A slowdown in hiring in the second quarter, which may reflect companiesÂ’ concerns about demand as EuropeÂ’s economy falters, is damping moods of Americans whose spending accounts for about 70 percent of the economy. Another report today showed the expansion cooled in the second quarter.

Think about it. In the days of FDR, way up to Carter and even through most of Clinton, we did not have shit like The Kardiashians and Survivor and Dancing with the Stars. Turning the voters' minds to shit. Except that it is likely that they started off as shit.
We did not have as many dependent on big guv then, either.

Waay off topic, but you better believe that the MFM will be pimping this hard to distract voters from the current economic woes. Moochelle in London. From the Daily Mail:
"With crowds swarming to meet Mrs Obama, it was
a warmer welcome than that for Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney,
who has come under fire for labelling preparations for the event
'disconcerting', sparking outrage from the public and Mr Cameron.
Mrs Obama, speaking at the University of East London on Friday morning, added that watching the Olympics had inspired her father, who suffered from multiple sclerosis, to retain his athletic spirit."
Gag me! Oh, and there is a picture on the DM site that has The Mooch with her arms raised, and you can see her fricking belly button! She is the most embarassing FLOTUS ever! I also think her butt was photo-shopped to appear smaller than it really is in the pic where she is hugging David Beckam.

Sure, but the incumbent's party still ran in the form of Humphrey, and lost. Maybe it was that voters were sick of the war and war news. (I know I was scared, even though I was too young to vote, that the Vietnam thing would drag on for a few more years, and I'd have to go and get shot at!)

It was not as simple as The Vietnam War is Bad! There was more to it than that, including the fact that the economy was a major concern, even if unemployment rates were not high. Inflation was an issue, infrastructure of cities was horrible, strikes and other forms of labor unrest were almost constant. There was a sense that the economy was becoming more complicated, and everyone was scrambling for a piece of the shrinking pie.
Add to that the fact that Johnson was despised, their white knight, Bobbie Kennedy got killed, and Humphrey was a rotten S.O.B., who may have been the only human being on the planet who could make Richard M. Nixon look warm and friendly, and you had the recipe for an R win.
Oh, and Wallace sucking up southern votes didn't help the Dems, although it didn't necessarily help the Rs as much as it eventually would, in later elections when the South abandoned the D party once and for all.

No. Roosevelt had the advantage of New Deal programs LOOKING like they were working, and there was not enough data being released to the public to let them know what was really happening.
So that much hasn't changed. The media still provides cover for their lefty pols, but unlike '36, we can see for ourselves, and people cannot be fooled into believing EVERYONE else is doing well, and it's not just themselves who are suffering.

FDR was re-elected in 1936 because people were scared, and he was re-assuring. He was doing something. The newspapers (on the whole) and radio were behind him. And there were always plenty of diversions for people, just not the mind-numbingly dumb stuff as there is on TV these days.
He was doing something, all right. Making the Depression last longer. There was a bit of a bull market run within the Depression (1933- 34), and the attitude in the country was that "things were starting to look better". The House and the Senate had massive Democrat majorities. The country had turned Democrat because the Republicans had been villified completely by the "Media" of the day. Many more people were Unionized, so this was not as big a jump as it is today.
People now have a lot more information (if they choose to look for it), and can't be as bamboozled as they were in 1936. Or can they? How about them Kardashian girls? The Olympics!

It's also worth noting that when Roosevelt came along, there really wasn't ANY sort of socialist tradition in this country, so when people gave him their trust, there wasn't the same track record as there is today. I think that generation deserves some of the blame, for being so naive as to believe government could and would solve all their problems.
Just like we would be blamed today IF we reelect that Scoamf, knowing everything we do. But we won't. He's going to lose, the only question is how badly.

And LBJ declined to run for re-election in 1968 for several reasons (although he was expecting to get drafted at the convention, and had Air Force One ready to fly him there if the call came).
The economy was OK (actually good, but starting to tip over into bad), but the 60's were full of race riots and anti-war demonstrations, and people thought the country was coming apart at the seams. The war in Vietnam was very unpopular with the Media class, and they were hounding Lyndon about it. Constantly.
But the real reason LBJ did not run for re-election was that he had a bad heart, and it is likely his doctor told him he might not survice another 4 year term (he did die of a heart attack in 1973). This was actually the same reason that Coolidge did not run for re-election in 1928, because he had heart problems.
Humphrey was a somewhat well-liked guy, a true Progressive, in the Democrat party, but the 1968 Democrat Convention was a zoo to end all zoos. The rioting and mayhem in Chicago put the Democrats way behind.
Humphrey nearly closed it up by election day, but not quite. It was a squeaker, with Wallace peeling off the Southern conservative vote from Nixon.

145 - Burt
People in the 1930's were well aquainted with Socialism. They had a big taste of it under Wilson. TR was a big Progressive Republican who advocated a vigorous Federal government in the market place.
The Socialist/Progressives have been getting a lot of play in newspapers in the 20's, even though most people ignored this because things were going so well.
When things stopped going so well in 1929, and Hoover did quite a bit to make things worse, people were willing to listen more closely to this stuff if they thought it would bring their lives back (which it couldn't and wouldn't). John Maynard Keynes was actually alive then and actively giving economic advice (a lot of it bad). And many more of the employed and unemployed in America were in unions, who also made their presence felt.
People today just can't quite grasp how bad things were for a lot of people in the Great Depression. Listen or read about things that Ronald Reagan said about FDR (he admired him greatly) and you can begin to understand how he (FDR) maintained power. BHO does not have the charm, personality or personal/political savvy that FDR had, even though he advocates a lot of the same things. Likewise, he (Obama) has a bunch of buffoons in his cabinet, compared to FDR who actually had some people of ability working for him (but he had his share of New Dealer bozos, and literal Soviet sympathizers).

