Mitt Romney: Attacks Are "Beneath [Obama's] Dignity"
— DrewM

I have to disagree with Mitt on this. From his admitted drug use to the thuggish and lawless behavior of his administration, it's clear Obama has no dignity.

“What kind of president would have a campaign that says something like that about the nominee of another party? This is reckless and absurd on his part, and it’s something that’s beneath his dignity,” Romney said in an interview with CBS. “I hope he recognizes that even fellow Democrats have said that. Look, the President needs to talk about the direction he’d take the country and stop these kinds of ads and attacks that are so disparate from what the American people want to talk about.”

During is round of network interviews yesterday, Mitt also said Obama owes him an apology.

Based on the sudden desire to sit for all those interviews (something he's avoided throughout the primary and now general campaigns), it's clear Team Mitt was worried about the toll a week of false stories pushed by the Democratic media took on their guy.

Unfortunately the tone Romney struck yesterday was not very helpful. Instead of going on the attack over the Bain stories, he seemed defensive. Talking about Obama's alleged "dignity" and demanding apologies that will never come (Mitt never gave any to his GOP opponents) seemed weak.

As the saying goes, if you're explaining, you're losing. Mitt should have gone on the offensive. Forget about personality issues, refocus every biased question back on Obama's failures and how they have hurt voters and the country. "Everyone knows when I left Bain, just as everyone knows Obama was President when your tax dollars were used to fund auto production in Finland as part of the "stimulus" that didn't do what the President said it would and only got us further into this historic level of debt that is chocking job growth". "Obama wants to talk about when I left my job at Bain, I want to talk about all the people who were kicked out their jobs while he's been President and how I will help put them back to work". And on and on and on.

I'm sure some Team Romney types will say he's being calm and not swinging back hard will help win over squishy moderates. Maybe. Or maybe just sticking to his "gosh, this is just awful talk beneath a President" shtick will start to morph into the idea that Romney is a wimp. Ask George H.W. Bush how that worked out.

In short, forget the demands for an apology, punch him in the nuts.

We've been getting a little cocky about how easy this might be for Mitt. It's a good thing I don't believe in July polls because if I did, Rasmussen showing Romney and Obama tied in Florida would worry me.

Below the fold is a great (and by that I mean terrible) ad by Team Obama. Yes, it's all based on BS but just wait until it starts playing like crazy in Ohio and Pennsylvania. And remember, it's not aimed at committed Romney voters like you who know better. It's aimed at people who think they are smart because they are "uncommitted" but just decide who to vote for based on the ads they watch.

The race is on to define Romney, he needs to deflect that but also remind people why they don't want another 4 years of Obama. It's not because he's mean to Mitt but because he's been a disaster for America. I really hope Romney comes out hard soon. The gutting of welfare reform is a gift to him, he better use it well.

Yes, it's very early in the cycle and perhaps this is sheer desperation by Obama. You can't win the election in July and August but you can certainly sow the seeds of defeat if you let the opposition define you.

Romney's been coasting on the idea that saying, "the economy sucks" will be enough. It won't. People know that already. Romney needs to remind them that Obama has made it worse and that he can make it better.

4 Why good heavens dear sir, that Napoleon Obama fellow's pre-breakfast raids are beneath his dignity! Someone must notify his chief of staff immediately and advise him of the mistakes to protocol. It is quite improper to engage in battle before arising and having a full and decent meal.

I must alert Citizen McCain of this mistake in protocol of the Good and Decent French Leader. Perhaps he can reach-around the aisle and provide the dear good man with a gentlemanly reminder. He may also wish to remind the fellow that battles should only take place on mutually agreed upon fields, as he seems to have forgotten this with his recent skirmishes on the Bain issue we had agreed was not within the proper limits. Nor is engaging in battle during afternoon tea. Good heavens, how can a proper gentleman conduct battle during tea?!!

