— Ace Via Hot Air, the Shark Tank reported the statement.
“I actually think we’re going to have a very good nominee. I think Mitt Romney’s going to be the next president of the United States. And by their own admission, the folks running against Mitt Romney have admitted that they cannot win the primary, that the only way they can win is a floor fight at the convention, which I think would set us back in terms of our goal of replacing Barack Obama.“So I do believe it’s time now to concede that Mitt Romney has won the Republican nomination, that he’s going to be the Republican nominee, and that if we all get behind him he will be the next president of the United States.”
The way he phrased it, it's not necessarily an instruction to Gingrich or Santorum. It seems like more, "We should all concede this."
For what it's worth, I don't think politicians should say this. It's counterproductive. Every statement like this makes people want to dig in their heels more.
People should just be permitted to come to terms with this on their own schedule.
It's one thing to think you lost a big game. If you think you were outplayed, you accept it.
If you decide that the refs took the game from you, now you have a grievance, and a sense of unfairness, and an anger towards The Whole Corrupt System.
Romney supporters should be very wary of giving anti-Romney Republicans that sense of grievance.
"We lost" is one thing; "We wuz robbed!" is another. And the whole Narrative among some conservatives (yes, conservatives have Narratives too) is that a hostile and corrupt power structure has denied them a great true-blue conservative candidate who'd have an advantage in a general election, which turns out to be, improbably, either Santorum or Gingrich.
Anyone believing "We wuz robbed! It's a rigged game!" by November will probably just stay home and not vote (and usher Obama into an End of America presidential term), so it is imperative to not do anything to provoke feelings of disenfranchisement.
Those feelings are already there. No point throwing gas on that particular fire.
I believe Romney is indeed inevitable. So let him be inevitable. Let the inevitability take care of itself.
Rather than make the case for Romney in this way, why not make the affirmative case for him?
He actually does have some good things going for him.
My own experience with coming over to Romney's side is this: Once you get past hating his guts, you kind of... like him.
Is he a great candidate? No, but he's quite good. Look at him again, just on a superficial basis: What's here that you wouldn't want in a candidate?
Is he ultra-conservative? No, but I do believe he is conservative. And while people largely ignore this, he has endorsed the Ryan Budget. Democrats are currently trying to make that a central issue in this campaign, Romney's "extremism" in embracing this budget.
And yet embrace it he did.
I'm not going to nominate him for a Medal of Honor, but it's a positive sign, surely.
But people need the space and time to discover that for themselves. Pushing them towards that conclusion only encourages further resistance.
No one, especially those who wave a Gadsden Flag, wants to be pushed towards something.
I always say this: It's a standard principle of persuading someone, or, frankly, of conning them, to let the target (or, um, "mark") come to the conclusion himself.
That way, he has ownership of it. It wasn't forced upon him. He put together the bits of data and made a conclusion himself.
Now I'm talking about conning people, and that's not really a good thing to be discussing here, but the fact is, con artists employ this principle because they know it's how people actually think.
People are rankled that Romney is likely to win. They're comparing him, I believe, not to Santorum and Gingrich, but to hypothetical candidates they would really prefer, for whom Santorum and Gingrich are substitute place-holders only for basis of comparison.
And when you compare Romney to Your Absolute Favorite Choice, hey, he kind of sucks.
But that'll be ending soon, because the calender compels it. The real choice will soon (probably) be between Mitt Romney and Barack Hussein Obama.
I think that's a pretty easy and painless call. I am not worried that my judgement on that will be rejected by a significant number of conservative voters.
Let people get there on their own. Most will get there.

I have been saying this for month. Instead of simply saying Romney is inevitable or only Romney can beat Obama, why don't Romney supporters actually make the case for him. And while it is good to show a candidate's flaws, that should never be your only strategy. At some point you have to give a positive reason to vote for someone. We will not beat Obama simply because we hate Obama. That is not enough. It is a strong start, and is really the only thing that gets you in the race at the start. But to cross the finish line, you need a positive message of this is why you should vote for me. I have yet to hear that positive message from Romney or his supporters. Even once he officially becomes the nomineed, he shouldn't assume he will win all conservatiev voters. He won't unless he gives us a positive reason to vote for him. I have begged his supporters to make the conservative case for him. Sure you can make a moderate case for him, but I - and many of us on this board and many more in the base - are not "moderates." We are conservatives.
In fairness, he appears to be getting better. That may simply be because there are no debates - a setting in which I never thought he shined. I will not vote for him in the primary whether he is inevitable or not. If my vote is a protest vote, then that is what it is. I'm protesting that he is the nominee. I may vote for him in the general. But I refuse to simply give him my vote because he is not Obama. Romney should earn my vote like any other. Now he may make the sale, he may not. If he doesn't, sure I'll probably vote for him. But stop telling me its time to unite around him. I don't want to unite around him just yet, because he has not sold me as a candidate worth uniting around.
Mitt - actually convince me that you will expend all your political capital repealing Obamacare. Convince me that you will nominate justices in the likes of Scalia and Thomas. Convince me that you will reform entitlements, that they are a system that desperately need strategic reforms. Convince me that you have a core set of principles that you will draw from when the going gets tough. Do that, and I'll get on board and say its time to unite around you.
But until then, fight on. If Mitt can't convince people that he is more worthy than Santorum, I'm not sure how he will do against Obama. And if Newt and Santorum cause Mitt to come a little more to the right so be it. The one thing I am convinced of is that Mitt needs more vetting. He is not as polished as he will need to be. I'm not sure if he will ever get there, but more trial by fire is needed.

