Mother Jones Magazine Catches Romney Accurately Stating The Dynamics of the Race
— Ace

Seems like this is completely accurate to me.

Oh Noes! There's even more: He says it would be politically helpful to him were he of Latino descent.

I mean, that's obviously so false.

34 I think 47% is low, by the way.

How many people do you see out there crying they want to keep their handout. No matter what it is- then stating they will vote for the guy that let's them keep it. No matter who it hurts or whether it sinks the entire country. They simply don;t care about the first and don't think the latter is possible. But it is and it's coming.

I also think a lot of those people taking handouts see it coming too. Or they've been hurt in ways that has taken that handout or cushy job away.

36 Romney gives a pretty good summation of the situation, there. The hope for America is that many of the 47% of leeches aren't able to drag their drug-addled asses to the polls. And that as many of the normal, sane people (and even the ditzes in the middle who just happen to kind of understand the precipice that America is perched on) are excited and driven to make sure that the vote comes out.

68 We can't expect people who pay no taxes to understand how tax cuts work. No, they understand completely. Whether correctly or erroneously, they feel their slice of the pie gets smaller. Whether tax cuts stimulate the economy and create additional jobs has no bearing to them, as they could care less if the economy improves or more people go to work. Shut down the government for a couple of days, enough to make the flow of govmint teat money to them stop, and they'll let you know their priorities.

80 They will take the quote "my job is not to worry about them" and that will be the lead. Gaffes hurt when they play into the known narrative and this one does. I have mixed feelings. It's all accurate, of course, but you don't want to be caught saying it. Speaking the truth should not be damaging, but when you have the media creating narratives out of whole cloth sometimes it is. I wonder how this plays out. I'm with some of the others, though: as impolitic as it is, I actually feel BETTER about Romney than I did before. 84 37 I think 47% is low, by the way.

I don't.  Yes, 47% pay no income tax, but not all of them are deadbeats and moochers.  The rest of the Dem voting bloc is made up of blank-minded twits, upper income folks who want to salve their guilty consciences, or those who want to publicly preen their moral feathers.

Something fundamental has changed in this election, though.  In elections past, there was little stomach for calling out the freeloaders.  This election, that taboo has been broken, with the benefit that the freeloaders will at least to some extent have to confront their freeloaderness.  That might just be the beginning of rethinking for them.

I actually think that Romney is wrong about something.  How many people of the 48-49% he mentioned, whose mind he can't change, actually think that they will never rise up the socio-economic ladder?

And why does Romney implicitly state that they won't?  Is that a question the MSM would ask?  And of course, not asking it says something.

Do people actually start out at one income level and stay there?  For the rest of their lives?  Actually, they do not.  Why doesn't Romney talk about that?

He is right though, trying to sell personal responsibility to the takers is wasted effort.  Getting the Inds (which he has) and turn out are what turns this into an easy win.

I don't. Yes, 47% pay no income tax, but not all of them are deadbeats and moochers. The rest of the Dem voting bloc is made up of blank-minded twits, upper income folks who want to salve their guilty consciences, or those who want to publicly preen their moral feathers.

I would say 30% are hard-core leftists who want a complete failure of this nation.  Another 10% who were  working Americans but found that the freebies are just too hard to resist.  The other 7% are the people disgusted with not having a good job and will vote accordingly.

I think it's the 7% that Romney is trying to woo.  If we get even 4% of those people, the election will be a mandate.

Yeah, but about half of the ones who think they will rise up the socio-economic ladder think they'll do so by becoming a rapper or a reality TV star, so they aren't exactly long-term thinkers. They'll vote themselves the free shit until that record deal or reality TV show contract gets signed.

I do agree, though, that there is a handful of people who can see themselves rising, despite their current situation.

I take Mitt's point to be that on Election Day 2012, 47% of people will vote their short-term interest and vote for Obama because he's more likely to give them free shit in the short-term, even if a portion of those people want to make it on their own in the longer-term.

The idiocy of the Left on display:   the comments by Romney highlighted by Mother Jones are nothing more than what has been observed about democracy literally forever and in America at least as far back as de Toqueville, namely, that when enough people figure out they can vote themselves money out of their neighbors' pockets, we're doomed.   This "tipping point" hypothesis has been widely noted throughout this campaign season.   Is it really that surprising that Romney would understand it and articulate it?

Re the "Latinos" comment... what exactly is the beef?   Did he say something derogatory about Latinos?   No.   Are we at the point where a Republican can't even use the word "Latinos"?   Well, maybe.   Or, maybe Democrats and liberals are just uncomfortable when Republicans notice that they are benefiting from a politics where support is generated from ethnic or racial identity groups, i.e., tribal loyalties, rather than persuasion, logic, facts, etc.

Zero Hedge-How China's Rehypothecated "Ghost" Steel Just Vaporized, And What This Means For The World Economy

One of the key stories of 2011 was the revelation, courtesy of MF Global, that no asset in the financial system is "as is", and instead is merely a copy of a copy of a copy-rehypothecated up to an infinite number of times (if domiciled in the UK) for one simple reason: there are not enough money-good, credible assets in existence, even if there are more than enough 'secured' liabilities that claim said assets as collateral. And while the status quo is marching on, the Ponzi is rising, and new liabilities are created, all is well; however, the second the system experiences a violent deleveraging and the liabilities have to be matched to their respective assets as they are unwound, all hell breaks loose once the reality sets in that each asset has been diluted exponentially.

