— Ace Back when I supported Tim Pawlenty -- do you remember him? -- I was trying to think of ways to generate some excitement for him.
I mentioned this to John Sexton (@verumserum, now at Breitbart), and he did this video, which we never finished. There was a lot of creative tension on the set.
Later we tried to get it all recut for Romney but there were technical snags.
Anyway. This video has now been sitting around for six months, unfinished. Might as well post it.
Here's a funny thing: John put in all the sex stuff. I thought it was too much.
Then, it grew on me.
One of our fights was about the lion. The lions humping was my idea. I wanted much more lions humping.
Oddly, he was plenty comfortable with the butts and the boobies, but then he balked on the lions.
Sometimes these collaborations just end in bitter fights.
Oh, this one was odd. I was talking up throwing in completely random stuff. John threw in something so random it blew my mind. Then it went on for like ten seconds, making me think he was mentally unwell.
You'll see what I mean.

All of which may be true, but it also suggests those of us who AREN'T exactly like that, and still supported the guy, don't exist.
Or to put it another way, Fox News is too much Sean Hannity, and not enough Greg Gutfeld. Everybody knows he have Clint Eastwood, but they don't know about Dennis Miller. The R party is Todd Akin, and not Allen West.
Somebody once said "image is everything." Ace, if this world knew you and this site existed, Mitt Romney would have gotten more votes. They don't, and that's not your fault, but until they do, we have a problem.

Really? Pawlenty? Ugh.
Face it, we had a sucky field this time. Not a one of our young stars got in the race. No one could have competed with the cult of personality around Obama. Certianly not a stiff moderate (Romney, Pawlenty) or an unelectable flamboyant loon (Gingrich, Bachmann). Add to that the months of unanswered "Kill Romney" ads over the summer in the swing states.
And yet Romney was on track to win this thing a week before the election. Then we know what happened. How frustrating. God has it in for us.

But seriously, OK. . .that one "might" have been a little over the top, but "unofficial" ads can still move the needle, particularly early in the race when the candidates are defining each other.

That list is very "rear view mirror" 2012, and doesn't even consider probable candidates (like Jindal) who decided to sit this one out. By 2015 it will probably look very different.
At least half the names on that list won't get past the "speculation" stage (eg Huckabee, Rice, Palin). I don't think Ryan is interested in running, frankly.
Unless he has massive redemption with conservatives over the next four years (which is improbable at best), Christie doesn't stand a prayer now. GOP = elephant = long memories.

Obama can still screw up foreign policy, and he can mess things up via executive order, but at least the latter is potentially reversible. House GOP majority does severely put a crimp in any new legislative shenanigans. Whatever Obama gets with tax rates over the next three months will ultimately be changed anyway, just as these things get tinkered with every few years anyway.
The fact that he just squeaked out a win with probably the most cynical and divisive campaign in modern memory is nice, but Obama has still used up most of his political capital, and he hasn't gained much, if any with this last campaign.
By 2016 (assuming he even lasts in office that long) Obama will have tarnished the Dem brand so much, he's going to come out of office making Bush 2008 look like a saint.

Word for word, from the ulsterman report. This is West's district and this is a significant Romney insider according to Ulsterman. Something is fucked up and fucked up in a big way.
To give you a taste of what IÂ’m doing now IÂ’ll share this with you. IÂ’m using a Florida outcome in a specific district to try and wrap my head around all of this. Three counties. Martin, St. Lucie, and Palm Beach. Martin is controlled by Republicans and the turnout #s match what all our national trending showed. Big enthusiasm for the Republican candidate. Republican vote dominated Martin County. St. Lucie and Palm Beach are the real tests and is where the #s really start to signal something is wrong. St. Lucie leans Democrat. Palm Beach is Dem dominated. St. Lucie showed marginally less votes for Democrats % wise. Republicans enjoyed some cross-over which is what all the national models were indicating. In Palm Beach County which is Dem. dominated, voter turnout was even more depressed than prior elections, especially for the Democrats. But the Democrats won the district. The Republicans lost. Basically, the Democrat-dominated counties seem to be where some very odd #s came back. And if this is the model they utilized last night, they had to have done it in multiple counties for every swing state. That kind of coordination would be huge. And it would need the help of operatives from the other side. So IÂ’m sitting here trying to figure out if the #s represent real voter outcome, which means almost all our internals were way the f-ck off, or how they pulled off fraud. That will take time. It wonÂ’t matter for this election, but it will make us better prepared for the next one. Either way, I got to focus and make calls, and try to figure this sh-t out.

