Mitt Just Got Real
— CAC

I believe we need a new status.

Romney's speech last night is getting a lot of praise, and the key line, the MJGR, comes in at the 06:28 mark:

If he keeps up his rhetoric and argument in this vein, it will be a lot easier for distrustful Republicans to jump, AND win over the independents. No need to "move to the middle" when the middle is waking up. John McCain II he is not.

H/T to eman for coining MJGR. Update [ace]:

If the answer were “yes” to those questions, then President Obama would be running for re-election based on his achievements…and rightly so. But because he has failed, he will run a campaign of diversions, distractions, and distortions. That kind of campaign may have worked at another place and in a different time. But not here and not now. It’s still about the economy …and we’re not stupid."

It will do all it can to ignore Romney, unless he says something stupid and/or controversial, while singing the praises of Obama the Great, promoting class envy, stoking racial strive and division, and echoing Dem talking points about racist conservatives, evil Republicans, the selfish uncaring "rich", etc.

All that said: It was good, and I think he had just the right blend of "It's the policies, stupid" and "Barack Obama is a stuttering clusterf*ck of a miserable failure" in the speech.

I do feel slightly vindicated though, and it's not about rubbing other people's noses in it, rather it's about being pleased to have gotten this one right.  A lot of people kept pointing out that the idea of Romney 'going soft' on Obama was ridiculous based on 1.) the fervor and commitment with which he's run all his campaigns (indeed, with which he's thrown himself into everything in his entire life); and 2.) the fact that neither he nor his team are idiots.  I'm thrilled to see him come running right out of the box, and bringing skeptics over to his side.

He sounds like a winner, you know.

It may have just been a "tone" thing there (note to self: remember there is no tone of voice on the internet).  But there have been several of the Romneybots who have been absolute jerks ever since Santorum dropped out of the race.  My patience for such has worn thin.

And I agree: I liked this speech a lot.  I'm still a skeptic (one speech does not a platform make), but the tone was right.  If he can keep it up in non-scripted moments, I'll be more willing to believe it.

104

I watched this live last night. ....And yeah, it was a great speech. More, please.

There is no erasing the fact that thoughout the early primaries.....Romney consistantly pulled in around 25% of the votes. ...That was when there were several Not-Romneys to choose from.

Which means that 75% of the voters that Romney needs to support him....didn't start out supporting him.

Speeches like this will help.....help to smooth the ruffled feathers that Romney and his Pacs rubbed the wrong way, just a few months ago.

But what will not help....is if the 25%-ers, who have always supported Romney, cannot resist the urge to be gloating dickheads.....and as a result, ruffle those feathers that Romney himself is trying to smooth down.

Posted by: wheatie at April 25, 2012 07:59 AM (O4AQQ)

105 39 Well there you go he starts making noises like a conservative and all the moderates are going to run away screaming. Right? That's what I hear anyway.

Not really.  The fact is that people will flock to a charismatic candidate (Obama) as long as (a) they don't discuss controversial policy positions too deeply and (b) they are likeable.

If you explain it in terms of freedom from oppressive government, if you couch it in hope and optimism and you're good at communicating, you win.  But any good product can be sold poorly.

106 ItÂ’s still about the economy Â…

It was NEVER about the economy

It was about a feral government that has run totally amok (which affects the economy) and the treasonous retard who is driving us into the ground and abusing everything about us and our nation that he can think up in that pea-brain of his, but it is not about the economy.  It's about maintaining our unique governance (almost gone, now) and the character of America (also close to snuffed out, already).  It's about the Rule Of Law versus the insanity of the America-hating empathy retards.

This is also why, after the election, arrests MUST occur.   Without that, you can hang it all up because it will be over.

I read the speech earlier and liked it.  I watched the speech and LOVED it.  Mitt wasn't my first choice either, but he knows what the hell he is doing here and he has a good speechwriter.  It was as good an "opening" speech for a general election as I have heard.  Certainly beats the hell out of Barry's "this is the day when the oceans started to recede" bullshit in 2008.  And I do love the juxtaposition of this serious and sober speech the same night our Doofus-In-Chief embarrasses himself on Jimmy Fallon's show.

Is it easier to make ends meet? Is it easier to sell your home or buy a new one?  Have you saved what you needed for retirement? Are you making more in your job?  Do you have a better chance to get a better job?  Do you pay less at the pump?