I don't know what Drew was watching but on CNN Romney gave a great interview and came as close as you can come to calling Obama a liar without using the word liar. Now maybe he should roll the dice and just flat out call him a liar instead of dishonest. I think both words mean the same though and one isn't as flamable as the other.

I think most people get the idea though that if you are dishonest you are a liar.

I think it's great Mitt is demanding an apology. After years of  Republicans offering umpteen apologies to jackass donks for contrived offenses and imaginary outrages, a GOP candidate is finally making them live by their own phony rules. And Obama's attacks on Romney diminish the Preezy. He's the one with the bully pulpit, he's the one above it all. His coolness was supposed to preclude any kind of down and dirty tactics.

Obama is now the offender instead of the offendee.

21 I think this is a good line of attack. Its not so much about Barack Obama's dignity, he seems to have little. Its about the office of president and creating an image of the race being between a man who has and understands the dignity of the office... and one who does not. It makes the guy IN the office seem less presidential and the guy running for it seem more so.

23 Drew, I agree with you that Romney needs to "punch Obama in the nuts." My guess is that Ace feels the same. I don't know how much "Team Romney" reads conservative webs sites; I assume somebody over there does read some. My opinion is if there is a coalition of power bloggers such as Ace, Michelle Malkin, Stacy McCain, people at PJ Media, William Jacobsen of "Legal Insurrection" (which are all blogs/websites I read) and/or others go as a group or do a conference call saying that this is what Romney should o, he might be more inclined to pursue that course. Heaven knows one little person who writes the same thing on the comment section over at the Romney campaign (such as I do) isn't going to do it. maybe if lots of other people do it will help As a former liberal (voting Democrat until the primaries of 200 who understand how they work I can tell you that the only thing Obama will "get" is someone who stands up to him.. If Romney tries to act the gentleman he will LOSE period. He has to hit Obama and hit him hard and not be on the defensive. The country is worth it.

But I believe significantly more than 50% of the voters would find Obama's message to be very un-American.

Some people say that it "doesn't matter" who the VP pick is.....because VP's are useless.

I don't agree with that.

This time it matters.

It matters more than it ever has before.

It matters....because this election matters more than it ever has before.

If Romney is not going to fight....and fight hard....then he needs a VP pick who will.

Even Sean Hannity, of all people, said...."People want him to pick a fighter".

And he's right.

This is why I keep coming back to Allan West.

West is a fighter, who is not squeamish about taking direct shots at Barky.

West would say the things that Romney.....can not say....and will not say.

West has already been saying them.

Which is why he has a huge following across the country.

Drew M.

Excellent post.

Obama is something this country heretofore (yes, even inclusive of Nixon) has never experienced. Mr. Obama is simply diabolical in his means and methods and has fractured this country.  No amount of classical political analysis will help to explain away such actions. For Obama operates within a realm that is so beyond good faith as to be in a word, shocking.

The framers knew we would eventually get to this point however, they probably did not think that the press would be complicit in it.

Presently, the president and press are attempting to frame business as bad and thus, by extension Romney as bad through the outsourcing memes and by actually calling Romney a criminal.

This is beyond troubling.

We can be assured that the framers were empowered by the divine and that we are surely not left without the assistance from on high in such a critical time for our country.

Good prevails over evil.  This is what we need to remember.

Posted by: Scandia at July 14, 2012 10:01 AM (WzLTm)

62 Let's be accurate: Romney didn't say "Obama's dignity." He said "his"--and in context he was saying "what kind of President." So he's not talking about Obama's dignity per se, but the dignity of the President. And that's not a bad counter, provided Romney also comes with the hard, fast one right under Obama's chin. His surrogates--like Sununu!--should do the nasty work on Obama, but this is how you separate Obama from the "presidential" aura the MSM likes to surround him with.

It's *not* exhibiting presidential dignity, and Obama is squandering one of the few remaining edges he has on Romney. For the squishes (not us), Romney is the say-anything guy, whereas Obama has good intentions. No, he doesn't.

