— Ace And Twitchy.
Soothsayer's giving me grief about not saying more about the unions. Maybe it's because he doesn't read Twitter, so he's not where I am. Where I am, having beat the Pat Moran story and the union story to death on two different platforms, personally, I'm talked out of it.
Plus, learned futility has kicked in. It's pretty clear that Anderson Cooper, [name redacted], and the rest of the media are simply in the bag for the Democratic party and cannot be shamed or embarrassed out of this position. They are now comfortable with it; they have tried on Open Partisanship and like the way it looks on them.
As usual they will not even address a question from a conservative blogger about why they embargo, yet again, a story that embarrasses Democrats. Oddly enough, though, they will approvingly cite leftwing blogs for arguments which justify their embargo. (They won't call them leftwing blogs, though-- they're just blogs.)
The New York Times, for example, reports that Steven Crowder "selectively edited" his video because I Read It On A Blog (TM).
Although I got into it with Soothsayer, let me be clear about this: I now understand that it is completely futile to note the extreme and blatant partisanship of the allegedly "mainstream" media because they have consciously embraced this partisan mantle. They have decided that their personal political preferences are more important than abstract notions of professionalism (the only thing they care about is the appearance of professionalism -- they will cite leftwing blogs as "objective evidence" for their partisanship, but try to keep the veneer that they're just "reportin' news").
So this is where I'm at: While I used to think there was some value in criticizing or shaming the media, I am now certain that there is no value in it, because they are shameless, have decided that they will carry the water for the Democratic Party with no more cover than the simple assertion that they're not.
"No I'm not" will be the sum and entirety of their objectivity. They just won't address charges that they're biased, they'll just ignore them, and when forced to defend their bias, they'll just say "No I'm not." And that's it.
So this game which I used to play because it seemed winnable no longer seems that way. They have simply decided that they are the DNC's Media Arm. They're not saying so, bu they've decided that. And it is as futile to ask the media why they're not covering the Jim Moran matter, or the union thuggery matter, as it would be to ask the DNC itself.
It would be absurd to ask the DNC-- pointless. It would be pointless to call them politically biased -- of course the DNC is politically biased. And it's the exact same with the media.
I'm not just throwing up random ideas when I say that this current model is futile and pointless and we have to radically rethink our media, and rebuild it from the ground up. It's what I believe.
The media has a perfect defense to criticism-- they simply ignore it and pretend it doesn't exist. And because they control the streams of information and opinion, their embargo actually makes the criticism cease to exist.
We cannot argue with them. They are now simply card-carrying Democratic operatives who hide their cards. They know it, we know it. As they are no longer even pretending (except to say "No I'm not") they know there's no fruitful reason to even pretend they give a shit about the charge of bias.
We really, really do simply have to create our own media. Period. That's it. There is no other option. I can write a dozen posts and a thousand tweets but there's no way ABCNews carries any story that doesn't benefit the DNC and Obama.
If you want to do something, Boycott NBC, which is already on the ropes and can't stand much of a push before it collapses.
But we can't even do that so what's the point?
Leaving only the option to simply create another media.
The Hand and Glove Operation of The Supposedly Objective Media and Leftwing Blogs: The media now exists to advance the Democratic agenda and suppress stories that complicate that agenda.
Leftwing blogs, on the other hand, exist to argue that the media (supposedly politically neutral, remember) did the right thing in that reportage and non-reportage.
Why, the New York Times will even link you if you write up a useful explanation for Why the NYT Didn't Report The News.
Now, the leftwing blogs have simply gone into Defend the Media mode, so the media no longer bothers defending itself. They'll figure out their reasons for embargoing a story after Kos explains it to them.
So they're no longer even entertaining a dialogue, or pretending to have any professional interest in objectivity. The defense of the media's partisan choices has been subcontracted out to ProgGrrrl85 or whoever.

I frankly don't believe this fight is going to be won on the internet, where people gather (naturally so) with those who agree with them.
Or for that matter in the media (which is also becoming tribal in a sense.)
It will be won in family rooms, coffee shops and church basements around the country.

And they even give each other 'attaboys' on how well they advocate their single-minded support of Dems.
They openly revel in their Us-against-Them-mentality.
What steams me...is when some Dem in Congress will use a contrived liberal 'news story' as a lead-in to a rant, and a proposal for a new law.