And as people say, if Mitt's message is "experience," Rubio undermines that message. If a poll demonstrated he really could win over a fair number of Hispanics, I'd reverse this line of thinking; but at the moment I think he'd have a very marginal/MoE-sized effect.

I know Mitt is going to disappoint pretty often.  Instead of Ronald Reagan we're electing Meh Rom-meh.

But he gets one thing that Reagan got.  Remember Reagan's vision of the Cold War: "We win, they lose"?  Romney gets that.  He's spent his career winning, and not because he was black or had inherited wealth, but by offering products people wanted and by piling up the skulls of his competitors.

Mormons usually make sucky poker players, but Romney might be an exception.  He comes across like this awkward overly earnest guy and then he steamrolls you.

160 Here's a link to CNN article about Team Romney and his immigration stance in case you missed it. http://tinyurl.com/7ltao5q "Republican Sen. Marco Rubio, a GOP favorite for vice president, discussed his own version of the DREAM Act at a panel discussion earlier this week. Rubio's measure would offer only a path to legal status, not citizenship. "I felt we had to find a way to accommodate young people who found themselves in the unfortunate circumstance," Rubio said Thursday about his version of the DREAM Act. In response to Rubio's remarks, the Romney campaign put out a statement saying the presumptive GOP nominee "will study and consider any proposals on immigration from his Republican partners." Kobach opposes the original DREAM Act as a form of "amnesty." He said he would have to look at Rubio's proposal before rendering a judgment on the measure. In an interview with CNN, Kobach said he did not expect Romney to soften his stance on the issue. "I think it would be unusual for a national presidential candidate to back away from statements he's made in debates and he hasn't shown any sign of doing so," Kobach told CNN. Kobach said he believes Romney has endorsed the Arizona immigration law known as SB1070 as a model for the country, pointing to the former Massachusetts governor's comments at CNN's GOP debate in February. "You know, I think you see a model in Arizona," Romney said at the debate. Romney's aides say he was not endorsing the law as a national model in the debate and was only referring to the state's E-Verify system used by employers to confirm the legal status of their workers."

Mittens needs to distance himself from McShame and any other amnesty idiots he might hear about.  Amnesty is TOTAL FIRE and Mittens will torch the GOP if he doesn't deal with this correctly.  Even dems get beaten badly when they go treasonous pro-amnesty.  That's what killed SHrillary's 2008 bid and started the downfall of Spitzer (whose approval rating crashed from over 70% to under 40% in a matter of a week or two after Shrillary told the nation that the prick wanted to license illegals).

This ain't rocket science.  Shit, it ain't even model rocket science.

Posted by: Niedermeyer's Dead Horse at April 25, 2012 08:39 AM (piMMO)

177 The simple point is that if your parents were not citizens when you were born, no matter where, even within the US, you are not known legally as a natural born citizen. Neither Jindal and Rubio both are thus ineligible. For if they are, isn't Boris Johnson also eligible? After all, he was born in New York in 1964. If birth location is all that matters, well then there you go. Mayor of London for veep. Let's do this! History!

Natural born citizen =!= REAL citizen

Don't be an ass.  Natural born citizen is an actual category of citizenship and it is different from other American citizenships.  It was put in by the Founders for a very specific reason - generally to stop the sort of shit that we see with Barky - though the purpose is not just to stop malevolent foreign influence, but other sorts of foreign influence into our system and in control of our army.  THis is a serious issue. There is not much in the Constitution and this specification is one of the very few things they put in.

What it boils down to, NDH, is whether or not every anchor baby out there is eligible to be POTUS.

Mitt's dad wasn't born here either. ....But at least he was a citizen when Mitt was born. .....So, that is a good place to draw the line, I think....at least require that the president's parents were both citizens, at the time of their birth.

Otherwise....we've got all these Anchor Baby Mills spewing out potential presidential candidates.

192 From wiki:

Status as a natural-born citizen of the United States is one of the eligibility requirements established in the United States Constitution for election to the office of President or Vice President. This requirement was an attempt to allay concerns that foreign aristocrats might immigrate to the new nation and use their wealth and influence to impose a monarchy.

Both Jindal and Rubio qualify, technically.  Whether they should be the VP candidate is another issue.

