Liveblogging the CNN GOP Presidential Debate
— andy

CNN. 8pm Eastern.

I wish I could say I was excited about another debate, but I've seen enough of these to last a lifetime.

To overcome the lack of enthusiasm, even the extreme ennui shown by *ahem* certain parties, we're going to mix it up a little tonight. What if there was a liveblog where you could make your own comments?

There are about 25 slots in the liveblog app that can be used for promoting commenters to unmoderated status. We'll fill 'em up tonight with Morons and Moronettes in good standing (maybe even Jeff B.) and just let you guys go.

And before anyone starts bitching, you should know that this will be done in a completely arbitrary and unfair manner, so STFU. The cobloggers will probably spend most of their time just promoting other queued comments, though.

Don't screw it up!!!

Standard reminder: Your comments do not automatically display. So don't ask "Why aren't my comments displaying?" They don't display.

They're not posted comments a la chat room. Instead they go to queue, which the producers (cobloggers) read, and we post them, by hand, if we think they make a good point.

133 @115- Romney isn't someone who makes it easy for conservatives to support him. It's just that we're in a bizarre situation in which the remaining candidates are worse. If 4 years ago you predicted I'd be saying that now, I'd have mocked you for it.

300 I can't believe that Newt is doubling down on the Moon base idiocy. Even more unbelievable is that otherwise conservative people aren't laughing him out of the room for it. Know why the private sector isn't doing it? Because there's no possibility of a profit in it; "incentives" (ie taxpayer money) won't change that.

311 OH shit, a debate?!?!?!

Okay, so I'm coming in and they're asking about space.  The question is absurd.  The answers are worse.

Newt has a shifty answer.  Prizes, incentives, blah blah blah but he still wants the government to man rockets.

Mitt's is incoherent.  He doesn't want to spend money but yeah, let's get the manned space program rolling again.  Hellooooo Apollo!

Didn't care about Santorum.

Paul says we should rocket politicians to the moon.  Preach it!

I'm gonna get shit for this, but Obama's approach has been best.  Government manned space program?  Fuck it!  Really, guys, a government funded manned space program in this day and age is as stupid an idea as they come.  We have a growing private space industry.  That's wonderful and exciting.  But suddenly these guys are taking the Rachel Maddow view of national greatness.  Apparently it doesn't count unless the tax payers are wasting money on an agency, NASA, which can do about one thing at a time.  Virgin Galactic?  Space X?  Well, fuck 'em I guess.

But China!  On the moon!  Hey, we're America.  Been there, done that, got the t-shirt.

328 "Know why the private sector isn't doing it? Because there's no possibility of a profit in it"

Actually there is, but its down the road a ways after the infrastructure to return materials is built.

I see it kinda like the interstate highway system.  It wasn't originally built as a convenience for civilian commerce, rather a high speed transport means for cold war troop/weapons disposition that would be vastly better than using the local state roads.  Once it was built and operational though, a cornucopia of commercial usage appeared and the original military reasons became a tiny footnote almost nobody is aware of these days.

A reactor powered rail gun on the moon could send back a steady stream of valuable materials

That they didn't run this time shows they're not complete idiots or defectives.

The crew that did run are either incredibly naive, massively egotistical, and/or have some bizarre belief that they won't go down in history as the ships captain as the SS America slipped under the the waves.

The cost of putting shit into earth orbit launched from earth is grotesque due to the deep gravity well we live in and the thick atmosphere.  We need to be able to manufacture orbital stuff on the moon and insert it into earth orbit from there directly.

Without ever having to deal with issues like corrosion during construction, and having to withstand earth launch stresses, the methods and materials used to construct stuff on the moon can be a lot lighter and cheaper.

You are right to be worried about the country. But what these guys or anyone says about it doesn't mean a damn thing. This isn't about issues, and that's just as well. You might remember that politicans can sometimes say all the right things, it's the doing of those things that matters.

Which guy will actually take action? Which guy will raise the spirits of the nation? Which guy will surround himself with the best advisors, because no one man can and properly study and understand all the issues facing us.

I'm late to the party and all my info came from scanning this blog. Let me see if I am up on the happenings....Someone let Santorum out of his locker and now he is on a roll. Topic of wife swapping came up and Paul wants to take one of Newt's ex's to Cuba on a bridge he is going to build. Mitt can't decide between Newt's 2nd or current and Newt doesn't care who's wife he takes to the moon.

Whoever the next first lady is needs to one up the current and grow a garden that not only produces lead but requires a hazmat suite to enter. Topless.

Got it. Will continue to check in for updates

533 "To suggest that mining on the fucking moon would be cheaper than on Earth is somewhere between retarded and insane."

The mining costs for materials that exist here aren't the point.  Launching those materials is a whole different story.  2.4km/sec versus 11.2km/sec escape velocity is the key.  From the moon you can launch larger, slower, and a lot cheaper than from earth.

The crust compositions are largely similar in terms of mineral content.

