— Ace Since, after all, this comic book killed some people.*
Excellent post, with great links, from Instapundit. Even archliberal Kevin Drum thinks it's time for Brian Ross to find another job, and even Gawker calls him "breathtakingly reckless."
He should be working for reality tv or Jerry Springer. He has that huckster mentality.
Oh: See RD in the sidebar. Something I wanted to link all day. But I can't actually link a sidebar item.
Therein linked is Elizabeth "The Anchoress" Scalia's thoughts on "enthrallment" to political tribes.
* It's of course just speculation at this point that the killer was inspired by this similar scene from The Dark Knight Returns.
But let's ban comic books, and all movies which contain any amount of violence, just to be sure.

1.) Everything is politisized.
2.) Archey never fucked Veronica.

Many people forget, Marx is a bloody guy. When he talks revolution he ain't talking about the ballot box. He's explicitly not talking about the ballot box, in fact.

Owners will be required to store them in BATF approved gun safes, install burglar alarms, and submit to random BATF searches of premises to make sure all logged comic books are still present and accounted for.

I'm not sure incidence rates have gone up, but media tech has allowed coverage of incidents to vastly increase.
The media has often whined about crime waves in the past when crime was declining. Its hard to separate increased media attention from increased rates without looking at the hard crime data.

I couldn't help it. I had to ask if Loughner was sparked by the inherent violence of diagramming sentences? Given his "grammar" obsession, it's as reasonable as blaming a movie which the shooter had probably not yet seen.

I would also suggest that the decrease in personal responsibility in the last few decades probably adds to the problem.

61 Hollywood believes it influences people. It's called advertising, and its how TV in particular makes its money. If people aren't affected by what they see on the screen, would they like to make that case in front of the advertisers, the people they assure of their ability to influence behavior?
------------
Yup.
And what about Campaign Ads?
Are we going to say that those don't influence behavior?
As I said earlier, in another thread.....I'm not advocating government censorship.
But I think that the Entertainment Industry should be held accountable for the products that they put out......just like the other industries are already held accountable, if they put out a product that proves to be harmful.

Since the late 60's, when the idea of moral relativism and political correctness took the place of basic (religious) morals, events like today's were enevitable.
People who are looking at the sanity aspect of this are only half right. What we're glimpsing is the depravity of a society that turns it's back on the concept of right and wrong. We can thank our learning insitutions and the idea of seperation of church and state, as it's being used today, for most of this.
I'm seeing a correlation between our society and all the movies about souless zombies that so many people enjoy. And it's not that zombie movies cause this, it's that zombie movies reflect a general trend in people's attitude toward each other.

Oh, honestly - how many billion movie-hours are watched each year, and how many acts of violence can be "attributed" to them?
Run the numbers, people.
And bear in mind that in 2011, we TIED the second-lowest murder rate since 1960 (4.6 per 100,000).

Anyone who works in law enforcement or psychiatry will tell you that there are the rare personalities that are just plain "nuts" (for lack of a better word).
Nobody knows what will set them off, nobody knows what they will be obsessed with, nobody knows if they will ultimately do others harm.
They are exceedingly rare, and you could ban everything in the world.
They would still find a way to act out their fantasies/obsessions/ideas.

Doctors are required to watch hours of film footage....of people, in various shapes and sizes.....ugly people, pretty people, you name it.
[or at least they used to do this]
The idea behind this....is to 'desensitize' Doctors, towards their patients.
So that Doctors can maintain a "clinical distance" towards their patients....and not be turned on by the pretty women, or repulsed, by the ugly ones.
It works.
Or at least, that's the theory....and I don't know if they still require Doctors to go through those 'desensitization classes' or not.
But it was required for a long time.
So the concept of people becoming 'desensitized' towards something....if they see a lot of it.....is not a radical concept.

Well, first off, because they're kids. I love a well done horror movie as much as the next person and I've enjoyed them since I was a kid.
But one of the things my parents, the church they made me go to, and school hammered into me was the concept of right and wrong. If there's no formative instruction in those basics for children as they're growing up, then children shooting up theaters or whatever will continue.
When I was growing up, there was nothing on this scale that happened. The first one I can remember was the TX university tower shooting. And the reason he didn't kill more people is that private citizens got their guns and started shooting back, keeping his head down.
