Massachusetts: No Deadbeat Left Behind
— andy

The Bay State got a black eye last Fall when it was reported that certain people, let's call them "deadbeats", were abusing the Massachusetts Electronic Benefits Transfer card, which we will refer to as "welfare".

A Team 5 Investigation found more than $2.3 million in Massachusetts welfare money, meant to help the needy buy food, pay their rent and clothe their children, has been spent in locations outside the state in a three-month period, including pricey vacation destinations like Hawaii, Las Vegas, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.

In response to learning that deadbeats were abusing the welfare system, the Commonwealth did what you'd expect it to do: it formed a commission to study the problem. That commission released its report and recommendations this week.

Strip clubs, tattoo parlors, nail salons, gun shops and casinos would be banned from accepting taxpayer-funded EBT cards under a blue-ribbon panel’s report slated to be unveiled today — but Republicans warn the so-called reforms will hardly put a dent in rampant abuse of the taxpayer-funded system.

“The report is woefully inadequate to address any of the problems we were charged with addressing,” said state Rep. Shaunna O’Connell (R-Taunton), who originally called for the commission’s creation.

“It’s probably the least reform we could do and say that something got done. (emphasis added)

Wonderful. The boning of the Masssachusetts taxpayer continues apace.

If you're wondering why O'Connell is so down on the reforms, here's your answer:

Republicans argued the reforms donÂ’t get to the root of the problem, because EBT card recipients can still use their cards at ATMs to access cash, which is then nearly impossible to trace.

That's right, a Massachusetts EBT card doesn't have to be used For The Children™ at all. It's a direct cash payment.

I honestly don't know why they're bothering to put any restrictions on where the cards can or can't be used if they're going to allow the deadbeats to make welfare ATM withdrawals.

Also keep in mind that a Venn diagram of the deadbeats and people the Democrats say would be disenfranchised by a voter i.d. requirement basically looks like this: O

Anyone who thinks people whose occupation consists of sucking money out of the taxpayers won't beat down the doors to get the photo i.d. needed to vote themselves a paycheck is delusional.

Which brings up an interesting idea. Why not put a photo on the EBT card?

Deval and his gang would like to crack down, they really would. But thereÂ’s no money, donÂ’t you know.

Like two years ago, when the Democrats said they couldn’t afford to run a check on every welfare recipient to see if they were in the country legally — not at the outrageous cost of $7 per illegal.

This time the state considered photo IDs for the EBT cards. It was the same old story: “The Department did not have adequate staff to process the necessary volume of photo IDs, and did not find that photos were a deterrent for fraud.”

You just can't make this stuff up, folks.

Representatives from over 70 countries – headed by U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton but without delegates from Russia and China – will try once again to formulate the policies for dealing with the crisis in Syria. At the very least, delegates are seeking to assist tens of thousands of Syrian refugees and citizens stranded in their homes, suffering from the military's attacks while having no access to medical attention and basic food supplies. Hillary is acting like she is a complete waste of a human being. She can't actually be this stupid.

93 46 years later, Ann-Margret back on Yorktown The Associated Press Posted : Saturday Mar 31, 2012 10:39:51 EDT MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. — Singer and actress Ann-Margret is performing on the decommissioned aircraft carrier Yorktown for the first time in almost half a century. Ann-Margret performs in a benefit concert Saturday night on the carrier at the Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum on Charleston Harbor. The last time she was on the ship, she performed in a 1966 USO concert with singer Johnny Rivers when the carrier was off Vietnam during the Vietnam War. At that time, when her plane circled the carrier to land, sailors gathered and spelled out a greeting on the flight deck. Saturday’s concert is scheduled to feature 1960s music and a silent auction benefiting the Patriots Point Institute of History and Science. They don't make girls like Ann-Margret anymore

But it's funny that the Left is using the exact same argument for why Obamacare gives them the right to tell people what to eat and prohibit smoking. And that's the whole point of the Left's health care reform -- full control when it eventually becomes a "single payer/universal" system. Since the government is providing your health care, you will not smoke, you will not eat bacon, salt, etc.

There used to be little signs over the items in grocery stores that were "Food Stamp/WWC Approved".

Those are gone now. ....But it used to be only the items that were 'basic food necessities' that were eligible to be purchased with Food Stamps.

369 The Democommie's version of health insurance is not insurance.  When you add "pre-existing conditions" to it it is no longer insurance. It becomes a health care provider network.

