— Open Blogger The Life of Pi is in movie theatres and has made quite a splash with all of the usual suspects in the entertainment world who are lavishing praise on director Ang Lee's big screen adaptation of Yann Martel's 2001 fantasy adventure novel. Martel's novel turned movie is captured in rich 3-D and computer graphic imagery (CGI) effects that activate the senses in spectacular and shocking proportion. But beyond the spectacular and shocking cinematic aesthetics lies an interesting confluence of plot within a most clever theme trained on postmodernism. And if you don't know what postmodernism is... look it up as mom would say. And while you're at it, also check out nihilism for a twofer. Clearly you know I jest. It's just that my patience has been on the wearing side ever since running a Thanksgiving charity 5K race, backwards as it were, then tripping over a perfectly placed orange pylon and landing on my shoulder. Running backwards to tell others to speed up while tripping over something clearly marked....I just know there's a lesson in there somewhere to be found. So please excuse any coarseness of verbiage slopped within this here post on this fine smart military blog. Speaking of Tony Blankley... I do miss Blankley. Not only his sharp wit and arc weld tour de force writing style. But I miss him for his ability to put up with John McLaughlin. McLaughlin's ability to carry on while attempting to shut his guests down is brilliant in a sort of styrofoam way. But if I mention John McLaughlin, I should also mention Jack Germond as we only got Tony B. in the Mc'round after the Germond vs. McLaughlin donnybrook. So good on Jack, I suppose. And if I mention Jack Germond, I would be remiss if I didn't mention SNL and Chris Farley.
So moving right along and getting back to Pi, what is going on in the film is deeper than what can be fully perceived in the immediate. And as is so often the case, those in the cinema seats take the bait with eyes, ears and mouths wide open. But as stated, the film is deeper than what can be fully perceived in the immediate and as such, I suspect it only fair to cut the average moviegoer some slack on the point. Perhaps some ingenious tech savvy entrepreneur could make an app for moviegoers to alert them of movies which are duplicitous and clever... The app could have a nice Sherlock Holmes icon with a magnifying glass... color coded of course to match other popular apps of our i-phonic age...like those of Keeping up with the Kardashians and TMZ. Just a thought. For we like to keep it real here to a fault.
The point in all of this if there is indeed one to be made is found in the flash and dash of our age where the anything goes postmodernism of it all has taken to pervading the culture to such a degree that you can now have objective minded folks so starved for any hint of ethical discourse that they will actively seek out and plant their flag in a film whose vision and so called genius is a kalidescope into the bizarre set in bold metaphor.... a pantheistic metaphor of plural gods, scriptures, creeds and paganism intertwined together in a super-blend of "it's all good" in 3-D and CGI.
Pi is a remarkable commentary in allegorical proportions of just how far advanced we have become in our ability to reach beyond and into a place of pluarality, for life's meaning, where everything is accepted as right and where there are no moral limitations and where everything is squared under the rubric of moral relativism... and the feel goodism of high fibre polythesim.
A new religion is being formed right in front of us... where the churches have no pews... just seats with cup-holders and big silver screens.

So...does the Tiger represent Islam?
And we have to feed the Tiger in hopes that he won't eat us?
Haven't seen 'Life of Pi', but it seems kind of stupid and touchy feelie...from the previews.

