— Ace But we're not supposed to say Obama's a socialist. That's crazy.
Here's video of Charlie Rose and Norah O'Donnell talking about this awesome new word. Norah's spin is that people were looking up "socialist" to confirm that Obama isn't one.

Remember repitition is not always bad.
The inherent vice of Capitalism is the unequal sharing of blessings. The inherent virtue of Socialism is the equal sharing of miseries.

BTW, I hate the term "socialism" as defined by today's liberals who do not like the use of the term "communism" because of the 50 era Soviet Union bad PR. And guess what, liberals write the dictionaries and almost all other books.
The one who originated both terms was Karl Marx. Socialism is an intermediate step in the trip to Marx's supposed utopia of communism.
The US is, and has been a socialist State since the 30s when FDR started implementing his socialist programs. SS is socialsim, labor laws are socialism. Virtually every government program there is ow is socialism.
We are ow working towards the "Communist Utopia" envisioned by Marx now. When the US started getting rid of private property we started marching on the road to communism. We started that in the 60s and are now well on the way.
Obama is putting the cap on it now. He is nationalizing industries as we speak. The press just will not use that term.

First, we weren't supposed to call him a socialist at all. They even claimed it was racist. Yet immediately after his election, Newsweek had the "We are all socialists now" cover.
Second, Americans boarded the socialist train at exactly the wrong time. Socialism is dying in Europe and can't sustain itself. Even the anemic growth isn't sustainable.

The U.S. government now controls:
90% of home mortgage lending
90% of college student lending
About 40% of auto lending (most people do not realize that the U.S. owns 75% of Ally Bank, formerly known as GMAC, which has the lion's share of the consumer auto lending market and about 80% of the dealer market, which finances the dealers' purchases of cars from the factory)
These are the only three things for which most people will ever borrow money.

Fascism is a term invented by the Germans in the 30s to differentiate themselves from the Marxists in Russia. They hated the Russians with a passion and needed something to separate them. Read Liberal Fascism by Jonah Goldberg. Very good explanation of the history.

But under today's lights most conservatives define "Fascism" as a trend by the government to take over industry not by nationalizing it, but by regulating every aspect of its operation. The owners may still own it but they have no say-so on how it is run. It is defacto nationalization.

My limousine-liberal Obama fangirl SIL is hosting it at her luxury 5-bedroom ski house at Stowe. I had to de-friend her on Facebook after the election because if the sickening crap she was posting about "My Awesome President." Even worse, she was jumping up and down about Elizabeth Warren winning, and when I told her, congratulations, you now have two useless socialist Senators who want to be President and don't give a crap about you, she went into orbit.
If I say that Obama is a socialist in this crowd, I'll get hammered. One BIL is actually sane and conservative, but at Thanksgiving the rest of the fam was dumping all over him for buying a gun and joining a Tea Party group.
But the husband always tells me I am the one that needs to shut up and put away the politics at family gatherings.

You have two cows.
Communism- The Government takes them and gives you a ration of the milk.
Socialism- The Government taxes the hell out of the milk them and gives it to government bureaucrats, cronies, and their supporters.
Fascism- The Government makes you take care of the cows, but tells you how you will do that in every aspect of the operation. The taxes the hell out of and gives it to government bosses.
The US is currently about 15% Communist, and 50-50 Fascist/Socialist. It adds up to more than 100% because the Fascism and Socialism overlap.

I know a couple that do that. Their "residence" is S. Dakota which has no income tax. The RV and their car is also registered there since registration is nothing in the state. They spend 1/2 the year traveling in the RV and the other 1/2 at their mini-palace of a house in New Mexico. And yet somehow they are S. Dakota residents for tax purposes. Knowing these two, I'm sure what they do is 100% legit. But it's kind of messed up when they spend practically no time in the state where they are "residents".

He heard again the words of ridicule and derision, because the Romans were sore, sore afraid. … He embodies within him the power and the glory Satan cannot break. In the gospel of Matthew when Satan left Jesus … angels came to Jesus and anointed Jesus to preach the word of God. And that word tonight, in the preacher before us, lives and breathes, and so do the angels who stand by him.”

Once you subject liberal programs to the criteria of public goods, you see that many of them fail to meet that criteria or meet it in ways that are reflective only of subjective preferences on the part of those staffing the various bureaucracies. The greatest success of Leftist propaganda over the past century has been in blurring these distinctions.
But, Republican candidates seem to lack the ability to talk about these distinctions coherently and so fall prey to the media swarm around terms like "socialism", which is too bad because there is a very rich philosophical discussion around these terms going back ages which can be used to rebut the idea that every policy the Left would like to enact is analogous to the government providing roads and bridges. At the very least, GOP candidates could say "We don't object to the government providing goods that everyone can use, what we object to is the government picking specific classes of citizens and providing things only they can use" and then go on to make the case that the first part of that sentence doesn't imply nationalization of industries because that would require violating people's right to private property and free association.

The right needs to start fighting the media and stop letting the left get away with hijacking terminology for their purposes. I'd love to see PACs underwrite public education ads.

I was talking to a Social Studies teacher the other day about her civics unit, which uses an NYT article to essentially say that conservatives like old policies whereas liberals are for freedom and progress. Yeah, I think this has a lot of truth. I know when I was younger, that's how I thought of socialism. Turns out that in practice, it's not really that. Part of the problem is that young people generally haven't had any experience in making difficult decisions regarding scarce resources, which is what adult life and capitalism are about.
And as for the idea that it was the "wrong people" in charge, I'd bet dollars to doughnuts that everyone in the leadership of the Russian Communist movement, even Stalin, was a fuck of a lot smarter than Obama and any of the dipshits who support him. The leadership of the kibbutz movement in Israel certainly were, as were the East Germans.
If they could not make it work, the US Left certainly can't.

that's taught in the skrewls and the twisting of the language by the
Prog/Coms in the MFM, I'd guess there are precious few who would
understand what that word really means any more.

