— Ace Reporters have two problems: They're liberal, and they're lazy.
Before the SOTU, Obama's people leaked portions of the script. They announced to the media the tone they were seeking was "optimistic" and "Reaganesque," so the media would understand the tone they heard after they'd heard it.
They'd actually given the media its story for them.
I joked in the live-blog that we'd soon be seeing the headlines...
NYT: IN A SOARING, OPTIMISTIC SPEECH RECALLING REAGAN...
Whoopie Goldberg: That was so optimistic. Joy Behar: Almost Reaganesque.
Time: In a 65 minute speech brimming with optimism and Reaganesque flourishes...
Washington Post: Although Republicans sat on their hands throughout, Obama's mood was light and optimistic throughout the speech. At times, one might have mistake him for another Great Communicator -- Ronald Reagan.
Brian Willims: Certainly it was one of his most optimistic, Reagan-like performances...
Those were jokey semi-predictions. But here's the reality, at The Hill.
Confident Obama Struts His StuffA relaxed, confident Barack Obama hit a pitch-perfect high note last week at the famed Apollo Theater in New York.
President Obama sang, “I’m so in love with you” — from Al Green’s hit “Let’s Stay Together” — and showed the world just how comfortable — if not sanguine — he is as he heads into the election year.
Note a lot of these words, like sanguine, just mean optimistic.
....Both public appearances illustrate the assuredness and moxie the president has exhibited in his quest for another term. They also highlight a stark contrast with Mitt Romney, who has appeared unconfident and downright clunky in recent weeks, as he has dealt with a series of missteps having to do with his wealth and income tax filings.
Observers say itÂ’s probably no coincidence a seemingly self-satisfied (and singing!) Obama has emerged in recent weeks, given a string of political victories and signs the economy is improving.
“Their internal polling is probably showing that things have steadied a bit and is giving him a bit of a boost,” said Tobe Berkovitz, a professor at Boston University who specializes in political communications.
Their internal polling is probably showing that??!!
What if I drew the opposite conclusion and said it's probably showing him doing horribly with independents, the same as public polls? And so they had attempted to change the story by projecting "Reaganesque" "optimism"?
Could I get quoted in The Hill for my "probably"?
Of course not; Obama told them which story to write, and they're writing it.
I didn't watch the coverage to see if my optimistic/Reaganesque joke became the reality. If you noticed, please let me know, include the link or the quotes.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa demanded in letter to Attorney General Holder that the Justice Department make Arizona U.S. Attorney's Office Assistant United States Attorney Michael Morrissey available to speak with Committee investigators about his role in and knowledge of Operation Fast and Furious. His supervisor, Patrick Cunningham, has stated he will exercise his Fifth Amendment and refuse to answer any questions pertaining to Operation Fast and Furious – such an assertion is extremely rare and suggests possible criminal culpability on the part of a high ranking Justice Department official. Morrissey, who reported directly to Cunningham's and was intimately involved with Operation Fast and Furious.

Oh, God, no. Just stop the debates now. Seriously, is there anyone watching these things for other than entertainment value? If we're going to have content-free wrestling matches, let's go all the way. Turn the debate stage into a big pool filled with baby oil and send Callista and Ann Romney out in bikinis and have them scratch each other's eyes out.
That at least I'd watch.

I hope the candidates manage to make tonight's debate about Obama's horrifying State of the Union address.
American Enterprise Institute's blog (http://tinyurl.com/7m68wsd) has a story up today about an academic study just published comparing Masscare and Obamacare. In their article, they were predicting it would come up in the debate tonight.
More helpful, perhaps, is this summary of the candidates' positions on health care (http://tinyurl.com/7frxojo). It's from the Kaiser Foundation, but I've been poking through it and it looks well-sourced and I think it's basically fair. (I believe Kaiser is an Obama-leaning foundation.)

Santorum and Paul (who should come in 3rd & 4th -preferably in that order) should both drop out afterwords. Well, Paul should, certainly- Santorum at least has some delegates.
But, really, if either Newt or Mitt win FL (which is Winner-take-all, remember), the race is, essentially, over. They'll have a commanding lead and "momentum." The best anyone unhappy with the winner of FL will be able to hope for is a brokered convention.
And if that's the "best" you're hoping for (as I already kind of am), you're in deep kimchee.

