— Dave in Texas She needs a hug.
Perhaps we should delay the election, on account of the hurricane and all.
If Obama is ahead right now, why wouldn't they want to close the deal a week from today? In a week, you can set up provisional balloting from the equipment in the back of the warehouse (paper, meet pencil), get generators in place, do all the necessary stuff to make sure voting can happen in a timely and on a constitutionally mandated date. Generators. Magical, earth-hating machines that are making electricity all over the northeast tonight.
It is completely possible to hold this election in seven days.
Hey MSNBCry, your guy is ahead? Why lose the advantage?
Unless, and I'm just spitballin here, your guy isn't ahead. And you're hoping/wishcasting/pleading that circumstances change, and somehow Obama can actually swing the momentum back to him. Three words:
He can't.
Let's ask America a more fun question. Would you like to see Obama campaign for another month?
This is desperation (and by desperation, I mean despair)

Only congress can change the election date, so he gets his lawyers to try and claim all the states effected by the storm voted D in 08, so obviously they would do the same this time.
Hence, JEF wins all the NE and mid west by default.

The blue states of NY, NJ, yada yada (Fire Island for heaven's sake!) were going to vote for him anyway. He will have those electoral votes. So give them all paper ballots with their food and water and get this over with. I say this sincerely. I helped give out hot meals at a Salvation Army place in 2005, wealthy people and others without power needed food. They will need it over the next week. Give them a ballot and tell them to mail it in if places won't have power. There is such a thing as, uh, GENERATORS, Andrea Pock-mark Mitchell (high definition teevee is not kind to her. Honey, there is also something called dermibrasion at any dermatologist or plastic surgeon. Seek their help. This is free advise from a former supermodel. You need help. Maybe it will help you not think like a Democrat leftie biased bitter hag).
Once the waters recede, the question I have is if there are enough National Guard in NYC or NJ to contain the riots when there is also not enough food and drinking water for a few days? I hope not, but after Katrina in NOLA, well...Not to be concerned, 5% of Newark has power (a place that was way scarier to me than New Orleans in daylight near Penn Station).

Romney should flat-out ask one of them. "Andrea, these are all blue states, their votes aren't changing. I'd be perfectly happy doing your job in ferreting information out on Benghazi and correcting the jobs reports for another month, but the only way this helps your choice, Obama, is if you're suspending elections entirely. And you sound like you'd like to. Do you?"
The video would be priceless.

If one part of the country is handicapped by a natural disaster their vote in that system counts as much as it would under normal conditions.

However, if they manage to stir themselves into a frenzy over how Gaia disenfranchised the voters of NYC, Trenton, Newark, and Philly, I wonder if things might not get ugly.

If, by Almighty God's Amazing Grace, we win, we need to short-circuit that feed-back loop. Make them start from square one and make them disprove that we're a nation with a government, and not the other way 'round.

White House Insider says the Chicago re-election bunch is having cake/party-hat time. They see the storm as the crisis they needed. Romney suspended the campaign for two days while Ebola goes out and looks "presidential" (cough, cough) in his concern for the country. Benghazi also goes away in favor of storm coverage. WHI says House members who previously said they'd go to bat over the massacre now say the storm is more important.
He's quite worked up about it. Voters likely changing their votes? No, but Chicago glee seems like a huge invitation to more voter fraud IMHO.

BignJames: Most charities want cash - it's more flexible - but the point I was making is that SA doesn't waste a lot of money on executive salaries and other overhead. Church groups are also good because they are more truely volunteers than something like the RC or United Way.

The relief efforts at the Astrodome for the Katrina refugees were organized somewhat "Texas" style. Simple and direct.
Donating cars drove into the parking lot and off loaded their donations (with volunteer help). Refugees ambled out of the 'Dome and helped themsleves to the clothing and supplies. Git 'R Done!

The literal translation is "hand and hand," but idioms aren't always exact.
For example, you say "en autobus" for "by bus" even though a literal meaning would be "in bus." (Had Spanish in high school and college.)
I don't know whether it should be "mano y mano" or "mano a mano," but when Bush said it, he said "mano y mano." And that's how I've always heard it since that report first caused me to notice the expression.

Quote from Andrea Mitchell: "We checked with the Red Cross. The Red Cross said, well, they are always grateful for donations, but this is not what they need or want. That they always tell people, please donate money."
First, the Washington Post story mentioned that Mitt's event included info on how to text monetary donations to the Red Cross.
Second, the Red Cross was saying the same thing it always says: what they need is cash, blood, and volunteers.
I don't think any charitable organization is ever going to say, "We don't want you doing that." So what I suspect is whoever called the Red Cross "led the witness." Example: "Do you want some volunteers to bring food over there, or do you prefer cash donations?" And then used the RC response to generate this news.
And think about that: In the middle of this effort--which is dominating the news cycle--they call up the Red Cross to coax an answer out of someone that they can then also use air time to bash Romney with.
The news is not Sandy. It's not the relief effort. It's that Romney's contribution isn't what's really wanted.
When have you seen a popular Hollywood star or musical celebrity hold a charitable event and a major news organization spin the report as, "They say this is for charity, but it looks like a rock concert. We called up some charities and they said they'd prefer a large cash donation from the mega star to this publicity stunt"?

That's absolutely true. My Dad told me several stories about exactly that - the GI's had to pay 10 cents for a cup of coffee and a donut from the Red Cross. He refused to donate to them the rest of his life. I will not donate to them for exactly that reason.

