It was never supposed to mean anything legally but desperate liberals will latch on to anything to justify a rubber constitution.

9 Last year, I watched Star Trek the Original Series all over again and was delightfully reminded how many episodes made conservative points.  Even the one that pointedly mentions "the Son" (Jesus).

26 From the live blog:

To answer a question about who might be retiring soon, I think that may well depend on who wins the election. If the President is re-elected, there may be a lot of pressure on Justice Ginsburg to retire to ensure that he can appoint her successor. She has said that she wants to serve as long as Justice Brandeis, which I think would put her in 2014.

But only she can make the call. Justices Scalia and Kennedy are the next oldest Justices, and there might be similar pressure on them if Romney were to win instead. But they too are going to be fairly impervious to pressure. They all really enjoy their jobs.

If she retired right now I would hope that the Republicans would stall it until after the election.

Posted by: alexthechick - SMOD 2012 at June 28, 2012 05:23 AM (VtjlW)

34 Yeah, maybe not the worst non-Season Three ep of "Star Trek," but close.  Odd thing is that it was written, or at least the story was concocted, by Gene Roddenberry, the Great Bird of the Galaxy himself.

And before anybody springs in with "Gawd Shatner is a lousy actor":  Remember that acting styles have changed in forty-something years.

I recall something I read once about James Cagney, "The key to acting is TRUTH.  That's not the same as being realistic.  There isn't a human ever who behaved like Cagney does on film, but you cannot find a single frame of his performances that isn't TRUE."  And that, I think, applies equally to Mr. Shatner..

39 EC, Kirk beat Clinton to the line, "Because I Could!"

Kirk = teh fuckin boss!

I also want to talk about my incredible displeasure with the re-boot/prequel of the Star Trek franchise by the Lost writer assfucks.  They completely glossed over the Kobayashi Maru plot point like it was a fucking joke.  That's supposed to have been Kirk's defining moments where he learns to assess the situation, take stock of his options, and then go on to make his own.  Fucking Chris Pine walks in, eating an apple, and the whole thing is made up to look like a prank.

That's not how I wanted it to be shown!

80 AllenG no I am not.  I watched the reboot in the theatre and about gagged.  They had characters saying the 'phrases' but savaging everything.

Sulu knows about swordsmanship and pulls out a foldable ninja sword.

Chekov plays Tetris as Spock abandons logic and his sense of duty to save his mother during Red Alert.

Spock Prime uses a shuttle powered transporter to beam Kirk and Scotty aboard Enterprise.  Said ship is traveling at Warp Speed at a speed and direction Spock Prime does not know.

And worse of all as Wolfus says they just give to the bratty Kirk, who has not even graduated from Starfleet Academy, command of a starship.

The writing in this movie makes Spock's Brain seem a candidate for the Nobel in Literature.

Posted by: Anna Puma at June 28, 2012 05:34 AM (ZHrEM)

81 God, Allen you make me feel really really old. I was an original Trekkie. My sister dragged me to first Star Trek convention held in Dallas, back in early 70s, maybe late sixties. Man what a trip to think about. Come to think about it I saw the original Star Wars (episode IV to you young'uns) the first week it was out. Maybe that's why I don't want Obamacare. I would be first in line for the death panel.

Posted by: San Antonio Rose at June 28, 2012 05:34 AM (noqys)

82 But I will agree that the casting was very good in the Abrams film.  Pine had the cockiness of a young Kirk (though making him out as the James Dean of the 23rd century was a big mistake); and Karl Urban was positively channeling DeForest Kelley as McCoy!

111 It is J.  J.  Abrams who decided to kill off Kirk's father, and then blow up Vulcan because he could, just like most odd numbered Trek films, not good ideas.

Posted by: archie goodwin at June 28, 2012 05:43 AM (XbAbB)

112 The new film was aimed utterly at twenty-somethings.  Apparently, as we see in one of Chekov's scenes, it's okay in the new Star Fleet to abandon your post if you have a reeely, reeely good reason.

Contrast that with the times in the original when McCoy, say, was the senior officer present on the bridge.  But they never had him take command, even though he outranked Sulu or whoever, because (as I understand things naval today) he was clearly a staff officer -- not command trained.  To have the ship's doctor conning the vessel would have been ridiculous.

I'd agree -- usually an engineering officer wouldn't take the bridge.  But Scott was an officer, a Lieutenant Commander, as Trek didn't deal with enlisted ranks at all.  And maybe somebody recalled that much later in TNG, when they devised the business with a special examination, not just a written test, an officer could take to qualify as a bridge officer.  We can suppose it existed in Kirk's time, and Scotty took that.

265 Other cases today: Don’t expect the justices to announce the health-care ruling as soon as they take the bench at 10 a.m. The court has three cases left to decide and it will very likely announce the other two decisions first. In one of those cases, the court will decide whether Congress violated the First Amendment when it made it a crime to lie about receiving a military medal. The other case involves title-insurance referrals and First American Financial Corp. The case has been pending for an unusually long time – the justices heard arguments last November. The issues are a bit technical, but the court’s ruling could have important implications for consumers’ access to the court system. h/t wsj

Well, she was sort of a headshrinker, a psychologist (unless she did have an M.D. like hawt Beverly).  But that was what I meant when I mentioned a bridge officer training and exam.  The script had her take command of the bridge when it was cut off from Picard and the other senior officers, and she shouldn't have, even though she was the ranking officer present.  So another script had her put in for that exam later on, after talking with Beverly, who'd done it and passed.

421 Justice Ginsburg makes clear that the vote is 5-4 on sustaining the mandate as a form of tax. Her opinion, for herself and Sotomayor, Breyer and Kagan, joins the key section of Roberts opinion on that point. Her opinion on Commerce does not control. gee, thanks Roberts - at least we got that - throw us a bone, why don't you?
