More Playoffs
— Dave in Texas

49ers and Panthers at noon O five. Chargers and Broncs after that one. Unlike yesterday's games which were an easy call I have no idea on these.

Has the icy grip of the vortex released you yet? It's gonna be 70 here.

Happy Sunday morons.

5 Peyton Manning and his giant head lead the Broncos past the Chargers today. The early game is too close to call.

off topic, but a valuable lesson for our bureaucrats from the land of Dennis Rodman's BFF:

Employees of ministries and national institutions did the first Friday labor this year on Jan. 10.

They prepared 2 300 tons of quality compost and lots of farm materials in a short span of time.

Officials of the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly, Ministry of Metal Industry, Ministry of Coal Industry, Ministry of Land and Environment Protection and other units went to the Wollo Vegetable Farm in Mangyongdae District with truck loads of compost and spent a meaningful day for the preparations of farming for this year.

Employees of the State Planning Commission, Ministry of Railways, Ministry of Land and Maritime Transport, Ministry of Fisheries and other units carpeted with compost the fields of Rihyon Vegetable Co-op Farm in Sadong District.

Those of the Secretariat of the Cabinet, Ministry of Electric Power Industry, Ministry of Commerce, Ministry of Public Health and various other units did Friday labor at the Ryuhyon Vegetable Co-op Farm in Ryokpho District.

14 I think a lot of the cheerleaders wear body socks of some sort. That is why they look weird. Can't blame them. It has to be fucking cold even when it is not fucking cold due to their lack of clothing.

He used to be funny because he actually had comedy bits with his impressions.  But the bits are all tired and repetitive.  You've seen it all already and its not going to be a new impression or a new premise for the impression.

35 Go Niners! I will mention that it's damn conspiracy how the 49ers ALWAYS seem to draw Joe Fcuk and Troy Aikman as commentators. Both gentlemen have proved themselves to hate the 49ers. Fcuk hates the Giants too, during baseball season. The bias is as strong as MSNBC during a presidential debate.

162 From the local yokel paper today. PA can be such an embarrassment. Flatulence led to Duryea brawl Flatulence fueled a fight between two men in Duryea, police said. The incident occurred Saturday at a home in the 500 block of Donnelly Street, where police responded to a report of domestic violence and found an elderly woman trying to break up a fight in the kitchen. The two men, ages 23 and 30, whose names were not released, said they got into a fight after arguing over "passing gas and bowel movements," police said. A 23-year-old smacked the older man across the face with a hot frying pan, whacked him with another frying pan and threw a small television at him, police said. The younger man suffered cuts to his hand while the older man had cuts to his ear and head, police said. Both were taken to a hospital for treatment of their injuries. Each man was charged with simple assault and domestic violence offenses, police said. The older man also faces drug violations after police discovered drug paraphernalia allegedly belonging to him. Both men admitted to using drugs and drinking earlier in the night, police said. Further information on the incident was not immediately available. Citizens Voice newspaper.

171 Joe Buck proving the value of hair plugs. There are three professions where investing in hair plugs is worth it -- news anchor, sportscaster, and politics. If your job involves looking straight into a camera and sounding authoritative then invest in the damn hair plugs. Sure an occasional baldy can succeed in the business, but viewers prefer hair. The key is you have to mainly do straight-on camera angles. Hair plugs don't cover your baldness in the back, they just give you back your hairline, or at least stop it from going further back. Hair plugs got Biden into the White House. He'd never have been chosen for VP as a baldy. Biden, Schumer, Rubio -- hair plugs are smart for a politico. The hair plugs also matter more the lighter your skin. Black baldness is not a problem, career-wise. The paler your pate, the more value the plugs have to your career. You do get a vagina on the back of your skull (it's where your new hairline comes from) but if your job is to look straight into a camera, nobody will ever see your skull vagina. I don't have plugs and will just go bald naturally, but if I was a politico I'd get them.

Jacques the French Canadian was walking around a neighborhood in Maine, looking to pick up some odd jobs. He saw a guy in front of a house with a gallon of green paint and a brush.

"I was about to go out back and paint my porch."

"Tell you what, you gimme dat paint, I'll go back dere an' paint it. Twenty bucks."

Guy says, "Sounds like a good deal. Knock on the door when you're done."

Jacques takes the paint, goes out back. An hour later he knocks on the door. The guy answers.

"So, you're all done painting?"

Jacques says, "Yeah, I'm all done. But I gotta tell you, dat ain't a Porch you got back dere, dat's a Mercedes."

