— CAC Since I know you can't get enough of those sweet, sweet maps, and I feel like a giver today, here's this month's edition of the AOSHQ Presidential Projection.
Map courtesy (as always) of JohnE.
Since I have plans this evening, I will keep my comments brief. I used Mitt Romney as the Republican candidate as he looks likely to win the nomination. He was flying high before the ritual beating-about-each-others-testicles-until-sterile we call a primary. Not so much anymore. Behold, the last of this week's big maps (and yes, before the gnashing of teeth begins, it is a big map. So no whining. It's a special day today. Jerry Lewis turns 100):

Don't forget that the more people see of Obama, the less they like him. That'a a big change from 2008. He can't hide on vacation during the fall.

Shame really, as I think a blowout would have sent a nice message, but knocking the bum out will have to suffice, even if Mitt is less than a dimes worth of difference from Obama...

Alaska is our northernmost state, bordering Canada on the east, with Aleutian Islands extending to the international date line.

in a Crap Economy, this is especially true; ask Jimmy Carter

I recall a recent book which noted that, although both Virginia and South Carolina were founded by English aristocrats, they were different English aristocrats. South Carolina (and, thence, the Deep South) were founded by slavelords from Barbados and Jamaica. Virginia was more of a pre-Australia, collecting mainly (white) criminals at first.

After 2008, a lot of folks have buyer's remorse. If the Republican nominee runs a decent campaign I could see NV, COLO, NM, WI, MICH, PA and VA going red.
Heck, in March 1980 nobody figured Reagan would win in a landslide.

One of the sites which bought our product was a halfway house - criminals on probation would go there, learn to be productive members of society, etc, or so they told their probation officers. Anyway. It had a parking lot. On the other side was the brick wall of some other building. That wall had a massive mural devoted to Assata Shakur.
The unrepentant criminal, Assata Shakur. Google that if ya wanna.

The three synoptics vary slightly. The most extreme is: "If you would be perfect, sell everything and give the money to poor. Then come follow me."
Then I re-read the Gospel according to John. Sublime. None of the class-warfare. Otherworldly.
Democrats want you to give everything to the poor, without worshiping God, without living holy lives. (Understand that Sandra Fluke?)

I worked with liberals in Boulder last year. They don't lack empathy. And they certainly don't lack love. They also have families and are very good to those families. What they lack is experience dealing with the lower classes.
I'm not talking about race (for once), or education, or innate intelligence or whatever. I'm talking about living for many years in some place cheap. Some place where all around you is diversity. Some place where, sure, most people around are great people; but that there's the Element which will fuck up your life if you ever let down your ground.
I've been called "paranoid" and "obsessive" more than once for noticing this. But you deal with the neighbours you have, you deal with the human race as it is. And when you live in a low-income neighbourhood for very long, you learn VERY quickly that distrust of people will save your life.
That's why that atheist Thomas Hobbes became the authoritarian he became, because he saw the same shit in England when the law broke down.
Re, Boulder: "It's easy to be a saint in Paradise" -- Captain Benjamin Sisko. New Orleans isn't Paradise; Houston isn't Paradise. The Eloi living in Boulder need to understand that.

While I agree that having the Government Health Insurance Takeover Act would be a huge boon for business, I don't see any real turnaround until they see Obama on his way out. Should he be voted out of office, then we'll see things pick up.
Conversely, if he's reelected by some horror... the bottom is gonna drop out. We're bouncing along the bottom of the barrel right now, waiting for the verdict, how things will go.

150 PG County, MD is interesting
Most of the DC suburbs have had a good government tradition for the last fifty years. It veers into nanny state territory in Montgomery County, but in both Virginia and Maryland the suburbs are pretty well governed. Taxes are high but services are good, and politicians rarely wind up in jail.
Prince Georges County has a culture of corruption going back fifty years or more. It went from being badly governed by white southern Democrats in the fifties and sixties, to being badly governed by liberal black Democrats for the last twenty years. There are very poor neighborhoods close to DC, and very wealthy, predominantly black neighborhoods; but the schools and services in both areas are awful. The outgoing county executive and his wife went to jail this winter on influence peddling charges. His wife was hiding $100K in her bra when the FBI busted down the door. There's a PhD thesis waiting to be written on why PG government has been so bad for so long.

Odd that the MSM never asks that question. If it's romney he's probably promised that t paw guy, and the Governor of Puerto Rico, and Bob McDonald from Virginia. He seems like the type to give you a wink wink and in the end it will be suzannah martinez.
rush today said that Florida and Virginia and North Carolina are the states that will matter. "Theory: Election Hinges on North Carolina" http://tinyurl.com/7c5suma It's long but interesting.
If Gingrich gets the nomination, owing to the states that will truly matter, I think he will pick Rick Perry or Fred Thompson. Yeah, I know two southerners but hey the election appears to hinge on Southern states so why not southerners?
Santorum has been so tight lipped about VP, does anyone have a clue?

The big problem is that the Republicans have to be perfect to win an electoral victory nowadays. Way too many big states out of play.
The GOP needs to look back at the Reagan coalition. Reagan was able to win over economic conservatives, social conservatives, and WORKING CLASS DEMOCRATS.
Clinton was smart enough to win back the Reagan Democrats by branding himself as a New Democrat who was pro-business but who cared about people who "worked hard and played by the rules."
The GOP needs a movement of New Republicans who will fight for the values of the middle / working class and will not stand for and support the expansion of gigantic, life-sucking bureaucracies at every level of government.
The fact that we're about to nominate a guy who was the creator of OBamacare, a supporter of TARP, and amazingly, is STILL a believer in NCLB, is mind-boggling.
How in the hell can the Republican party reform itself if a guy like Romney wins?
Posted by: stickety at March 17, 2012 12:14 PM (+Vm+w)
Not that Republicn candidates have helped, but...
When most conservatives are attacking each and every one of the candidates - and one another - for 'non-compliance' to ideological 'purity'...
...and attacking the 40% of the population who describe themselves as Independents... For being 'wishy-washy' when they're really, seriously, sick and tired of the lies and the vitriol...
...and attacking that eight to twenty percent of Libertarians vote for Paul... You're not doing much to 'sell' yourselves to the public.
iow, When you're alienating as much as 60% of your potential voter base, depending on state and region...is it any wonder that you keep losing the policy debates... or is it really any suprise when you only win the big campaigns when the other side totally fucks it all up?
Time to smell the coffee...buy a vowel...something...