Capitalism defined in a single image by a California teacher's union:
"A new animated video released by the California Federation of Teachers shows the rich “1 percent” urinating on and stealing money from the less fortunate and middle class. The purpose of the video is to explain “economic inequality” and the need for wealthy people to pay their “fair share of taxes.”

Since this was from 2000 your point doesn't stand as the bubble started several years later.
This is what makes me crazy about conservatives and the sub-prime debacle....CRA was around from the 1970s. In the 80s and 90s there was no sub-prime craziness. Then in the 2000s, under a Republican president, the sub-prime shit hit the fan. And what is to blame? CRA, a 30 year piece of legislation. Let's ignore the 0% interest rates set by Greenspan. Let's ignore the "owenrship society" pushed by Bush. Let's ignore the CDOs that magically turned junk status notes into AAA rated notes. Let's ignore the MSM that for 5 years pushed the "real estate only goes up" meme. Nope, none of that had anything to do with the bubble/crash. It was all because of CRA.

Govt mandates cars have to have seat belts. Therefore the govt controls the auto industry. If regulating = control then yeah the govt controls 100% of everything if that's how you want to look at it.
Well, yes. Sort of. Your attempt at reducto ad absurdum (sp?) notwithstanding.
The FEDERAL government, does not set speed limits. They can tell States "set the speed limit on road X to Y, or you don't get sweet, sweet government money" but the State Government actually sets the speed limits (and can be over-ridden by local government in the right circumstances).
But, yes, the Government does control (just about) everything. Welcome to the party. Do you really think the Federal government should even have the power to decide whether my car has a seat belt? Seriously? Should the Federal government have the power to tell my local school what it can or cannot serve in the cafeteria?

You're about this close (holds fingers close together) to me deciding you're a troll and telling you to F off.
I wasn't "ignoring" anything in the subprime bubble. I was pointing out- relevant to our conversation- that CRA and it associated regulations give the Federal Government complete control (or close enough that the difference is negligible) over lending- especially (in the case of CRA) over mortgage lending. You're the one who came back trying to disprove that statement by referring to "Conventional" mortgages- completely ignoring the subprime mortgages.

I'd say the feds don't so much control everything as bribe people into accepting their rules. The local school board could tell the feds to fuck off and set its own cafeteria menu. But it wants the federal money so it gives in. Same with states and speed limits.

It was all because of CRA.
You need to do your homework. It really was all because of the CRA. Billy Jeff Cliton put the teeth into that POS law that Jimmah Cahtah stupidly signed. It took a few years, but it eventually did what it was designed to do: collapse our economy, with some help from our enemies.

Right you are. It was all because of the CRA. By the way was Reagan part of this great conspiracy too? Cuz he had 8 years to get rid of CRA.
So the 0% interest rates set by Greenspan (a Reagan appointee) had nothing to do with it? The CDOs had nothing to do with it. People buying 10 houses in Phoenix and Las Vegas with the intention of flipping them 2 months later for a 20% profit had nothing to do with it. Nope. It was all Clinton and Carter's fault.

Point of order, Tsar, we're getting the blame no matter what (or did you forget that a plurality of voters are still blaming Bush?).
The proper use of Let It Burn is, "Step back and don't grab the bucket labeled 'water' that actually contains gasoline."

Me too, though not really due to Boehner's purge although it's an additional sign and symptom. The GOP has at best looked the other way or at worst assisted in the cover ups of Obama's radical background, Fast and Furious, and Benghazi (to name only a few).
They have refused acknowlege what is happening to and in our country today, to spell out the nature of this administration and to educate the public. They don't do anything about the media bias (suicidal, IMO). Since the GOP has an obvious motivation to do all of these things for their own benefit not to mention for the good of the country, but they haven't, I've concluded they are enabling Obama and the Dems. They sure aren't representing me.

If socialism worked in the real world, I'd be a socialist. I follow the logic and go where it takes me. But, based on historical experience, socialism doesn't work and--since it's based on false premises regarding value and innate characteristics of human nature--it cannot work, ever, so I'm not a socialist.
Glad to know the word is finally coming out in the open. It disgusted me no end that 'mainstream' Republicans would refuse to call out Obama for what he is, what he's always been.
As a heads-up, socialist states are typically ruled by one party. Dissent is...discouraged. Voting is a formality with a preordained outcome. Also (and most importantly), socialism is at complete odds with the US Constitution in purpose and specific intent, both word and spirit. An American citizen is duty-bound to resist a socialist state.

If you're 'fortunate' enough to need and get a loan modification, the feds take over your mortgage. The original lender still services it, i.e. that's who you send the payments to but the govt owns it. Oh and they force you to use them as the insurer too for the home owners' policy...

This week a slew of polls came out that show majority of Democrats view Socialism positively and soon after Obama was elected in 2008, Hillary, Howard Dean, the entire brain trust of the party were making remarks like, We need some Socialism or Why do people say Socialism is a bad word. So its not like these people don't know what the Dictionary story means.
The truth is they just don't know how to spin it. O'Donnel's statement is almost nonsensical.
"I find it so interesting that Socialism is the number one word, because Obama was 'Labeled' as a Socialist so people wanted to see the actual definition. I find that so interesting".
What the hell does that mean if we assume she is sincere, which she is not?
I find it so very, very interesting that people looked up the definition of "Birth Certificate" because of the Birther accusations. I just find that mind blowingly fascinating.
Charlie Rose hit the eject button on the segment by declaring "I'm definitely not a Socialist".
Eject!
