Livestream: Lt. Col. Andrew Wood Exposes Weak Security At Benghazi
— Ace

Just starting his remarks now. It's also on CSPAN.

Nordstrom's Remarks. Wood just spoke, now Nordstrom is.

John E. tips this as a WTF?

Nordstrom was worried -he did not know how much the Americans could rely on members of a local Libyan militia in Benghazi that provided security — the “17th of February Martyrs Brigade.” Mostly merchants and shopkeepers before the war, they seemed eager, but they hadn’t much experience and other than a daily $30 stipend for food from the U.S. Embassy, they hadn’t been paid in months.

Hadn't been paid in months.

Right now, he's making the point that the Libyan state was very weak post-revolution, and could not protect embassies as other states could. He lists a series of violent actors -- Kadaffi loyalists, "roaming militias," etc. -- presenting a danger.

However, his thrust, if I understand it, seems to be one defending the Administration.

Not only were the Libyan guards not American (and not being paid), they were also unarmed.

Nordstrom is "proud" of how he and his guards performed.

Proud? In what scenario would you be less than proud?

While Obozo runs lame ads about Big Bird, the real campaign material is being gathered this very moment.

And gee... it looks like the Intel and SpecOps crowd aren't going to throw themselves under the bus for Dear Leader.

Then Mr. Obama replaced them with "shopkeepers" who sold out to AQ for better pay.

But let's all fallaciously smear people for political purposes and then when the affect is evident, lie our asses off and try to blame everyone else except ourselves. It's the Obama way.

These murders are on the hands of President Obama. It's his administration last time I checked. For years he has spouted this tripe and now its contra-intellectual stupidity is there for all to see.

It was a bird in a crate that he'd sent all the way from Texas, yellow and white, spotted. And our little girl Malia, named it "Big Bird." 190 How many actual American security personnel did the ambassador have?  I have heard that two of the guys killed with him just happened to be there at the time and defended him.  Was his driver the only security?  Or even that?

191 LTC Woods: ..the Ambassador struggled with renewing the SST beyond April 5th--that's Ambassador Stevens. [...] In April there was only one US diplomatic security agent stationed there. (Benghazi) [...] We need to be dedicated to understanding the problems that surrounded this attack in order to find a solution. Our failure to do so will result in repeated instances that allow our adversaries to take an advantage over us. My purpose in conveying this information is to prevent their ability to take the life of another ambassador--or kill another valuable and talented public servant working for the diplomatic service of their country.

226 Rep. Cummings did make one, about budget, at the beginning of this hearing. Specifically his claim (which I haven't independently verified) is that the GOP wanted to increase DOD's budget, but reduce State's budget, which reduces the amount State can budget for security. Well, that's a fair point and needs to be part of the investigation. Even within a restricted budget, I doubt they prioritized Benghazi security nearly enough. But of course I don't know how limited they were for resources. But if they were THAT tight, the security situation was bad, and there should have been no mission in Benghazi in the first place. So that's bad decision-making and prioritization, one way or the other. However, NOTHING excuses the incredibly lame coverup.

There was a gas station next to the embassy that even prior to 9/11, President Bush decided was a potential security issue, so the embassy paid good money for it, bought it and closed down the area. At that time (President Bush's administration), only outside security was provided by the locals (completely untrustworthy), inner security was all marines. I am guessing it's all local security (read: cheaper) these days.

The only thing blame shifting from Al Qaeda to some video no one had ever heard of could reasonably accomplish is to stop the calls for retaliation before they began. Telling your enemy that you're on their side, and you're going to cover for them might be... comforting, mightn't it? Now, I don't want to trot out Treason!!!Eleventy! but I think it's important to note that the main people helped by this tactic are the terrorists who attacked us.

Here's one of the many, many things I don't get about the cover up. If TFG, Hillary, etc. had gotten all righteously indignant and gone out there discussing how tragic it was that the joint security measures had failed and how they were now reviewing all security at all embassy and consulate sites and thrown up a few pictures of armed guards around somewhere, it would have been bullshit but it would have looked like they cared about the security and safety of United States personnel. That would have played well because the LIVs out there would have nodded and done the oh we were betrayed but look at how tough Obama is now thing.

