Must-See Video of the Day/Open Thread
— andy

At first I thought it was an aerial view of one of our presidential candidate comment threads, but upon closer inspection ... ... it's just a massive shark feeding frenzy off the coast of Australia.

No word on whether Obama has apologized to the sharks yet.

Had a pastor at a former church try to make a point along these lines.  That you can take a handful of exactly the same thing and put it in two different places to get entirely different contexts.  A handful of earth thrown in your vegetable garden is soil.  A handful of earth thrown on your kitchen table is dirt.

I don't remember the point he was trying to make, unfortuantely.  Probably something about how we were all bad congregants who needed to give more to the church's "social justice" fund.  I dunno.  I'd stopped listening to this guy and had moved on to playing Liberal Pastor Bingo in the margins of the newsletter.

As a computer nerd type,I get annoyed when either movies or TV shows get the facts wrong about some of the stuff I deal with.

I have yet to see any movie or TV show get anything remotely right about computer technology. I think even if they know what they're doing, computer nerds doing real computer stuff just isn't visually compelling watch to watch.

But they get nothing right. The interesting thing though, is that most people assume they get anything write about anything else, either. If you knew about everything, you'd know they largely get everything completely wrong.

I don't know anything about everything, but I know enough about the media to know they don't know shit from shinola.

They know how to read script in a dramatic fashion while posturing as a position of unbiased authority. That is what they do, and do well. It should not be any wonder why it's so often the career trajectory of beauty pageant winners who think everyone should have maps, even children in the Iraq.

I love this singularity bubkis. Computer technology is advancing so fast, yadda yadda yadda.

The logic has not changed since they were invented. We're still playing out all the variations on the same thing, is all, it's still rather infant.

Computer technology has advanced in much the same way internal combustion technology has advanced. Cars keep getting faster and faster and faster... soon no doubt they will develop conciousness and rebel against their human masters.

Um no, it's just a car. Obviously that's silly. But with computers, lots of people assert we're somehow getting closer to conciousness, based on the fact that we are getting calculators to do basic arithmetic faster.