And like I said, Sununu was on CNN yesterday reminding America of Tony Rezko etc. He got very personal with the felony word, instead of talking loftily about the dignity of the office.

It's a decent one-two, if you ask me.

As far as the McCain and 2008 comparisons, it's more accurate to say it was Obama surrogates who started going after McCain every time he got aggressive and saying how unpresidential and dishonorable *he* was behaving. The comparison, therefore, is backward. Obama positioned himself very much as slow to anger and above the fray.

74 Scandia- IMO, good prevails over evil (if you are a person of the Christian faith) in the sense that God ultimately wins., but America is not the same as the Kingdom of God and Scripture would tell us that God uses human rulers to overthrow nations. I believe God will ultimately prevail in a new heaven and a new earth, I'm not sure America will or that God wants it to. My prayer is that the truth about Obama will come out before the election and that somehow our country can be saved. I never pray about the results of elections.

Wheatie,

On God's watch.  Good always prevails.

I really don't want to engage in the esoterics of divine destiny however, I will say that everything has already been written of that which is and will be.

Nature is a reflection of our destiny with both beginning and an end.  Looking beyond nature and to the heavens we are outside of nature into a realm no one can surely explain as there is no beginning and end yet we accept such as reality.

We are in a war of principalities and good yes, wins.

We live in a world that spins 26 thousand miles in 24 hours, suspended in something called space, orbiting around a huge mass called the sun hundreds of millions of miles away and this keeps us suspended while a moon orbiting around us pulls on the oceans ---- and all of this takes place in a celestial realm that has no beginning or end.

My moron friends. We have always been playing out the end times and America was crafted as the one establishment of man who organized himself under a moral code acknowledged by a divine benefactor of freedoms as outlined in the only constitution EVER to place man under God with inalienable rights as true sovereigns who give thanks through such a document by boldly proclaiming that which made us in God's image and likeness ---- LIBERTY and FREE WILL.

@131 -

everyone doesn't own an iPhone or have a big screen TV. (Some of us have no TV at all). Yes we all have refrigerators and food, and are painfully conscious of the cost of running the appliance and also the rising cost of food. The unemployment rate is still high, that's what is keeping the housing market from recovering. People are afraid to buy homes while feeling insecure at their jobs. That's if you can even qualify for a home loan.

I heard Rush making this same case, and I thought he really missed the mark. John Q and Average Jane are definitely feeling the effects of a stalled economy.

Since he has been doing it...even more...than Romney ever did, if he even did it at all.
Barky used our money to outsource jobs, fgs!....so you'd think he wouldn't want to go there.
But he did.

You'd think that Barky wouldn't want to bring up the word 'felony', either.
Since his own past is littered with that word.

I disagree with this post. I think Romney did fine, let the Obots drain their money on all this nonsense, calling Romney a felon, a rapist or whatever hell they're calling him. As long as Romney is hitting back and defending it. This is just kicking up sand, the fact is they are practically tied, and if you take away the +7 percent dems they have in these polls, Romney at the very very very least is a bit head.

Romney did fine, he's hitting back, while Sununu is doing what needs to be done, calling Barry a lying pile of crap. Newt needs to get in there and do the same, Romney can stay above the fray, defend himself, and needs to get the focus on the economy again.

Once the tweens at the Obot campaign have worn themselves out, then the romney camp can start hitting back really really hard.  The only thing Romney needs to make sure he does now, at this point in the campaign, is let these stupid attempts to define him go unanswered, use it to boomerang on Barry, demonrats, etc.

and really barry?  you're calling romney a felon!?!!?

