Next Phase Of The Gun Control Fight....Gun Shows

In an open letter sent to the Times Union on Thursday, Petronis, president of New Eastcoast Arms Collectors Associates (NEACA), said those working to stop the show were "trying again to steal a little piece of freedom from our grasp."
It was followed Friday by an online petition created by Robert LeClair, a Hudson Falls gun owner. His effort at change.org asks City Center officials to keep the gun show. It states: "The sudden knee-jerk need to ban a perceived threat by the uninformed, ignorant few who have no understanding of what they want banned will have widespread repercussions against the constitutional rights of our children and their children."
Their efforts came five days after Susan Steer started a petition asking the City Center to cancel the gun show out of respect for the victims and families of Newtown, Conn. Her petition says community members were horrified over the massacre at the elementary school and shocked at the thought of someone being able to purchase a semiautomatic weapon along Broadway at the City Center. The center is operated by an authority whose members are nominated by the mayor and confirmed by the City Council.

Organizers are caving a bit by "asking" vendors not to bring AR-15s with them or display them discretely.

Of course the lunacy of all of this as the show's promoters points out is there are 15 gun stores within a a half hour of the convention center. Like the newspaper that published the list of permit holders, this is nothing more than rank harassment and an effort to marginalize people for daring to exercise their rights.

At the moment, the anti-gun show online petition is over a thousand "signatures" while the pro-show petition is only at about 400 or so. So, if you're so inclined....

I posted this on the open thread but this is a better place for it. I absolutely do not subscribe to any of the MSM newspapers. Having said that I noticed the font page article on a local paper (Macatchy group or Gannett) by a ap reporter that mentioned the school children murders and then told abut how gun and ammunition sales are unprecedented. I guess this prog/liberal nitwit would have us to believe that the prog politicians and the rest of the left screaming for gun control had nothing to do with the surge in sales. Prog stupidity is a mystery to behold. Did these politicians not think that if you tell the public they can't have something the pubic will just say ok whatever you think is best for me and my family. The good news is that many ammunition and gun manufacturers will increase production, add hours and hire employees. So maybe we should follow the money and see if the progs have interests in these companies?

28 It's counter-productive, anyway. When you shut down gun shows you take a whole bunch of gun sales that take place under one roof and in public where they're easily overseen by just a handful of law enforcement, and scatter them all over the country side where they take place behind closed doors on private party with nobody looking. Of course, they don't care that they're actually making things worse because reducing the crime isn't their object. Making social pariahs out of gun owners and stamping out conservative culture is the real goal.

What gun shows do have is private parties who buy, sell, and trade wit other private parties. The gun laws were never intended to force Joe Smith to complete a shitwad of paperwork when buying a gun from Sam Smith.

It is no loophole. Of course, anything liberals do not like is always a "loophole". They are now calling the home mortgage interest deduction a "loophole" to be closed.

Hey, I get your point, and it pisses me off that I really believe that it's time to "go silent" in some cases. The bad guys are in charge now, and it's been a long time since government was my friend. Hell, what I just wrote is likely highly suspect to certain elements of our "friends" in government. People will say "well they can take my guns from my cold dead hands" and will also hang on to their lead ammo so that "I can fight back if the time comes" but will otherwise go along. A tiny percent might go Galt to the extant of cash and barter for most of their economic activity and perhaps up to half will go grey market for a small fraction of their economic activity but most will not stray far from the line and risk the IRS wrath with their serious enforcement options or risk publicity and court action for infringing civil rights by asking the FSA to pay in cash rather than with an EBT card. Maybe I'm wrong, I would prefer that I was but it doesn't look that hopeful to me.

42 Our fine city decided to start a gun turn-in program. Saturdays in January, then the second Saturday of each month. At the crime lab, but (based on the press release) no criminal follow-up. Only a check to see if the gun was reported stolen, or if it is a "historically valuable" weapon. Of course, some tool didn't get the message and dropped off both a .38 and ammunition. Today. In December. Frankly, if this person couldn't get the "in January" portion of the message, I'd assume they'd have a problem with something as complex as "ready, aim, fire".

