— Open Blogger Earlier this week, outgoing Russian President Dmitry Medvedev laid the verbal smack down in a typically Russian way on Mitt Romney.
"Regarding ideological clichés, every time this or that side uses phrases like 'enemy number one', this always alarms me, this smells of Hollywood and certain times (of the past)," Medvedev said at the end of a nuclear security summit in the South Korean capital."I would recommend all U.S. presidential candidates ... to do two things. First, when phrasing their position one needs to use one's head, one's good reason, which would not do harm to a presidential candidate.
"Also, (one needs to) look at his watch: we are in 2012 and not the mid-1970s."
Does this not sound like a Bond villain? I don't think we can give him any flexibility on whether or not he might have a rooting interest in the results of the next election.
This was in response to Romney on Monday, doing his best impression of a child-sized container of vanilla ice milk in short sleeves:
"...President Obama signaled that he’s going to cave to Russia on missile defense, but the American people have a right to know where else he plans to be ‘flexible’ in a second term," Romney said in a statement Monday.
That sounds good, but unfortunately, he continues. And in doing so, loses some of that punch that we'd like from our nominee.
"Higher taxes, more spending and increased debt are all on the table as long as Barack Obama is in the White House, despite what he says publicly. President Obama needs to level with the American public about his real agenda," Romney continued.
It's nice to see Romney hasn't forgotten about the financial analog to Cygnus X-1 sitting at the center of the American galaxy there in Washington.
But for once, my man, could you stay on topic and come out swinging?
Yesterday, Obama handed the GOP a hand grenade to blow up his re-election. Instead what have we gotten? Meek calls for clarification, I suppose. A pleasant web ad. The Stupid Party indeed.
At least Romney is on point with half his statement.
And now, it's not just Medvedev who's playing. PRAVDA weighed in yesterday with an op-ed endorsing Obama:
"Electing Mitt Romney as the next President of the United States of America would be like appointing a serial paedophile as a kindergarten teacher, a rapist as a janitor at a girls' dormitory or a psychopath with a fixation on knives as a kitchen hand. His comments on Russia are a puerile attempt at making the grand stage and boy, did he blow it..."
Thought number one: It may be that something has been lost in the translation, but the tone here is desperate, not confident.
Thought number two: You can practically see Putin's hands here. One's up Medvedev's back, and the other's up PRAVDA's.
Anyway. Medvedev has extended a hand through the ring ropes down to Romney and invited him to climb up into the ring of foreign policy. The first rule in feuding is: never feud down. Win or lose, you raise your opponen't stature. This is why the incumbent in a campaign rarely agrees to debate the challenger until it's absolutely necessary.
If Romney plays it right, he should be seen to be an equal player in the realm of foreign policy. Chris Matthews certainly seems to think he is. As feckless and damaging as Obama's foreign policy has been, he does have an advantage over Romney of having actually conducted some of it. A good showing in this verbal sparring match would do Mitt some good.
How seriously will Mitt take this golden opportunity? The answer will give us some insight into whether or not he's hungry enough to seriously challenge the president in the general election.

Some things never change. Perestroika, or whatever that was back in the '80's with the Russians was a distraction. They're still working very much against our interests and funding our enemies Iran, Syria, Venezuela and others.
They still hate us and want us dead. And the SCOAMF and his Band of Merry Marxists haven't a clue. Or worse, they want the same thing.

Yup. The Russians have never really gotten the hang of the whole "talk softly and carry a big stick" thing. They always sound like the wannabe tough guy who wants everyone to pay attention to him. As Sam Spade said, "the cheaper the hood, the gaudier the patter".
I sometimes wish Mitt would be more hard edged in his pronouncements, but that's like getting in a shouting match with some of our more belligerent posters. It just diminishes both parties.
I think in the long run, Mitt will be Michael Corleone. You think he's a nice, quiet guy and has forgotten what a jerk you were to him, and then BANG, you get a bullet in the eye.

