Laughing At The Issues
— andy

If Biden was trying to lock up the hyena vote, he succeeded wildly.

But other than that, WTF was he trying to do here?

GOP web ad below the fold.

Joe Biden, condescending scrunt of the first order.

4 He was trying to come across as, "I'm the experienced politician. You, Ryan are the newcomer. It's laughable that you think you;re up to this job." I think he was coached to do that in the hope that Ryan would lose his cool and the Dems would win a point that way.

Posted by: FenelonSpoke at October 12, 2012 03:45 AM (0nogT)

5 What strikes me as funny about this is that democrats for years have decried the talking head style of CAble news debate formats where the heads scream and interupt each other. John the socialist Lebowitz does all the time. But yet that is exactly what they are cheering their VP candidate for turning a debate into.

after a good night's sleep i can say Ryan CLEARLY comes out ahead.

joe made liberal dems happy -- dems that were going to vote for O anyway

ryan won some independents in the middle -- independents that might vote either way

AP had it 51-43 ryan

CNN had it 48-44 ryan

on cnn i think, ryan won on 'presidential', 'likeability', 'cares about people like you' but 10 full points

I am flummoxed as to what Joe was doing.... O's problem isn't democrat enthusiasm for white hipsters, it's enthusiasm for latinos & blacks, and poor showing with indpendents

how did last night raise the standing of obama in the eyes of latinos, blacks, or independents?

DISASTER for the dems.

42 @35

i have been saying that ryan won the debate by keeping cool and looking as though he was actually serious about the discussion rather than intent on heckling the opponent, but despite ryan's win joe looked like he knew what he was talking about if only because he's been around for so long.  all that's at the margins, but what is most striking now is that mitt romney, joe biden, and paul ryan all seem to know quite a bit more about stuff than the president himself, which draws an even more striking contract between the r^2 ticket and obama and slow joe.

also, i thought the only really good lines in the debate were delivered by ryan.

Comparing Joe to Dick Cheney and Joe Lieberman.

In the 2000 election cycle, there was the same format with the VP candidates.

Joe Lieberman and Dick Cheney behaved like civilized adults.  There was give and take, back and forth, and both men came across as reasonable and thoughtful.  I even remember comments after the debate that people wished more politicians behaved like this, because it seemed to the audience that the two men were actually thinking and considering what each other said.

Biden was performing last night, and frankly it was unwatchable to me and I turned it off. I couldn't take much of the lying, braying jackass for more than about 10 minutes.

He is, after all, the man that Barack Obama chose to be his running mate, isn't he?

Gutsy call.

50 All Biden did last night was cement his reputation as one of the most idiotic, buffoonish pieces of shit that's ever been elevated to a position of power in this country. I can't believe a grown man would not only think that behaving like a horse's ass in front of the world would be appropriate but also wouldn't feel stupid acting that way. I genuinely question whether the guy is suffering early stages of dementia. He's just a stupid old man. He's also a terrible person. After all, I often have more money in my pocket than he and his wife have often given to charity in entire calendar years.

51 Biden is a glib jackass with the scruples of a rat. I have been talking about reports of his likely brain damage since 2008. Last night he took what would have been a good plan and by cranking it up to 11+ he wound up looking like a demented old clown. He made his knee jerk base happy. Everyone else either was offended or felt their skin crawl at his rabid hyena act.

"But other than that, WTF was he trying to do here?"

I was just hearing Huckabee talk, and I think he touched on the answer to this.  Basically, he believes that Biden's strategy was to attempt to make Ryan look like he "wasn't ready for Prime Time" - that he was something of an upstart.  The way he did that was to be dismissive and disrespectful.

It didn't work.  Even people who say "Biden won" thought he was just being a jerk.  Seriously, it tarnishes the office of the VP to have its occupant behave so badly.

Posted by: Optimizer at October 12, 2012 05:24 AM (As94z)

54 I prayed for both debates that the character of the candidates be revealed to the American people. I think in both debates, they have. Obama is a detached, disinterested academic, and Romney is a skilled executive with enormous leadership skills. Biden is a rude, pandering, old school political hack and Ryan is a serious young man with real ideas.

60 Because Obama sneered, smiled slyly, hung his head and couldn't give a straight answer to anything they had to change their strategy. Biden would laugh, stare, guffaw and ridicule to show they weren't as dumb as they seemed. Big Bird loved it.

61 Ace talked about Chris Matthews thinking "blue collar" means talking like a punk on a barstool (having never actually talked like that in real life and been knocked off said stool).  Was the Biden performance any different?  Do you think it appealed to anyone not already wedded to voting for Obama?  I imagine it appealed to women in the same way that listening to Debbie Wasserman Schultz appeals to me when she speaks and makes me want to marry her.

Obama is a detached, disinterested academic

For the umpteenth time, Obama is not a goddamned academic!

He never published anything, he never was a professor, he never had tenure, he never had a tenure track position.

He was just a Communist agitator asshole from the neighborhood who was brought in as a political favor to give some lectures on gaming the Constitution to gain racial preferences (and, in the process, to buff up his shitty resume).

He was no more an academic for giving a few lectures than he was an MLB pitcher for throwing out a ball (I'm being charitable here) for the All-Star game.

Back on topic, I think Biden's strategy was indeed to get Ryan to jump into the pig sty and wrestle with him. They'd both end up muddy, but that would redound to Biden's advantage, since he has the age to pat Ryan on the head and patronize him ("I knew John Kennedy ... and you're no John Kennedy," that sort of thing).

Ryan did a good job of keeping his cool. Raddatz as referee got in some rabbit punches (to switch metaphors) when Biden went into a clinch with Ryan, but she wasn't as bad as I'd thought she 'd be.
