McConnell: Guys Seriously, We'll Repeal ObamaCare
— DrewM

Via Gabe from a couple of days ago but with this weird week you may have missed it. McConnell is emphatic that repealing ObamaCare is job 1 if the GOP has the House, Senate and White House.

Over the weekend, you and Chris Wallace of Fox News had an exchange about the uninsured, where you said that’s “not the issue.” What did you mean by that? And what is your preferred policy for covering more of the uninsured?

Our goal, number one, is to repeal and replace Obamacare. Number two, is to address the health care that the federal government has already got, which is in deep trouble, both Medicare and Medicaid. Earlier today I saw that 15 governors have now said that theyÂ’re going to opt out of the additional Medicaid mandate, now that the Supreme Court has made it clear that they have the option to do so. I think we will be looking at every angle to replace this, and what itÂ’s replaced with, of course, depends on what the market looks like at that time. For example, the private health-insurance market has already responded on the growing demand to leave 26-year-olds on policies, because itÂ’s turning out to be a good business decision for them. The issue of preexisting conditions has always been complex. Half of the states are addressing that with high-risk pools. IÂ’m not convinced that issue needs to be addressed at the federal level. We will see. But job one is to replace Obamacare in its entirety, clean up the health care weÂ’re already responsible for, and then weÂ’ll see where we go from there.

This is a really great point. The federal government has done a lousy job with the health insurance programs it runs so the idea that it is in a position to run the private market was always ludicrous.

As for the uninsured, Obama sold his plan as lowering costs for people and making the insurance they had better, the additional coverage was always a secondary point. If he'd been honest and said, "we're going to make your coverage worse and more expensive to cover people who don't have any (and coincidentally who mostly vote for Democrats)" it would have never passed. So no, covering 30 million or so more people isn't the issue, it's preserving it for the hundreds of millions of Americans who already have coverage.

As for people who doubt his and the GOP's commitment to repeal, McConnell has a message.

Boy, I don’t know how they could be suspicious on this issue. Every single Republican in the House and Senate voted against Obamacare. I must have made 125 speeches about it on the floor. If there is any area where I don’t think conservatives of any stripe should be concerned, it would be this one. We’ve been clear and unambiguous about Obamacare from the beginning to the end — all of it. And I led the fight in the Senate, so I know what I’m talking about.

I know that Romney is focused exclusively on a message of "Obama and the economy stink" but he really needs to start talking more about repealing ObamaCare.

First, it is an economic issue.

Second, people don't need to be told the economy is awful. Everyone knows that. ObamaCare made things worse, repeal will make it better.

Finally, even though ObamaCare is unpopular (not because Obama hasn't sold it well but because people understand how bad it is) repeal will still be tough. Don't think so? How long is the list of repealed massive government entitlement programs? Yeah. We need to lay the political ground work to do it. Mitt needs to be able to talk about more than one issue and ObamaCare needs to be talked about and most importantly...repealed.

15 Repeal will be a tough slog and the leftards will sue and will not easily let Obamacare be undone, however, it is the fight worth fighting and prevailing in ... in any way possible.  Down and dirty, by any means, the GOP must prevail in dismantling Obamacare and it's many tentacles ... because they are cleverly going to persist unless rooted out from the Government system.

The Government is infested with Big-Government democrats and they will do their best to keep what they've got going even if they have to lie and cheat.. cause that's what they do.

24 The answer  to the health care issue is simple; it is like any other economic problem: let the free market work.  There is too much - not too little - regulation right now.

There are vast numbers of professionals: nurses, EMTs, PAs, etc. who are fully qualified to treat most complaints.  But government licensing restrictions are way, way too severe - people who know how to do things are not allowed to do them.  Ever have the nurse take your blood pressure; then she refuses to tell you?  She'll tell the Doc - and probably explain to him what it means.  But the Gov't won't let her (or him - excuse me) tell you.

Now - Gov't does have a function in requiring disclosure.  All these people should make full disclosure of their abilities - and their limitations.  And the Gov't can punish fraudulent disclosure.  But the market now is substantively perverted.

This is blithering idiocy, and costs us hugely.  Get government out of the way!!

But this Obamacare issue is not the number 1 issue. It's just too damn convoluted and confusing to connect with people on, not to mention the fact that it's not yet having a direct tangible impact on people. It's the economy. It's Jobs. It's gas. It's groceries. It's housing.