Indeed. Don't get pissed when Romney comes across as moderate on Obama hatred.
You can't expect our candidate to sound like someone who comments here and win.
He's going to have to appeal to people who voted for Obama in 2008 but are looking for a legitimate and reasonable alternative in 2012. I'm talking about the people living in the cities, exurbs and close suburbs.
We've already got the rural areas.
It's the wishy washy, on the fence types. Obama won by 10 million votes last time. That means Romney needs to convince at least 5.1 million of them to come back to the Republican party. Mainly in states like Ohio, Pennysylvania, Wisconsin, Virginia, New Hampshire and other states where the Republican party isn't exactly Ace of Spades-type Conservative.

[1.] ten thousand damn worthless debates hosted by the MFM.
[2.] primary order where the blue States determine our nominee
I assume that Vic means by "robbery" that the game was rigged in Romney's favour. It can't be that the game was rigged in Obama's favour because that election hasn't happened yet.
Against [1.]: the debates were bad, but some of them hurt Romney as well. Remember him crying for Anderson Cooper to bail him out of the pummeling Perry was laying down?
Against [2.]: If the red states had voted first, we'd be looking at Perry splitting the vote with Santorum and maybe even Cain. Romney would be a workhorse gathering a consistent level of delegates per race. And then would come the blue states and then Romney would pound the others. A brokered convention becomes more likely. But anyway the whole thing is in "what-if" territory. The order of states just doesn't have enough evidence to suggest a [deliberate] "robbery", IMO.
So, the first argument collapses and the second argument is highly debatable.

Fwiw, I was making this same point during the Herman Cain collapse and was more then a few times pestered for being a delusional Cain supporter by Ace. Maybe I didn't make my angle clear enough the time.
Then as now, the situation is:
*Yes its costing money for a lost cause
*yes its builds increased tension among the party
*yes its something that must be allowed to play out to not disenfranchise those large swaths of the GOP who were never going to feel real connected to Romney.
To me way back during the Cain - Perry collapses a Romney and a borderline disenfranchised base was pretty much the expected outcome and biggest obstacle to removing Obama. We all got to pick someone else and have our time in the sun and for the most part our Ideas got Camera time. Like I mentioned yesterday the literally hundreds of people Romney will bring in with him and I can content myself with that.
Future looks brighter then it did. Even much Obamas base increasingly approaches his claims skeptically. Even Mitch McConnel for the first time since he was 12 reached into his pants and found a pair.
There seems to be more then a few Big dinosaur types that have abandoned Obama. Those few hundred "Immelt" types punch wayyy above their weight and don't bother with schoolyard bluff. Also they leave a trail of corpsemen. ok ill stop

I wanted Perry....so secret there.
But something that will make it a lot easier to vote for Romney, would be to see him start hitting Barky as hard as he has been hitting the other candidates. ....It would show me that he's a fighter....against the real enemy. The enemy of our freedom. ....Instead of simply taking shots at people on his own side.
Romney has started making a few 'soft' blows, in his mild-mannered way. ....But I want to see some body blows. ....Some hits so hard that Debbie WhatsernameShitz starts bleeding out of her eyes.