225 ***UPDATE: The Romney camp has already responded to the ad: Every day, President Obama hits a new low. It is sad and shameful that President Obama would mock America The Beautiful. But sadly it’s not surprising for the man who launched his presidency with an apology tour. The ‘Uncle Jims’ of our country – as he condescendingly calls middle-class Americans – don’t believe in mocking America The Beautiful and don’t believe in apologizing for America. - Romney for President. The "Uncle Jims" reference comes from a quote from the President in Virginia yesterday: So just in case some of your friends or neighbors, or Uncle Jim, who’s a little stubborn and been watching FOX News -- (laughter) -- and he thinks that somehow I raised taxes -- let’s just be clear: We’ve lowered taxes for middle-class families since I came into office. 226 Every point Obama has made has been an example of his own hypocrisy. Mitt needs to point this out. Outsourcing? Buying product like busses and helicopters? Where did those fucking t-shirts at the Gabby Gifford rally come from? Sending money overseas to build cars and create technology? WTF? And when he hasn't outsourced, how many people were hired under his watch? For how much money per job? And this bullshit about Mitt being responsible for whatever happened at Baine while he was turning the Olympics around? So Obama says Mitt had a job already and he fucked it up. Well Obama has a job and when he isn't doing it, he's not doing anything useful. The problem is, when Obama is on the job, he fucks that up pretty well (see above for the hpocisy). Obama isn't just undignified. He's a total hypocritical fuck up.

227 The ad by Obama...is desperate. Doing this type of ad so early in the election cycle--mid July-- when hardly anyone is paying attention suggests that Obama's internal polling must be really bad for--Obama. Much worse than the polling that is out there for public consumption. Looks like a desperate attempt to blunt Romney's momentum. If they are dropping this kind of ordnance now--what's left to throw at Romney in late October?

There is nothing beneath Obama's dignity, because he has precious little of it.

"The ends justify the means", and he's not kidding.  He has power, he wants more power, and he will do anything, ANYTHING, to do that.

The campaign after September 1 will get real rough, this is just a tussle in the grass.

Romney needs three basic lines of campaign adds.

1) Who is Mitt Romney / and running mate?

2) What will a Romney presidency do?  (these adds are already runnng in Ohio, don't know about elsewhere)

3) Who is Barack Obama?    Define who this guy is and tell the people just what he had done.  Read his damn book (Dreams of my Neighbor's Father) and pull out the "true" stuff that Obama says about himself.  Show him with Blago and Rezco.  Talk about the people in his cabinet (I'm look at you, Tim Geithner and you, Janet Napolitano).  Tie a can to this guy's ass so that this stuff dogs him everywhere.

Maybe they are slow to respond cause they are fact checking this.

Romney released this statement yesterday:

“President Obama now wants to strip the established work requirements from welfare,” Romney said.  “The success of bipartisan welfare reform, passed under President Clinton, has rested on the obligation of work. The presidentÂ’s action is completely misdirected. Work is a dignified endeavor, and the linkage of work and welfare is essential to prevent welfare from becoming a way of life.”

Posted by: tasker at July 14, 2012 11:17 AM (r2PLg)

267 I can't say that I object to Romney's handling of this. I really don't know what the best method is, except that it needs to be something he himself is comfortable with. (I think one problem Palin ran into was she was not comfortable with how she was told to campaign.) I realize the Dems are trying to set an impression of Romney, but overall I just find it hard to believe anything matters right now. It's summer, people are traveling, he doesn't have a running mate, and there's been no convention. Honestly, I don't even really understand what the "allegation" is that underlies the Dems' Bain attacks. I gather they are trying to set up the timing so that they can saddle Mitt with some moves Bain made after he left. One line of attack that I read about yesterday was some investments in a company that disposes of aborted fetuses. Although, I have to say that any pro-lifer that allows themselves to be talked out of voting for Mitt (who I think is not particularly strongly pro-life out of personal conviction) when he's running against a virulently pro-abortion guy is too stupid to live. That sounds harsh, but I could not be more rigidly opposed to abortion, yet it's clear to me the only way we get the laws changed is by patiently working toward incremental shifts in public opinion. Anyway, to me I think he is doing ok being patient. And I would not pick my running mate especially early if I were him.