If someone is so determined to influence politics by coming here, having a baby specifically to raise them for two decades so they can run for office they're not going to mind waiting another generation, so what then? Make it three generations? We're talking about people who are willing to wait decades so they probably won't mind that either, so how far do you want to go back? Three generations? Four? Why don't we just establish a monarchy?

Perhaps you're not familiar with the Anchor Baby Mills that are located across the country. ....The Mom flies in, spends her last few weeks of pregnancy in one of these 'baby houses'....then goes to the hospital to give birth.

Mom then goes back to her home country, with her US-citizen baby....and raises it there. ....Those babies were born here. You want one for a president some day?

We've already got a guy for president, whose dad was never a citizen....and who was raised outside the country during his formative years. ....How's that working out?

Citizen parents are required.  Lots of people are born in America.  Diplomat's kids are born in America and they aren't even given American citizenship - as per the Constitution.

Oh ... wait!  Diplomats kids ARE given American citizenships, these days, because no one gives a shit what the Constitution says about anything.  It's all empathy, now.

I like Jindal.  But he's not a natural born citizen and he should be the first to say that.  What's the big deal, anyway?  It's one friggin job that he isn't eligible for, and for a good reason that has nothing to do with him.

IN any event, to those who don'
t get the Founders' reasoning, here's a July 1787 letter from John Jay to George Washington explaining part of it:

Permit me to hint, whether it would not be wise [and] seasonable to provide a strong check to the admission of Foreigners into the administration of our national Government; and to declare expresly that the Command in chief of the american army shall not be given to, nor devolve on, any but a natural born Citizen.

If you're worried about a Manchurian candidate there's just as much chance of that with someone who's family has lived here for generations.

Is that what some of you are saying? Is that what the founders meant by clearly stating that you must be a natural born citizen to be President of the US? Why would they try and change it if it wasn't cut and dried? Seven of those listed were attempts to do away with natural born citizenship, a couple of those probably had Ahhnuuld in mind, and the one that wasn't was an attempt to stop one that was.

222 Jeff B: I'm thinking the VP pick will be one of the following: Ryan, Portman, McDonnell, Jindal.

Kelly Ayotte will be short-listed.

Watch the travel, the VP will need some foreign policy exposure. Especially after the disaster that was Sarah Palin; whose ghost will likely kill Ayotte's chances.

Those in contention, and desire the spot, know who they are and to keep themselves in-play will make moves. See Christie's happenstance trip to Israel in early April. See Rubio's speech at Brookings.

The benefit of Marco Rubio isn't the direct Latino connection; that's patronizing and silly. It's that he's an articulate conservative fighter who would be an attack dog. The same thing can be said for Ryan, who is fantastic. Think Eisenhower's Nixon.

They also provides a transition to the younger generation of conservative leaders. Rubio's problem is that he needs to pass the vetting.

The Portman noise is being fed. Ask yourself why and watch where people travel. Rumble-in-the-Jungle.

The part where he says something like, do you have a higher paying job now than you did four years ago? then says, do you havea chance of getting a better job now than four years ago? I think he should then say, heck, do you even have a job at all?

Posted by: Aslan's Girl at April 25, 2012 04:29 PM (KL49F)

224 Rubio would be a terrible choice. First, we need him in the Senate, 2nd he has some eligibility problems (maybe not be a big deal, but enough to cause a major distraction after the way Repubs went after Obama's eligibility), 3rd, lack of experience or any experience in business or running anything.)

Mitt will not pick a VP based on gender or race. He will pick one he believes can take over as president, one who is extremely qualified, and one who will not embarrass the ticket in any way. This is Romney's strength. He is a detail man, someone his colleagues describe as being interested in the smallest detail and then be able to toss all those details in the air and see the big picture as they land. He is most applauded in the business world for his decison-making ability. He will not be someone who selects someone based on what might or might not play with the racists out there.

I also do not think Mitt will follow the typical base and select someone just because they gave a good speech sometime in the past. I personally like Paul Ryan, but I have a feeling that Mitt is going to name someone none of us has thought of, yet when he does, we'll all think, why didn't I think of him/her, of course, she/he is perfect.

This is a guy who plans and who knows where he is going and how he'll get there and how he'll bring you along with him.