Then go back to Roberts and tell the shit head they won't reword the mandate to be a tax. End of story. But it won't happen like that because the Dems will stall at every turning point. So in essence you are more right than I am. But I just wanted to put it out there. The easiest way to repeal is make them choke on the mandate then let Roberts do what he should have done the first fucking time.

I don't know if you caught Romney's this morning responding to the BLS June jobs report, but he explicitly called out ObamaCare as the reason why 2/3 of small businesses say they're not hiring.  The trick is to continue tying ObamaCare to the dismal economy, and Romney seems capable of doing this.

49 I think the R governors (and some D ones) have the destruction of ObamaTax in the palms of their hands . . . if they opt out! It all falls down like the house of cards it is. Essentially, there were stupid states that mandated all kinds of crap in their Medicaid plans (MEDICAID covering IF treatment!?!? really?!?!) and they didn't want to pay for this largesse, being liberals. Ocare is just a way for them to not have to pay for these mandatory (usually statewide stupid mandates) coverage items. But if states that are not as boned all opt out . . . whoopsie! how is the Fed going to cover that? Again, I'm resigned to the fact that our best outcome at this point is a fedgov BK, how does that happen tho? could get ugly.

You need to be careful putting actual legislation on the street that you cannot get passed, because a vague talking point then becomes defined and specific. It is a known quantity the more the American people know about any plan, the less they like it, because you can say with specificity and certainty what the bad things are about it. If they were going to repeal they would need an alternate conservative fix for the cost of healthcare, if they put that on the street way early, it would just get picked apart by the MSM until folks figured sticking with O-Care was a better bet.

The RNC needs to get busy with the personal horror stories of how bad state-controlled healthcare is.  A Canadian judge has ruled that access to "insurance" is not the same thing as access to "healthcare" but that ruling is conveniently being ignored by the healthcare dictators up there who benefit from denying citizens access to care.

A couple of summers ago, a Canadian woman who was pregnant with quadruplets went into early labor.  In all of Canada they couldn't find a neo-natal intensive care unit that had four incubators available at that time.

The Canadian govt paid a hospital in Montana to take this woman, deliver her babies, and care for them until they could travel.  Is there anyone in the USA who would make the trip to Montana to get this kind of care?  Unless they live in Montana of course.

My point is that all hospitals in the USA, even those in rural locations, provide topnotch care, quality care not available at any price under socialized medicine.

The Obama administration has already written 13,000 new pages of regulations that will strangle taxpayers and businesses in red tape.

The Obama administration is preparing to hire 16,500 new IRS agents to enforce their "not a tax" taxes.

The non-partisan CBO (which scores legislation) admits that ObamaTax is going to cause Americans' health care costs to go up, and is also going to increase our deficits for many years to come.

Romney needs to keep reminding Americans of these facts each time he speaks about ObamaTAX.

82 46 Posted by: cajun carrot ........ You still need a GOP president and a GOP majority in the Senate. Posted by: Chi-Town Jerry There is a kernel of truth there. The House has passed several unrelated bills that included language that specifically defund parts of Obamacare but when Barry signed them he used signing statements to simply ignore that part. If the GOP would scream about this they might get across the fact that the administration is literally breaking the law constantly. Most everyday voters don't realize how blatantly corrupt Barry's administration has become. The GOP also hasn't tried putting a bloody horse's head next to Barry while he's sleeping. They sent somebody to do that once but he saw Michelle and thought someone had beat him to it.

You know, to make it more "market oriented". Face it, you go into government because you think more government can help. If you really thought big government was the problem you'd be in the private sector making money and being awesome. Admit it, Obama's right, his law is here to stay.

They you would have doctors lining up to see uninsured patients to off set their taxes. The credit could be set at medicaid rates or even with a slight discount, which is better than the nothing a doctor currently gets for the free care that they provide.

99 "I know that Romney is focused exclusively on a message of "Obama and the economy stink" but he really needs to start talking more about repealing ObamaCare."

No, he doesn't.  Come September he can talk about ObamaCareTax.  For now, his focus is, and should be, the economy.  He needs to introduce himself as the man who understands America's most important issue, and that isn't health care.

The low information voters can't handle much, esp. now when they're not yet really paying attention.  Romney needs to pound on the economy all summer long: It sucks, Obama has made it worse, Romney will make it better.  That is the message we want everyone to hear, over and over again.  We don't want anyone who's lost their job in the last 5 years, or had their home value tank, saying "why is Romney wasting time on this unimportant crap, when the economy sucks."

