According to some leaked stuff I read, that may or may not be accurate, Prometheus is about the beings behind the alien xenomorphs from the previous movies.  They are described as biological weapons created to "cleanse" a planet before the creator beings, known as Engineers from the leaked materials, step in and terraform it to their purposes.

The leaked script (if accurate) describes some other things that seem to match the snippets from the trailer.  If it is indeed the real thing, then there's a little more content the trailer ISN'T showing that will make me glad to pay $12 for a ticket.

The ship they found in ALIEN was a warship whose weapon containment went haywire.

No.  It was just inconsistent and made no sense.  It would not have been fixed by adding any scenes.

The same problems occurs in The Thing (the way the Thing reacts changes through the movie, mostly because of poor and lazy writers).  You get the same idiocy in Terminator (where the first couple of times Arnie is shot he goes down and takes a minute to get himself together and get back up - then, later in the movie they just dispense with that (too boring to show on scren every time) and just have Arnie keep going while getting shot worse than the ones that put him out for a minute before.

Lots of movies do this, because there are so many mediocre writers around who can't be bothered to take the real effort necessary to make a consistent story.

The fact is that the writers would change the alien on a whim (in any way they wanted) and figured that movie-goers would be caught up in the action and forget about the inconsistencies.

This does look really interesting. That makes two movies with Charlize Theron I'm looking forward to seeing now. The other is Snow White and the Huntsman where it looks like they are making the actual fairy tale which is really really dark.   The trailer for it looks very creepy and awesome.

On the Ghost Protocol thing, it was so great because a.  Brad Bird and b.  it set out to be the very best popcorn muncher summer movie it could.  It wasn't trying to make any type of grand statement other than holy fuck that building is tall.  Bird focused on making a fun movie and guess what?  It was a fun movie.

I honestly don't get the Whedon-love.  No wait, it more like The Cult of Whedon.  I could have cared less that Firefly got cancelled, never really got into it when it first ran.  Then I re-watched it from all the cajoling from friends who said, "the writing and characters are SO AWESOME!!!!".  Nope.  Still didn't get it.  There's an awful lot of Whedon dick-sucking out there and I don't see why.  I'll watch Avengers sure, but it won't make me change my mind about him.

He gets shot, run over, beat, bombed, burned ... all through the movie, but never gets "knocked out" as he did in the first scenes in the club when he went down and gave the two a chance to get away the first time.

Also, Arnie can barely speak English as the Terminator, but he can mimic exactly anyone else's voice and accent in a second (the cop and the mother).  It just doesn't make any sense, at all.  And it was unnecessary, as Arnie didn't need to do the two voice mimic scenes.  Those scenes contributed nothing to the plot but added a glaring problem.

Don't blame me for that.  I didn't write.

75 The first Alien was somewhat deliberately inconsistent--especially in the appearance of the Alien--to keep the viewer discombobulated. It was supposed to have a nightmarish quality.


One can *prefer* "logical consistency" in films, but that doesn't mean the only way to measure a film is by that single aesthetic. In a puzzle movie in which the viewer is trying to figure something out, for example, that would make more sense than one in which the goal is suspense and horror.

As I recall, however, the movie was pretty faithful to the acid blood stipulation (even though the Alien did change a lot as it developed, going through metamorphic stages). I don't recall its being cut in the first film after it reached maturity.

I love the first two Alien movies, even Aliens III is tolerable-if you like being depressed, but the Alien as “Bio-Weapon” is absurd.  The Alien is like a Zombie, itÂ’s not a tool-user.  Tool-users donÂ’t lose to NON-tool-users.  The Alien was problematic in the first one, because the hyper drive circuitry was in the hull of the Nostromo, and if the Alien “bled” thru that, they didnÂ’t get home.  In Aliens, the nest was near the cooling system of the reactors, limiting the firepower that could be applied.  In anything but those constrained circumstances, the Alien loses to a technologically advanced foes, one with gun powder.

Oh yeah.....I forgot about the androids being in the mix. ....This could be good. Even better than any of the other movies done so far, with this 'Alien' storyline.

 

Looking forward to it even more now, than I already was.

If Scott is even halfway smart (which he is), he'll make use of the analogy between the androids and the xenomorphs.

In other words humans are to androids as space jockeys are to xenomorphs. We created them, and they may be better than us.

Expect a conflict of loyalties on that basis.

I'm looking forward to this movie.

99 I love the first two Alien movies, even Aliens III is tolerable-if you like being depressed, but the Alien as “Bio-Weapon” is absurd. The Alien is like a Zombie, itÂ’s not a tool-user. Tool-users donÂ’t lose to NON-tool-users.

Yeah, I read that.  Seems to me there are some inconsistencies between that script and this trailer.  Obviously, the Prometheus lands on the planet just fine and goes about its mission.  That aside, everything else in the trailer seems to have a link to the leaked script.  Nothing else besides the landing confirms or disproves the script......so far.

What's your issue with John Connolly? The guy can write, creates well drawn and psychologically intriguing characters, and has tons of murderous badassery all through his books. It's not like I suggested James Patterson or some similarly unreadable hack, for fuck's sake.

117 My money is on it being a disappointment. Looks like minority report meets cider house rules landing on a bad remake of Aliens.  Oh well Rid Scott can take solace that even Matisse went back to a bad copy when he needed cash.

The second movie, Aliens, was just a variation on the first movie, with more Aliens, weapons, battles, and strategy. It was very popular. The third movie tried to imitate the first and failed. The fourth tried to somewhat imitate the second and also failed. The fact is that fans want to see Aliens, humans, and battles. They just want it to be contained in an interesting story. Maybe by focusing on the back story to Alien, Ridley Scott will succeed. But be assured, FANS WANT THIS MOVIE.