The big question is, will they pay a price for this?
The big media companies are shedding viewers/readers and cash like Sandra Fluke's cooter sheds a smelly discharge. But they certainly don't think their obvious bias is costing them viewers. To them, its teh internetz! (I had a rather long email exchange with the ombudsman of the L.A. Times about this once, and before he refused to talk to me anymore he basically said this when I pointed out the Times' cratering readership.)
Frankly, at this point I'm not so sure that they're wrong. Given the depths of the inability of the electorate to perform critical thinking on even the most basic level (as demonstrated by O'Fuckhead's re-election) I don't think any level of obvious bias will cost them much of their audience. The audience is too dumb to care. That makes me pessimistic that any of the MSM will ever have the self-awareness or conscious to be ashamed of what they call "journalism."
Maybe we'll have to wait for history to beat them bloody but I'm not even expecting that. I'm afraid these fucks will be the ones who write the history, and what it will depict will be the Triumph of Enlightened Reporting Over the Benighted Forces of Conservative Primitivism.

I know, who reads newspapers anyway, right? But they do exert some influence locally. If the editors are already so disillusioned with preazy they couldn't endorse him, maybe they will be more disposed to treat the coming second term more objectively.

If enough do it to lower ratings by a point, that's a big difference to what they can charge advertisers, and could be the difference between Matt Lauer or Soledad O'Brien getting a nice fat new contract or getting their walking papers.
They need us more than we need them, we might be the difference in that slim margin which means Anderson Cooper anchoring a show for big bucks or doing entertainment beat fluff at 1/10th the salary
Don't give up on the influence of the internet just yet. After all, Dan Rather was taken down by a post on Free Republic, and even though they have no shame it takes time from their day to swat at the flies buzzing around their empty heads.
BTW, the average age of MSM viewership is over 55. Advertisers don't pay the big bucks to reach viewers who already have brand preferences

The problem isn't the narrative crafted by the MSM, most people aren't watching the MSM anyway. The problem is the combined narrative crafted by the MSM, academia, K-12 education, non-news TV (Comedy Central/MTV/AMC/HBO/SHO), magazines, Hollywood movies, the art world and popular music. The left owns the culture, creating Fox News 2.0 minus the right leaning pundits on in the evening will have zero impact I'm afraid.
If they can ignore non-biased Bret Baier's reporting on the Benghazi scandal then they can ignore his non-biased "New Network" counterpart's reporting on the Crowder beating.
We have to win back the culture first and we need a more comprehensive plan for that. Step one: figure out the details of how the left took over damn near everything and how we let them. Until that happens this is all just talk.

Let me get this straight.
During the peak of economic good times and US global dominance, The Left, masters of reality and purveyors of projection that they are, see a slowdown on the path to national ruin as a Really Bad Thing and freak out.
Smash cut to 2012 and Republicans, during the 5th year of the Next Great Depression, see doubling down on socialism, creeping loss of liberty, and diminishing world influence as a Really Bad Thing and freak out.
Yep, pretty much the same. Got it.

Used Rohn 25 sections can sometimes be had for free, and sometimes you have to pay $50.00 a piece. Guy wire is cheap, and a 100' tower really doesn't need all that much anchorage. The stuff is easy to stack, you just have to not be afraid of heights.

Objective journalism has coasted on (an only halfway deserved at it's height) a reputation for standards and integrity in reporting the news. Some really bought into "get the story" that sells, at least. But even that projection of past standards onto the present doesn't change the fact that the press has been biased and bought for almost all its history in this country. Only extreme competition made reputation important and the image of objectivity desirable.
Only high competition will bring it back. Gatekeeping has benefitted from resting on laurels and credentialism - long marches in the institutions, a public stupid, and mis-educated, and illiterate willing to be led was essential as well. People don't think - they don't know how, and they are cut off from their history or carefully taught it is objectionable or irrelevant.
I'm not sure a top-down solution can succeed without a suitable audience, but perhaps maximum push-back, the other side, the whole story, can do something to help people understand that their news has been filtered and to a purpose. Maybe.

The American media and Hollywood have hated Republicans since Nixon. And I mean since Nixon was VICE-PRESIDENT, starting in 1953. Hollywood never got over HUAC and the McCarthy hearings and the blacklist. To this day they think that if you scratch any Republican, you find Joe McCarthy or Dick Nixon inside.
When Nixon was President, he was mocked mercilessly by comedians and Hollywood. Saturday Night Live became a huge hit largely because of Chevy Chase's stumbling, bumbling impersonation of Gerald Ford. And of course, Reagan was portrayed as a vapid B-movie actor with a shrew for a wife.
I suppose the cheerleading for liberals has gotten a little more overt these days, but the hatred for Republicans has always been there.

