— andy Or, as Jon Huntsman might say, "Liveblogging 南卡羅來納州共和黨辯論". I'm gonna miss that condescending putz, but we'll always have Google translate so no big loss.
Huntsman's exit whittles the field down to the Inevitable Mitt Romney™ along with the Not-Mitt quartet of Gingrich, Paul, Perry and Santorum.
Second look at a double Scotch?
In any event, here we go again: Fox News Channel at 9pm - livestream here.
Standard reminder: Your comments do not automatically display. So don't ask "Why aren't my comments displaying?" They don't display.
They're not posted comments a la chat room. Instead they go to queue, which the producers (cobloggers) read, and we post them, by hand, if we think they make a good point.
Liveblog thingy below the fold.

There's a debate tonight? Huh. How many does this make now? They're just doing this to toy with us, right? I mean, I thought we were all just supposed to lie back, pull the lever for Mittens, and think of England.
Completely O/T:
I fully expect Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, et.al., to denounce Planned Parenthood for their plans to escalate the killing of black babieÂ…..

We are on a path to nominate someone who campaigned against Reagan, campaigned against the Contract with America, campaigned against those who are pro-Life, campaigned against 2d Amendment rights, campaigned against conservatism, and designed and enacted the precursor to Obamacare from which he will not back away.

It'll be a low turnout on both sides. Team Obama may have some trouble getting the traditional Dem vote fraud apparatus enthused though since he's done so many things to burn those people. Without all those smiling little old traditional Dem ladies to cheat for him, his own zombie nation will have steeper learning curve when it comes to fraud.
IMO, it'll be a tossup.

Taiwan just reelected their China friendly president a few days ago. Relations have never been better. I think China/Taiwan will eventually have a rapprochement on amicable terms within the next 20 years. A war at this point is bad for both sides. The Chinese economic boom of the past 10 years changed the dynamic somewhat from the hardcore commie era.

I am wondering if the moderators get to write their own questions, if so, does that mean Juan did it on purpose to make himself look stoopid or because someone else made him look stoopid?
By the way, when does someone like Juan realize that when you are fired or thrown under the bus by the leftists, that just MAYBE, you are not allowed to have your own opinions as a leftist.
I still wonder how long it takes for a leftist to understand that leftism does not allow dissenting opinion?

Double Scotch? The choices on offer in the current GOP field have me doing a cannonball dive into a triple Val-U-Rite. Triple as in three fifths of the stuff, straight up, no chaser, unrefrigerated (not that the cheesy plastic bottles deal well with that to begin with).
There was a note at Hot Gas about how something like 58% of GOP primary voters wish that there were some more and different candidates in the primaries. I am solidly in the ranks of that 58%, and I view the next few months with a feeling of increasing dread.
As I have said before: it is insufficient to merely be not-SCOAMF.
What is required is not-SCOAMF and plausibly electable in the general.
I am not seeing that right now. Did I say three fifths of Val-U-Rite? Let's make that an even four.

Where oh where did his economic brain go? If you have a base in the US, the money spent by the military personnel stays in the country, where if you have foreign bases, that money is spent elsewhere!
Oh well, some day domestic spending and foreign spending will become obvious. During the time of the closing of 100s of bases in the US, someone actually understood that. Now, not so much.

However, total defense spending requested for FY 2012 was $881, less than the $895 billion requested in the FY 2011 budget. This was more than the $855 billion requested for FY 2010, and the Security and the War on Terror request of $782 billion in FY 2009. It includes Homeland Security, Veterans Affairs, Nuclear Administration and some State Department programs. Operations in Afghanistan and Iraq are are also funded outside the Department of Defense base budget, to the tune of $118 billion.

We have eleven carriers, but only about a third of that available, IIRC. Essentially, when you have one on station, you have one heading home and one prepping to go out. So really you have 3-4 available.
When a US aircraft carrier enters a countries waters, it often becomes the most powerful air force, the largest hospital and the largest source of fresh water in the country. From a foreign policy perspective, that's a huge benefit to the US.
Aircraft carriers are not the problem. In fact, they are arguably a very inexpensive defense item, for all the benefits that they provide.

My totally quirky debate response:
the only time one of those guys said anything that made me think was when Santorum criticized Romney for not reducing Social Security bennies and Gingrich for cutting costs to pay for new programs instead of paying for the deficit. I and the woman talked it over and decided that Santorum was right.
Other than that, it was all conservative boilerplate, executed reasonably competently. Except in Paul's case, where it was constitutional and kook boilerplate, also executed reasonably competently.

He said he'd have the border locked down or secured (I forget which) within a year. He's actually not a fan of a long continuous fence along our border, but more boots on the ground, air support, and strategic fencing for securing it.
Honestly I'm not really a fan of a continuous fence either even though it seems like a good idea. I think that would be a case of the amnesty lovers saying "Fence is up, borders secure! Let's legalize everyone!"

McCain got a standing O at a debate in late October 2007 when he criticized Hillary for wanting a museum to celebrate Woodstock. McCain said he couldn't make Woodstock because he was tied up at the time.
Stuff like that and Newt's righteous oratory doesn't translate well into general election debates, unfortunately.

Someone has to sit down and explain private equity and venture capitalism to some of the candidates and some of the questioners. It just makes them stupid when they isolate 1 steel mill and go after that one particular business ignoring all the successful businesses that have been helped. Once people understand the process of private equity then they will think either the candidates don't understand it or they don't want to understand it. Either way, venture capitalism is necessary. And bain is not the only game in town.

It's really standard stuff to release your tax returns. Since Mitt's entire argument for being the nominee appears to be that he's "electable," doesn't prudence demand that he release them now so we can all confirm that there's nothing untoward in them? Why wait until it's too late and we're committed to the guy.
Personally, I assume there is nothing improper in Mitt's returns and we all know that he's a wealthy guy so that can't be the reason he's hesitant to release them. So that makes me wonder what the reason is. I have a couple of theories. One might be that he's made charitable contributions to a group that would be controversial in the general -- perhaps the National Organization for Marriage? I dunno. Another might be something to do with the level of charitable giving he's done.

It's pretty standard for Presidential candidates to release their tax returns. (One site I checked today showed that 27 out of the past 34 candidates did.) Even Obama did it, which is why we know he's a stingy SOB, philanthropically speaking.
Again, I have to ask why the reluctance? We know he's rich. We know he made $360k in speaking fees. Having his tax returns doesn't change any of that. I seriously doubt he is sloppy enough to owe back taxes (the way Geraldine Ferraro wound up doing when she finally released hers).
I think there's something he's reluctant to have seen about his charitable donations.
And as for the class warfare schtick, plenty of Romney supporters have been all over Gingrich for his jewelry purchases, so let's not pretend here.