I think from a functional standpoint Romney and Gingrich are equivalent in terms of what their respective presidencies would do re abortion. Gingrich may be more pro life in his heart, but I don't think there'd be much difference between them in terms of federal funding or advancing pro life initiatives.

It never occurred to me that they (including staff) might have had an advance copy to mull over for several hours or so. That's like cheating, or magic tricks.

Nevertheless, I think that in terms of what would happen with abortion in this country, Gingrich and Romney would be roughly the same. I doubt either would be really aggressive about anything other than federal funding issues.

But Zeese doesn't believe that the accusations are just coming from other occupiers. He told BuzzFeed that "a lot of these attacks on us came after we started to call out Democratic operatives that tried to take control of the [Occupy] movement."
To back this up, Zeese sent us a number of links accusing Van Jones -- a green jobs activists pushed out of the Obama Administration amid a controversy over his past radical statements -- his and MoveOn.org of trying to co-opt Occupy, e.g. Van Jones can't occupy us and Occupy Movement tells MoveOn: Back Off!
"We are up against very powerful foes who know how to destroy movements," Zeese said. "Divide people from those who have shown leadership is a key tactic."

My point exactly. However, if you look at Drudge, he's giving big play to an article in National Review Online by Elliott Abrams in which Abrams claims Gingrich said all kinds of things in opposition to Reagan. Abrams, you may recall, was censured by the U.S. District Court of Appeals in D.C. in 1995 for providing false information -- just the kind of hit man to give NRO credibility, or credulity, to be nice. This goes counter to the CSPAN speeches you cite above, plus the testimony of a lot of other witnesses. There was a searing article on another blog (Legal Insurrection) on the dishonest nature of today's shit-flinging by Drudge and Fox .

Yes, no one will score a knockout, and both Newt and Mitt will leave with 15 to 20 delegates. It is all about momentum. You are getting a read on what the 4th largest state in the country, that is a swing state in the general, thinks of these candidates.
Newt need momentum to get past the upcoming caucuses in NV and MI, where Mitt will take most of the delegates. Once we hit Super Tuesday, then we have winner take all states. That could finish the process if one or the other wins the majority of those states.
This is how McCain beat Mitt last time. He didn't get many delegates from FL, but it gave him the momentum to beat Mitt on Super Tuesday where it counted.

Things have gotten very negative. I am going to try to avoid the worst of it as much as I can and look at the neutral/positive reports on the candidates.
Basically, if you want to read something positive about the each of the candidates you have to go to particular sites.
For positive Gingrich stuff it's basically Legal Insurrection, Riehl World view, and DrewM's blog. The Weekly Standard seems to occasionally have positive Newt stuff as well. Overall they seem more balanced than NRO is right now.
For positive Romney stuff it's basically NRO, Hot Air, and I'm sure a lot of the other big blogs (I don't go to many of those).
There is plenty of negative stuff, too. LI is anti Romney. Red State is anti Romney but EE seems to be pushing the "we need a new candidate!" idea (dumb). Hot Air is anti Gingrich.
This site is pretty much anti everyone, but especially Gingrich (and Paul).
I'm trying to convince myself that there is something good or acceptable about each of them, mostly because I am trying to make sure I can get my husband to vote in the general. But it is still necessary to read the counter attacks when these charges get leveled from one camp to the other.

I don't know why anyone would try to compare Obama to Reagan. I mean, Reagan is, like, the....the epiphany of everything that is wrong with the Republican Party. Old. White. Completely uncool. And, like, cruel to animals and stuff, even.
If you want Obama to be cool, you should compare him to cool presidents. And one of the coolest presidents I can think of is Harrison Ford. I mean, wow! Don't you all remember that time he kept all those lesbians from taking over Air Force One? I mean, yes, he was Republican I guess, since he was fighting lesbians, but MAN! Wow.
So you should all totally do more to compare President Obama to President Ford.
And, on an aside, the strangest thing keeps happening. When I got onto Wikipedia to look all this up, someone had the webpage for Ford all wrong. I mean, they had the wrong picture, and had his name as "Gerald." AS IF! So I logged on and fixed it all. But then went I went back later, they chagned it back. I blame those Anon and Mouse hackers.