I hope so, but I fear its beyond turning around at this point no matter who is in office. I seriously doubt he'd sign full repeal of the Government Health Insurance Act, even if congress passed it.

315 I think we can benefit this election by using one of the attack lines the Democrats used against Bush in '92 about President Bush wanting to "stay the course." The economy was bad, like now. People wanted change, not to stay the course, which is why Perot's reforms were so appealing to enough voters to hand Clinton the victory with just 43%.

That's a common assertion.  I don't think it's backed up.  This is why:

http://tinyurl.com/7wrxvze

If Mr. Perot had not been on the ballot, 38 percent of his voters said, they would have voted for Gov. Bill Clinton, and 38 percent said they would have voted for President Bush.

Now, there was another exit poll that said 27% of Perot's voters were conservatives and 20% were liberals (the rest moderates):

http://tinyurl.com/c9k9ntx

Given that Perot got 19% of the vote and Bush lost by 5.5% of the vote, that still doesn't work.

Bush lost a lot of conservatives when he raised taxes and passed the stupid ADA act.

Yeah, fair enough--but his 1988 campaign still wasn't an example of staying above the fray and winning.  Lee Atwater had the benefit of people (either in the Bush campaign or outside it) counterattacking heavily.

331 It's not "sheer desperation" by Obama. Character assassination is how he has run *every* campaign for public office. It's the Chicago Way, and the only one he uses.

The idiocy of assuming Mittens can 'scold' Obama into civility is mind-boggling. While he pats around the edges of the insults as if they're simple misunderstandings, Obama defines every bit of ground that will be used in the campaign.

It's all about Bain, which ought to be a non-issue by now. It's all about Romney's taxes, when they should be pointing at Obama's foreign income EVEN AS PRESIDENT.

They're entirely one-note on the economy, which the electorate has largely already factored in and blamed on both parties. He can't and won't attack Obama on Syria, the mishandling of the so-called Arab Spring, the manifold insults of our allies. The fact that he's willfully endangering our defense with sequestration. The cover-up of Fast and Furious and this Administration's war on whistle-blowers. Everything that demonstrates we have a wanna-be tyrant in the Oval Office, Romney's staff ignores.

God forbid we might get the media mad at us. They might call Republicans racist or something...

341 Its a bit early to condemn the Romney campaign for not hitting on every single conceivable problem that President Obama has. There's a lot of weeks to go, and if you splooge it all on the public at once, they won't be able to assimilate or make sense of any of it.
I agree though, that this is just how Obama runs. He's always destroyed his opponents instead of getting people to want to vote for him. His campaign is totally predictable, and you can hear it in his surrogates in the press: this isn't about Obama being great, its about his opponent being horrible.
However, I do not think Romney is trying to get the Obama team to be civil. Its about getting the press and public to recognize how uncivil and unpresidential he's acting. Its about positioning himself as the most presidential-seeming candidate. That's worth a lot of politically-ignorant votes.

363 BTW, for the record, I don't think Romney right now = Bush 1992.

Right now we have hope and general sense that we can win this thing.  The polls are dead even.  Looking back on this, it's jarring to realize just how badly Bush was doing:

http://tinyurl.com/7a593n8

The Los Angeles Times Poll of 1,146 registered voters, taken Wednesday through Friday, showed Mr. Clinton preferred by 56 percent and Mr. Bush preferred by 33 percent. That 23-point advantage represented a slight widening from the 20-point Democratic advantage in a Los Angeles Times poll at the end of the Democratic convention.

The Newsweek Poll of 750 registered voters, conducted Thursday and Friday by the Gallup Organization, showed Mr. Clinton leading Mr. Bush by 53 percent to 36 percent. That 17 percentage point margin was narrower than the 27-point lead for Mr. Clinton in a Newsweek poll right after the Democratic convention.