Posted by: Anna Puma (+SmuD) at October 10, 2012 09:38 AM (a0qpy)

284 alex, I think the security decisions leading up to this were so bad, and the timeline so damning, they didn't want the media investigating that for weeks. Plus, Hillary's responsible for that. So I think they decided to run out the clock, and brainstormed for an alternative explanation. With real, actual protests in Egypt which resulted in US territory being overun, they had their plausible cover story. They decided to use the fortuitously-timed for them YouTube video as the proximate cause. But Ambassador Kennedy, who is testifying today, briefed members of Congress on September 12th that it was a terrorist attack. Hillary always knew this was BS. Either she went along to cover her own ass, or was strong-armed by Obama to go along. In any case, either or both of them got Rice to do the speaking tour, advancing this line of BS, and Jay Carney did his bit, until he was pulled off about 16 days ago, and hasn't given a full press conference since. It looks like Obama and Hillary were NOT able to run out the clock. And this coverup was absurd. RPGs, mortars, witnesses to both, on September 11th? The fact they thought they could get away with this is almost as damning as the fact they are so unethical as to do it. But hey, they talk about how much they respected "Chris".

Think of the pictures of all the dead skeletal people at Auschwitz stacked like cordwood.  A description of the gassings is nowhere near as powerful as that image.

#273 That's all part of the coverup though.  Stevens was a liberal appeaser who was sent to Libya specifically by Hillary to cozy up to the radicals that the Administration knew were likely to take over in Libya after Gaddhafi was gone.  They opened a consulate in Benghazi as a peace overture and deliberately refused to fortify it in a naive attempt to demonstrate to the locals that we were peaceful and not expecting any trouble.  Stevens' appearance there was supposed to be a sign of respect to the locals.

That's why it was so important for the Administration to blame this attack on the video.  It would blame an idiot American -- and preferably a crazy right-wing American with ties to the Tea Party or the religious Right -- for messing up their thoughtful plans for winning over the Libyan radicals.  Not their initial stupid policy of appeasement and weakness.

I can't vouch for the validity of it, but here goes. I heard it from someone pretty connected in politics in 1980. In 1979, when Jimmah Carter was President the Iranians overtook our embassy and held somewhere ~100 of our people hostage. Soon after, a mob began to form outside the Russian embassy. The ambassador was notified and he walked out into the street. He looked at his watch, and pronounced the time, then said, "In forty five minutes there could be no more Iran." He then turned and walked back into the embassy. The crowd disbursed.

#288 I've been thinking that in the initial chaos of reports about the Benghazi attack, Hillary may have told Obama "don't worry, I've got this, it was connected to the protests over the video" and maybe at first she thought it was.  By the time she found out it wasn't, the Preezy was already on his way to Vegas and she couldn't very well tell him to turn Air Force One around and come back to DC to deal with a terrorist attack, because that would have set off a Four Alarm Media Frenzy.  She also couldn't very well tell him this was probably her fault because she turned down Stevens' request for more security.

I'm sure the political people at OFA were also telling Hillary to downplay the attack in the first day or so in order to make maximum hay out of Romney's supposed gaffe.  None of them can admit that either.

I'm still trying to figure out why they sent Susan Rice on that Sunday suicide mission though.  Everyone knew by then that it was a terrorist attack.  Maybe they were just trying to brazen out the Sunday news cycle and then drip out the truth over the next several days to minimize the damage.

358 >>>It was 100% legal and not at all involved in this. It WASN'T 100% legal, because he violated his parole conditions in raising money for it under an alias, despite previous convictions for financial fraud for using an alias. Look at it this way. Let's say he raised $70,000, spent $30,000 on the video, and kept the rest, unbeknownst to his investors. Usually no one would investigate this sort of transaction, but he was under STRICT parole conditions to not conduct any business using an alias. This was his fault. The law worked as it was meant to.

360 I've been thinking that in the initial chaos of reports about the Benghazi attack, Hillary may have told Obama "don't worry, I've got this, it was connected to the protests over the video" and maybe at first she thought it was.  By the time she found out it wasn't, the Preezy was already on his way to Vegas and she couldn't very well tell him to turn Air Force One around and come back to DC to deal with a terrorist attack, because that would have set off a Four Alarm Media Frenzy.

======================

No matter what they thought it was or as we know, it wasn't.....an ambassador was killed.....3 other Americans were killed.  Obama knew that well before he left for Vegas.

Why did they...Barky, Hillary, Rice, et al...so desperately cling to the story about 'the Video'?

I think it's the Timeline.

Just a few days before this happened, on 09/11/12...at the DNC convention...they were crowing about how Al Qaeda was "on it's heels".

A terrorist attack, on the heels of all that crowing about how 'We've got them on the run!'....makes them look like idiots.

So I think they wanted to keep the Video story alive...until people forgot about all that bullshit they spewed at the DNC convention.

That...and to be able to use it to weaken people's Freedom of Speech rights, when it comes to "slandering the prophet".

The government is not, despite all claims, omniscient.

The government didn't know who originally made the video.  It launched an investigation to find out, even though there was nothing >>>in the video<<< which was illegal.  When it found who made it, they went after him under any pretext they could.

It shouldn't have.  It's bullshit.  It means that any time you speak out, the government could come after you for an unrelated offense.

