Besides being the right thing to do, it shows a lot of savvy.

Not to get to cold and clinical here, but he's cut a lot of expenses (visits, ad buys, etc.) that weren't going to happen anyway (if power is out, people aren't watching TV, for instance), and he's getting to campaign anyway (using his bus) while associating his campaign with compassion.

I'm not even sure he thought of it that way, it mayjust all be coincidence.  But that's the practical effect nonetheless.

The press being forced to stay in FLA is prime for conspiracy theorizing...

Hey, do y'all remember that         time    when Obama was holding a presser with the White House Press Corps, and then he bailed a quarter of the way through and turned the podium over to Bubba?      Allegedly because Michelle would be mad at him if he kept her waiting?    Gosh, those were good times.      Talk about standing up and making the tough choices as the Leader of the Free World.

74 "The Electoral Map Currently Favors Obama" That's because the "Electoral Map" consists of averages of polls which are undersampling whites, oversampling non-whites, oversampling women, undersampling Independents (clearly breaking for Romney, even according to the slanted polls), undersampling Protestants, oversampling liberals and oversampling Democrats. Capiche? "Republicans Poised To Gain 30 to 33 Governor Seats" Not to be a grammar nerd, but if the GOP gained 30 governor seats they'd wind up with 59 of them. That aside, indeed, the GOP is poised to gain net seats in the state governorships. A 33-17 majority is not out of the question. This is one arena of the body politic in which the GOP largely has avoided self-defeating primary battles and poor candidates. "Romney Uses Campaign Bus To Collect Relief Supplies For Those Impacted By Hurricane Sandy" The chances of that widely being reported by the national media are zero.point.zero. "Incompetence In Benghazi" Understatement of the day. The Benghazi fiasco is the worst scandal in U.S. history, already exceeding Watergate, Abscam, Iran-Contra, Teapot Dome, Tammany Hall, etc. If McCain were president and Pelosi ran the House we'd already be in full impeachment mode.

128 Allen G, have you seen this? Its from Duck Bank, a commenter at Blackfive Listen to this interview with a former member of the Combatant Commanders In-Extemis Force (CIF) that was on call in Sicily. The interview was conducted by Lt. Bryan Suits, a combat veteran of Desert Storm, Kosovo, and Iraq. Just for all the vets, Suits was so severely wounded in the head by shrapnel that he had to learn how to speak, read, write, walk, dress, and feed himself all over again. He's rated 70 percent disabled, but he's still a member of the National Guard. The discussion of the CIF begins at 5:58. Both Suits and "Operator D" say that Panetta is lying his ass off. http://tinyurl.com/9qyehtd While you listen, read this report by the AP. The attack was carried out by 150 men who arrived in technicals. Obama, Panetta, Biden, Dempsey, and Clinton all watched this massive, coordinated assault happen in real time; did nothing except deploy eight men from Tripoli; let our people die; and then lied to our faces about the whole disaster. http://bigstory.ap.org/article/libyan-witnesses-recount-organized-benghazi-attack Spread these links around to as many people as possible before the election.

132 I'm not "impressed," and in the world before Choom Boy, no one else would be either.

I disagree.  The "standard" would be the cancellation of the events, ad buys, and fund raising actions.  To then turn around and use the bus to deliver supplies is not "just the right thing to do," it's an "above-and-beyond" choice.

And, again, I don't think the political aspects entered Mr. Romney's head at all.  Which, in a way, makes it even more impressive, politically speaking.