581 In regards to the space debate, when someone figures out a way to manipulate gravity, then we can talk about doing something in space since that would be a game changer. If you want to offer up a prize for reaching that sort of technology, go right ahead but that's the real kicker and until then it's going to cost gajillions of dollars we don't have to do something up there. Mitt was trying to deflect, and he did it very very badly. 613 The Feds subsidize it.

Posted by: eman at January 26, 2012 10:12 PM (pn8u0)

That isn't true, nice try though. Romney got a waiver from the feds to use Medicare Money to pay for the premium support in Romneycare instead of paying for Medicare which they wouldn't need anymore.

The feds no more subsidize it than they subsidize any states dealing with the uninsured.

614 Santorum was right - there's no way Romney can run against Barky on repealing ObamaCare.    Romney has no gravitas on that issue.  Santorum is also right that Romney can never win against Barky.

618 When you are raised a millionaire.  When you go to Ivy League schools and have the best education money can buy.  It is difficult to understand what other Americans are going through.  Sure romney made his own way, his own billions but he's wealthy, the seed money was there for him.  He wasn't a poor middle class kid who has to hope to get into the Ivy League school, work their butt off and then hope someone hires them where they have a chance to use someone else's money to show what they can produce.  I mean someone told me today he's so rich he's financing his own campaign and they said it mocking him with disdain.  Romney can't connect with people.

619 622 - Sorry, I'm just going to have to disagree with you on this. I think Santorum's biggest problem is that he has come off as a weenie, and this one debate, he was tough and didn't back down when challenged. And neither did Romney, when he was knocking Newt's head off, which I thought was good when he did it too. But the take-away from that exchange is going to be Mitt's "not worth getting angry" comment. If I'm wrong, I'll eat... well, somebody's hat, preferably a very small person. And made out of bacon.

621 Pick any of the three candidates and none of them are going to run against Obama on Obamacare. Good grief. We have unemployment at 8%, a stagnated economy, massive deficit spending, etc., etc. and we think Obamacare is going to be the central issue? It's more of an issue for Romney right now then it's ever going to be in the general, yet he's still in the driver seat. But he can't beat Obama because of it?

Posted by: eman at January 26, 2012 06:25 PM (pn8u0)

623 robtr I suspect you mean Medicaid... Also The Fed has said that they can no longer contribute the funding they initially promised... I can't recall the amount right now-but there have been articles about how in debt Massachusetts has become-not only because there is now a short fall in what the federal subsidy will be-but also because the costs of RomneyCare are already over projections by about $150 million and is projected to cost the state some $8 billion over the next two years. iirc Massachusetts is amongst the top five states for debt burden per capita and that is in part because of the cost of RomneyCare.

Posted by: tasker at January 26, 2012 06:26 PM (r2PLg)

624 635:  Well I listened to the debate, not watched it.   and I agree.  Santorum sounded a lot more like someone one could picture running for pres tonight.  I though Romney did well elsewhere and Newt was overly whiney about a few things, but Romney has got to to get better on masscare or at least say loud and clear "its not the solution everywhere" and I will repeal Obamacare and encourage the remaining 49 states to test a broad range of solutions, rather than imposing federal regulations that make every state do almost the same thing.

Posted by: Palerider at January 26, 2012 06:26 PM (dkExz)

625 639 - It's a big deal, yeah. If you allow Obamacare to stand, it will only make all that stuff worse. But you won't hear me join the chorus of people saying Mitt can't win. Sure he can, and although I think it's definitely more of an uphill climb, so could Newt. Santorum? Sure, why not?

Posted by: BurtTC at January 26, 2012 06:28 PM (Gc/Qi)

626 Romney is very proud of romneycare.  It's a part of him.  It's his baby.  There is nothing wrong with that.  It's good to be proud of your work but the rest of America isn't happy with it, not a bit, and they will want it discussed cause it is going to directly impact the economy in ways they are starting to realize in their economic state.

No I am saying all 57 states are mandated by the federal government to provide medicare. All of them. They still get the same amount of funding from the federal government that they did before Romneycare. They used it to help fund the premium support like I said.

Are you saying they should have been the only state in the union to refuse medicare funding? That money comes from the states then it is sent back to the states.

631 None of the Presidential candidates can address the real problem of healthcare cost in the general because if they do, they'll lose. Ron Paul is right on one thing, Medicare and attaching insurance to the employer is the problem. Saying you're going to try to dismantle that isn't going to sit well most people. I've said it over and over again, the fiscal realities we're facing will finally bring reform to our entitlement problem not political will.

634 The engine of our economy is small business. Obamacare is a disaster for companies between 50 and 500 employees. It destroys their cost curves and it strangles their abilities to compete. The vast majority of hiring in a healthy economy is done by smaller businesses. Obamacare is like an economic Iron Curtain, preventing jobs from being created. To get the economy back on track it's essential to get rid of Obamacare.

The point about Romney care was that it is a state program that the overwhelming majority of the state still likes. I don't care about it. I don't live there and I don't have any plans to.

You are either for states rights or you are not. In all of Santorums sniveling about Romneycare what is his plan to change it? Is he going to tell MA that they can't do that anymore? Do we want the feds to tell states what they can and can't do now?