So a Joe the Plumber with a tax problem is suddenly in Leavenworth after he makes the president look like an idiot.  Our system is supposed to prevent that.  It's why police who ignore warrants result in criminals walking free.

402 Bevel, you wrote this, doubling down on your lack of understanding of the case: "This situation is no different. The government shouldn't have been investigating who made the video. Itwas 100% legal " But this is what happened, and it isn't the only source for this. However, it's concise and easy to find so I'll use it. >>>Nakoula has been identified as a key figure behind Innocence of Muslims, an anti-Islamic video posted on YouTube that disparages Islam's prophet Muhammad, and that has been blamed for sparking demonstrations and riots in the Middle East, North Africa,[1] and other countries. After protests against Innocence of Muslims began on September 11, 2012, a man who identified himself as "Sam Bacile", the YouTube poster of the videos, called the Associated Press and the Wall Street Journal.[15] He said he had produced a movie with the title, Innocence of Muslims that the YouTube videos were promoting, and falsely claimed that the movie had been funded by $5 million collected from 100 Jewish donors, and that he was an Israeli-Jew.[15][27] By September 13, 2012, Nakoula had been linked to the movie and the persona Sam Bacile, by the Associated Press and U.S. federal authorities.[1] The Associated Press reported that the cellphone number that "Bacile" used for an interview matched Nakoula's address,[30][31][32] and among Nakoula's 13 previously known aliases were names which were similar to Sam Bacile.[17][4] Nakoula denied being Bacile,[30][31][32] but federal law enforcement officials identified Nakoula as the key filmmaker Nakoula brought this on himself. He called the friggin' media. His parole conditions -- because he is a convicted felon -- did not allow him to use an alias in business dealings, or even use the Internet without his parole officer's permission. Nor have bank accounts the parole officer doesn't know about. And he's calling the media and telling them about 5-million dollars raised from Jews (or whomever) using his own phone, which the media got on call display? Dude. He brought his arrest on himself. You're completely wrong on this. Just move forward.

They hoped this would be pushed onto the back burner until after the election of King Putz.
They hoped the election matters would trump the silly news.

458

We really need a timeline as to who did what when, but the main point is obvious and indisputable (unless you want to count the people who will defend the undefendable) - the WH, directly and through surrogates, lied about the nature of the attack at Benghazi for weeks, and stonewalled the FBI's attempt to investigate the case, either by not providing security for them or by simply not granted them access, for even longer.

Even *I* knew it was a terrorist attack, within a day or two, and I'm nobody. The intelligence services were doing their job, and it was through other politicians who were also briefed that the news came out. Obviously the President knew the truth, but was saying something else for an absurdly long time.

The timeline can tell more exactly what the situation was when Obama left for Vegas, but the essential facts are already well established.  Beyond that, all that's left is proving how political magical thinking was behind the lack of security, and who was ultimately behind that decision.

It's not inconceivable that someone in the FBI or other agency was concerned for his safety, and decided to act pronto and/or they thought he was concerned about his security and might flee before he could be arrested. I reiterate that I think you're probably right and it was very heavy-handed. But the actual decision by prosecutors to go after him for a parole violation was proper, I think. Suppose a guy named 'Random' makes a post on a blog critical of the president.  The president happens to read it and gets pissed off.

Is it right or proper for the President to launch an investigation of Random?

Suppose other people read Random's post, and there is a national story, and Random calls the AP under his pseudonym.  Does that suddenly mean the President can investigate Random to find out who he really is?  If they find he has an unpaid parking ticket or tax problems, is it proper to go after him?

The Brits warned us.

They warned us two weeks before 9/11/12...that something was going on, and that they were getting their people out.

They closed down their consulate...and left.

I suspect that this is where Carney and the WH is trying to go...in claiming that our Ambassador and the the 3 others "gave their lives willingly".

Which is outrageous.

Our people were begging for help.

It's not like they were staying there...to 'give their lives willingly'.

562 I'll add one more comment to clarify my position on Nakoula Basseley Nakoula. It was absolutely wrong how the President and Secretary of State used his video to coverup their ineptitude regarding the security of their ambassador and his mission in Benghazi. It was beyond disgusting. It's reprehensible in the extreme. They painted a target on Nakoula's back and should not have done so. As far as I'm concerned, the US owes him protection. At the same time, his identity was outed primarily because he called the media from his own phone alleging he'd raised a bunch of money for the video. He violated his parole in several ways, not just the money and the alias. So I don't blame prosecutors for his arrest and re-imprisonment. They did their job. I'm not going to tar them because the President and Sec State are dishonest assholes willing to play with people's lives and get them killed to serve their own personal agendas.

Excellent summation.

The coverup won't get any play because Nakoula did break the law.