A separate Gallup Poll of 1,001 registered voters, taken last Monday to Wednesday for CNN and USA Today, showed a 19-point gap: 56 percent for Mr. Clinton and 37 percent for Mr. Bush. That poll concluded Mr. Clinton had shown little erosion between the party conventions; three earlier Gallup Polls had put Mr. Clinton's advantage at 20 to 25 percentage points.

I was naive and young back then.  It's amazing to think I once actually thought we had a prayer.

375 377 My lib/dem friends are waaaay too cocky for the October/first couple days of November surprise not to be a game changer. They are so confident they are going to win that when I tell them tea party types are worried that they'll commit voter fraud, they always say "won't need too" with that snippy little self assured smirk on their little designer clothed personas. And they then remind you about the largest legal team every assembled for a presidential candidate's protection.

Sometimes I just get up and walk away cause it is maddening how smug they are.

Ron Paul will likely endorse Romney at the convention as a keynote speaker, although I doubt it will be a full-throated endorsement.

Then I look forward to seeing the twenty foot yard signs draped in black.

380 Unfortunately the tone Romney struck yesterday was not very helpful. Instead of going on the attack over the Bain stories, he seemed defensive. Talking about Obama's alleged "dignity" and demanding apologies that will never come (Mitt never gave any to his GOP opponents) seemed weak.

What a crock of nuclear grade stupid horseshit. The author of this drivel must have the brains of shit stained underwear and the historical perspective of an aborted fetus.

Let me s-p-e-l-l it out for you:

Obama has very high personal likeability rating.

Attacks against presidents with high likeability ratings always do irreparable harm to the attacker.

Case in point: the GOP tried to impeach the high likeable President Clinton. The result? They lost their asses in the 1998 elections. 1998 was the polar opposite of 1994 solely because the GOP was stupid enough to go into a full bore attack mode against a highly likeable president.

WTF?

The people who sign onto the premise presented in this thread must be either too young to remember 1998 or dumb as shit.

The best way for Romney to handle this is to educate the voters, particularly the moderate, low information voters, on the lies these attacks consist of. Preferably with a bit of humor while likening it to the kinds of lies everybody has experienced against themselves during their lifetimes.

Romney is doing just fine.

And he's best off by totally ignoring the red meat base (who, BTW have been rendered insane by their rage) and the Eeyores.

If he does those two things he can't lose.

If he doesn't, the election is his to lose.

382 Its hilarious to watch you use Meggy Mac in attempts to be derogatory when you once loved posting articles she wrote.  But then you started being mocked for being just like her except lacking the famous daddy and so you now use her as an insult.  Just like every other insult you ever attempt to use, it was a thought that did not come from your vapid head.

The MSM will play with Romney like that guy in Reservoir Dogs played with his victimsÂ…

This electoral cycle begins with rivalries, and as the SCANDALS will multiply against him, Romney will become a scapegoat, a victim for the public to feast onÂ…

The torture of Romney will transform the angry people (broked and raging) into a circus crowd — captivated by a bloody show. When the *public* will be satiated with Romney’s blood and flesh, with all that violence to come — the Obama Regime will expect them folks to go sleep peacefully.

392 "I'm sure some Team Romney types will say he's being calm and not swinging back hard will help win over squishy moderates."

This Team Romney-ite thinks that not swinging back harder is a mistake. Romney needs to show teeth if he wants to beat BO.

Obama will try to unite the country in hatred against Romney.

The nation is so divided, so fragmented, that the MSM — lead by Obama the Prosecutor in Chief — will end up believing Romney is a dangerous person, someone evil, of whom they must rid the nation.

Romney will be destroyed. The MSM will feed on his flesh and drink his blood.

Obama and the MSM will hunt, expel, and destroy the Mittens — until the bread and circus crowd finds itself devoid of rage, united in this cannibalistic feast.

Obama accuses with impunity. ThatÂ’s how Satan operates in the Scriptures.

Satan first wants to seduce, as Obama did in 2008. But after Satan brings *scandals*.