Not only do we not know who will be on the field to select from at that time, we don't even know the main issues.

...was there bad blood or something between Romney and other candidates? Were people thinking the Romney campaign was "vicious" or something?
Here you have this boy scout of a man, a guy with a totally squeaky clean record, that the liberals couldn't find any actual dirt on. And online, I read a discussion where many people were just saying things like "well, Romney's a vicious insane bastard so I'm not surprised he lost." And I was all "Huh?" Is that just the usual liberal wishcasting (anyone who opposes us is stupid, insane, or evil, or all three like Bush) or was that because of maneuvering in the primaries or what?
The campaign Romney actually ran seemed not only nice, but too nice. I wanted a one-minute ad that was just hammering on Benghazi... "President Obama says nobody told him an Ambassador was under attack from mortars and RPGs. Is he really that big a liar or is he really that divorced from the duties of a President? The attack took over seven hours but no relief forces were sent. Who gave the orders to stand down the rescues? Obama says he needs an investigation to find out what he knew and when he knew it..." I wanted a one-minute ad that was just hammering on Fast and Furious. "Eric Holder says he had no idea that Fast and Furious was happening. Is he that big a liar or is he that incompetent? And either way, why hasn't President Obama fired him?" I wanted a one-minute ad that was just unemployed people and then Barack Obama at a fundraiser, unemployed people and then Barack Obama on a golf course, unemployed coal miners and then Barack Obama saying "...someone could build a coal plant but he would go bankrupt..."
I don't pay that much attention and I don't watch TV, but I just assumed that ads like these were being run on TV, not directly by the Romney campaign but by his surrogates. (Just like it was surrogates who ran the "Romney killed a woman with cancer" outrage.) Did Romney not have a surrogate arm running ads like those?
For that matter, the actual Romney campaign should have run an ad with people whose jobs were saved by Bain, and end with Romney saying "At Bain we took companies that were just about to go out of business and lay everyone off, and we had a 90% success rate in turning them around. 90%! I'm proud of that." They should have run that ad immediately after the "cancer" ad was on TV. Did they do anything like that?

So that's where it starts.
If the R-party doesn't smarten up soon, and stop being so stupid...I may have to be done with them.

Look guys, you can't blame Sarah Palin for this. Its on all those who insisted Mitt Romney was electable. And all the proof you need that was not true is that no one is talking about "President-Elect Mitt Romney" today. Clearly he wasn't the right choice, or Obama would be out on his ear..
Gov. Palin did what you asked, remained on the sidelines, commented on FOX News - We got the brilliant Mittens to run, and he failed to destroy Obama.
Oh she writes a book or two and now she can't be president. Also dumb. If Arnold can be governor while previously being an actor - Sarah Palin can be president - if she chooses to run.
Maybe less Milquetoast next time who won't spend a debate agreeing with the guy he is supposed to be unseating?

this stings.
If you can make one heap of all your winnings And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss, And lose, and start again at your beginnings And never breathe a word about your loss; If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew To serve your turn long after they are gone, And so hold on when there is nothing in you Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on!"

As far as the entire country is concerned:
The whole housing mess was allowed to grow to gigantic proportions under Bush. Sure, Fannie, Freddie, Barney Frank and Chris Dodd and the CRA had a lot to do with it, but it happened on Bush's 8 year watch. W never got tired of bragging about how home ownership rates were at record high levels, never mind that it was the result of liar loan to people who could never afford them.
There was more than a little bit of crony capitalism involved in all of this.
Then it all blew up and trashed the economy. Bush's response was TARP and gigantic bailouts of the worst offenders.
Medicare Part D was a enormous unfunded new entitlement.
Spending, deficits and the national debt grew a lot under Bush. Sure, nowhere near as bad as Obama, but a lot worse than Clinton. Bush loved big government.
Iraq
Afghanistan
As far as conservatives are concerned:
Bush had control of both the House and the Senate for much of his Presidency. What did we get for that? Precious little. By comparison, look what Obama, Pelosi and Reid did in a mere two years.
Bush would have done amnesty and had to be stopped by a base revolt.
Bush nominated Harriet Myers and had to be stopped by another base revolt.
Bush appointed John Roberts as Chief Justice. How's his Obamacare decision working for you?

