Late Morning Open Thread: Government Troll Edition [Y-not]
— Open Blogger

I don't recall seeing this hit AoSHQ this week.

From TechDirt:

A few weeks ago, Glenn Greenwald, while working with NBC News, revealed some details of a GCHQ presentation concerning how the surveillance organization had a "dirty tricks" group known as JTRIG -- the Joint Threat Research Intelligence Group. Now, over at The Intercept, he's revealed the entire presentation and highlighted more details about how JTRIG would seek to infiltrate different groups online and destroy people's reputations -- going way, way, way beyond just targeting terrorist groups and threats to national security.

Read the rest here.

We're in the very best of hands.

Open thread.

12 on link; Among the core self-identified purposes of JTRIG are two tactics: (1) to inject all sorts of false material onto the internet in order to destroy the reputation of its targets; and (2) to use social sciences and other techniques to manipulate online discourse and activism to generate outcomes it considers desirable

19 Planting evidence is as old as law enforcement.

That's why we had a 4th Amendment.

And that's why the Supreme Court dismantled it--being unable to convict innocent people is a hindrance to ruling over them.

That is what the NSA is and was up to--they have no need to gather information and snoop on every American. They do, however, as they were told, need to have the means to implicate and incriminate every American.

Nothing short of a complete dismantling and firing of the NSA is appropriate here, with many of the top management incarcerated for 10+ years.

Further, every politician that was briefed on these activities and kept quiet should spend a mandatory 5 years in prison.

Either we are a free people--free in our persons, papers and effects--or we are subjects . . . .

The problem with that, Rosemarie, is that the Black Panthers were the ones who actually did the gruesome murdering. Now if COINTELPRO managed to have them gruesomely murder each other instead of innocent victims, then in retrospect, I'd consider that a success.

170 OT, but never forget. 72 years ago during the Battle of Sunda Strait (28 Feb-1 Mar 1942) the heavy cruiser USS Houston and the light cruiser HMAS Perth were sunk by the Japanese. Approx. 1750 men manned the two ships. About 700 survived the sinkings and became POWs. About 200 would die before the war ended. In addtion to the Houston and Perth being sunk on 1 March so was the USS Pope, Edsall, Pecos, HMS Exeter, Encounter, and HNMS Evertsen in the waters around Java. Before the end of the day the U.S. Asiatic Fleet/ABDA Float ceased to exist. The few surviving ships were ordered to Australia (USS Pillsbury, Asheville, HMAS Yarra, HMS Stronghold were sunk enroute) and would become part of the new US 7th Fleet (MacArthur's future navy). During the first 3 months of the war the men fought against overwhelming odds in old, undergunned, underarmoured ships without air cover. Many heroic actions, some known, most unknown were performed by those sailors. There's no flowers on a sailors grave No lilies on an ocean wave The only tribute is the seagulls sweep And the tear drop on a loved ones cheek Anonymous

180 I just finished going through the morning thread and all of Vic's links. I try to limit my political posts on Facebook to one a day and I try to keep my comments reasoned and good-humored, but today's post was a link to the WSJ article about the continued IRS targeting of conservative groups with the comment that the Obama admin has gone full-fascism. I know that will sound extreme to most FBers who read it, but that's the only way to describe what's happening, and it's so sad that so many people don't want to acknowledge that. I've always wondered what it was like living in an era preceding a great political upheaval. Couldn't the people see what was happening? Why didn't the try to stop it? Well, we're living it and we're trying to stop it, but there are so many more people who either don't care because they agree with the ideology, are looking for what they can get out of it, or are just too overwhelmed with daily life to take a stand. Sad days in America.

214 154. Posted by: Nevergiveup at March 01, 2014 11:12 AM (t3UFN) Happy Hour 2014! Putin's "favor" to crucial timing. March 4: US BALLOT Who bothers to vote compared to who bothers to see through propaganda into the realization of our cohesive constitutional agenda? What of the American backlash against the corrupt bipartisan establishment HERE AT HOME? How can a corrupt America provide any other nation incorruption via military and economic "intervention" aka utter destruction? Our own leaders refuse to follow their own injunctions and laws that they impose on the rest of us around the world. Clean our own home first. Everyone wants self determination. How can we give to another that which we ourselves lack? Even redistribution couldn't magically transfer what isn't there. No matter how firm economic politicians are in their faith in Keynesian "Debt is Gold." That alchemy malfunctions every time. So the Ukraine and Crimean populations think they want to go down with the EU ship because they'll fair better without any fuel than they could possibly cultivate and develop economically with their given circumstance shared relations with Russia. And we as Americans are supposed to "fix" their problems since we can't fix our own. Great. Our "exceptionalism" is no longer based upon Liberty, Justice and the Supreme Law of the Constitutional Republic. Rather, upon corrupt follies. All Is Vanity: In Vanity We Trust. Self determination. No one "gives" it to you. There's nothing "free" about liberty; just a lot of self control and dedicated responsibilities. The onus is on the individual. You ask for a government to "save" you and all you're asking is to be another government's slave/bitch. Realize that "fixers" are not even as smart as the people who recognize that a problem exists. What empowers the usurpers? The lack of self respect in Americans to retain Individualism above all, that being the mark of Liberty. Trusting government is to trust in tyranny. (paraphrasing Grover Cleveland)

215 Ex-Snipe @ 170-
There was a Gunny Sgt. (yeah, sea-going jarheads onbd  Navy cruisers back then) firing a .50 cal from one of the masts. The survivors said that gun kept firing until it went under. The story is that the Gunny could not swim. He told his a-gunner 'Don't worry about me. I'll be fine.' We produced men like that in droves back then. The citizens of Houston did a money drive to replace that vessel, and came up with enough to build a freaking carrier. We had citizens like that in droves back then, too.