The guy has been running for at least six years now and can't seal the deal with Republicans, who are inclined to actually consider his business experience and religious based morals as positives. But nobody, repeat nobody believes he actually HAS positions to be accused later of changing. The whole Occupy movement was created from scratch specifically in the belief Romney, The Poster Child of the 1%, would be the opponent in the general. (And if we aren't stupid enough... the stupid party... they will help nominate him for us.)
Now imagine how every television outlet is hard at work on a series of Mormon bashing 'news' stories for airing as soon as Romney really has this thing sewed up to the point we can't get out of the deal; we will be ready to vomit by election day at the levels of religious intolerance being spewed daily. We will get a steady rotation of Mormons and bigamy/child rape, crazy Mormons and their magic underwear, Other Crazy Stuff Mormons believe, Why Mormons eat puppies for breakfast, and so on. While of course Rev. Wright will remain strictly off limits and anyone breaking that rule gets branded a racist and driven from polite society.
Meanwhile, Romney will (because it is what RINOs do..) will be abandoning conservative positions daily from the nomination to the election, throwing conservatives under the bus every time we try to launch the attacks on Obama he refuses to do, etc. In short he will be trying his damndest to force as many of our team to stay home as he possibly can, in the great tradition of McCain, Dole, Bush (the elder) and so on.
This is going to get ugly. By election day our team will be even more demoralized than we were in late 2008. We will have debased ourselves trying to drag this loser, that so many of us rightly predicted is a loser, across the finish line... but we will brainwash ourselves into believing because we MUST STOP OBAMA. Only to watch Obama get sworn in for round two, this time with feeling! Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.
Anybody wants me to join Team Romney had better first be able to show me a flaw in that reasoning.

Romney was never my favorite, but I can live with him.
We can't let the desire for the perfect destroy the possibility of the good (or in this case, just the possibility of the better)
I wanted to like Santorum as he seems to be the most conservative, but he is also the least clever. He takes everything at face value and does not understand how to finesse or even just ignore the small stuff.
Gingrich is actually my favorite because he has all the cleverness and genius that Santorum is missing but he is a victim of his own intellect, open-mindedness and need to explore and experiment. I kind of get where a lot of his gaffes (Pelosi on the couch, etc) come from because I can see myself possibly doing similar things in his situation - as much for the experience and the experiment to see what would happen more than a real ideological flip flop.
But the stalwart, incorruptable image that Santorum projects (for better or worse) is something that Gingrich simply can never muster. There is something deep within the American psyche - probably latent echoes of the Enlightenment - that puts extreme intellect and extreme moral uprightness at odds. It's not that very smart people can't be good - it's that they can't be VERY good - and very good people can't be seen as very smart.
I think this (is one thing that) separates the right from the left - the left EXPECTS the smartest to be the most moral and they often conflate the two both in their appearance and absence - the important people on the Right are always evil and stupid (although not always on the same day) where as their people are always incredibly brilliant AND morally pure.
When you see them trying to reshape the narrative, it's often because this canon has been violated in some way - Bill Clinton had to be absolved of his sins and Sarah Palin has to be made stupid.
So I'm OK with Romney - let's get on with setting things right.

So at long last, we now come to that point in time where the indecisive and the irresolute, the independent minded menu using non-buffet feeders and admirers of your work may once again hold our heads up and bring the election home, I presume. Way number 2 not to convince the doubters. "Vote for my guy or your voting for Obama!" is what they hear. And they know it's crap- a vote not cast is... a vote not cast. It doesn't factor in on either candidate's side. And they know that.
If Mittens and his supporters want the rest of the GOP to support him, they're going to have to stop with that crap line and accept the fact we have some serious doubts- and then go about attempting to assuage them.
Directly comment on his liberal record on judges- and not with "well he was in MA, what did you want him to do?" Directly comment on RomneyCare- same rule. This is not an exhaustive list, by the way.

What we "need" is to make the primary voting order by percent vote for the last Republican candidate. And, we need to replace the old Rockefeller wing of the Party with conservatives.
WHEN Mutt gets the nod we will see after the convention how it is going. I have never thought that he was "magically" the best one to beat Vomit. The States he is strong in the primaries in are ones in which it is doubtful a Republican will win anyway. The States that normally vote Republican he is weak in.
And once he does get the nod if he loses to Vomit it will destroy the Republican Party. The Party can not survive two 2008's in a row.

No. Still not a "vote for Obama."
See, a "vote for Obama" would look like this, using your numbers:
Obama 49 votes, Romney 51 votes = Romney 51%
Obama 50 votes, Romney 50 votes = Tie
Now, to show me not voting:
Obama 49 votes, Romney 51 votes = Romney 51%
Obama 49 votes, Romney 50 votes = Romney ~50.5%
See how those are different? So maybe instead of blaming those who are still uncomfortable with Romney, Romney and his staff should be blamed for not trying to make them more comfortable.
His entire campaign has been to make him the "least objectionable." But least objectionable to whom? To the people who don't pay attention until the last minute, and who would vote for Obama again. Why didn't he care to try to make actual conservatives comfortable?
One logical (not the only, but one of them) is that he isn't conservative. If that's the case, I don't think he gets to count on my vote. And, no, I won't accept your emotional blackmail over the fact that he failed to address my concerns in any substantive way.