160...Gov. Palin did what you asked, remained on the sidelines, commented on FOX News -
"Sidelines?"
She actively led a sort of 'undecided campaign' for herself, for the better part of a year.
Remember her Bus Tour? Rallys?
She raked in a lot of donations doing that...and for what?
It kept a lot of people on the 'sidelines', hoping that she would run.
How many of them stayed home and didn't vote, out of loyalty to her?
I was stoked about her in 2008.
It made it a lot easier to vote for McCain, with her on the ticket.
It was horrible the way the media went after her.
But I can't say that I've been impressed with her decision-making skills since then.
Making such a big deal out of "deciding to run" just made her seem...well, undecisive.
Not what you want in a President.

The MSM interviews were painful to watch, as unfair as they were in some respects. She was obviously not well versed on many important issues. After the failed bid for VP she quits her job as governor early and writes some books and does a few reality shows. Her kids get on other shows.
Then 2012 comes and she makes some noise about running, goes on a bus tour but oddly bails on that too pretty early on. She appears on Fox spouting boilerplate Conservative talking points that have been heard a million times.
She had wattage and charisma at one time and was able to relate to people. She drew big crowds because of that. Unfortunately that is about all she offered. There had to be more substance and she never seemed to get around to doing the tough homework necessary to make herself credible.
I think her fantasy was to see a gridlocked Republican Convention and get drafted in as the nominee so she could avoid the hard work of the primaries. In the end she is kinda lazy.

167I am genuinely curious, and I ask this without sarcasm and malice, how could you not know that Romney was going to lose? And if you cannot assimilate data contrary to your worldview, why would I trust you to run the country?
------------
Romney wasn't the first choice...of a lot of people.
But at least he loves this country, unlike the current occupant of the White House.
It was the fervent hope of a lot of us...that people would vote against the guy who stomps on our Constitution, uses our military as political props, accuses us of being 'racist' if we don't agree with him, wants to take our 1st and 2nd Amendment rights away...and fundamentally change this country into a debt-ridden third world shit hole.

...
i think your spot on in the first part, but i think she, and others, did not run since everyone thought the economy would turn around and this would be a cake walk for jef. A lot of good republicans did not run since they thought it was a sure loss, and Palin was on the top of that list. Well the economy did not recover and jef did not have a cake walk. He did have a big wind and a fat man though.

Conservatives need to disavow Bush and his legacy by name and forget about his stupid brother too. The Bush tax cuts were probably the only good thing but even those have been problematic politically. The wars in retrospect were probably not worth it in terms of lives and treasure. 2 shaky Islamic Republics (that hate us) operating under Sharia will remain AT BEST so I don't see how that is a victory.
Looking back, it was Bush who gave us Obama really. He got blamed for the entire meltdown and stood around like a mute fool, just taking the blame. He clearly wasn't thinking about the party or the country by hunkering down like that.

Yes, he does, by saying that everyone who labels themselves as "moderate" and votes for Barky is actually a liberal who just is afraid of calling himself that.

I realized I also forgot the Transportation Safety Administration on Bush's list of sins. All the groping and political correctness aside, they promised us it would never be unionized. Only took a few years for it to become another giant expansion of arrogant unionized government bureaucrats.

At the end of the day though, I don't really blame Romney for this loss. I do blame his GOTV team however, but you have to ask yourself if it was actually their fault that Republicans sat out the election.
Romney's main problem though was an electorate that has changed and yet he was forced to run on a SoCon platform that still thinks it's 1980.

The recount debacle - I discovered 2 days b4 the 2012 election "the rest of the story" here at ACE. Before that, I had the sense that the D's tried to steal it & the R's stopped them, but I had NO clue what really happened.
That's the electorate. The 1st thing they hear, they believe, and if they lean D, they believe the D, and vice-versa.
Either realize you HAVE to tell the "rest of the story" and FAST, and that you have to connect the dots for people to get them to vote your way, or you are toast.
I figured out that it's all connected, that there IS a finite pie when it comes to gov't resources, but not in the real world. That was NOT explained. How the "virtuous cycle" only works when all the cogs play a role. Too many dragging it all down skews to an oval, and I too was fooled into thinking people got it. But they didn't. They vote on image, not substance.