It's nearly August. The election is in 100 days.
I can imagine him moving on some college loan canceling but it's pretty damned late to for him to do anything else.
If he were going to start a massive giveaway effort he would have had to start it at the beginning of the year.
Sometimes the enemy you face is exactly as he appears to be. In this case, a stuttering clusterfuq of a miserable failure.

Beach volleyball chicks are the fantasy.
Meh. Too lean and energetic for my taste. I like my women a little more soft and yielding; more Marilyn Monroe and less Sigourney Weaver. If I go to bed with a woman, I like to know that I'm not going to have to stop in mid-stroke for a hit off the inhaler.

One may reasonably dispute the outcome in 2000, when the popular vote actually picked the incumbent party candidate (Al Gore), though the electoral-college vote did not.
This quote from the last link still makes me boil. The votes were counted and recounted until the cards were no longer reliable. In the end the counts done by the liberal media had to admit that Bush won the popular vote even as they were attempting to have specific votes disallowed to steal the electorial votes.. The meme put out by the media that Bush did not win the popular vote simply was never true.

Off topic again (and I promise to quit after this) but I just read that the Obammey Administration may be in violation of providing enough set asides, or whatever, for transgendered contractors!!!
What a terrible fucking country we live in! I mean, if we can't protect our own transgendered contractors, who can we protect?

Stabber yelling "You killed my people" at SLC grocery store, victims' blood everywhere. No names released.
SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - A citizen with a gun stopped a knife wielding man as he began stabbing people Thursday evening at the downtown Salt Lake City Smith's store.

Well they suck, then in their spare time they suck, and for a hobby they suck some more. When my mom was in the hospital shit was starting to get critical. This one doctor, Dr asshole I think, says he needs to run and go review an X-ray or some shit. I ran to the lunch room to grab a coffee for my dad, and WHO do I see in line in front of me with a lunch tray? Dr Asshole.

OT - two hours at the urologist and still waiting. WTF is with these f*cking doctors?
Having worked for a couple of surgeons, let me give some possible reasons for the delay:
1. Doctor arrived to office late. (This could be due to poor time management, but also could be due to something like a patient having a lengthy procedure in surgery where a foley catheter was needed, nurses had difficulty inserting catheter--due to prostate enlargement, female circumcision, etc. Urologist who is on call must go in to O.R. and insert catheter immediately since the patient is already asleep).
2. Doctor arrived to office on time but had to wrangle with insurance company to cover tests or surgical procedures, address a lot of questions and concerns from patient/patient's family members (docs usually schedule appointments as routine, brief visits or longer more complicated ones, sometimes routine visits turn into longer consults), had to return numerous calls that came in the previous evening that weren't emergent, but time sensitive.
3. Poor time management by the office staff (ie. double booking appointments, not booking enough time for new appointments, etc.)
4. Doctor has a superiority/God "my time is more important than yours" complex.
In any case, the staff should have come to you and told you that he was running behind, and given you an estimate of how far behind he was. They also should have given you the option of rescheduling your appointment for another day. The best thing to do in the future is to schedule your appointment for the first slot in the day (or as close to that as possible).
I worked for one doc who was very time conscious, always came to work early, had his watch on timer to alert him when the appointment time was suppose to come to an end. He usually ran on time, like clockwork, but sometimes, diagnostic tests would be ordered on that patient (and if they were from far away, they'd run and get those done and come back, so he would have to work them in later in the day so he could go over the results with them), and sometimes, people just have a lot of questions and took longer than they should have (he never just rushed them out). It's hard to stay on schedule, it takes a lot of discipline, and you don't want to look rushed or rude.
That being said, it's only going to get a lot worse. We are talking the ability to get seen in any kind of timely manner is going to be impossible once the full weight of Obamacare kicks in. I'm sorry you are having to spend so much time sitting in a waiting room.

Every minimum wage hike has spiked unemployment. In good times, it historically takes approx 2 years to recover back to pre-hike unemployment levels.

Two predictions:
One, the bastard son of a whore is going to lose in November. Badly. Reagan's win over the peanut farmer will look close in comparison.
Two, we're headed for deflation. If you're in debt now, get out of it any way you can. Default, jingle mail, whatever. Money is going to be harder to come by in the future. You'll be paying off your debt in more expensive currency. Dump the debt while you still can.
Two hopes:
One, Romney's first act in office is to repudiate ALL Obama-signed executive orders. I'd like it privately whispered that Romney's goal is to remove all Obama actions so thoroughly it will appear as if the last administration never existed.
Two, Romney directs the incoming AG to investigate Fast and Furious as his top priority with an eye to having Eric Holder prosecuted for accessory to murder. If Romney does that, Holder's going to sing like a bird rather that spend time in PMITA prison. His testimony will probably bring the SCOAMF down with him.
