NASA claims debate wins over Mayans*. [krakatoa]
— Open Blogger

NASA, finding that putting humans in space, much less on other solar bodies, is far too demanding has taken to debunking the Mayans.

(As an aside -- shouldn't they just drop the "S"? I guess "NAA" just sounds too negative.)

That whole 2012, end-of-the-world thing? Head of the Near-Earth Objects Program Office at NASA Don Yeomans says it's all a bunch of hoo-ha.

If that's not enough to kill your sense of wonder and doom, another NASA brain with apparently plenty of free time now that they aren't in the Space business anymore has gone and debunked this:

mayan-light-beam.png

Now if only they could apply some of that logic, deductive reasoning and common sense to other doomsday myths, like, say, the whole AGW cult, they might actually start to redeem themselves. Ahh...Who am I trying to kid? I won't be satisfied til I get my air-car and a condo on the moon.

* And let's be honest -- winning a debate against dead people is hardly impressive compared to the Apollo program.

18 NASA needs to return to its roots. It was created out of NACA in 1958. NACA was the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, which was formed in 1915. It was a very small government agency which was tasked with conducting aerodynamic research and developing new technologies that could be used by the private aviation industry. NACA did not build its own planes or operate its own airline, but its research was a great benefit to the aviation industry. This is what NASA ought to be doing, which will stimulate the private space industry.

46 It always baffled me why this got any traction. What is it that makes people think long defunct civilizations that were woefully primitive by our standards had any special hidden knowledge beyond our current abilities?

The Mayans could see the end of the world coming, centuries away, but not the collapse of their own civilization within a few decades?

Also, when I get to December on my calendar I don't assume that is the end. Merely that it is time to buy a new calendar. It seems the only thing that ended was the Mayan retail calendar business.

The University of Northern Iowa is cutting programs and, as a result, tenured professors:
http://tinyurl.com/83re4su

As a note, tenure doesn't protect you when your program is cut.

Here's a full list of program cuts:
http://tinyurl.com/7ccmbc6

The University of Northern Iowa is a former teacher's college and still functions that way, so the loss of French and German teacher ed is unfortunate but they didn't graduate many students so I guess French and German Iowa teachers are coming from other schools.

By the way, did I mention that the faculty is unionized?  I should have mentioned that.

Look for...the union la-bel...if you want to...be out of...a job...

The union's putting up a fuss, but they aren't suggesting any cuts of their own.  Just the usual "shut up, you do have money" BS.  But I guarantee you that their union brothers and sisters in other departments ain't going to give up squat so they can keep their jobs.

She hands out lists of vocabulary words, some of which are actually correctly defined. But for those that aren't, we face a dilemma: tell our son on tests to go with her definition (which in some cases is hopelessly wrong - not even close), or to go with the correct definition, and risk arguing with her about it.

93 Oh, and at the moment I'm actually on the laptop at the local police station.  Waiting for Wolverine, it's Lineup and Lunch day.

..... yeah..... about your ability to foretell doom....

Always wanted to meet a fortune teller, ask him/her if he/she were getting any particular vibes, then deck 'em.

"Ha! Didn't see that shit comin' didja?"

96 Dear NASA:

Please stop fucking with the ancient Mayans.

And thanks for all that Muslim horseshit.

Sincerely,

97 Jay, you just HAVE to send one of her emails back with corrections in red pen. And a smiley-face.

98 Send us up the bomb.

99 Could the Mayans be sending us a message from our Alien Ghost Angel Giant Forebearers? Back to take your calls, but first a message from our new sponsor Invisible Foods Online. For all of your post apocalypse dining needs.

100 SOS

Any thought that Wolverine might get into trouble from HR since he was on his own time?   Especially since he got hurt while going undercover.  I hope not, but it seems sometimes employers do stupid stuff.

Posted by: someone at March 10, 2012 09:15 AM (bqjJT)

101 SoS,  I thought I missed the episode about the e-mail that Che-Boy's supervisor sent.  I guess you never went into too much detail, for good reason.

I'd need a carton of red pens. But I don't want to drop my son in the soup, and I get the impression that she is not the most open-minded of people.

And I won't get started on the science bullshit. I'm a (no-shit physical) scientist, and a lot of what passes for science is liberal pap. #2 son was shown "The Story of Stuff," which was complete, unadulterated crystalline Marxist horseshit, narrated by some stupid sanctimonious bitch who had no idea what she talking about. You can view on StoryofStuff.com if you want to piss yourself off.

104 The mayans didn't account for leap years. If you add up all the leap years we would be in July, 2013 right now.

105 Jay,  all the soothsayers know about you and give you a wide berth.

106 "SoS, I thought I missed the episode about the e-mail that Che-Boy's supervisor sent. I guess you never went into too much detail, for good reason."

