23 Any suggestions of things to start as "our traditions?" If someone else suggests them, they're not really your traditions. Most of ours revolve around pre-Christmas stuff (the kids helping decorate the tree, etc.). The main one we have for the kids on Xmas day is that Santa brings their Michigan presents. Except he won't this year, because Grampa forgot to put them out where Santa could get to them- so the USPS will have to deliver them on Friday.

Take a picture of young AMDG and create a tree ornament out of it for First Christmas.

If you live in the southwest, it's tamales for breakfast (but not that store-bought shit).

40 Posted by: AllenG (DedicatedTenther) Ah, F It. at December 24, 2013 11:55 AM (PYAXX) True, but a tradition has to start somewhere. And with a nice clean break at hand, now's as good of a time as any. Especially with a kid too young to form memories, so everything from here on will be "that's how it's always been." The reading and homemade ornaments seem to be our style.

48 If someone else suggests them, they're not really your traditions.

They will be, after you do them twice.

If you have a camera with a tripod/timer or a guest/neighbor, take a picture of the three of you.  Repeat every Christmas, adding family members as necessary.

It's a pain in the butt, but my parents have been doing this for several decades and it's quite impressive to line them all up for the grandkids to laugh at our hair.

Yep, I like the  idea of just doing something you can repeat year after year.  It doesn't have to be a grand gesture, just something that will add meaning to it each time.

69 This is the 1st Christmas in over 40 years that we have no kids down for the Holidays.  Everyone is traveling with their families this year.  We have designated New Year's Eve as Dinner and Presents Day.  As she had a child already when we met, this will be the first time we have celebrated the holidays as just the two of us.

My wife is unhappy about it.  Very.  She likes having the kids down.

I feel strangely calm and relaxed.  Church tonight.  Our presents tomorrow.  No arguments with moonbats.  Dinner, presents, arguments, and families in a week.

Pretty sweet.

70 I'm pretty sure that it's in the Texas Constitution that the only persons authorized for in-home tamale making are groups of at least 5 sisters in Mexican households. The rest of us have to either get them from our Mexican sister coworkers, from the tamale trucks on the side of the road, or the woman roaming H-E-B with a styrofoam cooler and a Santa hat.

79 Thanks a lot assholes. Beretta has eliminated Virginia from its short list of states to move its company because anti-gun Democrat Terry McAuliffe was elected governor. The firearms manufacturer made the decision to scratch Virginia off the list after the McAuliffe campaign fixated on restricting gun owners’ rights after receiving over $1 million in campaign donations from billionaire New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg. “The anti-gun ads that McAuliffe ran in northern Virginia were particularly offensive,” Jeff Reh, general counsel of Beretta USA, told me in an interview. “And the fact that he could gain a voting advantage by doing so caused us additional concern.”

They also say my chimney is too short, since it doesn't come above the roof line. That was brought up during the inspection actually, all the chimneys on the 2 story houses around here are like that for some reason. (The chinmney guy seemed to think that's not true, but in fairness, if you stand on my roof and look around the two story houses in plane sight don't actually have chimneys, but up the road is one with the same problem.) That's more of a challenge though to get rip roaring fires, not a safety issue.

Either you'll be living in this house forever OR you'll want to sell it at some point. Either way, the re-line is a better investment for not much more money. Well then, may you and yours have a very Merry Texas Christmas! Same to you.

And I'm not sure we have the cash. We may just have to wait some more. Which I guess is fine in the long run. We're halfway though winter, and the earliest they could do the reline is the end of January (if we're lucky.) At that point I'd probably rather have a new driveway (Which also needs work.)

Posted by: tsrblke, PhD(c) No Really! at December 24, 2013 12:14 PM (GaqMa)

IIRC, chimney heights are usually subject to code requirements.  From what I gathered when I was installing my wood stove, the problem with a short chimney is that hot (as in burning red hot) ashes can exit the chimney and land on your roof thus potentially causing a roof fire.  A higher stack lessens the probability of this.  If you plan to resell your house, check in with the local building inspector (using a nom de plume).

135 So yesterday we went here
http://www.pwcamp.algona.org/nativity.html

And the nativity scene was lovely and the information about the P.O.W camp was more interesting; the Geneva Conventions allow for the rank and file to be allowed to work and keep some of the money for themselves to spend at the canteen.  Most of the prisoners weren't Nazis at all, and loved to get out to work on farms; and many of them spent their funds on art supplies at the canteens and left paintings and poems and things now on display at the museum, with 1990s-2000s pictures of their wives and families.

And a surprising number of them emigrated to the U.S. after they were released, because they were treated so well here, although maybe not so surprising when you realized their hometowns were in the Russian-occupied zones.

And to the museum, and it's your typical small-town storefront operation, but the guy at the front desk had researched most of the "local people who served in WWII" stories himself and was very enthusiastic (pumped my Deutschfreund for some geographical information; there was a Stalag that housed American POWs not far from where he lives).

137 Posted by: Hrothgar at December 24, 2013 12:29 PM (o3MSL) Eh, the house was inspected when we bought it. Currently there are no required building inspections by the city. The cost to extend it is not exactly inexpensive, and if we don't rebrick it, it'll probably look weird. The house was built in 1965, lots of things in it are grandfathered into the code. Plus, worst case is the standard real estate contract here actually specially notes that fireplaces are not guaranteed to be functional unless specifically written into the contract! So while a future buyer *could* walk away, I suspect they won't over a non-functional fireplace.

138 "Any suggestions of things to start as 'our traditions?'"