The Social Evolution of Conservatives vs Liberals
The division of the human family into its two distinct political branches occurred some 10,000 years ago, when humans coexisted as members of small bands of nomadic hunter/gatherers.
The pivotal event of societal evolution was the invention of beer. This epochal event was both the foundation of modern civilization and the occasion of the bifurcation of humanity into its two distinct subgroups: Conservatives and Liberals.
Once beer was discovered, it required grain, and that was the beginning of agriculture. Neither the glass bottle nor aluminum can were invented yet, so it was necessary to stick close to the brewery. That's how villages were formed.
Some men spent their days killing animals to barbecue at night while they were drinking beer. This was the beginning of the conservative movement.
Other men who were weaker and less skilled at hunting, learned to live off the conservatives by showing up for the nightly barbecues and doing the sewing, fetching and hair dressing. This was the beginning of the liberal movement. An interesting evolutionary side note: some of these early liberal men eventually evolved into women.
Liberal achievements include the domestication of cats, the trade union, the invention of group therapy and group hugs, and the concept of democratic voting to decide how to divide the meat and beer that the conservatives provided.
Over the years, conservatives came to be symbolized by the largest, most powerful land animal on earth, the elephant.
Liberals are symbolized by the jackass. Modern liberals like imported beer, but most prefer white wine or imported bottled water. They eat raw fish but like their beef well done. Sushi, tofu, and French food are standard liberal fare.
Another interesting evolutionary side note: most of their women have higher testosterone levels than their men.
Most social workers, personal injury attorneys, journalists, dreamers in Hollywood and group therapists are liberals. Liberals invented the designated hitter rule because it wasn't "fair" to make the pitcher also bat.
Conservatives drink domestic beer; they eat red meat, and still provide for their women. Conservatives are big-game hunters, rodeo cowboys, lumberjacks, construction workers, medical doctors, police officers, corporate executives, soldiers, athletes, and generally anyone who works productively outside government. Conservatives who own companies hire other conservatives who want to work for a living.
Liberals produce little or nothing. They like to "govern" the producers and decide what to do with the production. Liberals believe Europeans are more enlightened than Americans. That is why most of the liberals remained in Europe when conservatives were coming to America. The liberals crept in after the Wild West was tamed by the conservatives and then created a business of trying to get MORE for nothing.
Liberals don't believe in equal opportunity, but they do believe in equal outcomes. Liberalism is a mental disorder characterized by serial lying, personality disorders, and sociopathy.

Perception is reality, so call it a different name.....
In all seriousness, I see it most often applied to morality - there are no absolute rights or wrongs, but merely what works for you. Hence the ever-increasing emphasis on tolerance as a virtue.

Coors Light is made by a firm called "Molson Coors." Does that sound domestic?
Budweiser and its "family of brands," including some imitations of imports and craft beers, are owned by the former Interbrew, of Brussels, Belgium.
Miller and its "family," sadly including Leienkugel, are owned by SAB, that is, South African Breweries Ltd, of London, UK.
Volume brewing and the associated distribution is a completely unionized industry. And yet people who will not ride in an American company's car will drink those "products" and fell patriotic about it. I don't think that's very consistent. Foreign ownership, union workforce. Let's face it, this is an excuse for buying cheap. If you really don't care about beer, and just buy whatever is cheap, that is all right. Just admit it and say so.
Incidentally, we have a lot of great beer in the US. But beware! Some of it may be made by guys with beards! Jesus christ, we couldn't have that now.

The thing with post-modernism is that it is based on the fact that humans, contra Locke, do not merely receive emperical data but interpret it according to a pre-conceived understanding of how the world works (a paradigm). This is why, for example, conservatives and liberals can look at exactly the same facts and come to such differing interpretations. Post-modernism is essentially a happy nihilism in that it dispairs of ever being able to actually go beyond one's personal biases and paradigms and reach even an imperfect understanding of reality. With reality unknowable, the energy of post-modernism is devoted towards creating the pleasantest illusion possible.
Language is an important part of this - post-modernism started off as a literary theory. Language is, after all, a human construct - words do not have any meaning apart from those mutually agreed-on by listener and speaker, and meanings change over time and are often imperfect means of communicating ideas. Pretty much everyone has had experience with this at one point or another. Words also carry emotional baggage, which is why most people curse, and why we use euphemisms to avoid using particular words when we do not wish to excite emotions that might be raised if we used to the standard word (eg: "choice" versus "dismembering an unborn baby alive"). The post-modern insight was that language itself has can change our perception of reality, and since they believe reality is inaccessible and therefore irrelevent, control of language (including narrative, not just vocabulary) is perhaps the most important tool for constructing (perceived) reality.