On one hand, there are restrictions ... but unloaded firearms are expected, at all times, by everyone at gun shows, and if I were a dealer, I'd likely use cables to display my merchandise, as some have done for many years. On the other hand, "gun shows were not banned ... neither by Alameda County, nor by the 9th Circus (The Least Competent Circuit in America Â© Â® Â™") ... and, regrettably (well, maybe not in this case), the decision by the 9th Circuit reaches even to the Liberals in New York ... ... and the Saratoga Springs city government, and Susan Steer, need to be publicly reminded of this.

76 Well Dave, I hope that putting into words a likely path where freedom erodes but folks go "well as long as King Baraka is not trying to seize my guns its not worth resisting" that those folks will be more resistant to the idea. I'm not ever going to be gunner, even if we end up in a hot civil war. Disrupting supply lines to the enemy would be as far as I would go. Now I have thought that I could take a stand for principle, get myself trained and get a CCW permit and file suit against my workplace's no guns signs, problem is I don't actually personally have a desire to carry a weapon at all times, I don't feel at risk and would consider it a huge responsibility.

There's some creepy "documentary" on Showtime that is suddenly on ALL THE TIME (it seems) about how "easy" it is to buy a gun at a gun show, "Living for 32." I understand how Brady, this filmmaker, and others who've survived shootings are against "guns," but they've not thought it through: there was a mentally-ill person behind each of the attacks. It's as though rape victims protested the availability of bad circumstances rather than rapists (also, I would argue, mentally deranged). Or victims of spousal abuse protested the objects they were hit with, rather than their abusers. I am not sure why so many refuse to indict the evil/mentally ill human beings who have hurt them, rather than the objects used.

It would be as though the bus were accused of gang-raping the young Indian woman who died of her injuries, rather than the malefactors who committed the crime upon her.

141 I'm not much of a gun guy( I do have my dads 1953 Belgian Browning over/under 12 gauge) and my old single shot 20 gauge is long gone. I haven't fired anything since I was 15 and I'm now 61.I was also a very lousy pheasant hunter. BUT- I am going to get a hangun. I need lots of help/advice as to what should be the useful parameters. A retired cop buddy says Glock, another Beretta, etc. What caliber? .40 .44 .45 9mm? I have cruised by the normal sellers (Cabela's and such but the counters are mobbed! I'm already scheduled for a two day instruction/CCP class but that isn't until March and I'm supposed to "bring my gun".(And 500 rounds/day, I think).
Any advice?

144 Jake's advice is sound. I have a 9mm and a .40 Glock. I prefer the Glock, but the ammo is more expensive. I'd like to have a .45, but I'm happy with what I've got. I carried a 9mm Sig when I deployed, and that was a really nice gun, but a little more expensive than I'd want to pay. You can find bulletin boards dedicated to pro/anti Glock rants, but I find it's a pretty steady, reliable, reasonably priced handgun. If you want to conceal carry, consider the Glock 23.

They won't just ban "shows". They'll criminalize one citizen selling his or her firearm to another citizen. You will have to buy your gun from, or sell your gun to, a licensed dealer.
After that it will be easy to increasingly impose costs on dealers until no sporting goods stores or small gun stores will be able to afford to deal in firearms.

146 My state blows in a big way. I can buy a pistol but you can't really transport it without subjecting yourself to a felony conviction for carrying a concealed weapon. Even if the pistol is disassembled and locked in the trunk and you have no ammo in the car. The law says you can transport it to and from a certified gun range. If your stopped by and LEO, they get to decide if you should be arrested. Maybe they think your route home is suspicious or they just feel like arresting you. You can probably beat it in court but you will have a felony arrest and some time in custody before arraignment. You get to pay a lawyer. Can you prove that you really were on the way home? If you have a concealed carry permit, this isn't a problem. Except you probably cannot get one. You have to convince the chief of police in your town that you need one (yes, need). And even if they say yes, the state attorney general can say no because, because fuck you, that's why. Technically, the law doesn't even say you can even transport the pistol home from the gun shop where you bought it. It's a problem because the LEOs here would prefer no law abiding citizen carry a concealed weapon and the laws are ambiguous enough to make it an issue of legal risk. I just wanted two target pistols and a lever action rifle for fun. I can have and transport as many long guns and shotguns as I want. There's a mini 14 locally that has my name on it. I'd prefer to have my target pistols but fuck 'em. I can't leave here. Just not possible. Anybody have any opinions on the Hornady reloading equipment? Or the RCBS gear?