Satan works by accusation. Once his victim is completely deprived of defenders, nothing can protect her from the angry crowd. Everyone can beat her up without having to fear reprisal.

ThatÂ’s what Obama is doing to Romney.

Obama is feeding the appetites for violence and for scandals… — the MSM are hungry… — are desiring nothing other than Romney’s destruction.

Satan sows the scandals and generates great crises, transforming a nation into a burning furnaceÂ… of rage.

In 1991 Obama put out a promotional booklet claiming he was born in Kenya.  At some point he either told them he was born in Kenya or told his literary agent he was born in Kenya.

Now, you know he was born in Hawaii and I know he was born in Hawaii.  Based on that contradiction of himself, would Romney be justified in claiming Obama was born in Kenya?  If you're willing to say this is fair attack by Obama, even though four Obama supporters who worked for Bain at the time say it's a lie, even though both the Washington Post and factcheck.org say it's a lie, then the Obama being born in Kenya claim is an equally fair claim.

Obama should be trialed, and then executed. He's committed several capital offenses.

Hopefully, he would confess to his sins before metting his Maker.

I didn't say Romney is getting crushed.

That doesn't mean Romney isn't making a major tactical error in letting Obama define both the GOP and the ground the campaign will be fought on. That doesn't mean that Romney's staff aren't being naive in assuming they can say it's only about the economy and thinking that will win, when the electorate has decided both the bastards are responsible for the mess.

In elections, despite all the talk of how negative advertising influences campaign, the iron is the most optimistic candidate typically wins. That is, the candidate who projects the clearest message of how to move forward, and the one that can most clearly articulate a positive vision for the country, is the one who wins. It's not enough to say what the other guy isn't doing. It's mandatory to say what you WILL do to make things right.

It's also necessary to show every area of significant disagreement and demonstrate how your vision for the country is better. That makes people believe in you instead of the other guy.

Romney isn't doing that. He's letting Obama define the ground. "Outsourcer-in-chief" and "Tax Returns" are going to be campaign fodder until November unless Romney can demonstrate he can hit back harder. You turn the tables and define the attack in term of the incumbent's failures. And you hit harder, and more often. The Challenger has to win. Not just coast. Problem is, Romney likes to coast on his sea of money and his nice hair. That's not going to be enough.

406 James Walcott of Vanity Fair;
What's brilliant about "Firms" isn't so much the way it mails home the irony of Romney murdering "America the Beautiful" with his toneless, tuneless voice on the soundtrack as info flashcards remind us of all the jobs Bain Capital shipped overseas and how much money Romney's stashed in tax havens such as Bermuda and the Cayman Islands, though it is a clever, damaging juxtaposition that takes Romney's chief asset as a candidate--his halo of executive achievement--and hangs it around his neck like a choke collar. Very Rovian, that.

No, what's genius is the initial transition between President Obama striding a few steps at the White House and cutting to Mitt making with song...the contrast between Obama's vocal and physical gravitas and Mitt's goofiness is hilarious, devastating, emasculating. It's like going from The Shawshank Redemption to Jerry Lewis in The Nutty Professor when the Buddy Love spell wears off, from Sidney Poitier in In the Heat of the Night to Fred MacMurray in Son of Flubber. And the fact that this ad is approved by Obama gives it much more authority and pow than if it were just something cooked up at the editing console by some bright operatives hoping the video would go YouTube viral. It's a smackdown from the man himself, not some Democratic front group, thus sending a much stronger message.

It's clear that the Obama campaign's strategy is to hit Romney hard early, define and diminish him in the public imagination with cartoon clarity, and send him into the Republican convention with a Dan Quayle deer-in-the-headlights look that conveys the unbearable lightness of completely lost.

407 I fail to see how depicting Mitt Romney as a careful man with money, a successful executive businessman who also ran the first financially successful Olympics in history is going to somehow hurt him with voters. Seriously?