And seriously, I think the Romney campaign continues to work from the assumption that the GOP nominee has to play nice.
Nobody who has been paying even remote, drug-fogged and sleep-deprived attention to this primary could say with a straight face that the candidates have been "playing nice." Even developmentally disabled chimpanzees can tell that the GOP candidates are playing dirty and playing for keeps.

anyway, so i'm thinking to myself there should be a consequence, but what consequence for outright lying, incitement to cause mayhem purposefully, that wouldn't quell free speech?
so would having mfm have to announce they are clearly bought and wedded to the progressive party , and recently escaped a mental isntitution work?

Romney needs to make a huge shift come this summer. If I were his advisors, I'd plan on running the most relentlessly positive campaign possible.
Romney's negatives are way too high right now. He needs to redefine himself as a positive problem-solver, and he needs to give some fricking specifics instead of warmed-over, second-rate rhetoric. I'd run a series of warm-fuzzy ads which include short summaries of Romney's specific plans (i.e. energy, jobs, taxes).
Any attacks on Obama should be humorous and focused on the president's incompetency. The last thing we need is Santorum-like earnestness. Stay light, but tear the bastard apart with condescending humor.
The only path to election I can see for Romney is to replicate the Bush map. He HAS to win Ohio or somehow replace it with Pennsylvania (which, barring economic collapse, is going to be very, very difficult). He absolutely has to lock down the South, including Florida.
He has ZERO chance in Michigan, especially considering that there will be HUGE turnout due to the likelihood of a Constitutional Amendment protecting collective bargaining rights being on the ballot.
At this point, I think Romney will run better than McCain but worse than Bush. It's hard to envision a scenario wherein he wins the Midwest, especially considering the backlash against Republican governors in Wisconsin, Michigan, and Ohio.
Oh well. Still a long time. A lot can change.

I think you're right- and I think the Republicans stepped right into it by addressing it. They should have maintained their initial stance of "It's a local matter, I don't know the details, you'll have to ask the locals." Yes, the MFM would say (as they did) "GOP Candidates Remain Silent on Trayvon Martin Shooting," as though they should have some comment, but everyone saw through that. Well, except for those we never had a chance with anyway.

Now I am not saying ALL Russians are like this, but obviously the ones drawn to retail are pretty ruthless and unprincipled. And I think that they have that trait borne by 90 years of living under a totalitarian state, where they trust no one and are only in things for themselves.

Okay, here's a completely off-the-wall idea. Could this "bad guy" image that Pravda has painted over Romney end up actually HELPING him? I don't think it will hurt him, since anyone who's going to vote for Romney isn't going to pay attention to Pravda comparing him to, "...a serial paedophile as a kindergarten teacher, a rapist as a janitor at a girls' dormitory or a psychopath with a fixation on knives as a kitchen hand."
Over the top doesn't even begin to describe that little tantrum, does it?
But one of the things that a lot of 'pubs have been unhappy about with Romney is that he appears passionless. Maybe his campaign could play up this obvious fear and desperation from the Russian media mouthpiece to give him a leg up on his foreign policy stance. "There will be no more apology tours for America with Romney in the Oval Office. Other countries know it, and so does President Obama."

I personally do not whine. I am however expressing my active dislike for candidates like Romney and McCain and Dole. I do not like them. I never will.
This election is fast boiling down to voting against Obama rather than voting for the Republican nominee. The same thing happened in 2008. If you will notice, the Republican candidate did not win. I guess I am the stupid one for noticing that.

