Miday Open Thread/Libya Link Dump
— DrewM

You had to know it was coming, didn't you?

Here's some reading on Libya that might be interesting:

Cherry picking intelligence
?

The changing threat environment.

We went with the cheap private protection package in Libya
. That worked out well. (via a good Twitter follow....Jeff Emanuel)

And related enough: US Marines training for embassy contingencies might be in danger of a damaging cut in funding because of sequestration. (via another good Twitter follow, Robert Caruso)

Mitt Romney has an Op-ed on President Foreign Policy's foreign policy failures.

Hysterically enough, longtime Romney shill Jen Rubin isn't happy with it. She wants Mitt to say he'll ask Congress for a de facto declaration of war on Iran. Related, Jen Rubin is bat-shit crazy.

Unrelated: You can still buy my Electoral College map app. Make your state by state predictions and share them via facebook and Twitter. You can make as many predictions as you want and post them often as events (such as SCOAMF lies and the debates) warrant.

iPhone/iPad.

Android.

Kindle Fire.

And yet our media betters tell us daily what a bad few weeks Romney has had.  Don't they know that when Romney wins in a landslide that what shred of any credibility they had will go along with JEF.

Between an imploding middle east, F&F, economy, etc. how any rational  person can justify and vote for SCOAMF is beyond me.

18 The BBC piece: Both US and British diplomats in Benghazi came under attack from suspected Islamist militants in June, as did the International Committee of the Red Cross. Britain then closed down its permanent presence there that month, moving staff back to the capital Tripoli. ---------- So it looks like the British actually gave a flip about their people, unlike our fine young president, who cares sooooo much.

Did you read the Op-Ed?  That didn't have much (if any) place in it.  His foreign policy is very Americo-centric.  Strengthen our ties with our allies (both nations and individuals) to support and protect them.  Strengthen our Economy to provide more "oomph" for our "Soft Power" (embargoes, sanctions, etc.).  Strengthen our Military to provide the physical back up in case the Soft Power doesn't work.

42 Unrest may not work against an incumbent, unless there's a crystal clear depiction that the unrest occurs because of the incumbent's incompetence. We wouldn't want to "change horses in midstream." In a nation with citizens who have not learned critical thinking skills, the only instinct they know is to seek stasis; they are indistinct from horses who stay in the barn engulfed in flames, or the people who don't have the sense to evacuate when they live in a bowl and there's a Category 5 hurricane headed at them.

52 The Jets and troubled cornerback Aaron Berry agreed to a two-year deal, according to his agent, Audie Attar. Berry, who played for the Lions previously, is coming off a three-game suspension for violating the NFLÂ’s personal conduct policy. Berry was arrested twice in Pennsylvania this summer. The former undrafted free agent had a chance to be a starter for the Lions this season before his arrests led to his release. Berry was arrested in June under suspicion of DUI and announced he would enter the leagueÂ’s substance-abuse program. In July he was accused of pointing a gun at three people in a Harrisburg, Pa. parking lot. He was arrested on three charges of simple assault. The Jets brought Berry in Friday for a visit along with several other cornerbacks as they try to fill the void left by Darrelle RevisÂ’ season-ending ACL tear. I real upstanding citizen. 73 Look: No one told Romney to write an op ed about the Middle East. If the trump-all concern is what will play in Ohio, NH, NV, and WI, then why spend time on the op ed at all? Or is it possible we could have a candidate that can walk and chew bubble gum at the same time?

That said, this is the key passage from Rubin:

> What is missing from the op-ed is a clear set of policy differences he has with the president and an indictment of the president’s ”engage the Muslim World” strategy that failed so horrifically.

Right. If Romney *is* going to opine on the Middle East and thus dilute the "all economy, all the time" message, then he needs to make it count.

Don't throw a half-hearted punch--especially since it gives the media a chance to fire at Romney and thus avoid the current jackasses in the room (F&F and the Middle East). If you want to take a swing, put some oomph into it.

And it's intellectual dishonesty, Drew, to equate Congressional authorization for a use of force as "de facto declaration of war."

Thought for the Day:

The Egyptian Embassy attack was a terrorist attack too.

"Connecting the dots", what happened was that as the 9/11 anniversary came up, somebody surfed the web for videos that insult Mohammed and aired what they found on Egyptian TV on 9/10 (or was it the day before?) - in order to get an angry mob riled up for a "demonstration" at the embassy.  Egyptian TV is probably controlled by the govt there, and that same govt did not provide security for the US Embassy. IIRC, the same group demonstrating are the guys in power.

The Embassy was aware of what was going on, which is why they put out that desperate statement beforehand (the one that Mitt Romney criticized).

The whole thing was orchestrated - inciting a mob to attack the US Embassy in Egypt on 9/11 - and apparently with the blessing of the govt (if they didn't organize it themselves).

This, from the govt that Obama said he was "relieved" to see take power.

Pretty sure we're already covertly aiding fighting Iran in Syria to some extent based on extrapolation from news articles.  And they publically announced something as well.

This is the simplest form of basic diplomacy: carrot and stick.  Not that a president needs authorization to attack Iran, he doesn't.   Which nobody has even disputed since I pointed it out.

The idea is to credibly threaten Iran with a credible threat, like a piece of paper in the form of an 'authorization,' in order to gain compliance with the tatters of the NP regime.   If anyone thinks an Iranian war with Israel will not immediately entangle the US, look at the deployment of western navies in and around the Persian Gulf.

We're talking about a piece of paper man.  Not the actual war.  Paper.
