Mitt Romney Gets Personal
— DrewM

One of the frustrating parts of the Romney campaign has been his unwillingness to talk about himself in personal times or for the campaign to do any sort of advertising about how charitable he is.

We finally heard some of the stories during the GOP primary but now Romney is talking about these things himself.

That was from a rally Friday night in Virginia.

It's obvious Romney is uncomfortable talking about these kind of things (to his credit) but now that his off the charts debate performance has people giving him a second look (or a first in some cases), I hope the campaign finds a way to make sure people see this stuff. Honestly, I'm not sure Mitt is the best messenger for this. Perhaps having some of these folks on the trail with him or better yet, some ads, would be the most effective way to deliver the message.

I know some people hate this personal stuff and think it should be about plans and experience but politics is personal. There's no way to know everything a President will have to deal with (George W. Bush didn't run as a national security guy. Remember the whole "Education President" thing?). Voters, the dreaded "independents" at least, vote on feel, their judgement of the person. Romney has been hurt by the idea that he's an unfeeling corporate CEO that likes to fire people. There's obviously plenty of evidence to the contrary but it's up to Team Romney to tell people about it.

Hopefully we see more of this personal revelation as we close in on Election Day.

1 If he feels bashful talking about himself, then this is the kind of thing that Mrs. Romney and the kids should talk about. Or possibly the Bain employee whose daughter was saved thanks to Romney shutting down operations to look for her after she went missing.

5 Personal revelation is what Choom Boy spouted in '08 and continues to spew. Most of his "revelations" were -- and are -- lies, but that doesn't matter. Osama Obama used them to establish the cult of worshipers, and that is not good, IMO.

I really don't care if the president is likable, sometimes drips Wheatena on his bib, or has a thing about rescuing stray dogs. What matters is that said president do what he has sworn to do and behaves in a way that is in line with the Constitution, the laws of the nation and common decency. Osama Obama fails on all counts.

But hey, he's really a good dude, and people like him.

Nuts to that. The president can be a nice guy or a righteous jerk, and I won't mind. I simply want him to do his job. All else is squirrels and shiny stuff, and we've already had far too much of those.

The only story he can tell is having an "international" background would make him a better president.  That's been proven bullshit, a thousand times over by now.

8 I think, no matter what he says, what is most important is that it gets heard. That is the problem I am seeing. Now is the time to weave Romney into every corner of the universe, like Obama does, not just in commercials, but on the web (he owns Google), social media, tv, cable news, you name it. O is everywhere and it is sickening.

18 The Obama donor story has dropped at Breitbart. The most interesting parts leaked so far are that the guy who is running the site, Robert Roche, is a bundler with a bunch of visits to the White House and a lot of business ties to the Chinese government. The single-most interesting thing is the site traffic on the Obama donation site... 68% of all traffic comes from overseas. Pretty damning considering that NO donations are supposed to be coming in from foreigners.

19 While I like to hear some personal stories, I prefer to hear them from someone other than the candidate. When a politician talks about their personal interactions in an effort to show their giving, human side....It seems to cheapen it for me....like it's all for show. I like the humility that Romney has and prefers that he keep it that way. In other words "it's what you do when nobody's looking" that points to true character

Yes!! That was one of my favorites because it highlighted how absolutely inexperienced Obama is when it comes to business (and the economy in general). We saw this with his Obamacare speeches where he regularly accused doctors of charging $50,000 to unnecessarily remove tonsils or amputating the wrong limb. But the press never calls him out for these ridiculous assertions, so you get the feeling Obama has said them so many times that he actually believes them.
Obama can't counter a Romney anecdote about a business decision.

Imo, this just goes to accentuate Romney's character.  He is authentically humble, just as he is authentically honorable.  He is a chip off the old block and you can see the impact of his character on his sons.  THIS is what I wish the campaign would emphasize - the contrast between the character of Romney and the character flaws of Obama and his entire team!  On one hand, everything that can be known about one candidate is known and his history is sterling.  On the other hand, we have a candidate of whom very little is known with any certainty.  Much of what is known is from unreliable, shady and often sinister sources.  The only constant in this record is inconsistency, corruption and dishonorable behavior.

37 Voters, the dreaded "independents" at least, vote on feel, their judgement of the person. I know someone who uses the six year old test. The six year old test involves taking a six year old, making them watch both candidates speak and then asking the six year old what the child thinks about the candidates. Why do this? Because if you've met a six year old, you are aware s/he has no filter and will blurt out "He's mean! He's a liar! He's stupid!" A six year old doesn't understand what the words mean but a six year old is very good at detecting bullshit. Said person's wee tiny niece was actually afraid of Obama when she watched part of the debate in 2008 because "he looks creepy". Now, this is somewhat tongue in cheek but only somewhat. Kids know who is full of crap and will tell you so, generally very loudly and at the most inappropriate time.

I think it did.  Especially the followup comment, "Maybe I need a new accountant."  To cover for TFG, the "fact checkers" had to say, "Well, there's not actually a deduction for moving over-seas, but you avoid a lot of taxes and other costs, so what the President said was true in essence."  Or "False, but it helps the narrative, so we won't admit that."