216 Too bad we didn't have the atomic bomb at the beginning of the war. We could have nipped that baby in the bud. Then again, the commies would have gotten it sooner than they did and not have suffered from WW2 which would have made an extremely dangerous situation.

217 Posted by: Erowmero at March 01, 2014 11:39 AM (OONaw) Yep, Seagoing Marines or IIRC Mardets were on Navy ships a long time. The sailors hated them and they hated the sailors. But when the lead started to fly there was no difference. I think the Navy and Marines ended the Seagoing Marines in the late 90s.

219 189. Posted by: Nevergiveup at March 01, 2014 11:25 AM (t3UFN) No joke. Like taking candy away from the obese American baby. The easiest way in a democracy to become authoritarian is through a population that demands Socialism as if to implement justice via injustice, equality via inequality, etc. The hungry and beleaguered Oliver Twist to Tyranny: "Please sir, may I have more?" I wrote of Americans' individual war effort contributions in Spain's Civil War 1930s. Remember that Mexico was the ONLY nation that permitted Communist Spaniards to emigrate. France had left all the refugees from Spain to survive out in the elements on the beach, literally, fenced homeless, on the water's edge, no tents, no food, no humanitarian donations (THAT while forcing starving Germans to pay war reparations; simultaneously French dividing their own politics between communist and fascist elements, eventually siding with NAZI through the dumbest EVER defense against German invasion: OPEN BORDER through 'common ground' Belgium.). Anyway, the socialist oligarchs in Mexico are having their heyday at the Middle Class expense, and with our "shared bipartisan value" politicians and bureaucrats, laughing all the way to the Central Banks. To them, there's never "enough" so long as any Individual still retains dignity. Today's hue and cry berates the Constitutional Republic and targets all Gringo bitter clingers as enemies of the revisionist US Socialist Democratic Republic. Ego Obesity is morbid.

HMNS Banckert was damaged on Feb 4, 1942.  Attempts were made to repair the ship but the Japanese were approaching.  Attempt to scuttle ship failed.  Japanese refloated warship but never finished repairs.  Was used as a target ship in 1949 and sunk.

222 and not have suffered from WW2 which would have made an extremely dangerous situation. Posted by: Judge Pug at March 01, 2014 11:44 AM (6Nj7A) wtf?! where to begin... as if Russians (et al.) by suffering the NAZI atrocities made a safer situation? As if WW2 Nazi aggression made the world a safer place. Kyrie eleison Reconsider the outcome of the Western Alliance ganging up against CENTRAL European development as equals in world politics. From WWI and Versailles came WWII which actually unified all Russians in defense of their Motherland. Had WWII not occurred, imagine how divided the many factions of Russians were and how their nation's course would have been different. Had Russia not been attacked by Germany, in a parallel universe I could imagine the Russians organizing to oust Stalin from power. But that's neither here nor there. After all was said and done, it was the Russians (like the Ottoman Empire's final gesture to all its citizens regardless of ethnicity, religion, economic status) who determined to allow a degree of self determination within the USSR. Of course, economics determined the timing, and even the outcome. So there it is. Communism isn't going away from overpopulated massive regions like Russia, China, and given open borders with NAFTA, the American Continent, USA in tow. US Military has been revised, having emerged from the "Continental Army" to have become the Global Army. And the Joint Chiefs are NOT protecting the US Constitution, but are joined at Obama's hip. After all, their careers are at stake! Damn the Constitution and all those who take seriously their oath to support and defend it. So say our bipartisan shared values national (and state, and local) political leadership. And the voters? Given propaganda to illicit habitual response, fail to evict corruption from office. Re-elect the old. Or Not. Wilson was wrong about everything, despite how well his elitist contingencies have grossly profited at the Middle Class and Liberty's massive expense. Wilson's military interventionism soured US/Russian relations that had previously not experience rancor. Even had Wilson's military exploits succeeded, the rancor would have been all the worse for wear through the 20th century. The moral of the story remains as our Founders set as axiom for our country. Even Jesus didn't coerce people to love, or to follow his own example, or to accept his teachings. Free Will being fruit of the Tree from which history grows and falls, we are where we are.

223 I believe the FBI? did the same thing during the 60-70s anti-war movement, what's changed is that we have become the "communists" or red threat to certain government groups. They regard socons and libertarians as subversives because we are underming their goals, as communists once worked against the former poltical culture back in the 50s-60s. People tend to keep their profile down in a similar fashion because of the similar troubles such as career blowback And the ability to spy on private discussions is far greater. I recently said to heck with it, and made most my page public. They are going to read it anyway, I might as well share my likes and opinions with the world. But there has been an unpleasant response. I'd take a close look at our opponents strategies during their under the microscope days and find out what worked.