A quadruple shot of whisky before hitting the polls helps. If it wasn't for the option of voting drunk, McCain would've got beaten by an even wider margin.
Pro tip- the little booths you see people standing in at the polling station are NOT urinals.

Here's my problem. He still thinks government, somehow, is the solution to the health-care "problem". It's not - except to the extent that the solution is LESS government (it's over-involved now).
As long as he thinks more government involvement (and he accepts the fact that a mandate is wrong for any unit of government), I can't really accept that he is a principled conservative.
A conservative-for-convenience, maybe. But not in principle.

But you think it was "offered up" by "The Republican Party"?

I think it'll take a lot of heavy lifting to get it through reconciliation. I think it'll take a lot of heavy lifting when Democrats start showing up with sick people and little kids who won't have coverage because pre-existing conditions won't be covered anymore.
As you point out, people like the bits and pieces of ObamaCare but not the whole package. The political focus of repeal will be on those bits and pieces, not the whole package.
So yeah, it will take a lot of heavy lifting to take away "free stuff" from people.

If I might add, even if Obama is a so called "fuckin marxist traitor," the day after Obama is out of the White house (assuming no type of race or anti-religious riots break out) we will still have to face the half+ of congress, majority of judges, enviromental-racial-union etc.. special intersets, open borders to the polito-religious-socialists from third world south america, leftist news and entertainment media, public indoctro-education, radical academics, useful idiot leftist religonists, half of Fox news, and etc... to contend with. And contrast that with Newt, who attacked Ryan and gave Obama ammo.

Ace (233) - I am not saying that Mitt is not deserving. I am simply saying that he shouldn't expect us to simply fall in line. I would be happy if Newt or Santorum were winning, but only because I support them over Mitt. And if they were winning I hope I would be making the case for why they are a better candidate than Mitt with an argument that is more than inevitability - or being the most electable. I have been trying to do that for months here. What I ask of Mitt supporters is they make the same argument to me. I cannot deny that Mitt is likely going to cruise to the nomination at this point. And I will not whine that he only won because he outspent his rivals. That's part of the game. I do not believe there to be an establishment conspiracy. Mitt is winning, and he is winning fairly. We can all agree that he is not really winning that strongly - particularly when the competition is Rick and Newt. My proposal is this - continue to make the case for why you are deserving.
With respect to the general, I stand by my proposition that you don't win the Presidency by simply not being the incumbent. Bush was beatable. But the democrats nominated someone few wanted to vote for, except their own base. Still it was almost enough. A Bill Clinton type could have won.
Mitt will have to start making the case for himself, so might as well start now. I don't care if he is inevitable. I want to know why I should vote for him. You can vote for him for whatever reason you want. But a lot of us want a reason to vote for him.

Wow. So Mittens makes multiple conservatives nervous- and it's our fault? WTF? Maybe, just maybe, the problem is with Romney?
Now- I'm on the record as saying this, and I won't go against it- no way on God's green earth does Romney get my vote- not in the Primary, probably not in the General. I live in Texas, and if he needs my vote to win Texas, we're already so screwed that we may as well just say "screw it" and start the shooting war now.
That said- We're still the ones hiring him. Yes, it's his job to make us comfortable. I'm not even asking for a complete walk-back, but at least an acknowledgement that his past choices were not strictly Conservative, and explanation of why (and if it's mamby-pamby "I was in MA" it doesn't count), and a good, principled reason why I should believe he won't repeat those mistakes at the national level.
Because if he has a justice appointment record at the national level like he did in MA, then we get (at best) another Kennedy and a Souter. Which doesn't actually help.

After all, much of the complaint against Romney has been-- he doesn't stand for anything, he just wants to POTUS to be POTUS, he's going to move left for the general election, he'll pander to moderates/ indies/ Dems instead of conservatives, he's a progressive who will do nothing to attend to or remedy the most urgent fiscal situation facing our nation.
And yet-- he's standing shoulder to shoulder with Ryan, arguably the Republican who's been most demonized by the Dems during Obama's presidency, painted as "right-wing radical" and politically toxic (because he's the most dangerous-- most serious, articulate, and potentially persuasive). IMO Ryan right now is the politician with most integrity, substance, and actual concern for our country (transcending any partisan political calculation) out there. It is politically risky to ally yourself with him. And yet, Romney has done so. That tells me: (1) Romney's not a politician who's just calculating shallow political advantage, e.g. trying to "pander" to the center/ left; and (2) Romney actually has substantive and serious fiscal concerns, a substantive and serious fiscal diagnosis and prescription for what ails this country, along the lines of Ryan's plan. He's not just whistling past the graveyard.
Let us recall that Ryan (portrayed by the liberal as MSM as a "radical" granny-killer) has been considered so politically toxic, so scary to the political center, that Newt-- considered by many a "true conservative" compared to Romney-- infamously pandered to Meet the Press audience by calling his plan "right-wing social engineering". Newt distanced himself from Ryan. Romney is totally embracing him-- and not in the thick of the primaries (when he might have needed to "pander" to conservatives), but on the brink-- or now, already, the start-- of the general election. Whatever case Romney will make to the general electorate, we can be sure it will be one that incorporates Ryan's concerns and Ryan's vision. Not one that distances itself from them.
That's an excellent sign.

