— Open Blogger Ed at Hot Air notes another episode of "fake but accurate" reporting that has become the hallmark of our MSM.
In this case, it involves a situation where aspiring journalist Mike Daisey with Ratheresque delusions of grandeur, and having learned nothing of eithical value from the Stephen Glass incident, lied about what he had witnessed in China at factories producing Apple products.
Ed laments that the media is helping nobody if they refuse to pay any sort of homage to reality.
...That makes it harder for real journalists to get those truths out to the public, who won’t put much stock into their claims after having been burned by them with the media’s credulous treatment of Daisey until his exposure. It seems that this is a lesson that some in the media never learn — fake but accurate doesn’t mitigate anything. It’s as satisfying as the orgasm in When Harry Met Sally. And it’s sad that eight years after the CBS/TANG memos debacle, Topolsky and the Washington Post want to make an argument that fake but accurate has some merit in the journalistic sense.
What Ed is missing is that, to the left, being "right" is more important than being factual.
This seems to be a mutually exclusive scenario unless you can accept the proposition that to many people whose sense of self-importance requires a heroic view of one's existence, of which the left appears to be a huge cohort, "right" and "wrong" are purely relative concepts, with no more regard for empirical reality & actual experience as is a child's concept of fairness.
So in this frame of thinking, "right" is merely a variable in the equation whose only value is "in accordance with the goals we pursue".
Furthermore, there is no question but that "fake but accurate" has some merit in the journalistic sense, if you accept that journalists are, by a large margin, leftists who have internalized the concept that they are noble warriors for social change. The axiom "In war, the truth is the first casualty" is fully at play.
One cannot create social change unless one has the support of society. And the easiest way to get support is if the policies one pursues are policies that are of value to the larger public. Being the gatekeepers of "public knowledge" arms these journalists with the tool to create the cocoon of "common values"; and common values built on untruths grease the rails for bullet trains to nowhere.
Unlike their predecessors in the early days of journalism who had a decidedly free-market approach to the truth, today's reporters are so entirely sure of their own moral superiority in pursuit of their various utopian causes that the most basic of morals have been twisted into value-neutral weapons predicated on the one truth that rules them all:
The ideological Right "lies" about everything, which is self-evident simply because the policies they pursue are in opposition to those the ideological Left pursues.
Therefore any untruths by the left is absolved by virtue of the purity of the cause.
Like their predecessors, today's journalists have little ability or incentive to leave the reservation.
In the build-up to the Spanish-American war, one reporter sent to Cuba to report on atrocities was reminded that truth is never as important as the cause:
"There is no war," Remington wrote to his boss. "Request to be recalled."Remington's boss, William Randolph Hearst, sent a cable in reply: "Please remain. You furnish the pictures, I'll furnish the war."
We, the American public, have lived in an almost unimaginable period of well-being, luxury and peace. Our sense of what constitutes hardship has been softened by this, so when ego demands that we leave our mark and a tragedy over which we can triumph must be supplied, the doom de jour falls well short of the actual existential crises our preceding generations have had to deal with.
Overblown tragedy after tragedy, racial witch-hunt after hunt, global-threatening windmill after windmill, the left, and particularly the leftist media, continues to provide the wars.

There is no war," Remington wrote to his boss. "Request to be recalled."
Remington's boss, William Randolph Hearst, sent a cable in reply: "Please remain. You furnish the pictures, I'll furnish the war."
I thought Hearst never said that? I could be wrong on that but I thought it's been acknowledged that Hearst never sent a cable saying that.
You know what pisses me off about this is that it's going to hurt the cause of human rights (actual real human rights) in China because why should I or anyone else believe the reporting that's coming out about conditions over there. Good job on giving murderous dictators cover!