I think that Florida going early, especially with proportional delegates, is a really good thing. Florida is a very good look at what the general election voter is going to think, and is a great place to get an idea of how well our candidate is going to do in November. Romney's strategy, so far as I'm convinced, was calculated to skip running for the GOP nom altogether and just coast on inevitability so it would be easier for him to pander left during the general.
This guy will, so far as I'm convinced and so far as virtually all his staff has no experience doing anything else in their campaign history, run left in the general and toss the Tea Party under the bus, appeal to moderates by insulting conservatives to their faces, and demoralize the fuck out of everybody.

Yeah. But it also makes for an uphill battle after three plus years of Obama's class warfare stuff.
One thing about his background is that it makes him somewhat predictable in terms of instincts/motivations. But that is also a two-edged sword because it's clear what's good for Mitt is not necessarily what's good for us and he is weaker than most politicians (who are almost always richer and more powerful than the rest of us anyway) at projecting that he understands "regular people."
Someone else said keep reminding about Obama. But I really think for some of us (my husband more than me, but even me to some extent) at some point you hit a WTF moment, decide you're doomed anyway, nothing is going to save you, so why bother?
That's partly Gingrich's appeal to many of us, I think. The idea that he might do one or two bold things that actually help us. Shit, he's the only one who remaining who has a flat tax in his proposals.
Because Romney does not know the Beltway as an insider and because he is not naturally combative against Democrats, I find it nearly impossible to believe he would do anything major to counter them. I think we get four more years of Mitch McConnell and John Boehner style leadership. At least with Newt there's a good chance he will drive Congress to take the fight to the Democrats. He can be bold in that arena because he knows it.

I don't know if he can or not, but he has a much, much better shot than Newt. If Mitt has a 40% chance, Newt's is 20%.
What makes Newt attractive to many Republicans also happen to be things the general electorate either dislike or don't care about.

I don't agree with the percentages you quote. I would say their chances to beat Obama would be about the same at maybe 30 to 40%. In my opinion, in order to beat an incumbent you have to present a stark contrast. Mittens can't do that - Hell, he's the same as Barkypants.
I realize Newt's negatives are high, but that can and would change if he were to win the nomination.

"Can we trade Vermont to Canada for a six pack of Labatt's Blue ???"
You want us to take the progressive ski hill called Vermont? Why do you hate Canada?
We'll give you Quebec, and a six pack, to keep Vermont.

Note a lot of these words, like sanguine, just mean optimistic
Well, it means confident... and BLOODY. Disturbingly appropriate choice of words.

Obama has emerged in recent weeks, given a string of political victories
Really? where are these victories they speak? if this is victory, our hands are too small to hold it.

ABC This Week host Christiane Amanpour proclaimed that Obama's address was "full of sunny optimism, very Reaganesque, on and on about American exceptionalism in many, many instances and full of Kennedyesque encouragement to break a new frontier. That Sputnik moment was remarkable."
On CBS, Evening News anchor Katie Couric touted how political analyst Jeff Greenfield thought it was "down right Reaganesque" and that "some" have argued "this could be his Reagan moment."
Correspondent Andrea Mitchell chimed in: "That's exactly what he was trying to get after and I think he was trying to invoke the optimism, the can-do spirit that brings to mind Ronald Reagan in these settings."
Later in the CBS coverage, Face the Nation host Bob Schieffer reiterated the Reagan comparison: "[Obama's] Reagan moment was when he made that speech in Tucson. But I think he kind of built on that tonight. I thought this speech was something of an extension of that speech."

These people are just horribly embarrassing themselves. Do let me know when the small child comes forth and tells them that "Teh Emperor is NAKED". It will take some of these dolts years (if ever) to realize how they were taken in by this charlatan.
Reagan came to be known as the Great Communicator. The best Barry can hope for is the Great Pretender.

So, when a progg scrunt like Behar calls something "Reaganesque" that's a slam, right?
