Mr. "Cool:" GDP Growth Rate Chills to 2.2%
— Ace

4th quarter 2011's growth rate was 3.0%.

First quarter 2012 is 2.2%. Unexpectedly.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but when it comes to gangbusters growth and economic activity, Obama peaked too soon.

Watch CNBC spin this to make it sound as if this rate beats expectations:

While that was below economists' expectations for a 2.5 percent pace, a surge in consumer spending took some of the sting from the report. However, growth was still stronger than analysts' predictions early in the quarter for an expansion below 1.5 percent.

So it was below expectations, but really, earlier in the quarter less-accurate predictions were for it to be lower than it turned out to be, so, going by those dated predictions, we're really looking good.

1 "So it was below expectations, but really, earlier in the quarter less-accurate predictions were for it to be lower than it turned out to be, so, going by those dated predictions, we're really looking good." Of course, that presumes that the 1Q12 figures aren't unexpectedly revised downward. Wait, why is everybody laughing?

If the O-zero couldn't pass a big gun control package when he had both houses of Congress in his pocket, he sure as hell isn't going to do it with a Republican house and probably Senate working against him.

They can adjust and massage the stats all they want-- people know if they're out of work, if their friends are out of work.

Doesn't matter if everywhere else is going awesomely (and it's not; it's not even being reported as such), people know their situations and will vote (or not) accordingly.

Even if they just want to roll the dice on Someone Else, because they know the hand they have is terrible-- even if they just get a rook and a pawn, that's still better than having their battleship sunk.

124 I told you it was slowing down and it will be much, much worse the next time around if the small businesses in my area are any indication.

It is slower now than at the height of the recession.  Large companies are showing good profits but  us small guys are capitulating.  My business survived the last round and did ok once enough of the competition went under.  But we are getting out this time around while the getting is good.

Good luck with that whole socialism thing.  The small business guys are going to ground now and a lot of us will not be coming back.  I kept my business open because it provided jobs... not because I personally needed the  money.  But with the war being waged on the productive class I don't see any reason to continue.

I was kinda hoping for a candidate who would turn that car around...drive uphill crushing leftist , bloated unions,Cadillac retirement plans for the "gummint" and running over illegal aliens and the lying media in his path. But he is in a Volvo with cut outs in the floor so he can accelerate Fred Flintstone style. He will tap the brakes with his feet, maybe. No wonder he wants to spike the ball over a touchdown scored a year ago.

205 We need a thread on the admiral in charge of the bin Laden mission.

This needs to get out there, because Barky is totally using his "gutsy call" in his re-election campaign.

206 One problem the SCOAMF might have will be caused by the settlement with the big banks over foreclosures.

A lot of defaulters were living in their homes without paying a dime for the mortgage due to the moratorium on foreclosures. That money went for i-Toys and other luxuries, maybe a new car.

I'm sure a new wave of foreclosures will be blamed on Bush and the 1 percenters, so it's all good for Team Cool in their minds

213 So if you troll the troll by out trolling his trollish trollisms in the hopes he tries to out-troll you but fails to appear due to his trial on molesting small animals, do you win the internets? Yes! No, wait...no? NO! YES!...oh, God, what's the right answer here? I know this is a trick question but the clue to the right answer is the FTA and the trial for molesting small animals.

216 I don't find the Obama/Bin Laden memo very damning.

He did what a Commander-in-Chief is supposed to do - said 'do it' and gave someone authority.

Okay, the 'risk profile' stuff is a bit waffly, but I wouldn't have expected anything better from Clinton or GWB.

Hell, the last President who'd had less waffles with that breakfast would have been Eisenhower, or maybe Truman.

217 203 Isn't the SCOAMF counting on the perception of "improvement" to fool the voters again?

The original plan was to use stimulus to buy off constituencies and to use Obamacare to get what they really want (not just gov't control of health, but everything else).

What was supposed to happen was that the American economy was supposed to spring back, regardless of the environmental regulations and the generally private-sector  hostility that this administration has.

A funny thing happened.  The market responded to Obama.
