Michigan and Arizona Results
— andy

Polls close at 9pm Eastern in both primaries.

Fox News coverage starts at 8:45. As a reminder, Michigan's delegates are awarded by congressional district, while Arizona is winner-take-all.

5 If AZ does winner take all they are in violation of the RNC rules that were voted in pre-election.

6 In an interesting turn of events, Michelle Bachmann is leading Rick Perry for 5th place in Michigan, according to early returns.

If you were to fill that crater with dollar bills, we would only be 0.03% toward paying off our federal debt.

So, yes, we are going to need more meteor strikes.  Or our wives are going to have start paying us more for sex.

This has been and continues to be a hardcore full-contact primary season.
For all the emo-weeping about a "coronation" or "the fix being in", it's undeniably been a back and forth battle.
Go Romney. A sweep tonight is huge. A split is meh. A double upset would be brutal.

Doesn't matter. There is already an official protest on that score for one of the other primaries who had also lost half of their delegates. The half delegate punishment was for moving primary. going winner take all calls for having the RNC award them as intended and overriding the State party..

32 I can't think of a more dreadful slate of candidates for a major party to run in my lifetime. Hell, even in 84 the Democrats had a few decent folks running in the primary. The Republicans of 2012? Good god. Romney- As far as can be determined by his record, his policies are pretty much exactly the same as the current administration....except that he won't be checked by a hostile congress. Santorum- Ignoring the whole "Ned Flanders from an evil dimension" aspect of his character, here's a guy who favors more state controls over individual citizens, and is openly hostile to 1/3 of the Republican party (in fairness, it's my third so I'm a tad touchy about the nitwit). Newt- Guy is nuts. Great ideas, tendency to blow things up. Kind of guy I wouldn't trust with my car, let alone a nuke, you know? Ron Paul- Except for his tendency to get cozy with nazis and 9/11 truthers, it's a crazy enough world where he seems the less crazy of them all. We have such a bad crop, that voting for the loon seems a great deal less crazy than the alternatives. Ugh. Just, ugh. McCain and Dole are even looking pretty good now. I really have no idea how we get ourselves out of this mess. SMOD seems pretty damn sweet right now.

108 I'm starting to really detest Santorum. The self-righteous little prick is dead set on destroying our only viable candidate. 274 I live in a suburb of Detroit.  In the 2008 election our precinct was 238 for McCain, 423 for Obama.  I was Republican voter #111 @ 5:15 PM out of 145 total voters.  (You had to "declare" what ballot you wanted, we a local issue as well.) I think that means there are a lot of people are trying to subvert the Republican primary because I have a hard time believing that we are getting such a high turnout for a primary compared to a general.  My husband thinks that perhaps it is because a lot of people have decided enough is enough and are changing their affiliation.  I pray he is correct.  (Oh and I am proud to say my son was voter #1 this morning.  He was on his way to work and had to wait for them to fire up the machines.  Good boy.)

Maybe.  After all, many people are voting out of fear.  They are, in essence, playing not to lose.  When you play not to lose, there is no way you can win.  Because you've compromised who you are, what you offer, and how you serve others.  That's what a lot of people need to realize.  Not Obama isn't a winning strategy.

And who, exactly, is going to be the savior who airdrops in at the last moment to save us all, in heroic fashion?  The bench is a bit short at the moment.  Team R has some potential future stars, but non that are ready for the bright lights of a presidential campaign (Jindal, Ryan), and a bunch of could've-been-contendahs! candidates who chose to stay out, e.g. Daniels and Pence.  Since you want this thing, this brokered convention, what is your preferred outcome?

368 President Obama got the opportunity to trumpet his campaign season theme of the revival of American auto companies and to court his needed union supporters in one shot in an address to the United Auto Workers today. “And you know why I knew this rescue would succeed?” Obama said at the union’s Washington convention. “It wasn’t because of anything the government did. It wasn’t just because of anything management did. It was because I believed in you. “I placed my bet on American workers,” the president continued, according to prepared remarks released by the White House. “And I’d make that same bet again any day of the week. Because three years later, that bet is paying off for America. Three years later, the American auto industry is back.” Obama told the union members “you make me proud” and said the auto bailout helped save a million jobs in their manufacturing sector.

If President Obama carries only those states where he had a net positive approval rating in 2011 (e.g. Michigan where he is up 48 percent to 44 percent), Obama would lose the 2012 election to the Republican nominee 323 electoral votes to 215.

392 Romney is currently up by 4% with 61% of the vote in, but huge chunks are still missing from Oakland County (where he's horsewhipping Santorum by a 20% margin in one of the most populous GOP counties in the state) and Macomb County (where he's winning by a commanding 10%).  The final margin seems like it will be somewhere around 5-6%.