Its a deeper pathology IMO.
The 'saying' and belief, that "Perception is Reality" is a blatant falsehood, that people believe enough to act upon. Reality is Reality... and when you perceive somthing different, reality bitch slaps you upside the head...
But the Left believes this saying... and as they CAN change Peoples perceptions, they believe they CAN change Reality. Thus we go from a good line in a speech, that "all men are created equal" to the false narrative that all people are THE SAME... smart/dumb, Man/Woman... all are the SAME, which is flying in the face of reality... but because we are NOT the same, we then have to give an advantage to those who are 'less' to create the 'perception' of equality...
Thus, they think that the Laws of Thermodynamics and Physics are not in effect, and Man IS causing global warming through CO2 because they 'Perceive' it to be so....
Thus the 'Fake but Accurate' meme goes with this belief.... if they can get enough people to 'Perceive', it becomes 'Reality'.... problem is that its NOT TRUE...

I can't say I'm all that interested in this story. Essentially what you have is a reporter guy who is a lying liar who tells lies. Ho hum.
What I find interesting is that the end result is to discredit a report that made Apple Corp. look bad. Now, I don't know if Apple Corp. is doing EEEEEVIL things over there in China, but I do know there are people in this country who hate Apple Corp., and there are people who will do anything to defend Apple Corp. against any accusastions of anything.
Those of us who aren't there, and don't have access to all the information, we'll never know. It's like watching two carnival barkers though, one who is saying his show is the greatest thing on Earth, while the other one is saying it's the worst, and that his is the best! I'm just going to shrug my shoulders and walk away from both. Maybe go have a corndog with Michele Bachmann or something instead.

The hoary claim that the yellow journalism of William Randolph Hearst and Joseph Pulitzer brought on the Spanish-American War is often asserted but never persuasively substantiated.
It's a notion that suggests the worst tendencies of the news media - that in extreme cases, they media can plunge the country into war, as Hearst and Pulitzer supposedly did with the sometimes-inflammatory content of their New York City newspapers.
Although the claim was long ago demolished as a media-driven myth, it remains too good not to be true, too delicious to resist

I learned a lot from the Stephen Glass incident:
The MSM can lie their asses off and publish pure fiction (with some of the most ridiculous names one could think of) and nothing happens to the magazine or anyone who was working there and gave their okay to the fictional stories time after time. And then, you can have a movie made about you, while the joke magazine continues to publish others' fiction ... again with no repercussions at all.
That's what I learned from the Stephen Glass affair.

Not that I have any problem with whoever can afford one owning a home- but the very fact you're pushing for "diversity" in home-ownership means you're less concerned about people being able to afford them, and more interested in some quota of people of different races owning homes.
This is EXACTLY what led to the housing meltdown of 2008.

Just a random FYI...there was an interesting article on Glass in the ABA Journal this month. He graduated from Georgetown Law (they're certainly picking winners, no?) in 2000 and passed both the NY and CA bar exams.
He was forced to withdraw his application for admission to the NY bar because he was going to be denied on character and fitness grounds.
He also got denied in California, but has gone through the appeals process, and the California Supreme Court is going to hear his case very shortly. The case might get a lot of publicity.
[Also - I'm hoping this formats correctly since the few times I've posted there are always spaces missing from my sentences. What's up with that?]

all other truth flows from these two truths. If Obama decides that we don't need to use so much oil, then you are within the truth to say that we cannot drill our way out of a shortage (which doesn't actually exist)

It actually came from the beginning of the "swashbuckling" period in Europe. England had outlawed dueling, and part of their propaganda against it was how useless the Rapier was as a sword of war (and it's pretty freaking useless as a sword of war).
So the English sword masters (it is said) would hold "demonstrations" where they'd have about a half-dozen of "their best students" attack them with rapiers. The sword master would then defend himself with a quarterstaff (which really is the preferred weapon for defending yourself against a rapier, in fairness).
Few people seem to have thought about the fact that, if they were only trained by the English sword masters (who didn't look highly on the rapier) that their "best students" wouldn't be all that good.

OBAMA: i understand now that the governor of the state of florida has formed a task force to investigate what is taking place. to do some soul searching to figure out how does something like this happen. and that means that we examine the laws and the context for what happened. as well as the specifics of the incident. but my main message is to the parents of trayvon martin. you know, if i had a son, he would look like trayvon

Who fucking cares what your fictional "son" would look like. The correct response is "This is a matter for the local authorities there in Florida. I have full faith that they will carry out their duties." End of fucking comment. Why the hell is the FBI involved. We have to get this statist out!!