The prosecutors did their jobs, but the late night arrest and sheer political expediency displayed is terrifying.

When was that last time anyone was arrested for a nonviolent parole violation in the middle of the night?    That is a show up at the hearing next week and we'll see if you're going back to jail offense.  And the answer is usually no.

I can only imagine the administration was thrilled to have an reason for the arrest, and the prosecutors were annoyed, because now they have to keep this guy alive in holding.

Posted by: Random at October 10, 2012 11:05 AM (u8eBQ)

604 This is nothing but political on the part of the Administration.
The entire point of blaming the YouTube video is to tie it into the remarks made by Republican Mitt Romney in regard to the Cairo protests that the MSM jumped all over him.

It is now clear that neither of these protests were about the YouTube video (except perhaps at the suggestion of the Obama Administration).

Muhammed Al Zawahiri (brother of Ayman Al Zawahiri) called for the Cairo protests to get the release of Omar Abdel-Rahman, the Blind sheik, on 9-11 (as shown in this video which show a CNN report from 9/9 that CNN hasn't shown except to it's affiliates).
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M86ndC4V7EQ

Why the American embassy decided to blame it on the YouTube video is anybody's guess, but it was the embassy's remarks in regard to the video that spurred Mitt Romney biting comments, which seem to have prompted the Administration to make the linkage to the video for both embassies.

In reality, here we have:
1) Huge lack of security except for locals on a food stipend
2) Requested security denied repeatedly by someone in State Dept
3) Four people dead due to incompetence
4) Four people dead due to incompetence on 9/11/12
5) Republicans are much smarter than Dems when they have to speak
6) Obama and Hillary lied, people died
7) Susan Rice lied
It took over 3 weeks for the truth to start leaking out
9) The State Dept only started cooperating last night with Rep. Issa
10) The lies continue with Ambassador Kennedy continuing, today, under oath, that there were protests over the video
11) Lt. Col Wood is a national hero
12) The reason for the lies were to protect an incumbent president vs the truth to the American people of a terrorist attack on 9/11/12.
13) We have to win on 11/6/12 and throw these thugs out of office

643 Lamb just said it wasn't a lack of money, point blank. So that defense is inoperative, unless the administration wants to contradict her.

644 'Unprecedented attack" oh my how could we have known and what were we supposed to do. We had our plan in place and it is not our fault that the situation didn't conflate with that. It's the terrorists' fault for not fitting their attack to our plan.

Unprecedented? Seriously? On the Anniversary of 911, after the British consulate left two weeks before because of the threat and after the Ambassador himself said he was afraid of an attack? Seriously?

I think that's why Issa publicly said something to the effect of,  "Come to this committee if anything happens."

Posted by: Tami at October 10, 2012 12:15 PM (X6akg)

672 This is basically a civilian mutiny.  A critical mass of bureaucrats decided since this administration won't protect us, we won't back up their lies. Remember that Stevens was not a political appointee.  He was career State Department.  He knew Libya, had been stationed there for years, had asked for more security and had the requests denied by the political/academic types pukes who thought they knew better.  That makes it a personal concern not just for every State department employee and their families but for employees of every other agency that sends people overseas.

676 >>> nordstrom felt the heat comin n flipped. i think this was pointed out earlier. You saw that too, eh? I thought that was what he did. Issa must have saw it too, what with that big speech at the end that the committee will protect them if anyone brings pressure to bear on them. I think Issa knows nordstrom is the weak link, susceptible to pressure from the administration.

Nordstrom may be simply trying to step out of the bus lane but his comments re: "..respond to the aftermath" and ".. how thin does the ice have to get..." should be repeated over and over by any American serving overseas.

678 Blind, incompetent stupidity from the Shoeshine Boy-in-Chief. Lies. Fraud. Betrayal. Subversion. Ruin. Death. War. Obama's stock in trade. So the jerk mobilizes his shameless media meat-loafs and dispatches his legions of credulous leftard phonies to mislead and distract the American people on every issue vital to their country, a month before the national election.

Bill "the Zipper" Clinton's excuse: "Nobody could have done it better!" How would Lord Lewinsky know? But we've seen Democrats in action!  That's why we call these ludicrous sociopaths "the Rat Party." How soon before it dawns on them that bin Laden is not dead? He's sitting in the Oval Office, taking orders from Big Bird.

679 That Tootsie Lamb woman had to be forced by Rep Adams to utter the words "Al Qaeda" as the terrorist group to be concerned with on 9/11. Despicable, this administration and State Dept.

I am very impressed with Congressman Issa and the other Republicans.

Here is the bus list, so far:
Rice
Lamb and her two superiors that she uttered between gritted teeth
Kennedy

Bill will protect Hillary. He is her insurance. But she should be held accountable as should Barry O the Sunshine Man.