Turn off the TV. Unplug the Internet, if only for a few hours.
Then read to the child. Read the Christmas story. Tell your child about the mom and dad who were alone, in a strange town, with no place to stay, and how they had to hunt around for the poorest of shelter from the cold, and about the little baby who came into world greeted by animals and shepherds, to give His life for us. If the little one is a little too little to comprehend, do it anyway: it's never too soon to start a good habit, and the child will remember the sound of your voice and the love it expresses, even if the sense comes only later.

Then, when you've read the little one to sleep, you and your spouse can have a hot toddy and snuggle. No better way to spent a wintry December night.

Merry Christmas!

Any suggestions of things to start as "our traditions?" We always do a beautiful sit down meal Christmas Eve, tradutional foods of my moms heritage, same one every year. If my mom dies before I learn to make it myself I will be devastated; I help out every year, keep getting a little better at it. Then we do a sort of music and spoken word thing of the nativity story, which is really just an excuse to sing all our fave Christmas songs. When I was a kid we got to open one present, my parents chose, before going to bed. Next day is more relaxed, regular breakfast food and just hang in pajamas as long as we can. I'm sure you'll come up with something great, perfect for your family. Don't sweat it and God bless!

Sandwich Shop Fires Its Employees — By Email — Right Before Christmas
CHICAGO (CBS) — Employees of a River North sandwich shop received the ultimate lump of coal right before Christmas: They were all fired.
The news came impersonally, via email on Sunday, with a notice that the nearly 20 workers at SnarfÂ’s sub shop, 600 W. Chicago Ave., would be terminated, effective Monday Dec. 23. Seventeen other SnarfÂ’s employees also got the electronic boot. A company spokesperson confirms that.

Many of those terminated took part in the one-day restaurant strike earlier this month demanding higher wages.

207 So... the company says they're closing due to "declining business" but that they're renovating and will re-open next year. I call BS. Several fast-food places in my area have "closed for renovations" in the last year. When the opened up, they all had the same employees as when they closed. There was never any question of "will I get my job back..." Which tells me that, yes, they were fired for striking. It is probably ALSO true that the location was going to close due to declining sales, but they probably took the opportunity to fire the ingrates. Also, I wonder how much of "declining sales" was due to having the kind of employees who believe that a) they are owed a job and b) that that job should pay them 30k/yr for slinging a sub?

208 Any suggestions of things to start as "our traditions?" (Mass and presents are already there.) Posted by: AMDG at December 24, 2013 11:53 AM (t7OO0) How "Jesus-y" do you want them to be? You could create some traditions to remind you to focus on "the Reason for the Season." Examples: Birthday party or special feast item in honor of Jesus, special gift to someone your family wishes to bless like Jesus has blessed us, reading the Christmas story in Matthew or Luke (or John 1 if you're feeling extra theological), Advent candle wreath or other light to honor the "Light of the world," visit a living Nativity scene. Other fun things: Hot chocolate on Christmas morning, driving around and looking at lights, Christmas music or play presentations, fun movies, caroling, etc. As other commenters have pointed out, you will naturally create your own traditions, especially as your Christmas memories build up from year to year.

209 for Ms Jackson (Dope) and others concerned about guns:

1 - "Beginning on April 6, 1994, Hutus began slaughtering the Tutsis in the African country of Rwanda. As the brutal killings continued, the world stood idly by and just watched the slaughter. Lasting 100 days, the Rwanda genocide left approximately 800,000 Tutsis and Hutu sympathizers dead."

2 - "Men, women, and children were murdered. Since bullets were expensive, most Tutsis were killed by hand weapons, often machetes or clubs. Many were often tortured before being killed. Some of the victims were given the option of paying for a bullet so that they'd have a quicker death."

That author there, under the pen name George Washington, is an excitable ass. The commenters are just as bad, caterwauling about every potential disaster in the West (by extension, japan. ) They cross the line of not just describing remote threats into actively hoping for catastrophe.

That author had written articles immediately after the event claiming that it would end Japan and no food would ever be produced there again.

I don't know how to describe that mindset; it's not just a leftist one but one that loves seeing disaster strike the parts of the West and wallowing in it as some brave act of defiance. Nihilist Dramatica ?

Same poll said 62% of respondents agreed with his overall job. I wouldn't count him out for re-election. If 62% agrees with his agenda, would 20% of that 62% simply not vote for him because he likes to party? Election is in 2014.

Some speculation is that the Cowboys have already decided to sit Romo, but don't want the Peagles to be sure enough of that to design their defensive scheme around Kyle Orton.

Because, for one thing it has possibly the greatest line from any movie in Hollywood history, I.e."I serve strong drinks to men who want to get drunk fast and I don't need any characters to give the place atmosphere." And of course it is fun to watch George Bailey wise up when he learns that his retarded uncle's screw up is going to get him sent to Pound Me In The Ass prison. 301 What's it like being part of the most hateful fanbase in sports history? It's the demographic of sports fans in Philly. Young men, at the prime of their immaturity, with an average BOC of at least .25. Older folks have better things to do with their money, and younger can't afford the price. I'll never forget my first Eagles game. Gratis tickets. As I approach the stadium the first warning signs appeared; empty liquor bottle here, then another one there. Closer in every wall was covered, then every trash container was filled to overflowing, then all around the trash container every inch was covered with bottles neatly arrayed. I had never experienced sitting in a cloud of ethanol vapor before. Mixed with a major hit of testosterone.

Maybe I'll have to start buying Barilla whole wheat pasta or tri-color pasta to get some pasta of color into the mix.

Or better, maybe I should institute pasta shaming sessions in the kitchen. Round up all that white pasta and make it engage in self-criticism. This has real promise.