Well, we little 'uns used to trick-or-treat for Unicef, back in the day. People often put foreign coins in the little orange box -- I guess it was a way to get rid of leftover pocket change from that last trip overseas. I used to "buy" them out of the box by swapping them out with American coinage of similar size, because I thought they were neat.

I am an old man living on the Gulf Coast so I've seen them all. If you donate to the Red Cross you're wasting your buck. I did some volunteer work with a public health nurse back in Betsy (1965) and the Red Cross refused to come into the flooded area until the water went down. During Camille (1969) they were no where to be found for days and much was left to local organizations to assist those in need. For Katrina the greatest help was the Salvation Army, local churches and (believe me on this) Wal Mart.
The Red Cross will always ask for money which for some days following these storms is quite useless. Supplies are more important when grocery stores, drug stores, etc. have themselves been destroyed. When they come hustling, save your buck.

The Red Cross can't afford another public relations firestorm. They're still living down bad feeling from WWII.
The word from my mom and dad was that soldiers had to pay for Red Cross donuts or something. Whatever it was, people were still griping about them, and refusing to donate to them 60 years later.
I encountered that first hand in San Diego in 1971.
I had to pay, but the wounded actually got them free.

What drives me extra crazy is my son is actively trying to get her pregnant. And he doesn't even have a place of his own...lost his in the divorce and is living with the girlfriends relatives. I'm not a prude or anything but jeez looeze, talk about doing things ass backwards. How 'bout trying to get back on your feet and get your own place, for starters.
This certainly isn't the way I raised him but I also realize I can't forbid him from what he's doing. But I will make him pay for his bad decision making because I sure as hell won't support him - financially - when things go to hell.

Just know you're not alone CB. Wish you luck and will talk with you later. And keep planting seeds with your son.

I was in a situation like this about six or seven years ago. The thing is, after awhile the emotions turn into homocidal rage once the person realizes he's being taken advantage of. It's a learning experience in how to properly evaluate relationships, and not see them as a reflection of your own attractiveness and desirability. It's easy to feel, despite past evidence to the contrary, that you'll never find anyone else. It's weird.
Sorry, Christy. Stay strong.

Thanks. It was nice to implode here. He "thinks" it is over, but "is going to give it one more day." I told him if she keeps this up I am going to have a chat with her about her little games (she is 25 yrs old). I hope he tells her that, as she knows The Christy takes no prisoners.
Thanks Jimi and others. I may stay out of jail in spite of the crazy. Where did I put my nerve pills?

This makes more sense than anything. Thank you all. Will self-medicate now and try to stay out of prison.

No need to apologize. I am asking advice from morons!
Tickled Pink...honey, you don't want him right now. He is good looking, but pretty messed up thanks to this little red-haired chupacabra. Prior to the last six months I'd say he was quite a catch, as he is a very nice and smart guy. Hopefully he will get some sense and get mad and all will be well with the world again. If Barky wins I am going to riot, and I may do this in her front yard.
I don't "get" women and game-playing and reality-show type mentality. I have brothers and sons. If I never hear the word, "issue" again it will make me happy. I would like to give her a brand new "issue" with a piece of my mind. So far I have stayed out of the entire six months of fubar.

Ask him to take himself out of the story and picture this scenario with a good friend of his. What would HIS advice be?
Posted by: JR at October 31, 2012 12:24 AM (adOUE)
He has heard it all. I think he is finally (maybe) going to come to his senses. If he were not a lot taller and stronger than me I would put him in a time out chair or tie him to the roof of my car for some fresh air (with him holding a Romney/Ryan poster).
I told him, last night, that she is never going to improve to the point she is not dealing with all of her infernal "issues" or, uh, stable, and uh, who he wants her to be in this fantasy relationship. Which means, in normal terms, that she is often taking offense by something one of her relatives say, and having texting dramas and sulks and shunning of her wacko dysfuncional family members.
She had better be glad I am not her Mama as I'd smack her like Scarlet O'Hara did Prissy when Prissy did not know nothin' about birthing babies. I despise drama and chronic whining and Honey Boo Boo and Snookie and the Kardashian type mentality of reality tv.
I am a nurse. I will listen, sympathize, take control and tell you how to fix whatever. I will wait patiently for you to do just that. But six months, honey, and I am done and it is time for ChristyGoesBananas.
Last night, I listened patiently for the millionth time. I was calm on the surface. I listened patiently, told him to have self-worth as he was like this before he met Ms Issues; and that he has had everything but a billboard and a plane with a banner flying overhead proclaiming "She is not right for you. Flee." Every.Single. Family member have told him he is lucky to have gotten out of this mess before marriage and good riddance. My husband laughed when he heard I said that, as I am normally tactful. It is time for either tough love or Christy pays a visit to the evil person occupying son's brain and messing him up. I will give her a choice: leave him alone, even when he tries to "work on her issues" with her; or expect the wrath of Christy forevermore. And it will be scorched earth, y'all. She does not know what her offended heart has endured until she deals with me...again, keep in mind I have never had a cross word or argument with her. I admit she always sort of irritated me, but she grew on me. We have all taken many trips with her along. We have put up with her chronic whining and her bazillion pieces of Vera Bradly luggage.
I really do not think she ever wants to see us again, as my other son is my clone, and my husband and daughter-in-law are also not pleased with her. I'd say this is done, but her name keep popping up even though it is forbidden to be said in this house. Harridan or "her" is permitted. Thanks, again, for y'all's advise last night, morons and 'ettes. I appreciate it. Jimi made a lot of sense.
