous, loathsome administration.

Article 2 Section 1 Paragraph 4 of the Constitution: "The Congress may determine the Time of choosing the Electors, and the Day on which they give their Votes; which day shall be the same throughout the United States."

This empowered Congress to pass a law setting Election Day as the first Tuesday in November during a federal election year, which they did in 1845. And since that time Election Day has been on the first Tuesday in November every year for federal elections, come rain, sleet, or snow.

The Key to this whole situation, is the War Powers Act.

As these were Civilians under fire, and not military, ONLY the President could give the order, under his auspices as Commander in Chief, to Fire on, or send troops into, what is a Soverign UN Member State.... one we are NOT at War with.

It was NOT US Territory (the annex and CIA safe house are not really part of the embassy), or the US Military under attack (they were EX SEALs... ie not active duty).... so the normal Self Defense for the Military orders and rules would not apply....

The ONLY one who could order help, was the President... and he did not... he didn't order people NOT to help, but without his POSITIVE assertion as Commander in Chief, the Militarys hands were legaly tied.

Obama was too busy playing politics, to save these brave Mens lives... and THAT is, IMO, treasonous.

Obama is more Pontius Pilate in this morality play.... where instead of activly saving them.... he washed his hands....

It doesn't sound like a joke to me, and I'm sorry if my post made it sound as if I do.  I wasn't trying to be offensive.  I just don't think it's productive to get into a thing about "my tragic storms are worse than your tragic storms."  I've been in hurricanes on Long Island, I've been in tornadoes here in the Midwest, I've been thru the big 1989 earthquake in San Francisco.  There's no upside.  My apologies if I seemed callous.

174 >>JackStraw, we in flyover country care, we really do. However, this year hundreds of thousands of farmers lost EVERYTHING in a drought that affected MILLIONS of people. The media didn't care because 1) farmers and 2) it hurt the "everything's fantastic under the SCOAMF" meme. Yet every time the center of the universe NYC gets hit by a storm, the drive-by media works themselves into a frenzy. It's important, yes, but not more important than any other disaster that affects any other part of the country. Since when isn't this covered everywhere? Do you think we don't have television on the east coast? We hear about the plight of small family farmers every god damn day. Books get written about. What do you know about how the government has destroyed the commercial fishing industry in this country? Does that get covered where you live? Seriously, not everyone who lives on the east coast is your enemy and it gets tiring to hear that only people in the middle of the country matter.

Seriously, not every damned thing that happens in NYC is even remotely important to most of us in the Midwest. Yes, we give a damn when people are in harms way. Yes, we care a lot when there is something we can do to help. That's what we do. But how many times a day do you hear anything substantive about the Midwest, outside of political polling? NYC might have a lot of people, but most of them are there by choice. If they choose to stay and get hurt, so be it. I'm sorry they might lose everything, but that happens in a flood plain. That's why the government offers flood insurance. Please don't ask me to come up with more give-a-damn just because more people want to live in the Big Apple. I'm too busy giving a damn about the farmers who are destitute around these parts through no fault of their own and who now need me to stock the food pantry shelves because nobody from NYC is doing it for us. My apologies for the rant, but damn, man, back the hell off.

Hate is the opposite side of the same coin as love.

It's why lovers rejected turn suicidal or homicidal.

It's not what they did, it's the BETRAYAL.

You hold out your heart (figuratively) to someone or to a celebrity and they proceed to take it, throw it on the ground, spit on it, stomp on it and then walk away laughing.

People have died because they underestimated the degree of someone else's passion.

It's why I've given up on all entertainment except for online. Too heart wrenching to see performers that I adored and was awed by their abilities showing me their true selves; small minded, petty and petulant. With an added bonus of taking my money and using it against me and my country.

A good hate can keep you warm but watch out for being burned out to a hollow shell.