I'm somewhat prejudiced against the movie (haven't read the book yet) simply because the first previews I saw for it weren't identifiable as previews--they were commercials about saving the tiger, interspersed with some footage of the film. The whole nine yards about how we need to save what we have brought to the brink of destruction, etc, here's how you can help, no mention whatsoever of the movie.
It didn't make me want to see it when, a few days later, the same footage was present in a trailer actually advertising the movie.

Posted by: In Cognito at November 24, 2012 08:23 PM (JCIjD)
I have to say that is one of the nicest things anyone has said to me in a long time.
Regarding the wall: I believe that it isn't so much that they deny the existence of physical reality - I suspect that most are big fans of "science"- it is that they are basically agnostic about the meaning of reality. Their head would hurt, but they would consider it your fault for having suggested that they bang it on the wall (because it makes them feel better) and regard your declaration that it was their own fault for having done such a silly thing as merely your own way of feeling better about the world and no more inherently valid than their interpretation.
"I reject your reality and substitute my own" is primarily a statement about value and meaning, not the existence and location of matter.

On your side of the argument, a great deal of theoretical sub-atomic physics is just as bone-headed as postmodern relativism. In fact, its practitioners get along pretty well, and see them as somehow connected. Watch out for those guys.
I have argued for some time that given the choice of learning the history of thought and figuring out your own engineering, or learning engineering and leaving the higher thought to others, you'll actually do less damage winging it with the engineering. To that end, I've built a car and several buildings and I'm still alive. Every day I see the sad consequence of otherwise well-trained people led through a Roman wilderness of pain by their lack of understanding of ethics (the study, not the buzzword), aesthetics (that's movie reviews to you) and epistemology (how did you know?)

Don't.
I myself attended a university, way back when. That university was a politically-correct hellhole. I never donate to the place - my parents had to pay tuition, and that's more money than they deserve. It's just somewhere I had to punch my ticket, to get a semi-decent job.
The universities are not your buddies. They are all claiming a whole load of alma-mater, school-spirit bullshit but at the end, they all serve the "Clerisy", the liberal Matrix under which we all must live.

Engineers want to figure out why shit happens so they can make shit happen again, and possibly use that to make different but similar shit happen. Techs just know that shit happens and want to know how to keep making it happen so the engineers won't bother the shit out of us about why the lights are out.
Post-modernists don't deny that shit happens, they just don't care why shit happens and want to debate the meaning of the shit.
I just want to bury them in shit and let them think happy joy joy thoughts forever as long as they leave me alone.

"Have you ever liked a movie adapted from a book you didn't like? "
One for sure: "The Thin Man". I loved the movie with William Powell and Myrna Loy, so I then read the novel, thinking it would be even better. I hated it. Something about Dashiell Hammett's writing makes me feel dirty - everyone in his novel was so ugly and there was a strong whiff of perversion in it. Ugh. The movie, though, is a delight - witty, sarcastic and full of life. I can watch it over and over.

Materialism has been such a driving force in science they are having trouble adapting to the realization that matter isn't made out of anything.

You don't have to be a materialist to believe in an objective reality.
What I meant was that science grabbed hold of matter and kept whacking it into smaller and smaller pieces until there was nothing there, and I mean literally "no thing" in any conventional understanding of the word thing. When you get down to the sub atomic level all we really have is the math and the effects on our instruments of observation. There is no visualization possible and even if you do have some kind of vague thought picture someone can come along tomorrow with better (simpler) math that screws your whole worldview up.

@245 You don't have to be a materialist to believe in an objective reality.
Right. That's how and why we have Objectivists. "Materialism" is a right tricky word though. Used in different ways (pace, po-mo deconstructivists), some a little misleading. Others, even moreso.
But on the Heisenberg approach? Abandon it, I beg of you. That way lies madness. It has softened the great minds of science.