"We aren't measured"
When Ace brought up the idea of boycotting NBC a while ago, some of us brought up the list of channels they own.
I don't watch anything on NBC, but USA and SyyyFyyy are a different story.
Most of the time nobody could know that I watch them, but occasionally I do watch shows online, either at Hulu or Netflix and I watched a couple CBS shows on their site when my sat. receiver hiccupted and didn't record.
Those count. How much, I have no idea.
Getting online conservatives to not watch NBC shows online and maybe target some big advertisers on popular shows might be a thing.

Thus, another outlet, with a DIFFERENT niche... is what is needed so they don't really compete with Fox's niche...
Note.... there are 5 or 6 major Left leaning media outlets... and ONE Fox... which allows them to gang up on Fox... and people to dismiss it...

Bingo. That idea is the wound through which the nation is bleeding dry. The 24th amendment was a HORRIBLE mistake. (Specifically the last three words "Or other tax.")
The 24th amendment separated the cost of government from the benefits received from government. It was as if someone cut the connecting rod from the governor to the engine throttle, and the results are exactly what anyone should have been able to predict.
The 26th amendment was also wrong-headed and foolish, because people grow up a hell of a lot in the three years between 18 and 21.
I'm for letting anyone vote, so long as they pay taxes.
No Representation without Taxation!!!! (But of course it's too late now.)

You can get 10lb of potatoes for as little as 3 bucks. Rice, oats, and other simple grains are also very cheap.
On the protein side beans remain at the head of cheap, along with eggs, and ground meats.
Stews are always the cheapest way to built palatable food. If it's chewable it never gets thrown away if uneaten it gets rendered for gravies or saved for future stews. If not chewable, it gets boiled in stew first then de-marrowed, then thrown away.
Look for bargains on not so fresh veggies. They taste OK in the stew anyway.
Salt (with iodine) is your friend. It covers a lot in the way of marginal ingredients.

To the extent I agree with you, it is because the new media are following the paying demographics. I suspect that consumption of all media falls a lot as people get married and have children, because their spare time becomes limited. Single people and childless couples have entirely different wants and points of view from married couples with children. They are more like children themselves, which is why they are susceptible to messages that government can take care of them and Republicans won't.
There isn't much we can do with a message of "act like grownups, pay your bills, take care of yourself and your family" when a large part of the electorate are overgrown children who don't want to grow up. We ARE the grownups. All we can do is a better job reaching the grownups and getting them to vote.

First, steal from them. Hit them where it hurts. If it's made by liberals and you want to see it, pirate it. Do it without shame -- you are agreeing with their ideals. You aren't stealing -- you are redistributing their wealth to you. It's what you want.
When they promote some charity or cause, find out what they contributed. Then figure it as a percentage of their income, and tell people how much they REALLY gave. McCartney, AFAIK, gave no cash to Sandy. He's worth $800 million. Peg it to the median salary -- $45K. For every $17,777 McCartney donates, everyone making $45K should donate... a dollar. If they won't pony up, we shouldn't pony up.
It's the basis of Alinsky -- make them live up to their own moral code.

#187 I love to concern-troll like this on liberal blogs and on the liberal Twitter hashtags. But I keep getting banned.
My favorite one is asking why Hollywood won't show gay men having buttsex on any TV shows, even on cable. And where are the queer characters in "Homeland"? This homophobia must end!

You can't blame the non-voting conservative miasma on the liberal media, however. That's a function of individual derangement. And the liberal media doesn't vote on legislation, issue executive orders or nominate judges. Politicians do. The ghastly irony is that substantial numbers of erstwhile and putative conservatives would not be able to connect the obvious dots, even if you used a puppet show.

Leaving only the option to simply create another media.
And internet is a main platform for this creation. Obama, Democrats and the media will fight this with everything they have to prevent this and if all else fails they will hand the internet over to the UN to accomplish it.

In real life, the people I know mostly think I'm at least slightly more awesome than they are, and when they reference or quote a TV show or movie or "meme" or whatever and I don't know what they're talking about, some of them are sort of ashamed that they do know it.
Presume that it's you who decides what's worth talking about. And don't join in anything that's not Yours.

