Me And Mitt (And about 7,500 Legionnaires)
— DrewM

Just got back from Mitt Romney's speech to the American Legion.

As you'd expect the speech was heavy on veterans issues (especially health care and the VA) as well as national security.

I'm going by memory at this point so these aren't exact quotes.

First Romney began by noting some might not have expected him to be here since he was in Tampa yesterday and will be heading back for a little speech tomorrow.

IÂ’ll be heading back to Florida later today. And you may be wondering why IÂ’m not down there right now, practicing and polishing the final draft of my speech. My answer is this: When our nation called, you served. And I consider any opportunity to address our nationÂ’s veterans a privilege not to be missed.

This was a not so subtle jab at Obama who sent a video message yesterday. You see he was too busy overseeing hurricane relief planning campaigning at a college campus yesterday to show up.

Romney then when into his fairly standard stump speech about Obama abdicating leadership abroad but then tied it together with the impending sequestration debate (see my earlier post on that) and what it would mean for veterans...200,000 less servicemen and women (100k from planned budget cuts plus that number again under sequestration) means 200,000 new patients for an already overloaded VA system which would be facing cuts under sequestration.

We are now just months away from an arbitrary, across-the-board budget reduction that would weaken the military with a trillion dollars in cuts, severely shrink our force structure, and impair our ability to meet and deter threats. President Obama’s own Secretary of Defense has warned that these reductions would be “devastating.” And he is right.

The devastation will be felt here at home, where up to 1.5 million jobs could be lost. GDP growth could fall significantly. These cuts will place further stress on an already stretched VA system, and impair our solemn commitment that every veteran receives care second to none.

A year ago, President Obama told your national convention that, “We cannot, we must not, we will not, balance the budget on the backs of our veterans.” I thought I finally agreed with him on something – but now, he is on the verge of breaking that promise.

The Obama administration is set to cut defense spending by nearly a trillion dollars. My administration will not. Working together with my running mate, Paul Ryan, I will make reductions in other areas and install pro-growth policies to make sure that our country remains safe and secure. There are plenty of places to cut in a federal budget that now totals well over $3 trillion a year, but defense is not one of them.

You can see why sequestration is such a mess. It has so many known and unknown second order effects that run counter to saving money.

Romney then hit on something that draw applause and unexpected excitement from the crowd (based on the noises from people sitting around me). If a vet has to wait a certain period of time to get care they will be able to go to a Tri-Care provider and the VA will have to pay for it.

Another popular line was Romney opposing Obama's hikes in Tri-Care fees and funding ObamaCare on the backs of vets.

The Obama administration has also requested $12 billion in TRICARE fee increases. I will not ask our wartime military to shoulder more sacrifices while the rest of government grows. I will not ask our service members – active or retired – to pay more for their health care to free up room for Obamacare.

Paul Ryan got 2 or 3 shoutouts and was warmly received by an audience who in the main are at or near Medicare eligibility. Take that anecdote for what it's worth.

In short, it was solid speech that was well received. In fairness this was an easier speech in some senses to give because it was a politician promising to spend more and make government services more generous. Of course when it comes to conservatives, we are generally on board with defense and veterans spending so there's not much to complain about.

The Romney campaign is clearly going to make Obama's refusal to deal with sequestration (something he fought for originally) an issue of leadership and governing priorities.

As with many issues this election, the choices between the two visions is rather stark.

(Full disclosure: The American Legion invited me out to the convention and covered my travel and lodging expenses. No one from the Legion has seen or asked to see this post and they have no input whatsoever on its content.)

I'll link to the text of the speech and clean up/add quotes as soon as possible.

Added: I've added in quotes from the text of the speech as it was prepared for delivery. Sorry, no link, it was sent via email.

1 His "fairy standard stump speech?" I wonder if mythical creatures can vote. Though, it is impressive he is going stump to stump to speak with the forest creatures.

Off topic but this looks interesting. New film out where a dutch journalist bought a Liberian ambassadorship off the black market, which he used to smuggle blood diamonds out of the Central African Republic, and filmed the whole thing to expose the corruption.

Apparently the President of Liberia is trying to have him extradited from the Netherlands over it.

It's called "The Ambassador".

10 I am in Italy visiting my daughter whose husband recently deployed. I am trying watch coverage of the convention on AFN. Every third hour is a fox show. I just sat through Sheps show, entirely focused on Isaac. I am sorry if I sound callous, but people who were told to evacuate didn't and now all this attention gets focused on them. Did I mention that AFN is broadcasting the shows that played earlier today, so the news i am seeing is not even current . Well, at least in another hour I can watch The Five at 11pm here. CNN is covering Harrowing Rescues. Sigh.

Nope. Shinsheki was here yesterday boasting about how they are opening the first 3 new ones in years.

Part of the problem is they were planning on winding down some services because the WWII generation is passing away and it was so huge. Thing is...after 10 years of war the numbers exploded back up. They are playing catch up and are still pretty far behind in some places.

Possibly, Tricare has been abused and the services decreased and cost to servicemembers increased since Pelosi took over.  Any Veteran who can get to an active duty post hospital should.  Better service and if medical service is at all available negligible cost.

Translation if the socialist medical system known as the VA hospitals cannot get the job done in a timely manner, then feel free to use the capitalist medical system and have the socialist medical system pay for it out of their budget. IOW the VA will get some competition for their budget dollars from private health providers which means either they get efficient at providing care, or they die of money starvation.

Vermin Supreme lives just over a mile from me in MA. He bills himself as a "performance artist," and is pretty much a first-order lefty wacko. He is also running for president, and got at least six votes in my town at the primary election.

He also has a sense of humor. He sees dental health, organ transplants -- he's a kidney donor -- and ponies as major issues for the country. During public appearances, he wears a huge rubber boot on his head. One of his campaign slogans is "Ride Our Ponies Into the Future."

I bought two of his t-shirts. They're very cool.

God help me, if it wasn't so overwhelmingly vital to our nation's survival to kick Choom Boy's ass out of the White House, I might vote for him (again) in November.

53 "I will not ask our service members – active or retired – to pay more for their health care to free up room for Obamacare." I thought Romney was going to be instrumental in repealing Obamacare, and if so, why is he wrapped around the axle at the prospect of 'freeing up room for it?' You assholes who wanted a Romney bed can go sleep in it.

54 My father refuses to use the VA. His primary is Medicare and Part B is Tricare. In the last three or four years his co-pay on some meds have tripled, but means from $4 to $12 on $300 meds, so it's not so bad. I don't know what the future holds in store for Tricare, but my Dad has senile dementia and I'm his primary caregiver, AKA an amateur nurse. He's a shell of the man he once was. Caring for him has made me an emotional and physical wreck. I've got to get him placed into a VA nursing home. but because of the shortage of beds that takes six to twelve months. Plus, he has to give up his primary care physician for a VA doctor, something I'm not thrilled about. Being unemployed and caring for him for the last three years makes me basically unemployable at the age of 55. I am totally fucked. My only relief is booze and benzos. I gotta give credit to my brother, though, who is a metric shit-ton of help. But he has a shitty job that drains him an limits what he can do to help. I just drained and adjusted the piss bag so it's time for a teeny shot of the Old Grandad.
