— Open Blogger The Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League's (PIHL) Open Cup state championship took place last Thursday. I know, I know. You don't care about highschool hockey in Pennsylvania. However, something awesome happened at the game.
First a little background information. It was held at the Robert Morris University Arena which is far smaller than the local NHL arena(Consol Energy Center). As such, the RMU arena doesn't have all the bells and whistles that a professional arena does. For example, it doesn't play the national anthem before non-collegiate games.
The PA announcer apologized for the lack of a national anthem and asked if anyone would like to volunteer. The entire crowd took him up on that offer.
Video below the fold.

Dude. A sporting event without the National Anthem being sung first isn't a sporting event.
Though now I'll have the fireworks scene from Christmas Vacation stuck in my head all day. Play ball!

>>sorta disappointed that they players didn't wait for the anthem?
They did. At the start of the video, you can see the players lined up on the blue line as is tradition in hockey. The PA announcer then said there would be no national anthem and then asked if anyone wanted to volunteer. I think he asked in jest assuming no one would take them up on it.
The players then skated to their benches for their pre-game talks. The singing didn't break out for another 20 seconds or so after they left the blue line.

Wonder why it wasn't at Console...the Pens hosted Florida Friday night, so it shouldn't have been an issue. But maybe the scheduling would interfer with practice. Otherwise, that would have been an awesome experience for those players.

What sort of "bells and whistles" are necessary to hand the microphone to a volunteer?
Even the smallest rural high schools in the middle of nowhere (the ones where the basketball court doubles as the auditorium doubles as the lunchroom, at least until the SCOAMF unfunded-mandated that every child spend 300 minutes a week on "anti-obesity" instead of math and/or language, requiring their communities to pass bond issues to build new gyms) have been managing this for decades.

Well here's the thing. Normally at highschool's home arena they have a student sing the anthem or they play a mp3 version.
This was a championship game at a college arena. So the planning wasn't in place for an anthem. There were other games that day too.

RMU is better suited for this kind of stuff. It's a smaller arena and is probably cheaper to rent out for the PIHL. I'm not 100% sure why they play it at the RMU arena, but I'm guessing money is a factor.

Slightly OT but slightly funny for a Monday am. The following is from Mish's blog today...........and with this blog broken don't ask for a link, I could barely get links to work when the blog was at full flux capacity. The story is from Washington state, where a Mr. Cloud (R) has finally forced a Mr. Dick (D) to step down from his US House seat because of corruption and vote buying.
"Mr. Dicks was no exception. Today, the type of blatant influence peddling practiced by Dicks, can no longer be tolerated. The economic injustice of bailing out failing businesses on the backs of productive citizens and businesses has nearly brought this country to its' knees"

Easily the best beer I ever drank was in Germany. Spent a couple years there and we made a career of visiting the small towns eating the food at the local gasthauses. Those people fed you properly.
The best part was the annual Oktoberfest, at the Hofbrau House, with throngs of drunks singing and swaying back and forth at those long benches.
Good times.

Heineken isn't my favorite, but it's better than any Canadian skunk beer.
Since I'm virtually broke I'm gonna splurge the last of my money on Leffe Belgian Ale, 6.6% alcohol content. After that it's time to dry out.

Always found the nicest people in the small towns, rather than major cities. Same thing in France, Parisians were/are major assholes, for the most part. The small village people were very friendly, especially the older ones, if they discovered you were a GI.

You too? My home stompin' grounds. Dad and Mom used to take us to the first facility, in the late 40s and fifties, which was a reworked boxcar with about 12 seats plus standing room. Always packed. Worked there part time for my first year in M'town Comm. College. Still love them. Sadly. they are now providing catsup for the heretics. Don Taylor is spinning in his grave. My dad and Don were high school classmates and good friends.

Because shut up! That's why!
The thing about the law is that it already allows for tax-payer subsidized IDs for people who can't afford them (really? A driver's license is $25 for 4 years or something like that- you can't come up with $6.25/yr?). So the only way this would discriminate against hispanics is if you take the premise that all hispanics are here illegally. In which case- why do you want them voting anyway?
Yeah. That last one what rhetorical- we all know the answer.
This isn't about discrimination against a minority group, it's about making it harder to prevent voter fraud.

I was walking through the city center park in Vancouver, WA one day last year. A group of 500ish Russian immigrants had gathered for some type of festival. The group included families with children, very old people, teenagers, young singles and everything in between. An MC was on stage speaking to the group in Russian. Then almost everyone stood up. A very old lady in a wheel chair made a big fuss and a couple of young men ran over to help her to her feet. They all sang the National Anthem (of the United States).
It brought a tear to my eye.

Complete nonsense. Milwaukee's Best is the worst beer, hands down. It was also unspeakably cheap and came in pony kegs.

You never had Meister Brau then. Back in my college days, my frat bought that shit by the keg and we would replace the plastic cap with a "Bud Light" one so that the young ladies would think they were getting a quality beer. They never knew better.
Weidemans, National Bohemian, and Geobels were all of our "can/bottle drinking" beers. My college checkbook ledger had nothing but entries from the convenience store down the street for $5.79. Which was the price for a 12 pack of Geobels, a can of Copenhagen, and two microwave burritos, the snack of champions.