Ace, I agree. My main point was that an additional non-partisan news network will not reach any new viewers. The same people who have already rejected the MSM for Fox would end up being 90% of the viewers at this new network. We have already have their attention, it's not enough. I think it would be extremely successful and I would welcome an expanded non-leftist MSM but the impact on the popular culture would be negligible.
We didn't lose this last election because the enemy controls the MSM. The MSM wasn't feeding narratives to the masses that they hadn't heard 1000 times before as they worked their way through 12 years of public education, listened to top 40 pop songs, spent 5 years in college getting a psychology degree they'll never use, watched 3 or 4 big feature films a month and tuned into Jon Stewart a few times a week.
I think it has to go beyond political/news media answers. We like politics and the news, it's our thing. That's not where the fight is being won and lost though. The GOP is seen as evil and homophobic because how many girls are bopping their head back and forth to Lady Gaga's Born This Way?

The Lefts weakest spot is their lack of faith. They have no faith in anything they believe, say, or do. They are a conglomerate of takers...so if there is nothing left to hand out, their whole thing will crumble.
For the MSM, its all about their image. I say keep up the frontal attack on the MSM types and take their image from them. It doesn't matter.
It doesn't matter what we write here, or what Ace writes or any of the cob-loggers.
The effect on the society at large is infinitesimal. Un - measurably small.
Bring down Anthony Weiner? So What? One out of many, and someone else just takes his place. He was a lightweight fool, and he would have done something else just as stupid later. Why can't we get rid of Jim Moran or McDermott or some of the other really damaging assholes of the Democrat party? Why? Because they are bullet proof.
What we do here is for our own mental health, a place to air greivances and remind ourselves that we are not alone. We have to struggle and persevere in our beliefs. But most of what happens here and is said here makes absolutely no difference. At all.
All the rancor about whether or not Mitt Romney was a good nominee or not? Nothing, made no difference anywhere. Outside of the few hundred that regularly participate and perhaps the thousands that read and lurk from day to day, it makes no difference.
Bring down the Mass Media? Really? Multi-billion dollar corporations. Really? Weapons to hurt them. Really?
We can kid ourselves but it just doesn't make any difference. The die was cast decades ago, and the effort to reverse the damage at this point would be monumental. We just don't have the numbers or the ability to make an impact. Most people are just scurrying about to make ends meet everyday.
Real people don't have the time or staying power to fill out the ranks of a mass movement, until things are at the point of imminent disaster, and we are not there yet.
Seeing your words next to your name or nic may be gratifying at times, and it is indeed re-assuring to know that somewhere out there, people agree with you or think alike. But nothing that happens here makes any difference.
Sorry to be a Debbie Downer and write such a defeatist comment, but now it looks like there is absolutely no way that our Republic can or even should be saved. It was killed by hate, envy and stupidity.
Obama will be President for four more years, and for years afterward, will be hailed as a great statesman and historic president. Just like the disastrous cocksucker FDR still is today, after all the ruin and stupidity he was responsible for.
There is a lot of ruin in a country.

Lower ratings than Fox is not NO ratings at all. They're still profitable, or they'd be gone. Unless your arguing some vast DNC conspiracy slush fund keeping them afloat, which I would entertain hearing for about 10 seconds before I lose interest.
Oh, I almost missed this. The premise is that media has influenced people to vote Democrat, yet the highest rated cable media news failed to persuade their viewers enough to get them to get off the couch and cast a ballot. Explain that.

1) break the rotten back of the teachers unions, NEA and dissolve the DoE. Decentralize education back to the local and district levels.
2) give incentives for school vouchers and promote home schooling.
3) if you can't do these things as a parent, it is your responsibility to know what your child is being taught every day and to correct the damage and lies there and then.
4) run for your local school board and/or go to every meeting.
All this presupposes we have parents who are not themselves infected with liberalism.

Posted by: HeatherRadish™ at December 13, 2012 05:10 PM (/kI1Q)

The truth may hurt, but Barack Obama just got reelected by convincing a whole lot of young men and women that government student loans, government-mandated "free" birth control, same sex marriage, and "tax fairness" are their keys to Nirvana, and that Republicans are all stingy poopyheads who think God wants women to be raped and have the babies.
This campaign was no accident, it was not only tested by polls but developed with consultations from psychologists who told Team Obama how to reach young people with messages that resonate with them. These messages basically treated young single people like children and promised them sex and toys. And they worked.
You tell me how conservatives are supposed to respond to this. We can't promise them sex and toys.