264 @240, the four (!) large earthquakes that struck between December 1811 and February 2012 were all estimated at higher than 7 on the Richter scale--only reason the devastation wasn't worse is because of how sparse the population was. Mississippi appeared to flow backwards, and susbsidence created a lake (Reelfoot Lake) that is still in existence. Theory is that earthquakes of that size on this alluvial soil now would cause both St. Louis and Memphis to be effectively destroyed because of unreinforced brick construction, the composition of the soil, and likely rupturing of gas lines. When it happens it'll be sudden and catastrophic, but no point in letting it get to you...

I don't remember offhand, but I went to school in STL so I heard about it a great deal. As I recall, there was a lot of extra design that went into the Arch because of the possibility of it happening again soon.

I remember the Good Friday earthquake in Anchorage, which I think is now listed at 9.2, and damn if I didn't think that was the end of the world. It wasn't just the jolts, but that it kept shaking for about 5 minutes. Thought maybe it wasn't ever going to stop, watching the trees flop over and touch the ground on either side again and again, and hearing every glass bottle in the pantry smash into the floor. Every waterline broke, and the power was out for a week. We boiled snow to drink for two weeks, on a Coleman stove. There is a great deal to be said for self-sufficiency, even in the city.

My dad is a civil engineer so we got to see photos of places most folks didn't get to see, like the railroad south to Seward where parts of it had sunk into the ocean and the rails were twisted beyond belief. He also did a fair amount of work in downtown Anchorage where the bluff turned to snot and slid into the ocean. Lots to stabilize. If you stand at one end of L street and look toward the park strip, you can still see the kink it makes right where the hospital was, where all of the underground utilities sheared clean off. Luckily, we had the military hospitals which were fine.

Mostly I remember the smell. Ammonia mixed with whiskey mixed with who-knows-what in the pantry. Everything was in glass bottles back then. What a mess.

317

When I read about this yesterday, I was immediately suspicious. I can believe a story about a hateful gay lib harassing a gay conservative. But I've read about a lot of fake hate crimes and this story sounded similar. The nefariousness of the supposed villain and the innocence of the supposed victim were too perfect and cut-and-dry. I wish I had made a fuss and commented on the earlier post, but the fact that savvy conservatives like Ace and Iowahawk bought into this story surprised me. It's hard to call "B.S.!" when someone appears to have been hurt, especially when that person is an ideological ally and the bad-guy is an ideological foe.

More often than not, these incidents happen on college campuses, where the victimization fetish epidemic is most virulent. But I remember stories from political campaigns as well. I recall a story about a mentally ill McCain volunteer in 2008 faking an assault by black Obama supporters - can't remember where.

And I read an article recently about fake hate crimes in academia - suprisingly (or maybe not) the hoaxers end up being faculty in many cases, not just students. I remember the story featured a lesbian student at some school in Connecticut who faked a series of threats and hate mail and consequently became a campus hero as they held vigils and rallies on her behalf and protests against homophobia....until the police caught her on video planting the letters herself. And there was a black professor at Columbia who faked racial harrassment. She didn't assault herself but I think she vandalized her own car and office.

Someone above mentioned Tawana Brawley.

Also, there was the old 80's TV guy, Morton Downey Jr., who faked an assault by neo natseys in an airport bathroom and drew a swazticker on his face in the mirror (so it came out backwards - hahaha).

It also brings to mind the faked war casualty footage from the Middle East  and fake rape accusations, which are different but related phenomena.

It's a bizarre behavioral tendency and I think we will see more of these stories in the future. As our society gets better about treating people, we ironically grow more obsessed with racism, misogyny, homophobia, etc. Now it's all about bullying.

What drives a person to commit such a ruse? Desire for attention, for sure. We all wish to punish a hated adversary (real and imagined) and a long for some form of vindication against them, where the world recognizes the justness of their plight and the wickedness of those opposed. There is also a weird human tendency to fantasize about overcoming adversity and hardship and injustice. Like Monty Python's sketch about the Four Yorkshiremen, we want to exaggerate and boast about the suffering we have endured. For an emotionally or mentally unstable individual, these desires must be too much. And the rest of us are not nearly as skeptical and stoic as we should be.
