Monday Morning Open Thread
— Dave in Texas

Because we need a new one. And I am a giver.

Here, have another cheerleader whilst we compile the results. Also, stupid Cowboys. My long nightmare is over.

BUCKEYE-CHEERLEADER.jpg

I am not a Tampa Bay fan. I am a Tampa Bay cheerleader fan.

Boy howdy.

I'm surprised the eco-fascists didn't try to shut it down years ago. All those plants killed for a parade!  And the local HS marching band drove two semi-trucks full of gear all the way to CA from IN, not to mention the charter flight...

25 So I finished Third in Fantasy Football this year. However, the third place money has already been paid out to the person I beat. The 49ers were credited with a sack (not until Thursday) which put me over the top, now the commish has to collect 200 bucks back from the 4th place team and give it to me. Awkward...

40 I love the Cowboys.  But they have become a loser organization from the top down and it is unlikely to change anytime soon.

[Meddling owner who knows nothing about football + loser son of owner who knows even less about football + yes men up and down the organization] = [lack of leadership (especially from ownership, down through the GM and head coach, and finally the QB) + bad drafts (Julius Jones instead of Stephen Jackson, Felix Jones instead of Rashard Mendenhall, etc., etc., etc.) + mediocrity on the field for fifteen years]

What a waste of effort.  The Cowboys are a laughing stock and the biggest chokers in the NFL.

67 UFC Champ Jacob Volkmann Takes Swipe at Obama: “He Needs a Glassectomy” (Video) The last time Jacob Volkmann tried to make a political statement about the President it resulted in some uncomfortable times for the UFC fighter. Apparently, Volkmann is a glutton for punishment or simply wants to exercise his right to speak freely because he fanned the flames again tonight at UFC 141. After his victory over Efrain Escudero, Volkmann asked UFC analyst Joe Rogan if he could say two things. The first was an attempt to call out the UFC lightweight champion. “Frankie [Edgar], work on your takedown defense. I’m comin’ and I’m taking you down,” said Volkmann. Next he turned his attention to President Barack Obama. “Obama needs a glassectomy. Ask me what a glassectomy is, Joe,” said Volkmann. Rogan obliged. “It’s where they remove the belly button and put a piece of glass in there so you can see what you’re doing while your head’s up your [expletive],” said Volkmann. Rogan gave the fighter a strange look and the quip went over like a lead balloon with the crowd in attendance at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

79 Wow, I didn't know this about Marcus Luttrell (US NAVY SEAL, "Lone Survivor") and Rick Perry: Rick Perry Joined On Stump By Navy SEAL Hero He Helped But also joining Perry will be someone who once preferred to live in the shadows: former Navy SEAL Marcus Luttrell. He received the Navy Cross after surviving a vicious 2005 battle in which three of his fellow SEALs were killed when they were discovered inside Afghanistan while pursuing a Taliban leader… Luttrell later wrote about the experience in his book, “The Lone Survivor.” It is being made into a Peter Berg movie due for release next year. Unlike Forbes, Luttrell isn’t expected to testify today to Perry’s policy. Rather, he will speak to the Republican presidential candidate’s character. In a story Perry himself related to a trio of reporters from the Globe and two other news organizations during a chance encounter last night at Des Moines’s Django restaurant, Luttrell and the governor formed a bond after their own chance meeting on Coronado Island in San Diego… ……Perry told the reporters that after his initial meeting with Luttrell in California, the two reconnected in Texas as the SEAL battled post-traumatic stress disorder and struggled to get off a morphine regimen. Over time, Rick and Anita Perry – the parents of two children – offered him a spare bedroom in the third floor of their Austin-area home. (They still are unable to live in the Texas Governor’s Mansion since it was burned by an arsonist while being renovated in 2008.) Luttrell’s bed was nothing more than an air mattress, the governor related. Perry said he also intervened with Navy Secretary Ray Mabus to get Luttrell the medical and psychological treatment he needed. He ended up being a regular presence in the home for about two years. In 2010, Luttrell established the Lone Survivor Foundation, which is aimed at helping wounded warriors return home.” Also in 2010, he got married. And this past May, Luttrell and his wife, Melanie, had a son.

109 Look on the bright side: you might be a Bears fan. Jerry Angelo is the Obama of the NFL: a four-star, dyed-in-the-wool, all-American, rootin'-tootin' SCoaMF. Posted by: Brown Line at January 02, 2012 10:19 AM Yep, Bears fan here. When Cutler went down, we had a similar awakening as they did in Indy when Peyton went down. Cutler's absence just exposed all the holes in the rest of our team. And watching the Lions-Packers game yesterday just showed how pathetic the Bears are at evaluating talent. The Packers BACKUP QB put up GB franchise record numbers. Granted, the Lions D is horrible, but it just shows how great the Packers organization is at evaluating talent that they could put up 45 points with a backup QB. Contrasting Flynn with Hanie is just depressing as a Bears fan. And then finding out that Urlacher may have torn his MCL and PCL... wonderful. Our D is past its prime, we still have problems on the OL that are masked by the great play of Cutler and Forte and we still don't have very good WRs to utilize the talent and skills of Cutler. Williams needs to go, Hester needs to stick to returns, Knox needs to bulk up and learn to fight for the ball more. Bennett is our only good WR right now. Sanzenbacher shows potential as a slot guy, but that's about it. Ideally, we'd get a true #1 WR in the mold of a Calvin Johnson/Greg Jennings type and then have Knox as our #2 and Bennett in the slot as our poor man's Wes Welker. It was really depressing watching the Lions-Packers game yesterday, because those teams are offensive juggernauts, have young D's which are only going to get better and have great depth. They are teams which are good now and getting better. As opposed to the Bears who have a young offense in its prime that needs to keep improving, but a D past its prime. The next 2 drafts are going to be CRUCIAL to keep from sending the organization back into the mediocrity of the 1990s. With Angelo and his lack of talent evaluation at the helm, though, we're screwed.

Evangel = Good News

Gospel (german) = Good News (first four books of the New Testament)

Evangelical = person who spreads the Good News (Gospel)

The major synod of Lutherans in America is the ELCA, Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.  And it is frankly pretty liberal in a lot of ways, but there you go. Not as conservative as the Missouri Synod or the Suomi Synod

Most (all?) mainstream Protestant churches are fundamentally Evangelical, but the term has become a perjorative used in a derisive manner by wrinkly harridans like Andrea Mitchell who are uncomfortable with people that don't accept the secular materialistic humanism that she and her cohorts in the MFM push down our throats in their semantic-laden newcasts.

Friendly, lovely and vivacious girls, and we are of course gentlemenly and admiring of them.

I like this cheerleader. Great smile, and I've always had a thing for lanky, athletic brunettes. And it's definitely the same girl from yesterday. She has a small mole just above her navel that's visible in both photos.

141

"Evangelical" refers to Christian denominations that take the Bible as the only souce of instruction (for lack of a better word).  Contrast this with the various Catholic churches who have an entire magisterium that is the source of instruction, all ultimately based on the Bible with the addition of logic (for example, in the case of Purgatory).  Or here's a definition from the dictionary:  "belonging to or designating the Christian churches that emphasize the teachings and authority of the Scriptures, especially of the New Testament, in opposition to the institutional authority of the church itself, and that stress as paramount the tenet that salvation is achieved by personal conversion to faith in the atonement of Christ."

That's what "Evangelical" means.  But the press, because they are stupid and simple-minded and unable to draw distinctions, think Evangelical and Fundamentalist are exactly the same thing.  They also equate Fundamentalist with Fanatic and so decide that all Christians are completely and totally batshit crazy out of their heads.