Rush has a big mouth. He tells the truth as long as he can make a buck saying shit that sounds truthful. The very essence of media commentary is rhetoric, not truth. They might say some things that are true - but that's not Truth, as you imply it is. Rush and every other political commentator is trying to pursuade you to believe what he wants you to believe. Mostly, that you're a patriot, that you're noble, and your views are correct. That means you'll tune in regularly, his advertiser's have willing ears, and everybody on the inside of the radio gets fat and giggly on your dime. He's done more to undermine the GOP than MSM ever could, cuz he did it from the inside, pitting the tea party against the GOP establishment. You want to blame someone? You can start there.

And the real solution becomes self evident when you have one side that is impervious to civil discourse or argument or persuasion. And has used all their power to shut down those avenues of peaceful discourse. When all else is taken away there is only one thing left to do....
And I'm not trying to be coy. But the answer is to fight. Literally. But I also know that I'm getting too old and too out of shape to accomplish anything other than to get myself killed.

Yes, in many bad ways. We are in for a whole host of "surprises" in the next four years, and beyond.
People, many people, hunger , THIRST for ideas and reasons to explain what is happening. But they are not buying what Ace, or Rush Limbaugh, or Glen Beck are selling. People buy into ignorance because it is simple. I hear it everyday and have to bite my tongue to keep form blurting out the obvious insult.
Sure, Limbaugh is a wealthy man being a media figure. And he certainly has listeners and so does Beck. But what they have is a fraction, and it will never be larger than that. It is not what people are buying or listening to.
Don't give up, but just realize that what happens here has no consequence whatever. And I don't mean that to insult the efforts of Ace or anyone else. I didn't say that Fox has the same access to everyone, but they, the number 1 station, couldn't motivate the base to vote. I do have a question for you: is Fox overtly biased against the Democratic party, because they claim to be fair and balanced. What is their distinction, to you, specifically. And in Chicago, the conservative stations WIND and WLS both bury the lone weakling prog radio. Bury it HARD. Okay, that's the heart of Obama land. I get that. but I would venture to guess that SRN and ClearChannel proliferate far more than the progs on radio. Radio is a conservative haven, even in the people's republic of Chicago.

I used to be really opposed to pirating music or movies. I just don't think stealing is right. But my son, who is an aspiring film composer, does it all the time and says his conscience is not bothered by it at all and he does not consider it stealing. The point of making music is to have people hear it, not to make money. He says if more people hear his music by downloading it and wouldn't buy it, he is happy. Completely changed my opinion.

Here are some other things I have concluded about this topic:
1) none of this is an accident, because all the people you are talking about get a paycheck, and those that fund the paychecks are fully aware of what the recipient of the paycheck is doing. If those that fund wanted those that act to stop, the paychecks would stop -- and they never do. Accidental paychecks have a time limit. I now refuse to believe any of the media crap that the individuals don't have the full backing of those corporations for whom they work.
2) those that fund the media paychecks have a vested interest in owning our government -- that is why they do what they do. No matter how much they may lose in the media venture it is still a price they are willing to pay. There is simply no doubt they will make up the money in other ways. For example, if one owns congress, one can sell a lot of turbines, so it does not matter if one loses some money in one's media venture as long as that media venture helps one own congress.
3) I have boycotted. It's not that bad. I miss football, but I am getting over it. Turn their shit off and don't go back. It has actually been an improvement in my life not to subject myself to their bilge.
4) Focusing on the media portion of the empire will be ineffective. Think bigger. Someone is funding a paycheck. Why? How can you get those that fund the paycheck to conclude that a different path would be a better choice for them?
5) An Art of War approach is needed here. The powerful are vulnerable, but not in obvious ways. Tactics are needed that use their strength against them. No single tactic will work, and those tactics that do work will not continue working indefinitely. This will be a long struggle.
6) This struggle is not trivial. Those that are funding the media so they can own the government want to own the government so they can own you. Thanks to John Roberts' view of the unlimited taxing power of Congress owning the media has become a gateway to slavery.

You know, this is the essence of the Romeny 47% crack, as well as his comments aftrer the election that Obama appealed to the "free shit" army. That may be true. Gingrich, Jindahl and George blasted his comments. George Will made the observation that it's one thing if it appears that voters don't like you. It's waaaaaayyyy worse if it appears that you don't like voters. Either Will is wrong, or you are. Go ahead. Tell me who's right on this one.

