She's wealthy, you know. And weird.

She owns "extraordinarily expensive" horses and does a weird thing called "dressage," also called (they claim this) "horse ballet."

It was a rare moment of pique for Ann Romney, not meant for public consumption, and one that opened a window onto the private world of the would-be first lady. Â…

I actually know someone who was trainging for the Olympics in dressage before she ran out of money.  Yes, it is called horse ballet and it's really really really difficult.  

 

Also, iirc, you know who else has a daughter who does this?  Springsteen.  In fact, I do believe there was a whole bunch of shit down in Florida when they bought the estate next to theirs so that there would be more room for the horses.  Yup, that hero of the downtrodden Springsteen.

Screaming kid update - boss came in just as the kid let our a particularly loud shriek and he just stared at me.  I smiled sweetly and said "that would be your 1:30".  Swear by the insanity of cthulhu he looked like he was contemplating fleeing. 

 

Yet moar work bitching - due to the burgeoning Obama economy, we had to let our receptionist go several months ago.  The layout is such that none of us can see the front door directly.  We put out a bell and a "please ring bell" sign.  Yeah. Apparently that means "hey just walk straight back into the office, it's fine!"

its good for Neurological and musculoskeletal conditions. and they try to get you into competition as soon as possible to give you a reason to push thru the pain and difficulty of mastering the skills and getting to the point the therapy give you the most benefit. Thats why she does this. Its the carrot, to get you past the stick of the pain and your illness. (as you might guess This is my story too, so i am Horrendously offended, as are most other people who do horse rehab for various issues, or have kids who do, or who voulinteer huge sums of cash and time and trouble to run handicapped riding stables (which never ever make much but cost PLENTY)



And no, 100K isnt too much for a show horse or a breeding stallion. Totillas a stallion who does the same thing Annes horse does, went for a cool mil. Didnt see any articles about what terrible people his new owners are!

And the reason that Ann Romney got involved in Dressage was through Hippotherapy for her MS.  Working with horses has a strong track record for patients with a wide variety of neurological and muscular issues including improved balance, gait and muscle tone.  There is also a significant improvement in mental acuity, sense of well being and positive attitude. 

In short - the outside of a horse is good for the inside of a man.

211 The article is nonsense.  Dressage is not just for the rich unless one is talking about Olympic class horses.   All riders can benefit from dressage lessons.  That includes western style riders.  Dressage is about enhancing a rider's control through exercises that increase the suppleness and collection of the horse's movements.  These same exercises teach the rider control to the point where the commands to the horse via the reins, leg pressure and shifting weight  are almost imperceptible to those watching. It's the ultimate in horsemanship. 

A far from rich friend teaches dressage. She also buys promising yearlings or thoroughbreds who weren't fast enough to win on the track and work with them until they can be resold as dressage prospects. It's the finished horses ready for top level competition that cost six figures,  mostly because of the investment in years of training.  Most races horses are retired to stud at age three or four.  Many other show horses are retired by age ten. Top dressage horses often reach their peak performance when in their teens.

227 Gushka I totally get it. I looked into it for one of my kids (adopted) that has had some severe behavioral/psychological issues. In some cases insurance does cover. The idea is that the kid builds a relationship with the animal using mutual trust and respect which is what my child needed ( still working on it) to learn to function in family situations. But its killing us regular folks who service the horse industry, making very little or just barely breaking even. If Grim and my parents didnt help support me (enlisted guys make bupkis) after my divorce I would have lost my farm. As the price of gas goes up so does the price of feed and as the price of feed goes up my whole deal becomes less and less viable.


That goes for all those handicapped riding programs too. They are going to eliminate all deductions for horse business no matter how legit come next year. You will then understand why they made horse slaughter legal again. They are gonna die like nobody imagined after that. People out there will have no reason to feed the damn hayburners. When it was 8 bucks a bale of hay-- sure. But now its up to 30. Because its cheaper to barge the hay to China for top dollar than to truck it down here.

253 gushka, I hear you...I was raised in Kentucky horse country...if it weren't for the Arab sheiks and Polish billionaires moving in there and buying up a lot of the farms, and truckloads of illegal Mexicans showing up to do the work for peanuts, there wouldn't be a Thoroughbred racing industry left in Kentucky either. We have lots of small family-owned farms around where I live now in suburban Philly, and many of them are for sale. Those owners I know are barely surviving - not because of the economy but because of skyrocketing costs for feed and transportation, as you say. 254 Dressage is the formalization of cavalry maneuvers used by the ancient Greeks.  The manual written by Xenophon is still used as a basis for training.  If you're interested in seeing how a horse would use these moves in real life, go to Youtube and search for "Merlin" and "horse".  The Lusitano (descendant of the Spanish horses that gave the Romans fits) is trained in the sport of bullfighting from horseback.  Watch the moves and ask yourself how you'd like to be the infantry facing that in battle.  Look for "Airs above the Ground" and ask yourself how many times you'd be able to dodge the hooves of a horse trained to kill you when it leaps into the air and lashes out with its back hooves.   Dressage may be considered 'horse ballet' today, but that's not where it started.