Given the tie/Santorum-lean of the most recent polls, that's a big vindication for Romney.

Not saying this to needle you, but it's exactly the opposite.  The margin for Romney is only going to increase from here on out.  As I just wrote in #413, the major tranche of votes that have yet to report are from the Detroit suburbs where Romney is crushing Santorum.  Particularly Oakland County, which is only about 35% in right now and where Romney leads by 20%.  That margin is going to hold as the county fully reports, which is going to add a massive edge to his margin.

Ironically the LDS church which are social conservatives in general does support abortion only in the case of rape and incest.

>>>Texas decided to bar the WomenÂ’s Health Program funding from abortion providers, including Planned Parenthood, in May of last year. Almost immediately, the Obama administration threatened to pull Medicaid from Texas if funding wasnÂ’t reinstated for the abortion giant. Texas refused, and in turn, the Obama administration decided last week to yank the annual $40,000,000 Texas received for its Medicaid program, beginning in March. This also results in another $17,000,000 loss to Planned Parenthood of Texas.

Obama showed his true agenda by pulling Medicaid from Texas. He would rather have thousands of low-income families struggling to obtain health care rather than see funding pulled and reallocated from the largest abortion-committing organization in the nation. <<<<<<

Posted by: BurtTC at February 28, 2012 06:22 PM (Gc/Qi)

463 FWIW, Romney has moved out to a 5% lead now with 68% in.  As I said, the weight of Oakland (51%-29%!  And that's 100,000 total GOP votes in that county, it's not some UP nothingburger), Macomb, Wayne, Livingston, and Washtenaw is crushing Santorum.

It actually may end up as a 7% victory for Romney instead of 5-6% if current trends hold.  And because he did so surprisingly well in the UP's 1st congressional district (which includes not just the peninsula itself, but also the Northern MI counties that all went Romney), he might end up winning every district in the state except for the 2nd, 3rd, and 6th.  That would send him home with a supermajority of MI's delegates despite its proportional allocation.

Well it would be a significant majority of the commenters (and front-page posters!) at Hot Air, which FEELS like the same thing for those of us who live our conservative political lives online, y'know?  (Such are the wages of living in a blue state surrounded by liberal douchebags.)

Anyway, it would've sucked.  It would've been genuinely painful. I've got enough pain in my life right now, I didn't need anymore.  And, blessedly, for one night my wish was granted.

Now -- on to the Super Tuesday Romney Massacre!  The cycle of recriminations shall begin once again!

501 Abortion isn't just black and white. There's a shitload of grey areas and definitions of what constitutes legal abortions. On a state by state basis, abortion is regulated based on practice. But a majority does accept some aspects of abortion or all aspects of abortions.

It can't be explained.  It's an emotional argument - not a logical one. Therefore, it's useless to argue with someone that holds that position.  They will keep citing polls which are meaningless and will never provide a substantive, thoughtful or reasoned argument.   Waste.of.time.

Kaitian - I agree with you in one respect - this election should be about the economy.  But, your issue with abortion is out of place in this debate.  You are trying to make an emotional argument about an issue that no one is going to agree on.  As a conservative, you need to learn to be a critical thinker - otherwise, you tend to take on the appearance of a liberal.

Posted by: Not an Artist at February 28, 2012 06:45 PM (Lo/3Q)

559 Just speaking in terms of political speechmaking, is it just me, or is Santorum in a whole other league than Romney? Santorum gets the cadences right, he knows how to rise and fall, to infuse emotion, all that stuff. Romney screws up good lines despite the crowd trying to help him, and his spontaneous reactions to the crowd yelling...yikes. I don't agree with either of them so there's no blinders on, but man, it's like watching a major leaguer and a minor leaguer...except the minor leaguer has 8 all-stars on the field with him (money, organization) and the major leaguer is trying to manage himself, not always well. I say that, and still, Romney is going to take this thing. The GOP just doesn't do it any other way. Not even this year.

Posted by: A Liberal AoSHQ Reader, Really! at February 28, 2012 06:46 PM (ZiYQG)

No, we're not.  "Liberal AoSHQ Reader" is pretty much the only avowed lefty commenter here that we tolerate (and even like!) because he/she is polite and reasonable and can be talked to in a civil discourse.

You, on the other hand, are (in the immortal words of George Bluth, Sr.) "just a turd out there on field, really."

Santorum within 3%.  Not like he's going to close that gap any further, but he's not really exceeding Rick's 38% plus Newt's 7%.  I can't imagine a significant number of Newt's supporters breaking for Willard.