Because it bears repeating, here was Gen. Patton's take on the Russians:
"The difficulty in understanding the Russians is that we do not take cognizance of the fact that he is not a European, but an Asiatic, and therefore thinks deviously. We can no more understand a Russian than a Chinaman or a Japanese, and from what I have seen of them, I have no particular desire to understand them, except to ascertain how much lead or iron it takes to kill them. In addition to his other Asiatic characteristics, the Russian have no regard for human life and is an all out son of bitch, barbarian, and chronic drunk."
Honestly, I think he's spot on. We share NO cultural similarities. Think about how the Chinese view us: as subhuman filth. Gullible. Worthy only of scorn. Lead paint on toys? Poisonous, adulterous drywall? Fuck it - the Americans are dumb enough to buy it, so they deserve what they get.
Compare Soviet and Chinese military doctrine. You can't because they're identical. Wave after wave of cannon fodder. They spend lives like they are worthless. Innovation and adaptability are forbidden.
The huge mistake Patton points out is assuming that since Russians look like us, they think like us. They don't. They have more in common with the Petchenegs, Huns and Mongols than they do with Europeans.

Timeline, Romney tried weakly to play Reagan swinging out against the evil empire. Shit hit the antagonized fan. Putin smacked Mitt back for being outdated, stuck in the Cold War. Medvedev responded accordingly against Romney's unsolicited slam. And to no one's surprise, Pravda piled onto the rabbit.
All of this occurs as the US provokes war against Russia's ally Syria while Russia AND China call for a stand down of interventionist arms.
There's enough shit to share all around. Mitt stepped into it. Foolishly or purposely, what's done is done. He's smeared as a tease. Whatever his foreign policy, thorns and all, it had better smell like a rose.

Yes - this. As a man thinketh, so he is. None of us could go to Russia and just fit in - match up their world view. That's why the good ones (the ones who think like us) leave there. They don't fit in either. And all to often through history those better people have been the ones worked to death or starved to death, etc.
The Russians will always be our enemy at some level, if only because of the basic fact that every great power looks to its own interests first (except the US, I guess). All other great powers are always seen as antagonists, and generally that's true. If only the US had historically looked after its own interests, instead of engaging in international do-gooderism, we'd all be WAY better off. Our soft heartedness as individuals has been allowed to contaminate foreign policy to a sickening and self destructive degree. It's a disgrace that we act like such clueless saps when dealing with enemies.

That said, whenever I see a documentary on WW2 in the Eastern Front, or read about those epic Russo-German battles, I can't help but sigh and think to myself - it's a shame they couldn't BOTH lose. I mean, ultimately, the Commies were no better than the Nazis. The commies did way more murder than the Nazis, and with no less vile inhumanity. They've since given support to nearly every violent, terroristic group on earth, and caused death and misery so vast as to defy quantification.
The commies were no less worth of annihilation than the nazis, by any reasonable measure.

There's lots of low-hanging fruit that folks like McConnell and Boehner could be hammering on each and every day, but don't.
As usual for criticism of this pair, the quoted observation belies utter unfamiliarity with McConnell's and Boehner's activities. McConnell was on CNBC yesterday in a 6+ minute segment blasting the President for his attempt to hike taxes on oil companies and for Obamacare, and pillorying Democrats for not passing a budget.
Speaking of budgets, the Boehner-led House just passed the Ryan budget and held a vote that defeated Obama's budget unanimously, gaining every Democratic vote even as they protested that it was silly to vote on Obama's budget. Boehner then took the opportunity to slam the Senate Democrats for failing to do their constitutional duty to pass a budget.
Earlier in the week, they held numerous events related to the Obamacare arguments at the Supreme Court.
But you say they're missing the low hanging fruit.
Developmentally disabled chimpanzee: "I don't think these guys are missing low hanging fruit. I like fruit."

I get the feeling he isn't, though. I get the feeling he's hoping against hope that if he's nice and polite (to the Dems, not to his opponents) he'll get that New York Times profile he's been dreaming about every night.

Yeah, they just had your commie asses standing in the snow for hours, waiting in line to MAYBE get to buy some oranges or shit tickets.
Now go back to Mother Russia and get your fucking shinebox, comrade.