The problem with that strategy is that Mitt's win wasn't on the basis of a zinger or a really memorable putdown a la "there you go again".  It was just a consistent, extended outclassing of a lightweight over an hour and a half.  I'm not sure you can convey that in short clips.

You can usually tell a lot about the kind of people who get angry when they hear stories about helping others.  They're the kind of folks who have seldom (if ever) actually helped anyone besides themselves.

I think that speaks volumes about where we are as a nation. When I've heard the stories of Mitt's deeds and compassion, I feel as if I cannot even measure to what this man has done. Accentuating character has little to do with likability, imo.  If there are many people like me out there, then having a politician who would likely tell the truth and do what they say would seal the deal.

That we have been conditioned for years that lying is just part of politics and is what is expected from politicians is bullshit.  It opens the door to and excuses the behavior and the political bullshit that got us here.

My belief is that the founders saw that the perpetuation of this country was dependent on the honor of its public servants.  I'd like to see the pendulum swing back in the direction where honorable behavior of politicians is the norm instead of the converse.

If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. 2“So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 3 But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your giving may be in secret. 88 188 High-larious video my wife sent me. It's a feel-good story about a homeless young man who turned his life around and became an opera singer. CNN somehow rammed a 47% story into it. The dude seemed nice at least. He said something like "In the end we have to take care of ourselves". Story in nic. Posted by: HoboJerky, now with 45% more DOOM! at October 08, 2012 09:52 AM (xAtAj) I am reposting HoboJerky's comment from last thread to make a point. Here is a story that a conservative could take and REDO from the conservative perspective. It leans so strong towards all of the conservative viewpoints and platforms. CNN goes out of their way to twist it into a 47% and no healthcare bs story. Conservatives would say: - here is a self-made man who struggled yet persevered, - took on the challenge and with self-respect, individual responsibility, and hard work turned himself into something (the american way) - he used the social safety net when appropriate, but then pulled himself out of it. He truly deserved the safety net, this is what our taxes are supposed to be for. Not couch potatoes, watching flat screens while using their Obamaphones.. This man is conservatism all wrapped up into one. Redo the interview.

91 Romney was my Governor and I have to admit that I'd been worried that he isn't conservative or aggressive enough for this task.

He's changed that perception with his shrewd and risky selection of Ryan as VP and his standing eight count performance at the debate.

I think that he's aware that his time has come at an extremely dangerous crossroad for our country and he's well prepared.

He knows it, we now know it, and no doubt the affirmative action embarrassment infecting the White House knows it as well.

"
If you're running for president and you have a chance to talk to voters about your plans for the country, you have a couple options. One is to explain your positions on issues, and how you'll help fight for an America where everyone has a fair shot. That's what the President did last week, and it is what the Vice President will do this Thursday when he debates Rep. Paul Ryan.

Or, in the event that you know your plans would actually hurt the middle class, you can just refuse to tell the truth about what your actual positions are. That's the path Mitt Romney chose in last week's debate, and that's what we expect from Paul Ryan this week.

155 The really tricky part of these stories is that Mitt has to figure a way to make the story about them instead of himself.  If he makes it about himself helping other people out, like the kid with the will, then he looks malevolently opportunistic, appropriating someone else's personal tragedy for his own personal gain.  That's why you're not seeing ads about this stuff.  To even bring up this story, the focus has to be on the kid, not on Mitt.  That's an extremely fine line to walk.  I think he navigates it well in this instance, but he'll have to be very, very careful with these stories.

MORE, MITT, PLEASE.

I don't care how uncomfortable it makes him to expose these intensely private and personal moments that he had with these beautiful souls.
He absolutely MUST let the American Voter know about these experiences he's had. He has to let people know who he is on the inside -- how beautiful his soul is.

I damn near could not hold back the tears.

God, may we please, please have a president as good and wholesome as Mitt Romney.

All that said, even if he isn't more forthcoming with those beautiful, personal stories of human goodness and perseverance:

I still strongly believe in the "Preference Cascade" whereby as voters approach having to make an actual decision (as opposed to a few hundred registered voters at a time being solicited by a stranger asking about which candidate they like for being president):::
Voters will gravitate toward the competent, acceptable alternative to Barrack H. ObviousDisaster.

The average non-partisan voter will come realize that he/she is not a bad person for anonymously voting against an incapable president who they think is basically a good guy.

Too much will be at stake. And they won't be willing to risk another four years of this crap.

Still.....  more personal Romney, please.

163 It's about flippen time that Romney started actually promoting himself. I've said it here a thousand times, and I will state it again loud and clear: THE TRUTH NEEDS AN ADVOCATE; IT DOES NOT SPEAK FOR ITSELF. Unfortunately, the Obama-Lie Machine has been working over time to paint Romney as some sort of vulture capitalist or a Thurston Howell III. People believe it. People believe whatever they are told. Romney is probably one of the most decent men that we have had run for office in a very long time, and Obama and his evil minions have basically done everything to destroy this man's reputation and turn him into some character out of a Dicken's novel. Romney, you need to fight back tough, and you have got to TELL PEOPLE WHO YOU REALLY ARE!