How's that poem from Obama's coronation go? If it's yellow, let it mellow, if it's white it must do what's right...?

Which is why many of us in the 'sport' rapier community (WMA, SCA) are transitioning to Cut and Thrust techniques, which are much closer to Saber Fighting, which WAS Militarily useful for hundreds of years...

You did not have to issue your challenge in person (a letter or messenger would suffice) but you could only choose a champion (someone better suited to fighting than you) in certain, very limited circumstances.
You could always have a Second, though, and most people chose the most competent person they had available.
Posted by: AllenG (Dedicated Tenther) SMOD 2012 at March 23, 2012 07:51 AM (8y9MW)
Yeah. I like Cut & Thrust better than rapier. I like Saber better than Cut & Thrust. And you can (if you look and have the time) still find Saber schools. Their fencing rules are weird, though.
And, yes, once guns made armor more-or-less irrelevant, the Saber was the most practical war sword available.

There have been 36 murders already this year here in Baltimore and O'Fuckstick's home town of Chicago has already reached the vaunted 100 landmark. Has he bothered to comment on any of those?

Part of the 'Code' decreed whether it was a Personal, or Legal Matter. Personal? you had to fight yourself if able... Legal, you could have a Champion... (or, if you were a Lady).
Remember, in many countries it was Legal to put a Legal question to "God" through Combat... as God would not allow 'evil to triumph'...

Hmmm, 28 y/o hispanic dude shoot AA teenager wearing a hoodie...
Could be if he used the word "coon," he was referring to the Cartmann costume from South Park. Which honestly, would be as likely a possibility as the racial epithet.
Still, cops investigated, and decided not to charge the guy. Why do lefties love the cops when it's about getting more "stimulus" money sent to cities, then hate them when they investigate something and it doesn't go their way?

My guess is, Zimmerman wanted poor lil' Tray to justify his presence in the neighborhood, poor lil' Tray chimped out on Zimmerman and started to beat his ass, and Zimmerman shot him in self-defense. Zimmerman is gonna get railroaded.

As someone who fights rapier mellees.... involving HUNDREDs of combatants (Pennsic)... I'll take Three Rapier and Dagger fighters of my school, over just about anyone with a Q staff...
But then again, we actualy TRAIN in how to fight together... Qstaff can only engage one opponent at a time... the other two should have free attacks to an open quarter...
But then it wouldn't make as good of a story, would it... /smile...

This is a very informative post. It also brings to mind the Bush letter and Rathergate. The need to be "right" to fit their narrative, versus they need to be correct to fit the truth. Unfortunately, the MSM will continue to adjust the news to more and more fit their "narrative"

The local DA is going to lean very heavily on him to plea-bargain, so they can bundle him off to jail and avoid the difficulty of a trial.
If he stands his ground and does plead innocent, it's going to be him and one nervous public defender against the combined weight of all state and Federal law enforcement agencies and attorneys, plus the ACLU, $PLC, Sharpton, Jackson, and who knows who else.
And if he somehow manages to get acquitted . . . his life will be a hell of fear, petty harassment, death threats, and media character assassination.
Right now the only thing that could save him would be for him to discover he's gay.

Legalizing dueling.
In fact, that could have a salutory effect on manners generally speaking.

Nearly 1,000 Pakistani women ‘killed for honor’
al arabiya reports Pakistani Parliamentary praise for legislation providing women a sense of equal status with men that no one enforces. Lip service is worse than outright denial of rights, as if promising women protection when only setting the women up for execution by family members who will not be prosecuted for murdering female kin.
Funny thing about a law is that it's only as effective as its enforcement proves. (Take US border security and the federal refusal to enforce border control, and refusal to enforce immigration law; rather, the federal funding of illegal immigration as is.) In Sharia controlled society, the only laws enforced regarding women's rights is that they have no legitimacy. So Parliament can pass laws granting women superiority status over men; it wouldn't mean squat.
Would Rush Limbaugh crusade consistently for Islamic women's rights?

No signs of a scuffle would be left after the autopsy. Funeral home does not get the body until after the coroner is done with it.