I don't think Mitt's got this thing locked up going forward

588 i thought Ricks speech tonight was good. When he is on message he is very ,very good. too bad he always takes the bait with gotcha questions

589 643 @639 Why would I? I'm Romney first then ABO if it's not Romney. It's certainly a better option than the Marxist in Chief.

Because one has about as much chance of winning as the other.  I don't support Raptor Jesus.  I don't plan on supporting Raptor Jesus--even in his other forms.  There's no need to pretend that the solution, though, is the pro-choice-f'-social-cons Specter route.

He didn't win (the Presidency) back when Republicans ignored him.  He didn't win back when they hated him.  He couldn't get into the high single digits if I remember correctly.  He couldn't even win as a Democrat when he became a Democrat.  That guy doesn't win.  Do I think a guy who makes a point of informing others of his problems with contraception will win also?  No.  Neither does a guy who takes the positions and attitude of Specter.

590 @Jeff B: There can only be one. :-) Dude, you must be relieved. You of all people know what would have happened if Romney lost by .0001% tonight, delegate count be damned. But man, can't someone teach the guy how to give a victory speech?

Posted by: A Liberal AoSHQ Reader, Really! at February 28, 2012 07:12 PM (ZiYQG)

591 @648 Sounds a lot like Joe Biden.

Posted by: Kaitian at February 28, 2012 07:13 PM (et2m1)

592 I had sort of hoped competition from Santorum might inspire Mittens to show some heartfelt conviction or put forth some real principles. But, no, he just had his SuperPAC unleash a flood of attack ads.

I like Mitt Romney much less than I did when this process started.

I agree - unfortunately I like them all less than when the process started.  Not one of them has grown in my estimation.  At various points along the path I've wanted to like different candidates, and then ... I just can't like  any of them.  However I'll vote ABO.

596 Compared to each other, and to others we pine for, the GOP candidates are all seriously flawed to most of us in one way or another. Compared to Obama however, they all look like a better choice.

597 Mitt won Detroit.

Posted by: Mirror-Universe Mitt Romney at February 28, 2012 07:41 PM (8XumG)

598 Looking at the results and comparing them to 2008, I would say that the voters who didn't vote the first time around ended up voting for Romney. So far at 91%, there were at least 67,493 more voters today vs 2008. The difference between Romney's 2008 count to his 2012 is 54,661 voters. Santorum pretty much ended up consolidating most of the voters that turned out for McCain and Huckabee.

600 Congrats to Ace, his guy won tonight. And he's gonna be made to own every stupid thing Romney says and does from now on!

601 So we have our nominee. The Republican electorate should be embarrassed by how easily it was led to and fro by the MFM.

Still here we are. Romney must be elected. Obama must be rejected.

Btw, if you watched CNN's post mortem of the primaries, they openly discussed mitt's weaknesses one of which he thinks he can make up by strategically recruiting a particular VP.

606 Well at least Rick did succeed in getting over 50% of the democrat vote.  Those robo calls telling dems to - vote for Rick because Romney is a union hater - worked.

What do all the Santorum supporters think of their "true conservative" on that one?

Posted by: Evan at February 29, 2012 12:22 AM (N80tW)

607 Never mind that my actual governing record in Massachusetts delivered exactly the opposite of these things.

Have you looked at the actual record or are you going with opposition "research".

As Gov. of MA taxes were not raised they were even lowered some - the only thing that went up were fees (a tax on use of government services).  Size of state government was reduced by combining redundant agencies and putting a freeze on new hires.  MA was bleeding jobs when Romney took over and he reversed job loss in the state and turned the trend positive.  Finally the budget went from being 3 billion in the hole to 2 billion surplus.

So please pay more attention - this is important stuff.  Lots of things said about Romney that are not even close to the truth.  I've researched his record well and for the most part think he is great!  Glad to see both wins tonight.

What are you, like 12 years old?

Posted by: Paul A'Barge at February 29, 2012 09:12 AM (dGE7b)

612 @660 - Hey ACE was a Perry supporter - he can handle it.

As a Romney guy, I wonder who you support other than Mitt?

The pro union "conservative" that has opened a new and stupid front on contraception.  The guy who was not even organized enough to get on the ballot of VA.

Or the Moon Man who has the ethics of Clinton mixed with progressive views of Woodrow Wilson and attacker of capitalism.

Will Romney say some stupid stuff - yes, all politicians do at times - even Reagan.  But, will Mitt even come close to his current competitors in the stupid comments arena - very doubtful.