Ya, I can't really cut and paste the emails - that would be a direct violation of one of my NDA's, so I have to paraphrase and hopefully give the gist of it.

Basically he sent out an email to everyone saying that it was my fault that they couldn't wear Che T-shirts because I went to HR and whined, and he sent it to everyone in our group.  He didn't mention me by name in the email, but made it abundantly clear that he'd be more than willing to give people my name if they asked him about it.

That's when I shot an email back to the whole group and let them know who I was, and that his email was bullshit.  I didn't involve HR, he did.  I figured everyone would know who I was anyway, and I was going to try and hide from these dirtbags anyway.  Lol.. in retrospect I could have handled that one better, but oh well.  Got the point across I guess.

108 I think I saw the SOS "Che shirt" story the morning after he posted it, but I've missed every subsequent one. Can't wait to catch up with it at the compilation link. Sounds like I've been missing a doozy.

110 "Any thought that Wolverine might get into trouble from HR since he was on his own time? Especially since he got hurt while going undercover. I hope not, but it seems sometimes employers do stupid stuff."

Well Wolverine doesn't technically work for the same company I do, the security firm is a 3rd party contractor that my company hires to handle such things.

I don't think it will be a problem though, I sent of one monster email this morning to both his boss and the Managing Director of my facility, telling them how incredibly grateful I was to have such an outstanding individual making sure I got to my car safely.

I went on and on about how amazing it was that he would go to such great lengths, way above and beyond the call of duty.  I told the security company they were damn lucky to have someone like that working for them.  I also told my Managing Director that I would appreciate it if she could contact the security company directly and convey to them what an outstanding employee they had in Wolverine.

I'll be following up the email with a phone call on Monday, hopefully the Managing Director will as well.

So I think he'll be ok on that front at least.

111 What amazes me is: Che-Boy went to HR to complain and Che-Boy's supervisor got himself/herself involved.  I used to be a supervisor.  I would never have involved myself in this crap.

There are/were a lot a retards working there, not counting you, the nice HR lady, your supervisor, the MD, and of course our Hero, Wolverine.

Well refill your coffee and fetch some scone's first.   Like I said, it's one seriously long ass post.. lol

113 111. Yup... I just got caught up. Stuck, you have a flair for writing. Once the dust settles.... you should seriously consider writing a short story based based on your episode. Im sure you could get it published or promoted on line. btw.... We need way more Stucks and Wolverines in this world. You tell him more than a few folks are now fans of his. That man has more character than the entire planet's worth of Che-boys.

114 "What amazes me is: Che-Boy went to HR to complain and Che-Boy's supervisor got himself/herself involved. I used to be a supervisor. I would never have involved myself in this crap."

Lol.. yup, some serious stupidity I'm afraid.  I guess the two of them were friends before the one got promoted to supervisor, so they've got a history of some sort.

Still not as funny as Jeckle though, leaving that nail gun behind with his address and phone number on it.  As for stupid, that's definitely the award winner thus far.

Appreciate the kind words.  Never really considered it to be honest, this all got started with a post that was just designed to vent a bit.  I do enjoy writing, but I'm still having to be very careful thanks to the non-disclosure agreements I signed so if I ever were to consider it I'd have to do it online and anonymously.   Otherwise my company could sue me back to the stone age.. lol..

Lol.. you know, I just slapped my forehead on that one.  I never looked.  I guess like most guys I just don't pay attention to that sort of thing.  I'll have to pay a bit closer attention next time I see her.

123 More curiosity:  Was IT able to remove the nail polish from the monitor with polish remover/acetone?

Posted by: Jimbo at March 10, 2012 09:49 AM (O3R/2)

124 The glass on an old CRT would be OK, but I don't know about the surface of an LCD monitor.

125 "More curiosity: Was IT able to remove the nail polish from the monitor with polish remover/acetone?"

I'm not 100% certain to be honest.  I would think that would probably screw up the screen.  Also they might be holding on to it for possible future litigation of their own, should they be able to prove who was responsible.  I'll see if I can find out on Monday.

127 Well, at the risk of live-blogging this thing, I guess Heckle & Jeckle have lawyer-ed up.  Not a public defender either, a genuine honest to goodness $500 an hour defense attorney.  Apparently Jeckle's dad at least is fairly well to do - so it looks like I might be here for a while longer.

Instead of Lunch and Lineup this might turn into Deposition and Dinner.

This of course prompted me to do a search for 'mayan porn.' Didn't find any but I'm a bit taken aback to learn that there is a free porn video site called XHamster.