327 I'm a longtime diehard 49er fan but I gotta admit it seems the refs are helping them out (not on the TD though). But last week I was bitching about all the PI the Packers got away with. It seems to me there is a hierarchy in the NFL: 1. GB Packers - storied, original NFL franchise, most total NFL championships, the Lombardi trophy is named after their coach, they let the multi-billion $$ corporate league fantasize about its small-town roots 2. SF 49ers - came into the league 1950 with the AAFC merger, had a brilliant run in the 80s and 90s with NFL legends Montana, Rice, Lott, Young, still one of the "showcase" franchises 3. Carolina Panthers - more recent expansion team, have had pretty good success but no SB win yet, haven't "earned their spurs" in the eyes of league hierarchy

546 In other niche sport news, MLS (Major League Soccer) is about to see their TV rights fees at least double as Fox and ESPN are bidding for their rights. NBC has already bowed out. It's not much compared to the big sports like NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, Nascar. But their TV rights will go from about $30M per year to about $70M. When they started they were basically giving their games away for free just to get them on TV and drum up interest. Premier League (English soccer) matches get better ratings in America than MLS matches do. MLS keeps growing though. The new TV contract will mean much higher salaries and better players. WNBA, meanwhile, will still be a charity case league if it still exists a decade from now.

579 Jordan kept his crazy behavior off TV and out of the media mostly. Partly that was a different time with the sports press so in love with MJ that they would hide his flaws for him. In today's era of TMZ and Deadspin Jordan would probably have had more problems. I still like Jordan's reason for why he didn't take public positions on hot button political issues, he reportedly said, "Republicans buy shoes, too." I can respect that. I know he's a Democrat. I know he gives big money to Democrats. But he didn't insult me to my face why trying to sell me his shoes. I don't have a problem with left-wing athletes and actors and celebrities if they just don't insult me. I'll give them money if they are great at what they do, I can separate my appreciation for their athletic skill or acting abilities or nice tits. If they could just not insult me to my face while I'm handing over the money, that would be nice. Common courtesy.

Posted by: artisanal 'ette at January 12, 2014 12:12 PM (IXrOn)

602 I actually think professional rugby could succeed in America. They are trying. They are trying to follow the model soccer did and will probably play in the same smaller, more intimate, stadiums that MLS does. For now they are trying to build around Olympic Rugby which is new in 2016. Sevens, not full Rugby, but still. Niche sports are interesting. Professional lacrosse has tried for 20+ years and still hasn't broken out. There are two pro lacrosse leagues in America, NLL and MLL, one indoor, one outdoor. As long as they keep costs low they can survive though as a niche, regional sport. They've tried to expand more in college, but keep getting cock-blocked by Title IX.

Posted by: Flatbush Joe at January 12, 2014 12:13 PM (ZPrif)

603 I watched a little bit of MLS game once, it basically consisted of the players kicking the ball 100 feet up in the air anytime one of them touched the ball.

Posted by: thunderb at January 12, 2014 12:14 PM (zOTsN)

606 Major thing MLS has accomplished is the infrastructure, these smaller stadiums that can succeed with 20-30k fans instead of 100k like in football. Other niche outdoor sports will benefit from this infrastructure. The also make nice outdoor concert venues, better than the giant NFL stadiums usually since few bands can attract an NFL stadium sized crowd.

609 It's interesting to look at the physical infrastructure for sports. It's a real commitment when a city builds dedicated infrastructure for that sport. Of course, on a pure land area and value basis, golf really leaves it's mark on the land. Part of the success of NBA/NHL arenas is they are so flexible compared to outdoor stadiums. A barrier to cricket or Australian Rules Football taking off in America is the playing field is too large for our existing outdoor stadiums. A standard NFL or college football stadium is too small, a cricket pitch can't fit inside it.

Lacrosse is finally making it out here on the west coast. First youth league has been up and running a few years, high schools now playing it as a club sport. I think the fewer sports in the NCAA the better, they obviously can't get out of their own way and it's becoming a talent killer in many non revenue sports.

615 What amazes me are Nascar racetracks. They take up huge, massive areas -- and yet only have one or two big race weekends a year. It's a tough business. NBA and NHL arenas have concerts and the circus and comedy acts when the team isn't in town. There's not many ways for a racetrack to make money. At least not big money, like they make the one or two weekends a year that Nascar comes to town. Pretty much have to make almost all your operating expenses on those few days.