@317 - Should we have no fear that if Romney wins, it is likely that Obamcare stays on the books, a liberal like Souter gets appointed to replace Scalia and Kennedy, and taxes go up in a deal that mildly cuts spending. Where the tea party movement stops in its tracks because you have to go with the team, and the President is usually the coach. Do you not fear that at all? I do. Because nothing in Mitt's past convinces me that that is not a plausible choice.
What is worse? The foregoing or a President Obama who is hamstrung by a GOP run house and Senate?
I would say you probably roll the dice and always go for the win. But is it not a legitimate fear to have with Romney?

Now I set that to the side, climb on board like a good soldier and re-calibrate myself towards accomplishing the larger mission, which is to defeat our first Anti-American president.

My only concern with religion is that the candidate not be a member of a religion that flies fucking jets into our buildings and blows themselves up in the name of their god. I reject all other religious tests.

For what it's worth, I'm registered Republican only because they seemed to be slightly more likely to offer a conservative alternative in the primaries, and my state has closed primaries. I am, and have always been, a classical liberal, and voted for Goldwater in my first presidential election.

"I would say you probably roll the dice and always go for the win. But is it not a legitimate fear to have with Romney?"
Actually, no. Romney has publicly committed himself to the repeal of ObamaCare by issuing waivers to all the 57 States on his first day in office, then pushing for repeal through Congress.
Another factor is that Mittens is political Silly Putty. He will bend to the will of those who put the most pressure on him, and it damn sure ain't gonna be libs that do that. The Tea Party, which stands to gain more seats in Congress and will probably take the Senate too, will be so far up Mitt's ass he won't need to ever see a proctologist. He won't be able to look in a mirror without seeing a Gadsen Flag in it.
This is important: everything the SCOAMF has done has to be undone. And all of us have a duty to make sure that gets done by pressuring these people we send to Washington to act on our behalf all the time, 24/7, 365.

What does giving a waiver to a state do anyway? Besides further the idea that we are a country not of laws but of waivers, what does it do. Does it mean that the individual mandate goes away? You kind of ignore the fact that Romney has "publicly committed himself" to a lot of things over the years that he then quite publicly un-committed himself to, hence the concern.
Also, you can't "repeal" a law by issuing waivers. Only some sections of the law are open to waivers and even then do you think NY, CA, IL, etc are going to ask for or accept them?
We're going to need to repeal all of it root and branch and contra Ace, it's going to be tough under the best of circumstances.

New delegate selection rules. Pick several or all of these ideas or add more in a similar vein.
IA and NH go after at least ten other states or they receive zero delegates. I.E. beauty contest only with no option of a do over later that actually awards the delegates. Where are the stone tablets that say they must always go first? Ds might be happy with it but we shouldn't.
Award 1 delegate per electoral vote. Award one more vote for each electoral vote that went to the R candidate in the last four cycles. This ends blue states that have no chance of actually voting for our team in the fall from having such an outsized influence on our nominee. Perhaps add in a special bonus for very close purple states to avoid overly penalizing them and/or give em a little boost if they are purple and went R anyway.
Arrange for some smallish red states to go first to ensure the first cull leaves some conservatives in the field but then some purple ones to stop a Bachman or Cain situation.

He'd probably like for Augusta's membership to be mostly women and minorities. I don't know much about the current president, Billy Payne but Hootie Johnson would likely have gone public and told Obama to fuck himself, quite possibly in those words.
Women are allowed to play at Augusta as guests, they just can't be members.

And another. The Republican Party will sponsor a series of officially sanctioned debates. They will be run with the single minded notion that every minute of them will advance the goal of assisting Republicans choose a nominee and anything that doesn't advance that goal will be eliminated. Republicans from across the spectrum of Republican thought will moderate and ask all questions. Only registered Republicans will be permitted in the audience. All candidates will be required to formally bind themselves as a caucus to support the eventual nominee to be allowed to participate. You can't convince people on the right to vote for Mitt. By now they've either they've bought into him, come to peace with the choices they have or they aren't going to do it.
There's nothing that Mitt can do or say at this point, he is who he is. There's no new information out there to be had. At least that's likely to make him more attractive to conservatives.
Personally, I think it depends on which state you live in. If you're a conservative stuck in NY or CA or some other deep blue state and you can't stand Mitt, there's no harm in not voting on that line or picking some 3rd party candidate that's not going anywhere.