What chaffes my but about that is the lies they told about people who could not get insurance because of per-existing conditions. You could get it but it cost more.  That is unless you went with a company policy.

I had a former co-worker who was a self-employed consultant.  His wife got some kind of rare cancer and his insurance canceled him after the initial hospital visits.  He went in-house so that he could be insured under the company's umbrella policy.

http://is.gd/g2T5bp

1964 Galaxy 500R with 427. They only made a few of these.  That particular engine had dual 4 barrel carbs and was rated at 425HP. Hahahahaha the insurance companies knew better.

I read a hot rod magazine a few years ago that went out and found a lot of these old engines in junk yards and rebuilt them to original factor specs so they could run them on a  dyno and compare them to modern engines for HP. I don't remember what this one rolled out at, but the old mopar 426 hemi cranked out an honest 1000 hp measured by today's standards. It was rated at 425 also.

391 #6 etc:

New York State has both photos and thumbprints on EBT cards.  It stopped some fraud right away:  I had a pal who worked in the record room of the county charity hospital years ago, and one girl's medical file showed that every time she came in for an abortion, her physical particulars (height and weight, blood type) were different.  One girl legitimately owned the card, but she was passing it around to her friends who weren't on the system so they could get their own govt-paid abortions.  Photo-ID and thumbprints did away with that.  It would be interesting to see the difference between NYS and Mass fraud levels.

412 "I had a former co-worker who was a self-employed consultant. His wife got some kind of rare cancer and his insurance canceled him after the initial hospital visits. He went in-house so that he could be insured under the company's umbrella policy." Which is why we need health care reform in this country. Your friend *had* health insurance and as soon as he needed it, they cancelled it because his wife *got sick.* A system that supplies reasonably-priced insurance only if you have a large employer is insane. It' even more insane if people are losing their jobs and then losing their insurance.

Well, if you're looking for updates on all things Trayvon, the local AM station (540 WFLA and yes, I listen to AM radio. Yes, I'm a dork. No I'm not 70), they had exerpts from an interview with Zimmerman's next door neighbor who says he saw Z the next day and that he was a bruised and cut up mess. I think the guy gave his name and such, too, which is brave. Sharpton's looking for a riot I'm sure and I wouldn't want to be on their shitlist when it all goes down.

**********

Legal Insurrection had a link the other day to the PDF for the police report from the first Sanford PD officer who arrived on the scene.  According to the report, when the officer got there Martin was lying motionless face-down on the ground, and Zimmerman was standing nearby.  The officer said Zimmerman's back was wet and had grass on it, his nose was bleeding, and he had a gash in the back of his head that was also bleeding.  The officer did not question Zimmerman, (detectives were on the way), he just put him in the back of his squad car.  The officer heard Zimmerman say (while in the back of the car) that he had screamed for help, but no one would help him.  The report also says that when Sanford FD paramedics arrived, they treated Zimmerman's wounds in the back of the squad car (while the other paramedics were trying, unsuccessfully, to revive Martin).

All this BS in the media about how Zimmerman had no injuries that night is flatly contradicted by the police report.

414 #416 Actually what Gerry said brought some things into focus, at least for me. I have a job and I have to go to work everyday. They take money out of my check so people who don't have a job can take trips to the Virgin Islands, Hawaii, and Las Vegas. These are all places I've never been and can't afford to visit. Gerry's argument is there is nothing wrong with that because Vegas has a Motel 6. Thanks Gerry! You just convinced me to become a conservative.

416 Zimmerman's injuries are irrelevant: in the state of Florida you cannot use a firearm to defend yourself against simple assault. You can use a firearm for aggravated assault. Aggravated assault is assault with a weapon. Look, I've got a concealed carry permit in Florida and it's my problem if another CCW holder does something foolish: it results in stupid laws being passed to prevent the incident from happening again. Firearm defense classes universally teach you to NEVER initiate a confrontation while carrying a weapon. Stay in your car. Do not initiate contact.

422 @421; the way I heard it was that the struggle was a simple scuffle until Z realized that T had discovered that Z was armed and was trying to acquire the firearm from Z's holster.  Perhaps the shooting itself was accidental in the struggle for the firearm? Surely the proper owner of the weapon needs to attempt to maintain possession of his weapon, rather than surrender it calmly to a (presumably) unqualified and aggressive person bent on stealing it from him?  Surely that would turn the simple scuffle into a life-and-death struggle.. which, it turned out, it was...