I agree to some extent. Ron Paul was run out of town by the right.
BUT....
Ron Paul's appeal was and is quite limiting I think. Yes he got 2000 people to show up on college campuses. But how did that translate into votes for him? It didn't.
And let's be honest here. His appeal to the 20 somethings wasn't because he wants to cut spending. It's because he wants to legalize pot. Which is fine by me, legalize it all as far as I am concerned. But don't kid yourself into thinking the stoner at a Ron Paul rally is also in favor of reducing Medicaid or Food Stamps. Chances are he's ON medicaid and food stamps.

And this is an outcome that I would consider as positive, though highly unlikely of occurring in the near term. No, I think even the conservative states are going to be forced over the cliff because it is not so simple to cut the chains to the Liberal states.

The "Red" States (God I hate using the color pushed on us by the MFM back in 1992) will not escape the burn. We are chained to the "blue" (communist) states by a common currency, and short of secession it is not possible to avoid the financial collapse of the American Dollar.
We are going to burn too.

So, you're saying he's a revealer of truth and not a rhetorician? Do you know what rhetoric is, and what a rhetorician does? Politicians aren't ideologues, they're rhetoricians. A car salesman is not a truth-teller -- he's, you guessed it, a rhetorician. I hope that was illuminating.

I am thinking they won't be able to do it without the cooperation of the Farmers, at least to the extent that a lot of their supporters won't survive the starvation.

Gingrich. Will. Jindal. They all said he was nuts -- not for thinking it, but for saying it out loud. What they didn't say is that, in voters' minds, his post-election statements confirmed his antipathy towards most Americans. They said that, not me. Two conservative politicians and one conservative commentator who were pulling for the GOP, and pulling for Romney -- and he didn't have the presence of mind to know how is words are heard by the electorate he was supposedly capable of leading. He embarassed them, and no one put a gun to their heads to express their disbelief at his stupidity. And, by association, your own stupidity.

I think they would, even with the knowledge that it will hurt in the short-term. We Americans in the middle of the country like our freedom. We have our share of liberals (yes we do) but the liberalism here just doesn't seem as radical as it is in the northeast or the west coast. It seems more in the order of what it used to be; a difference of opinion.

People get more conservative when they get some skin in the game: owning a home, owning a business, having kids. The Dems don't want that to happen, unless they are in charge. Ergo, free birth control, student bailouts.
I saw the light about six months after Bubba Clinton was elected. I went to my accountant to get my taxes done. Give me those middle class tax cuts! I said. He, a big Repub, sat back and laughed his head off at me: Didn't you get the memo? He took them back! Didn't know how had the budget really was! I saw the light.

Why don't you ask some of the standbys out here what they think of Rush. Even a ditto head has to admit he's anti-GOP establishment. He's far more interested in cultivating a listenership than government leadership. I'm not saying he wanted Obama to win, but Rush's ratings go up when there's a big, common enemy to whip on a daily basis. Let's just say Obama winning was a happy accident for El Rushbo. That's the BIG PROBLEM, right there. THEY HAVE NO MORAL CODE! This is why charges of hypocrisy don't seem to stick to the left. Lying, hypocrisy, fraud, cronyism - none of this is a problem if it advances the socialist agenda. These are revenue enhancers, not shameful vices.
I'm with Ace on Let It Burn. The squishy middle needs to see first hand the horror and futility of socialism. They need to experience hauling a wheelborrow of cash to buy a loaf of bread. They need to know for themselves the dead-end of living without thinking.
Then, and only then, can we on the right pick up the pieces and re-create a Constitutional Republic.
In the mean-time, we must work to educate as many as possible, and likely as covertly as possible, in the virtues of free-market economics and accountable, representative government. It may be too late to re-infiltrate the very institutions that we slowly and silently surrendered. It is never too late to get involved with mentoring and, to borrow a concept from Christianity, friendship evangelism.
We've lost the national political arena, but we can still have an impact in certain states and localities. Focus on local, local, local.