I agree with your advice: that it behooves Romney supporters (or anyone who's already 100% aboard the ABO train) to show forbearance toward those who are still ABR. It's of the utmost importance for us to get Obama out, and for all of us (Republicans and conservatives and independents disenchanted with Obama) to unite. I always try show respect toward those I disagree with (with the exception of obvious trolls). I try to empathize with the diehard anti-Romneys. But I also understand those who become so frustrated with ABRs that they impatiently lash out-- I share some of that frustration, though I do not condone lashing out. Or crudely hitting back-- which is what it most often is: it's totally a two-way street; the ABR conservatives are hardly innocent victims in the vitriol wars, though they like to take the martyr role. Which makes it all the more exasperating. But maybe it's natural that there should be a higher bar re decorum for electoral winners than for electoral losers. But it takes restraint. (For the record, I strongly support and am rooting for Romney now-- I'm in general election mode-- but among the primary candidates he was my third choice.) Some reasons for the frustration:
1. Obamabot mobys. There's no question that there are already a number of mobys and concern trolls afoot (a number that will probably grow as the general election campaign progresses). Most mobys/ trolls are obvious and idiots. But many are not: and many effectively echo the rhetoric and memes of genuine conservative ABRs. So much so that, honestly, I often find it very difficult to tell them apart. (E.g., sometimes it seems to me like half of Hot Air commenters are mobys-- but that can't be right, can it??) There's a thin line (looking at it from the outside) between taking a principled conservative stand against Romney (for not being conservative enough by your standards) and using that same rhetoric and those same memes to depress conservative turnout in the general election, argue that there's no difference between Romney and Obama so might as well not vote in the general, let Obama win-- teach "them" a lesson. Down with establishment, death to the GOP, let it all burn in an Obama second term.
So the frustration-- the irritation, the exasperation-- among some "Mittbots" is twofold: at the Obamabot mobys exploiting conservative rhetoric to get Obama elected, and at the actual conservatives whose principlesÂ… or "purity" or zealotry or resentment or pride or whatever leads them to aid and abet, to legitimate and strengthen, those Obamabot mobys' aims. So those Romney supporters who lash out are not just lashing out at ABR conservatives, but at the multitude of mobys who parrot ABR conservative rhetoric, so much so that it blends together. And Mittbots are already in general election mode: so their anger at Obama (and hence Obamabot mobys) naturally falls upon some of the conservatives whose rhetoric is indistinguishable from Obamabot mobys.
I have no problem with those voting against Romney in the primaries for principled reasons. I respect them: a sterling example is someone like mama winger. But anyone advocating not voting for Romney in the general election? Argh this drives me up the wall, my blood pressure shoots up, in Santorum's words it makes me want to vomit. Yes, it angers me. It's your vote, but UGH. You're going to sit out (and advocate others sitting out) on Obama's-- OBAMA'S-- "final election," after which he will have "more flexibility" (as he said to Medvedev)? What??? Are you insane??? (I'm sorry, I know this doesn't help. But this is what I feel.)
By the way, this is why Santorum's Romney = Obama, "might as well vote for Obama" rhetoric is IMO extremely reprehensible. Conservatives hated McCain for saying "there's nothing to fear from an Obama presidency." Yet here's Santorum, true conservative, on the brink of the general election, making the case to the American people that Obama-- the most radical leftist SCOAMF POTUS *ever*-- is basically indistinguishable from a Romney-- who may be a "moderate" but is nevertheless ideologically a standard Republican (and someone with extensive private sector and executive experience, patriotic American, etc. etc.). Hey America, it's perfectly reasonable for you to think Romney and Obama are so similar, you might as well vote for Obama! IMO that's just as bad as "there's nothing to fear from an Obama presidency".
A related factor is the "Operation Hilarity" shenanigans-- the fact that you have Kos and Michael Moore et all getting liberal Dems to vote Santorum. It's totally unfair to blame genuine Santorum supporters for that, or conflate them (just as it would be totally unfair to conflate genuine good faith Santorum supporters or anti-Romney conservative commenters with someone like curious ozfic catpiss). But if/ when they say the same kinds of things, or seem to have the same goals, it's natural that anger toward the one (Operation Hilarity or trolls like curious) would sometimes indirectly fall upon the other (diehard Santorum supporters or ABR conservatives). I'm not condoning such a conflation: I'm saying such a conflation is *wrong*. I would never exploit the loathsomeness of catpiss to argue against Santorum or for Romney. But I'm just saying that plays a part, psychologically, in the exasperation many Romney supporters might feel.
Gotta go, #2 coming later. Maybe. It's about bad faith and hypocrisy-- plenty of that to go around. But maybe there's no point in going on, pointing fingers-- after all, I take Ace's and Kensington's point, which is a good one. What's important now is not who's right or wrong, winning an argument in a blog comments section. It's about rallying together and getting the SCOAMF out. Whatever facilitates that, I'm all for.