133 It's not as if everyone who has a "free ride"is voting for Obama, though. Lots of people vote conservative for reasons of larger import to them(social cons, security cons). And besides that, genuinely needy people are sometimes aware that the bigger threat to their livelihood is people who aren't truly needy sucking up their resources, instead of those who work and actually supply their benefits. The biggest threats to the safety net are freeloaders and moochers.

Of course, this is balanced by rich progressives who pay for their guilt by wanting to raise taxes on everyone. And being assholes, in general.

People don't always vote in the way you'd expect, from the basis of perceived economic benefit.

One of the more irritating habits of commies is their habit of calling some commie bitch as "Mother Ulyanov" or something.

Don't they have fathers, too, or (as I view as likely) they, like "Mother," have no idea who "Father" actually is.

So, unless the woman in question actually is your mother, shut the fuck up about "Mother," OK?

199 lolz, way to go Romney! You'll never get the fabled Obama vote now. We'll just have to go for people who are not on the take

And -- NBC Nightly News just did a top of the fold segment on the Mother Jones videos.

Because, news.

That Reuters poll is the same one that had Obama up by 7 last week.  Would love to see the internals.  D +1- anyone?

202 Shades of when Gingrich called Obama 'the food stamp President'.
Tingles thought that was racist.  Obviously case where 'gaffe' means telling the truth without the sugar coating of political correctness.

The Democrats are the bigger Government party and most of their supporters are 'on the take' from government power in one form or another: govt workers, unions who leverage govt rules, welfare dependents, other dependents, academics who rely on Govt spending, etc. This is not news.

Obama is determined to make more Americans dependents, and he has succeeded in great measure. We dont have 47% moochers, thank goodness, but we are reaching a tipping point where the socialists and their clients of various government panders and redistributions become a near-majority self-interested voting bloc for larger government. And yes, that includes any granny who votes bsed on mediscare.

Romney's REAL error: Writing any voter off. There's not a single American from the poorest to the richest who benefits from economic disaster. So don't assume they ar elocked in for Obama just because Obama bought their votes. As Maggie Thatcher said ... the problem with Socialism is sooner or later you run out of other people's money.

203 I don't know if it will hurt him with voters, but Romney's statement was the most honest one given by a politician in my lifetime.   He framed the election with that statement, got it all out in the open.

If the majority of voters agree with him in November, there's hope for this country.   If not, there's probably no turning back.

204 I loved it.  Posting on some threads over at Yahoo, the lefties are "outraged" but claim joy in that Romney is going down because of this.  Ha - many of the post, like mine were mocking the lefties and singing Mitt's praises.  I think we the producers and those that care about the Republic are sick to death of the American leach.

This election really will decide if there are more who want Free Stuff or Freedom.

205 @198 Yap - Romney lost to Obama back in 94, as Mathews said it just arrogance that he even challenges the light bringer.  Our dear leader has so much going for him Rex - have you seen his rainbow halo?  So, thank you Rex for letting us know that it would be a waste of time - and arrogant - to vote for Mitt when Obama is so much better.

Now, being one of those Mormons, I guess I am kind of weird in that I really like Romney?  I'm sure your correct though and most Mormons really despise Mitt.  As a Mormon I would like to tell you what empty chair Obama told Clint Eastwood to do - but I'll just settle for a simple Bless Your Little Heart!

Thank you,
Big Conservative Mormon fanboy of Mitt Romney who I think is AWESOME!

206 There's going to be a lot of weeping on this blog come November when Romney gets smoked. The fact that most of the posters here cannot see that these were asinine things to say --- in the way that he said them  ---- makes it obvious that the Pauline Kael school of political analysis had more than one campus.
Romney should have learned better communication skills by this point. Come on, this is abysmal.

207 I was a Republican my entire life until the Iraq debacle.  I went to see what Obama was about at a rally and was shocked by the people driving by yelling expletives.  On the way back to our cars, a 30 something man riding a bicycle toward me with probably his wife on hers behind him swerved in an attempt to hit me and yelled at me to get out of the way.  We were walking in a parking lot.  There was enough room for a tractor trailer to pass by me with ease.  This was hate.  As a Republican I had never experienced anything like this.  Since Obama's election my husband and I both have been accosted in public, at work, even in our own homes.  Reading the hate-filled, vulgar rantings in support of Romney illustrates that there is something vile about the new right.  They are plugged in to FOX like a drug, they think all problems can be solved with violence, they are blinded by hate and ignorant of history or facts.  It is possible for corporations to make billions and pay no income taxes . . . it's called 'deductions', 'write-offs', 'tax credits', . . . does that bother anyone?  The oil industry is the best example.  The oil industry is the most profitable industry in the world, yet we 'taxpayers' still subsidize them.  Why is that?  Exxon Mobile was the most profitable company in the world one year, yet paid ZERO in income taxes, . . . and received taxpayer subsidies.  Sound good?  Top oil executives testified before Congress in 2005 at which time they told Congress they no longer needed subsidies and were willing to give them up, yet Congress continued them  Since then their profits have doubled.  I would say they really don't need them now!  This was the worst recession since the Depression.  It was a global catastrophe.  The Republican party has been bought and paid for by money interests the public doesn't know about, doesn't understand, and doesn't care to.  So wallow in the gutter spewing venom and showing your ignorance.  It might make you feel powerful, but it demeans you.  It demeans all Americans.