Right now the free market is distorted by a few large players controlling most of the copyrighted content (movies, tv, music, etc). That's bad enough but as Ace point out, these folks now have enough mojo to create their own reality in which they a disinterested, non-partisan observers.
That would be bad enough but, and here's the thing, the worst sitting president in modern memory was re-elected by mobilizing low-information voters. In other words by the consumers of media.
Boycotts will not work because:
High-info, Republican voters are not the media's target demographic. The media we consume around the edges is just gravy to them. If we all went cold turkey, as in no NFL championship game, it still wouldn't make a dent. And who here is ready to miss the big half-time show?
Building an alternative media will not work because:
FOX News. It has high ratings mostly from high-info right-leaning voters. And it's general reputation among the rest of the population is... little better than any random center-right blog. Just how it is. Murdock makes money, that's fine but it isn't winning hearts and minds.
It is cost-prohibitive and ultimately doomed to try and compete unless and until the dominant media has been mortally weakened.
I hate to say it but we are not going to win until we destroy the media advantage the Democrats have. Everything else: deck chairs, Titanic, iceberg.
You have to attack the revenue stream. The revenue stream is copyright. Return copyright to something that more closely approximates the founders' intent and you create pink slips at NBC.

One caveat: Don't download any Norah Jones. I've been a superfan for 10 years. She's talented. She's nice. She doesn't politicize her work. What can I say, she does it for me. She deserves every penny. That's all. Carry on.

Ace, one thing I've noticed from the local progs is that they drip with the word "postmodern". It turns out the way they use it is as projectional as everything else they do.
You know the whole "postmodern" schtick where everyone is in their own little head and they have accepted it as their reality and there's no point in arguing with them because they can't comprehend anything but their own reality?
Well, they're on their own little asteroid with their sheep and their rose under a bell jar, and have declared it "the reality based world". Ad nauseam.
And everyone who does not recognize that their reality is the one and only true and REAL reality is just in their own little postmodern racist homophobic woman hating fake "reality", poor teabagging idiots who can't understand why their unearned privilege has come to an end.
I had a small success today: the primo progblogger in my little corner of the planet was shamed, by me, on facebook, into switching from posting Twinkie memes from "Americans Against the Republican Party" to recycling her anti-violence memes that were coming wo dozen a day when the VAWA was the shout of the moment. I reposted their Twinkie/teabagger meme with the heading "Dem congressman's son, his girlfriend, and a prog feminist walk out of a bar..."
Within two minutes there was some very small acknowledgement that what happened was wrong.
Shame can happen, which is nice.

They continue to bleed money and are very unprofitable. Most media companies are bad investments. In a capitalist society, one would start to envision the end of these companies.
They are mostly supported and invested in by like minded people or funds that invest in conglomerates. But eventually people get tired of losing money and they will be abandoned. Papers such as the NYT are very close to facing their own fiscal cliff.
Some have tried adding a token Republican or person alleged to be Republican. Then we have people like Jake Tapper who throw a cookie to Republicans every so often under the guise of "balance". Sure.
Should media organizations start to face their end, watch how the Democrats move to support these companies with our tax dollars using some lofty strawman as their motive.

You know that is why those people stand in the window at the Today Show, why people get in the background and wave during football interviews, why so many no-talent losers show up for American Idol auditions.
So have a network with lots of shows which let regular people appear and showcase their skills or talents. AND their kids!
Have a show called "This Week's Best Recipes" where 5-10 local, no-name cooks show their special dish.
Have a show about piano-playing kids, or tap dancing kids, or kid musicians. (Once upon a time this was called Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts.)
Have competitions between small towns for the best 4th of July parade, with prizes awarded. Take tours of State Fairs, or the best state parks from each state.
Guy Feieri (or however you spell it) has made an entire show out of touring diners all over the US. Why not something similar only about unusual attractions, such as Holiday World in southern Indiana?
You have to have shows which grab eyeballs, and the message has to be very understated. I have LOTS of ideas, just no money.

I don't have a lot of time, so forgive me for not reading all of the comments before I post.
But I have an additional data point that supports your position - that the media has just given up pretending to be nonpartisan. Have you seen any "Whoops, we were too biased this past election" articles this time around?
It used to be that for each presidential election, the media would be horribly biased for the Democrat and would push hard to get them elected. Traditionally, a couple days after the election, the Ombudsman would look back on their paper's performance and admit that yeah, things were a little lopsided. This would usually end with a promise to look into it, an introduction of new editorial controls, assurances that they would do better next time, blah, blah, blah.
The classic example is Deborah Howell's article "An Obama Tilt in Campaign Coverage", November 9th, 2008 in the Washington Post.
So... where are the mea culpas this time around? I think they've just decided that it's not worth the pixels. Because they don't even have to pretend any more.