If someone could explain this to me sincerely, it would do more than all the arguments about delegate math put together.

In the end, what Romney supporters and Romney detractors may argue will sound hollow-- or be ineffective in moving you from whatever your current feelings toward Romney (pro or con) are. There are plenty of good arguments for Romney-- that are not just anti-Obama-- but those tend to fall on deaf ears (if you're already set against him). Anything us "Mittbots" might say isn't going to have much credibility for you. (Though probably Ace's account of his experience-- who was much more resistant to Romney throughout the primaries, yet has lately come around for the general-- if he cared to expand on it, would be more persuasive for you.)
But again, in the end, all of that will be secondhand. If you've already listened to recent Romney speeches and been turned off, then it may help for Ace or others to explain their shift. But if you haven't, I recommend listening to Romney himself-- not what other people say about Romney. You might be pleasantly surprised.

We wanted someone to publicly name Obama as the Marxist anti-capitalist anti american Manchurian candidate that we know he is in our souls.
McCain was too much a political animal to ever make unequivocal statements like that and tried to dress up his cowardice as being fair and civil. He lost.
Many didn't care about being fair and civil and saw McCain's meek and mild handling of an obvious demagogue and charlatan as the final recognition of McCain's lack of fire or having any conservative tendencies so they stayed home.
I fear that the disappointment in Romney being candidate and his failure to inspire will lead to the same conclusion as 2008. For much the same reasons that sunk McCain. We might even have a flash of zeal if Romney selects someone that would momentarily cause conservatives to forget all his negatives but who could that be at this point? Plus Romney doesn't have that "what the hell" gene like McCain did.
This is like O.J.'s trial. We know he's guilty (Obama) but the Prosecutors (RNC) are just not up to the level of showmanship of a Johnny Cochran. Add on top that they had lousy witnesses (Newt, Santorum, Perry, Bachmann, Cain, Paul et al) and didn't extract the testimony (inspiration) that would convince a jury (us) he was the killer. They've given us a placeholder.
We know in our hearts Obama is going to win this. Not that he deserves it or that the Democrats have earned it. We've handed them the victory now that Romney's the candidate. We KNOW in our hearts we've lost. That is the real denial we're in right now.
We'll continue to fight on but this milquetoast, mediocre, lukewarm bucket of spit can't/won't win over Obama.
Welcome to the Umma of the West.
Face it the Old Media has won and the U.S. is swirling around the bowl. Best to get on with preparations for the inevitable.

Why the hatred for Romney? It has to stem from a feeling of total uselessness..
Why the hatred of the GOP? IF you hate the GOP you must love the Dimocrats. Grow up, AH's; there is only ONE alternative to the Dimocrats and that is the GOP. You can dream about your alternatives; but you can't escape reality. So, you can sit with our thumb up your ass, and let the Dims walk off with election; or you can STFU and go vote. Those are the choices.

As long as Romney does not add a National Sales Tax to his election platform, Conservatives will overwhelmingly turn out to support him - as we should.
Many of us will even surprise ourselves and discover that we actually feel obligated to donate money to his election effort to defeat Obama - as we should.
Early on in the debates Santorum seemed in some ways more conservative than Romney but less likely to perform as well in a General Election. He seemed a perfectly acceptable alternative but who was very unlikely to pose a serious challenge to Romney because his polls were so low, his campaign lacked sufficient national organization, and he was not well funded.
In recent months Santorum proved to be a serious competitor. But he also surprised me by repeatedly revealing an abrasive and unpleasant side to his personality that is very off putting.
Ultimately, Santorum would have amounted to a snake-bit nominee and would have been a much tougher sell in the General Election. He chronically manages to blunder into and exacerbate polarizing issues; in years past he has produced a sizable catalog of in-artful rhetoric on divisive issues that would repeatedly come back to haunt him; and he often issues a disdainful - even disgusted - smirk and vocal tone when talking about or to his opponents. And unfortunately - to top it all off - Santorum has shown a propensity to eventually display a palpable personal animus and ugliness against his opponents. These are all significant (though not necessarily insurmountable) liabilities in a General Election.
Like I said, Santorum would have been the snake-bit option: acceptable but highly worrisome.
We need a Happy Warrior. We need someone who looks good even when he's attacking his opponent.
We have that in Romney.
We have our nominee. And he's good. And he's conservative.