Come September, when the low information voters can handle more than one issue at a time, by all means attack on ObamaCareTax and the Individual Mandate.  Those are ripe targets, and will be winners for the GOP.  But they'll be much bigger winners if the voters have already been convinced that Romney cares most about the economy.

ANYONE in management or executive level knows what it's doing to hiring. Repealing ACA is a hanging curve for Romney to run on. It's popular and it's a dead-simple obvious fix. Many of the other economic devices to turn things around are either controversial or complicated. Independents and leaners are not necessarily big fans of de-regulation, for example. And with the media beating the drum of what evil things happen when the awful GOP deregulates industries, it is not a simple sell. All it will take is another big oil spill or bank scandal for Obama/MSM to say "see, we have to protect you from these." Repealing a massive tax for a program people did not want to see passed in the first place is easy. And it is economic.

134 Related, on means to overcome federal law, AZ won't roll over for Obamster.

Arizona Daily Sun:

The Arizona Constitution already says the federal Constitution "is the supreme law of the land." This measure, if approved in November, it would add language saying that federal document may not be violated by any government -- including the federal government. More to the point, it would allow Arizonans "to reject any federal action that they determine violates the United States Constitution." That could occur through a vote of the state House and Senate with consent of the governor. But that also could occur through a popular vote on a ballot measure, effectively allowing voters to decide which federal laws they feel infringe on Arizona's rights as a sovereign state.

I'm very aware how much damage ObamaCare is doing to the economy.  I think that will be a great argument to make, in September.

Right now, the low information voters aren't paying attention.  They don't want to hear the bad economy is Obama's and the Democrats in Congress' fault (it is, but they don't want to hear that).

For decades I've wanted to enlighten the voters.  Ace's posts on the low information voters has caused me to give that up.  You want their vote?  Address what they care about, instead of what you (we) care about.

All summer long: The economy sucks, Obama hasn't done anything to make it better, Romney will.

In the fall, when they're actually starting to listen:
The economy sucks, because ObamaCare / EPA / other regulatory over-reach has been destroying business willingness to hire more people.  Vote Republican for President and Congress, so we can repeal the Individual Mandate, and Obama's other job destroying policies.  Every single Democrat in the Senate voted for ObamaCareTax.  It doesn't matter what they say, they will always be a vote for the extreme Left when it matters.  Vote Republican in the Senate, so we can repeal the Individual Mandate.

Do you want to win, or do you want to make yourself feel good?  If you want to win, talk about what the voters are interested in, not what you're interested in.

If the Republican's do not win this election their party is dead as yesterdays fish dinner.
If the Republican's do win the election Obamacare will become Romneycare and the whole shit storm starts again.
The word around my area is, Obama will win by hook or crook or voter fraud and litigation perhaps even an outright violent coup. The word around here is "anybody but Obama" this November. anybody, means I'd sooner vote for a complete fucking idiot before I'd vote for Obama.

Yes, it is.  It's also the "top concern" of IIRC 5% of voters.  What's the top concern of the majority of voters?  The economy.

Should Romney put out a position paper explaining how ObamaCare is damaging the economy?  Absolutely.  Should he be talking about it right now?

Hell no.  Right now, he's "introducing himself to the voters".  What is the #1 thing Romney wants those voters to know about him?  Romney will fix the economy.  Romney is "focused like a laser on your top concern, the economy."

Why?  Because it works.

“The highest corporate tax rates in the world do not create jobs,” Romney said. “Highest regulatory burdens in our nation’s history – those do not create jobs. Trade policies that have not opened up new markets for American goods, particularly in Latin America, those don’t create new jobs. Failing to effectively crack down on China for cheating and stealing American jobs, that has not helped.”

“The president’s policies have not gotten America working again, and the president’s going to have to stand up and take responsibility for it,” Romney continued. …

“It doesn’t have to be this way,” Romney said. “The president doesn’t have a plan. He hasn’t proposed any new ideas to get the economy going. Just the same old ideas of the past that have failed. I have a plan. My plan calls for action that will get America working again and create good jobs, both near term and long term.”

149 Let's put it this way, Mitch:
"I'll believe ya when me shit turns purple and smells like rainbow sherbet."
Only after the president signs the bill totally repealing every part of that gargantuan bill will I believe you. Until then I'm certain you'll find parts that just have to stay and that you'll work on a "revision" of the bill that's at least as awful as the original, then claim victory. Screw you, screw your party, and screw everyone who works in politics.