Posted by: H Badger at October 29, 2012 06:08 AM (n/0Nw)

134 AllenG Also from commenter DuckBank at Blackfive He said that there had never been a rescue attempted under such circumstances. He had a person (former general? I didn't get the name) on the show that claimed that there were NO assets that could have arrived in time, and the battle was located in a residential area, and that in Afghanistan, we often refrain from firing -- and therefore lose people -- under those circumstances. The Combatant Commanders In-Extremis Forces have been used multiple times over the past decades. They've performed exactly this sort of operation everywhere. As for other missions: the Israelis at Entebbe; the GSG-9 rescue in Mogadishu; the BBE rescue of the hostages at Assen--these are only the most famous hostage rescues in world history. For a general to claim such rescues have never been attempted is ludicrous. In the case of Entebbe, the Israelis were up against the entire Ugandan army. In 1994 the Polish GROM helped U.S. forces rescue foreign VIPS in Haiti, an incredibly dangerous mission. It was the unit's first foreign mission. It had been in existence less than four years at the time and had not seen any combat, yet it performed brilliantly. The Marines in the Philipines perform hostage rescues all the time, and the SEALs have rescued hostages from Somali pirate encampments. In Mogadishu we carried out this sort of rescue mission and shot at everything in sight. This sort of rescue mission has been carried out countless times. The men in the CIFs have over a decade of nonstop combat experience. In Benghazi we lost two men in combat with 150 terrorists armed with antiaircraft guns, mortars, and RPGs. The Libyan militia that fought its way to the CIA annex lost only a handful of men. The idea that Obama prevented a bloodbath by acting prudently is absurd. Don't let anyone sway you from what you know is right. Obama let our people die because he cares only about being reelected and forcing his will on this country.

I suspect that it was because he was bragging about Al Qaeda being mostly gone and if we actually had troups fighting against them, that wouldn't be very convincing.

So it wasn't that he was worried about looking like Carter with a possibly failed rescue or anything that concrete, but that he had a political "truth" about Al Qaeda and damned be any facts that got in the way of that.

Can't listen to the audio.  I don't guess someone would be willing to transcript for me?

As for the AP thing:  One, we knew it was a coordinated attack.  This just backs that up.  Two, it's despicable and pathetic how the AP tries to make this bad for Republicans.

Republicans, embroiled in a heated presidential campaign, seized on the confusion. They have accused the Obama administration of being hesitant to call it a "terrorist attack" linked to al-Qaida because that would weaken one of Obama's key campaign selling points — that under his watch, al-Qaida had been weakened and Osama bin Laden had been killed

...

Ansar al-Shariah, the group whose members are suspected in the attack, is made up of militants with an al-Qaida-like ideology, but it is not clear whether it has any true ties to the terror organization.

WTF?  First, we know they are linked.  Second, al-Qaida is the Coke of Terrorist organizations.  Whenever you mean "Terrorist Organization to be determined later" you sum that up as "al-Qaida."

That's just pathetic.

217 Like most of America, I was very upset by the events of Katrina in New Orleans. I grew up in Mississippi, and had family and friends on Coast, NOLA and Baton Rouge. I was 800 miles away and helpless to watch, as well as physically ill at the destruction of the entire Mississippi Coast.

I saw Shep Smith yelping about bodies on the Interstate. Later that night (I think), I had a turning point regarding New Orleans and media hype. Stories were leaking about bodies stacking up in the Civics Center. Rapes in the Superdome. Cannibals loose in the Crescent City.

This was when I laughed out loud: Gerry Rivera, following Shep's pleas on the Interstate bridge, was whining nervously and going hysteric over bodies at the Civic's Center. He was shouting and saying stuff like, things are going to blow, and there will be rapes and mayhem (he was scared, and folks were pacing behind him, but mostly looking at his freak show). He then, after shrieking for America to come save them (him) an elderly black woman came to him with a photo of one of her missing grandchildren (people were all over the place, in Houston, etc in mass evacuations with no one knowing where they were). Geraldo ignored her photo and snatched a 2 year old baby out of her arms. He grabbed the baby's face, pointed her to the camera, then screamed "America, THIS is the face of New Orleans!" The baby promptly starting screaming and crying too. The grandmother looked at Geraldo thinking "You are crazy, man!" And grabbed her grandbaby back. Geraldo was in complete meltdown. In spite of my grief over the Coast and the devastation of Katrina, I started laughing. Since then I have not watched anything involving Geraldo and remain amazed that FOX allows him to broadcast from their network. Maybe after my Benghazi battles with the other networks I will start on them about Rivera, since he has now insulted Judge Woods.