Still a free country and words are wind. Why does someone saying things you don't want to hear bother you so much?
Better that you STFD and take a deep breath.
It ain't over till November.

you reference high school and then pull the ole' "IF you hate the GOP you must love the dimocrats" that fucking line of logic comes straight out of middle school.

If you can't vote against both the DIABLO and the weakest incumbent in history, then you don't want good government, now do you?
Pretty simple, really.

lots of misinformation here,
"Conservatives will flock to Romney in November"? I think you mean "moderates and those posing as conservatives" will flock to Romney in November.
"Why the hatred for Romney? It has to stem from a feeling of total uselessness.."
Actually, it has to stem from his being a liberal dressed in GOP clothing. Romneycare, Cap n' Trade, tripling of gun license fees, appointing democrat judges at a 3:1 rate, thrice denying Reagan....
the hatred is from true conservatives who aren't blinded by the establishment and the constant flip-flopping of a candidate who's moral compass points only towards self-validation.

The man simply can't relate to those who aren't part of his twin subcultures of Mormons and billionaire business men. When he attempts to do so it is pathetic. I was embarrassed for him in Wisconsin when he tried to show his human side by talking about his dad moving all of American Motor's operation to Wisconsin. Great work Mitt!. Remind voters again how you were born with a silver spoon in your mouth and that your dad also liked to shut down businesses and fire people.
On the morning of the Wisconsin primary the prediction was the 2012 turnout might approach the 2008 level of 35%. The evening of the Wisconsin primary the turnout came in at 23% and Romney got a whopping 41.1%.
That is Mitt Romney's effect on voters and it could kill us down the ballot come November. Romney is simply the worse candidate I have seen on the national ticket in my lifetime. That includes Hillary Clinton, a woman with all the political instincts of a stone.

I say let Obama win and let the whole damn thing collapse. Then free people can self-organize and pick up the pieces.
There. Got that out of my system.

What is so funny in 08 he was the "conservative alternative" and now he is the establishment, RINO, squish. I guess that's good news because it shows how much the republicans are shifting right.

I don't know anyone can support Santorum, the whiner and baldface liar. His PA constituents booted him out for lying to them and now he lies or mischaracterizes Mitt Romney's record in nearly every speech he gives. He is a nasty piece of work and is about as far from conservative you can get. Look at his record.
Romney, OTOH, is a hard-line fiscal conservative, which is exactly what we need.
Of course, if you want to keep "your woman" barefoot and pregnant as a 2nd class citizen, vote for Santorum. If you want to see your country pulled back from the brink of bankruptcy, nullify Obamacare if the court doesn't do it first, get a budget on the table and get to balancing it, then Mitt's your guy.
I predict that he will become one of our best presidents ever. To the cynics out there, I know it is rare, but Mitt is one those rarest in politics, a really good man. Honest, faithful, and true and someone who will always put the country first. Believe in America!!

It is clear that Mitt Romney will win the Republican Nomination for President.
Consequently, it is becoming ridiculously obvious that all remaining Romney-haters are effectively engaged in the campaign against him becoming President. (They can no longer cover themselves with the thin veil that they really just want to see someone else win the nomination. – That’s over.)
That essentially puts them in league with the Obama campaign.
And that's all we really need to know about them.
ItÂ’s ironic that they hurl the utterly irrational and lame insult that Romney supporters are trolls. We are? Really? Trolls pretend to be something other than they are.
But consider that they are the ones who are verbally tearing down a man of significant accomplishment who has embraced the Paul Ryan plan and who is solely challenging Obama for the Presidency. That makes them the trolls. – And from here on out, they should always be dismissed as such. Call them by their category: Obama Trolls.
And even more specifically: Romney Bashing Obama Trolls. (Or: RBOTs )
Posted by: _Dave_ at April 06, 2012 11:08 AM (2amQY)
When there was a chance that an alternative candidate could win the Republican nomination, we could give the Romney-bashers the benefit of the doubt. Now, those who continue to bash Romney have no excuse left. They are Obama Trolls bashing Romney - plain and simple. They were probably always Obama Trolls pretending to support weaker nominees. - Just so they could get their jollies by ripping on the likely Republican nominee who would eventually be challenging their precious, messianic Obama.
Their continuing attacks on Romney reveal their true agenda.

I'll try to take your advice and listen more to Romney and less to Romney's cheerleaders. If I notice a change, I'll report back. Thanks again.