No, people resent Romney for many, many legitimate reasons which seem to be ignored by his most virulent cheerleaders for the caricature-like projections they'd rather argue against.
You're only outmatched by Malor on this.

That "this"?! Beware your own condemnation.
People used to travel in order to experience different places, different people, different ways of life. However, you interpret "'different" entirely as a threat, a threat so great that you must terminate it.
THAT is as absolutely bigoted and stupid a premise ever made. As if the world must conform to you in order to be "acceptable". As if your own antagonisms are righteous and any challenge must be ALL wrong.
Russia has always been where Europe transitions into Asia. Of course it's "different". But you're saying that to the extent Russians are not like YOU, they must be eliminated, which is your own jihad. You're also expressing racist and cultural rage against all things Asian.
As if a distinction between cultures is reason to destroy rather than communicate. STUDY and establish neutral common ground. Anyone who has read Tolstoy, Dostoyevsky, listened to Glinka, Tchaikowsky, Moussorgsky, Borodin, Shostakovich, and says that the only good Russian is a dead Russian is worse than a fool. As if Christians have nothing in common if they belong to differing branches, for instance. "War and Peace"
Jean Kirkpatrick reported to Reagan her findings that the length of time during which a country's civilization has been ruled by a dictator reflects proportionately how much longer still before it reasonable to expect that country to function as a Constitutional Republic, regardless of the amount of nation building aide from the USA. Yes, Japan proved unique.
Since the Tsar sold Alaska to the USA, our government has chosen unsuccessful routes in US/Russian relations. Recall that President Wilson sent our own military to Russia during their 1917 Revolution, and abandoned those men he ordered to fight for the losing communists, establishing "modern" Russia's grounds for distrust of American politicians.
Ignorance is not bliss.

Well, you could have fooled me. What we have going on right now: an energy crisis, higher taxes, crappy housing market, inflation out of control, a president who sides with commies, unions out of control, Black Power people marching around, the resurgence of avocado green in home decor, polyester knits showing up in the dress department, and Obama's uncle went to court in a LEISURE suit. It only needs disco to make a come-back and there you are!

120, perhaps English isn't your first language, so you could be forgiven for not being able to comprehend the basics of the posts you're flailing wildly against.
Points for getting "racist" and "bigot" in the same post. For style points next time, place them in separate paragraphs and you might be able to coax a reader past your third paragraph.

Hardly. Look at the big picture, big boy, before choosing to reflect your own cartoon character. I most certainly do not endorse communism. And were you to actually THINK, you'd realize my points' veracity. McCain is no constitutional conservative, and the things McCain advances against our constitution dissolves Liberty. But just because the Russian populace has always had it worse than Americans is no reason to hate them, nor reason to admire the brutality of their governments.
As for me, I advance the integrity of American constitutional conservancy, what many here tag as paleo.
And if you can't see past your own neocon nose, it's still stuck up your ass.

Nice post, Truman.
You know....what good is it, to have a Thug in the White House, if he can't stand up to the other thugs out there in the world.
Putin and Medvedev must have some really good dirt on the JEF....because he has been giving them anything they ask for, since his first meeting with them.

134 #133 They probably have his birth certificate.
It wouldn't surprise me, Miss Marple. .....Putin called him an "illegitimate president, because he wasn't born in America", or words to that effect, back in 2008. It was in Pravda. Some of the blogs here picked it up....Malkin, I think, had it on her blog. .....But then, people became so afraid of being called a 'birther' that they shut up about it.

What would Rick Perry do? That is, if Perry were still actively campaigning for president?
You KNOW he would come out with some slicing, cowboy-themed, boot-up-the-ass remark that would cut deeply and obviously to the heart of the treason we have on record.
And if Pravda had "unkind words" to say about him, he wouldn't go all PeeWee Herman on them either.
Hot damn, I want a fighter as my candidate!

I do not want a CIC who has not only never served in the military but who also has a bucketload of sons who have never served. DUMP MITT ASAP!
