— Gang of Gaming Morons! Good afternoon my friends! I was told by Radish to not type so loud, so this will be a subdued thread. (No not really)
I made it back from Eve Vegas, wallet a little lighter, brain a little cloudier, and liver further on the brink. AKA the Moron Lifestyle. I also got to attend some fun lectures by Game Devs and Players alike. All in All I had an absolute blast, and helped fund the local economy. Time to eat mac and cheese to save back up.
Also, since the fucking hotel only had CNN, holy hell they are terrible. I'd rather watch the hacks on MSLSD any day of the week than the idiots on that channel. And my oh my the political adds.
More below the fold
Zakn here...So what have I been playing?
Well besides EVE, I've been playing Faster than Light. A Roguelike game, it's easy to pick up, put down, and still is highly engrossing. At times I swear the game is trolling me. I make it out of one encounter, to only have the game double down on making life miserable. I thought I had ship boarders figured out (I blow the hatches and kill them that way), and then I get boarded by space spiders or robots....
It's available on Steam or Thier Website if you don't want to give Gabe a cut. It's 10 bucks, and well worth it imho
One last mention about Eve: The Moron Channel. It's AoSHQ hang with your fellow morons in game. Been loving chilling with everyone.
Walking Dead Episode 4 is coming up soon. Really been loving it. If you haven't picked it up yet....well I just don't know
Thats all I have this week. If you are knowledgeable about re-hydrating via IV, lemme know.
Greetings fellow morons/ettes,
Java JoeX here, with computer games dominating the threads I thought an old fashioned board wargames thread was something that some of the grognards lurking out there might want to see. WW2 has been and always will be my passion. My heroes of youth wore olive green and fought Nazis in the greatest struggles of mankind. The history is written but the myriad of ‘what ifs’ have endless scenarios. How best to simulate any given ‘what if’ than a look into battle plans and the outcome?
These simulations put YOU into the chair of the commander and make the choices they made or didnÂ’t make. Normandy the best place to land on D-Day? Free the Panzer Divisions to counter attack Normandy? Fate plays a role in every military campaign, the dice choose your fate.
I want to introduce my absolute favorite, if I was stuck on a desert Island, must have game. The Gamers/MMPÂ’s SCS Afrika II Has been my absolute favorite. The Standard Combat Series of games published by MMP offers a simpler lever of play. With just four pages of rules it allows you to play any of the series scenarios with little time spent memorizing. The basics of maneuver, combat and supply are spelled out concisely with little need to know military jargon.

Afrika 2 covers the African campaign 1940- 1942 beginning with the Italian Invasion of Egypt to the Siege of Tobruk. Scenario specific rules further detail the different unitsÂ’ sizes, their supply considerations terrain bonuses and other interesting tidbits. Italian Divisions as an example require twice the supply other normal units would.
This scenario gives both sides the chance to be the fist and the face, early in the game the lumbering Italians run into Egypt but their supply is critically low. Forced to attack by Il Duce they are met by O'Conner's 7th Armored Div. Also making itÂ’s debut is the SAS a small special forces unit that wreaks havoc with Axis supply lines. The Italians will be surrendering en mass as the Allies roll unopposed.
Not to worry though the Desert FoxÂ’s arrival gives the Axis the chance to roll up all that was lost pushing the Brits to the brink of disaster. Will Rommel be able to break through to Alexander or Cairo?
Variable events regarding supply, reinforcements and air strength donÂ’t allow players to calculate the exact moment a unit arrives or is due to be sent to another theater.
Now I just hope I remember to seal this game in a waterproof container to survive the disaster.
Thank You for your attention, you can follow me on twitter @javajoex
Thats it for this week, If you have something you want to write about for the weekly gaming thread write it up and send it to aoshqgaming at gmail dot com

The best part of X-Com was the missile that you could set up stages in, so it would curve around and over things to blow them up. Game winning device, once you figured it out.

I had never come to cadet training school. To the south lay water –
there was no way we could cross that. To the east and west two armies
squeezed us in a pincer. The only way was north; I had to go for it
and pray the Gods were smiling on me. I picked up the dice and threw
two sixes. Caldecott couldnÂ’t believe it. My go again; another two
sixes!

beat his three and a two, another double six followed by a double four
and a double five. After heÂ’d thrown a three and a two I threw a six
and a three.

I am currently porting over a physics engine I'd coded / adapted back in 2007 (VS 2005/0
I have found some hideous legacy crap in here. .NET 1.1 was not a good platform for development, especially not UI development.
I am thinking of turning some of the front-end to XAML / WPF.
Anyway.
As to VS 2012. The IDE has SHOUTY CAPITAL LETTERS for FILE, EDIT, VIEW etc at the top. What year is this? 1981 with the all-uppercase Color Computer?
Other than that, it seems to be working as per usual, and the overall environment isn't that different.

And there standing before St. Peter is Arlen Specter and that poor cooked worker from Bumble Bee Tuna. St. Peter holds his nose and says "Pass."
Arlen starts to move towards the gates and St. Peter holds up a hand. "I meant the other guy."

I got the 2010 Windows Phone SDK. Its an impressive integrated set of tools...and you can work in C#, they don't force that Java abomination on you.
The Android SDK seems less impressive and chaotic.

Someone made a game about Democrat voters?
Yes, our local Democrat town council candidate was giving awat pizza and apple crisp out an orchard in town. Basically buying votes through food. They were also selling LED lights.

Hi Gaming Morons. I know nothing about gaming, but then again I know nothing about anything. Carry on.
62 That's good. Usually TCM just shows the same old films over and over again. I'm about tired of seeing how many different discussions one can have about Some Like it Hot and A Streetcar Named Desire.

Both Casino Royale and Quantum were Big Generic Action Thrillers. Either could have been a Statham movie or a Liam Neeson action thriller. Don't get me wrong, I love me some Statham and I'm very happy that there's now a subgenre of Liam Neeson action movies. But when I see a Bond movie, I want a Bond movie.
Now that I think about it, that may be why I liked MI4 so much. That felt and looked like a Bond movie. Huge scale, globe hopping, shot on location (it matters), attempts to do something different with the action scenes. That was more Bond than most recent Bond movies.

There was a really good movie made in the 90s called Peacemaker which was basically the American version of a James Bond, starring George Clooney. It was pretty great despite the leftist cast and attempts at portraying Clooney's character as a hamfisted American stooge and I thought that was the germ of a pretty cool franchise, but that's as far as it went.

From the Vanity Fair article in the sidebar:
"Obama said, “Here’s the deal. I want this hunt for Osama bin Laden and [Ayman] al-Zawahiri to come to the front of the line. I worry that the trail has gone cold. This has to be our top priority and it needs leadership in the tops of your organizations.” He added, “I want regular reports on this to me, and I want them starting in 30 days.”"
The chance of this having occurred even remotely as described here are zero. This is utter horseshit propaganda, and the person who wrote it is a journalistic whore.