The Romney haters here are welcome to their opinion but when they want to decide what MA does when they live in another state I don't recognize them as conservatives.

Sure, but what does that have to do with the election? Most people won't be looking at some entitlement that isn't even enacted yet as causing the economy to flounder.  It'll be about Obama's ineffectiveness at addressing our economic and unemployment problems. That will be the central issue.

Here's the thing robtr.  I don't care about what MA does in its borders really.  They want socialized government run healthcare, they are welcome to it.  However if someone helped implement it and still supports it and speaks positively of it, that is not a good starting point for me to support them for the nominee.  In other words, Massachusetts can keep its healthcare.  They can keep Romney too.

668 Sorry I got some of the above figures wrong. Correction-this is from the CATO Institute: ********** The Massachusetts plan might not have achieved universal coverage, but it has cost taxpayers a great deal of money. Originally, the plan was projected to cost $1.8 billion this year. Now it is expected to exceed those estimates by $150 million. Over the next 10 years, projections suggest that Romney- Care will cost about $2 billion more than was budgeted. And the cost to Massachusetts taxpayers could be even higher because new federal rules could deprive the state of $100 million per year in Medicaid money that the state planned to use to help finance the program. ********* Here is a direct link to the article- http://www.cato.org/pubs/policy_report/v30n1/cpr30n1-1.html

In fairness, Santorum was not alone in being overly optimistic about Medicare Part D. A number of conservative lawmakers voted for it because they (1) liked the competition aspect, (2) believed it would cause HSAs to become more popular, and (3) wanted to pass it rather than the more expensive bill. That does not necessarily make it right but it does reflect the thinking at the time.

678 697 682 Spacing fail. My primary point is that there was far too much optimism at the time-- from many conservative lawmakers to healthcare experts-- about how Medicare Part D was going to bring about more conservative reforms.

M8oB,

My point is that Santorum was the only guy on that stage that voted for increasing Federal Government Expansion of Entitlements. The only one. Nobody else there did.

680 from business insider:  "This Is The Debate Moment That Will Haunt Mitt Romney In The General Election"

Everyone is talking about this, they have the quote and the clip.

"“Think about what that means going up against Barack Obama, who you are going to claim, ‘well, it doesn’t work and we should repeal,’” Santorum said, addressing the audience. “He’s going to say, ‘Wait a minute, Governor. You said it works well in Massachusetts.’ Folks — we can’t give this issue away in this election. It is about fundamental freedom.”

Newt advocated for passage of the bill and I suspect Romney probably would have voted for it had he been in Congress.

I felt a little bit sorry for Newt.  But mostly for myself.  And America.

BTW, Newt is right about space, not that it matters much.

I am not voting for Newt, and I'm not his biggest fan, but seeing him in person....from about 1 feet away... he looks, walks, acts like a tired little old man.

On the other hand, Santorum is much more handsome in person than is shown on t.v..

690 Dude-shoot me now... I missed the beginning argh! I even tried to tell the cool kids in live blog that you had a seat...did they publish that. Noooooo.... bastages. I put it up thread too-but I thought you just had a chance at getting your question. Hell, I didn't understand that you would definitely get it. dang-and I missed it. %$# Newt looked very tired-even on TV-more so than usual. I thought the lighting even washed Mitt out. And weird Santorum looked about the best or better than he has in other debates.

Awww. Thanks.

CNN called me three times over the past couple of days to tell me that my question had made it past the various stags of selection, but I arrived tonight and still didn't know I would be speaking. However, I suspected I might because I was seated in the fourth row (the first row was media) and there were state party members and legislators seated around and behind me. They came to me about 2 minutes before they went live to say I would be kicking it off.

Huh? What?!!!

Posted by: The kids from South Park at January 26, 2012 08:52 PM (piMMO)

692 Congratulations on the question.

Posted by: M80B at January 26, 2012 09:00 PM (d6QMz)

693 Wow... I missed it because someone had to mute it-but i still had it to CNN so I just rewound the memory or what ever. You did good woman! I just watched it. I think I would have crapped myself-ha!

698 Newt's narrative that he is a master debater that will kick Obama's ass in the fall is now inoperative after 2 flat performances. He raised expectations and failed. We now know the big crowd pleaser he delivered in SC which won him the primary was not factual. He tried to pick a fight with Blitzer tonight for no reason other than to get a cheap applause line and it failed also.

I think it is amusing that Newt's fans are saying he is "right about space". Really? How many of us Conservatives (or anyone else for that matter) were clamoring for a colony on the moon sufficient in size to apply for statehood until Newt just spewed that out the other day?  Oh, that's right, nobody was.  It is a mindless pander to the Florida audience and you all should know better.

That isn't to say that NASA doesn't need a new mission. However, Mitt was right to point out that we have urgent matters here on earth that need attending to, not the least of which is our enormous debt problem.  Spending a trillion dollars on a moon colony hardly makes sense at this point.

Ken Royall,

I was clamoring for it.  I'm not a Newt supporter, but I defend him on space because he's right on space.