Sadly, trained pikemen can gut a horse and spit his rider in short order. Very hard to get even the best trained horse to behave when his ass is feathered with arrows. This is how the French lost Agincourt and died face down in the mud. Archers, and pikemen. The horses were gutted or driven mad, and rendered uncontrollable.

Bad news for the LA Times (Obama Public Relations Department)

 

$100,000.00 for a trained thorbread horse in not expensive.  Look at the Kentucky breeders sales someday, it happens in the Spring, that is a below average price for that type of animal.  Care and feeding depending on the farm that it is kept at can be reasonable.

Fair warning, I am not rich and have had my own horses (Morgan mixed, not even close to the kind of horse your article is about) for most of my life many people of fairly limited means enjoy riding.  Horses are not really all that different from many large breeds of dogs as far as feeding and other than the vet visits and bill most of the care can be done by anyone.

 

It would be nice if the writer of the story had some idea what he was writing about or had the common sense to research the subject but it is the LA Times low expectations should always be expected.

I have an event horse that does traing lvl dressage and a 3rd lvl dressage horse, I have never heard anyone in the business refer to dressage as ballet. It is a rigorous discipline that was used to train military cavalries in Europe. Much of the training has been tweaked for western riders, especially reigning because of the level of cooperation that developers between the horse and rider. Good horses that get riders into the upper levels of any discipline cost money, but since the prize money in the jumpers is higher, they are almost as expensive as a top racing thoroughbred.

Just like any other sport, there are levels of competition. Almost anybody can compete at the lower /beginner levels if they will practice and work hard. I have pony club kids in my neighborhood riding giveaway horses off the race track (lots horses that retire off the track or just don't cut it as race horses end up as hunters, jumpers, trail horses, dressage horses, etc).

 

Is the giveaway horse going to make it to the Olympics?  Maybe yes, maybe no.  Most likely no.  The Olympic caliber horses are bred for the sport and are trained by professionals for years.  People like Springsteen go buy a "finished" horse for their kids.  BTW Bloomberg's daughter rides show jumpers, not dressage horses.  At least get the damn sport correct, LAT!!

 

At the end of the day, a horse (like a house:  see Oprah Winfrey) is worth what someone will pay for it.  I have a horse in my barn right now that the gullible owners paid $25,000 for. He's worth about $5000.  I traded a nutty four year old filly that flunked out of cutting horse school for a safe pony for my kid and thought I came way out ahead. That horse is now running at the top of the 2D times on the barrel racing circuit and may make a WPRA horse in a few years. She's probably worth quite a bit of money now, but at the time I made the trade, I would have paid someone to take her off my hands.

 

I'm also curious how the LAT knows what Ann spent on the horse. Private sale figures are closely guarded secrets; when numbers are bandied about by industry gossips, they are usually ridiculously inflated.

 

The fact that Ann Romney has a heart and gives a crap about somebody/thing besides herself makes me like her more.

272 Eglin AFB has a stable for service people, their dependents and civil servants to keep their horses.  Dressage is THE thing down here - even more so than western trail riding.  Dressage isn't, at this level, any more expensive than any other type of horsey activity.

273 What to do? What to do?!? NBC is Obama's campaign central on TV. NBC has the summer Olympic games in a few months. NBC will take the next couple weeks to run with this Ann Romney horror-of-all-horrors story. So, how will NBC bad mouth Ann for her hobby-horse "fussy Olympic sport", and then segue into covering it during the Olympics (and you know they will during the daytime hours in an attempt NOT to cover more interesting Olympic events so as to tape delay them for primetime, even though via the internet the results will already have been known by anybody who gives a shit)?? One last question. How many Kennedy's and/or Heinze-Kerry democrat types do you think dabble in the "fussy Olympic sport" of high-priced horse dressage? Obama major supporter Bruce Springsteen's daughter competes in such horse events, and even travels to such places as Great Britain to do so. So, what is the point of riding Ann Romney's ass for her self-financed hobby? As with Palin, these people got nothing. Hopefully the voters won't be stupidly buying it this time, again.

277 Every little kid in Pony Club, and many in 4-H, across the country participate in dressage as part of their competitions.  They do it with their old horses, with their little ponies, with their donated horses someone is letting them use.  It is extremely difficult.  You have to have amazing control over the animal, follow a complicated memorized pattern, and look great while performing.  Anyone who refers to this sport as fussy, is either uninformed or an idiot.  Or both.  It is like ballet, but to refer to it as fussy, is like telling a ballet dancer, who has just performed, that all they have done is a silly little dance which took no effort or planning.  If you want to see something amazing google an Olympic rider doing dressage.

Next week the LATimes plans on attacking a blind republicans for their use of expensive guide dogs.  Gone are the days when  attacking someone for therapy for a life-threatening illness would be considered the height of politically, socially, and morally incorrectness. The person who wrote this should be a pariah.

I agree with all the horse owners on this thread. The horse industry is broad-based and democratically available to almost all social strata and incomes. The disciplines are as varied as the folks who do them, dressage being perhaps the most respected, with movements that are practiced to some degree by most horsemen whether it's called "dressage" or not. The author of this piece outed herself for an ignoramus who to top it off is morally reprehensible for attacking a sick woman seeking therapy.

Oh - and my horses aren't aristocrats, but they've got better papers than the doofus in the White House.