Instead of having a tight center eyewall consistent with a tropical cyclone the "wall" should spread out over a much larger geographic area, bringing the worst of the winds to a wider swath of land as it merges with the big Winter storm north and west of it.

That's why folks are confused about why there is such a big deal about this storm.

It isn't just a hurricane. It is a hurricane on a collision course with two other fronts which will join energy into one mega-storm.

The Perfect Storm was created in the same way.

Jack Straw told us earlier what it was like to live through The Perfect Strorm in New England.

247 The HMS Bounty, a 180-foot, three-mast tall ship, has sunk off the coast of North Carolina, according to WITN.com. According to the BBC, all 16 crew members were rescued, however, other reports state that only 14 have been hoisted to safety. It was previously reported that this was a 17-man ship, however the Coast Guard confirms that only 16 men were on board. The Bounty was used in the making of 1962′s “Mutiny on the Bounty,” starring Marlon Brando, as well as “Treasure Island,” and “Pirates of the Caribbean, Dead ManÂ’s Chest,” reports CNN affiliate WTKR-TV . Oh, I'm sure it's not a coincidence.   But even    so, it's a good description.    "Frankenstorm," or "the    Halloween Megastorm of 2012."   Frankenstorm is just easier to say.

Though "snowicane" is pretty good, too.

I love that movie.  There are so many great moments, from the people running away from Global Warming, to the evil Cheney character's off-camera death.

You couldn't make a better disaster of a disaster movie if you tried.  And many have.  2012 is a dud in comparison.

268 NDH - I am having a hard time to convince my Job Supervisors of that this morning.  We told them to go home and noon and cancel work for tomorrow.  This is a Hurricane coming in from the East (slow moving) joining a Noreaster that is bringing cold weather and snow.  It will slow down and begin to churn up winds and dump rain for hours and hours. We are also at full moon and the tides will remain high.  The storm is so broad (hundreds of miles) that we will get the rain and wind for a couple of days.  PEMA says winds up to 90 MPH, rain, snow and flooding.  We will deal with the floodiing all week.

"Err on the side of caution." THIS is supposed to erase Benghazi US blood from "just say no" Obama's hands and Americans' memory?
...
"Err on the side of caution." Right, and TARP was so helpful, let's do it again:

"All U.S. stock markets will be closed on Monday and possibly Tuesday, the operator of the New York Stock Exchange said late on Sunday, reversing an earlier plan that would have kept electronic trading going on Monday. U.S. stock index futures fell on Monday with investors continuing to fret about the weak revenue picture developing for corporate America, and as U.S. cash equity markets will be closed due to a huge hurricane expected to hit the U.S. East Coast the later in the day."

Barack picks all the losers.

One other thing, as hurricanes begins to decay, forward speed increases but they don't add that to wind speed. So if HC is moving NW at 20 mph with 85 mph winds the first homes on the barrier islands of NJ are gonna get smacked really hard.More like a Cat 2.

286 To all in the Sandy storm, Texans particularly living in GALVESTON and all along the Gulf have empathy for you and hope you pull through well. Good luck.

Of course flooding is going to be bad from all the heavy, sustained rains.

But how do Sandy winds measure against the MAJOR Hurricanes Katrina and Ike that also brought in major tide surges?

In strict adherence to the Constitution, when the time comes that your community seeks federal aid rebuilding highways that Sandy destroys, remember that you owe Gulf Coast Texans and Congressman Ron Paul your apologies for expecting them to do without because of your own prejudices regarding who deserves what and who really counts as Americans.

(Or Jersey's version of them) and farmland and you can always get to museums or the shore rather quickly if you like those places. My comment was directed towards the "Redneck" (that was part of his handle; I'm not calling him that) who did a screed up above. I don't dump on any other states because all states have the good and the bad. They also all have Republicans or conservative voters. I have enjoyed visiting any state I've been to for any length of time aside from seeing their airport.
