— Gabriel Malor I didn't give much credence to anecdotes from Not-Romney commentators suggesting that the Tea Partiers would sit out if Romney became the candidate (and I was right), and I don't give much credence to anecdotes from journalists that "rank-and-file Republicans" are having trouble accepting Romney.
A WaPo columnist gathered a group of Floridian Republicans and Republican-leaning independents to ask them how they feel about Romney. Their comments, claims the columnist, "illuminate the conflicting issues that many voters are sorting out as the general-election campaign begins."
You get that? The following quotation is supposed to "illuminate" the issues that voters are sorting out right now. And it is also the first thing in the article (and therefore the thing the writer believes to be most important for readers to read) that the writer cites as a "conflicting issue[] that many voters are sorting out."
The former Massachusetts governor’s personal wealth is a big barrier to them. Even these sympathetic voters can’t relate personally to the man who wants to lead their party and the country. “He’s not coming across as a regular guy,” said Bruno Kazenas, a school music teacher.“It’s hard to be around a guy with that much money,” said Jonathan Rosa, a deputy police officer. He added that it would take a lot to get him to support Obama but that he might back a third-party candidate over Romney.
Ron Romonchuk, a retired consultant, called Romney “a 1 percenter” who has never gotten his hands dirty. He recalled former president George H.W. Bush going to a “hole in the wall” restaurant while in office. “I don’t ever see Mitt Romney doing that,” Romonchuk said.
Wait, wait, wait. There are so many things fundamentally wrong with this picture, it's hard to know where to start. But, the obvious:
It is utterly untrue that the Republican rank-and-file are having or are going to have a hard time accepting Romney's wealth. How do I know? Because there is a man in the Oval Office right now who complained about arugula. Because JFK. Actually, because of the JFKs (Kennedy and Kerry). Because the net worth of every president for at least the past two generations (and a notable founder, too) has exceeded by at least two, and often three, orders of magnitude the average net worth of a voter.
You know what Republican rank-and-file are struggling with right now? Paying for gas. Keeping their job or finding a replacement in the Obama Economy. Worrying about their retirement savings and going prematurely gray over whether their children will have the same opportunities that they did.
The Republican rank-and-file is not, I guarantee you, spending a lot of time wringing their hands over Romney's money. These folks also, I guaran-damn-tee you, are not using phrases like "he's a 1 percenter." (Even if they were, the President doesn't fall in the so-called 99 percent either; he spent the past week suggesting that the Buffett Rule---the tax for millionaires---would fall on him and that he can afford it.)
By the way, if you click to the second page of the article, you'd find that at least one of these "rank-and-file Republicans" voted for Obama in 2008. Another is supporting Obama this time around. As you would expect, though, he's not very bright. Here's his comment about Romney:
“He has a hard time being a regular guy,” he said. “He makes it very obvious by putting jeans on. He picks up phrases from the particular parts of the country he’s in. . . . He tries to fit in too hard.”
He thinks that President Momjeans "Can I Get Arugula On My Cheeseburger?" Obama is "a regular guy"? Get. The. Frak. Out. Of. Here.
Other "conflicting issues" cited in the column: where Romney would sit at a basketball game, and is he "cool or buttoned down?" Maybe it's just me, but I'm sort of getting the impression that these anecdotes from supposed "Republican rank-and-file" are just fodder for a vague and frivolous attempt to write yet another column accusing Romney of being weird. What do you think?

This reminds me of a CBS News story I read earlier today (http://tinyurl.com/7rdd6qu) from a link through Weasel Zipper's sidebar about Romney's dig at Obama's golfing.
The dig: "I must say I scratch my head at the capacity of the president to take four hours off on such a regular basis to go golfing."
Pretty good, right?
Then they go on to talk about Obama's lavish vacations for himself and his family, jetting around on the taxpayer dime. I was really quite surprised at the even-handed nature with which the article was progressing, given that it is CBS.
But then I get to the final two paragraphs, and that's where the bias comes out like Anthony's Weiner on a Twitter account:
...When the Romney family goes on vacation, the likely GOP nominee has a choice between a rambling, luxury home with horse stables that he owns on a lake in New Hampshire and another multimillion-dollar vacation home he owns on the California coast. Romney also has taken his family on overseas getaways.
...Give me a fucking break! As if the two situations are even remotely comparable! Romney is not taking his family on vacation ON THE TAXPAYER DIME. Romney is not sending his wife and children to exotic locales when the average American can barely afford the gas to get to and from work! Romney is not pigging out on junk food and wagyu beef while preaching at us to eat more arugula and lay off the salt! ROMNEY NEVER ATE A DOG.
The topic of the Obama family's vacation habits was recently raised when a St. Louis television reporter told Obama that some of his viewers were upset to see him "jetting around" on vacations while they struggled. The president said he believes the American people understand that he is working hard on their behalf.
First off, the topic of "the Obama family's vacation habits" has been raised repeatedly almost since he was sworn in. This is not a recent development. And secondly, that was not Obama's quote. Obama's quote was as follows:
"I think most folks understand how hard I work and how hard this administration is working on behalf of the American people."
Not how hard HE'S working on behalf of the American people. Just how hard he's working in general. Just generally busy. It's his Administration that's working on behalf of "the people." And trust me, we don't want their damn help!

Mitt Romney continued his assault on President Barack Obama's record Thursday, insisting he's "more intent on punishing people" with higher taxes and government regulation than "getting people back to work."

Let's be honest, nearly every President in my lifetime has been what most would consider well-off when they entered the White House. Obama is a millionaire and so is Romney. So what? Neither of them are financially struggling.
I was amazed how many ABRs tried to make the 1% Occupy Wall Street argument. guess what? If the GOP nominated a homeless guy, they'd still say he was a tool of Wall Street.
Right now in a struggling economy, I think "successful businessman with private sector experience" sells a lot better than someone who's been on the government dole since they graduated from High School.

Just take the moron horde for example. I cannot give a better example of a large group who really disliked Mitt during the primaries. But since Santorum stepped out, it's amazing how most have come aboard ship Romney. If these morons are gonna back Romney (even if reluctantly), I know it is simply bullshit that vast numbers of GOP voters are still split and wringing their hands over voting for him. Speaking of not getting your hands dirty, consulting is the ultimate gig for that.

Being an evil Mormon cultist, I know exactly how often Mitt has probably got his hands dirty as a member, a bishop and a stake president. Active members in our dark cult often provided a great deal of service to others. Personally I have weeded acres of farm land, removed a roof, built a shelter to protect a trailer, helped move a bagillion people, shoveled drives for elderly members, provided rides for disabled members, trash removal - it goes on. Mitt being an older member than I, has probably done much more than I.
So ya - Mitt has worked with his hands, got them dirty, and did it for others. That's all part of being a member of the LDS church. AND that is definately not being a "normal" guy. (Do libs ever work for others?)

Where, as a teapartier, I have trouble with Mitt is that I don't think he is going to be radical enough. I don't think he'll have the balls to evicerate the welfare state, which must be done in order to salvage the government's finances and our freedom.
But he's just another Rockefeller Republican. Which means we will just slide toward the precipice a bit slower.
That's what I don't like about Romney. It has jack all to do with his wealth.
