— DrewM Via Byron York, they weren't even close to being the decisive factor.
For example, in Wisconsin, 3,056,613 votes were cast, of which 4 percent, or 122,264 votes, were cast by Hispanics according to exit polls. Mr. Obama’s margin of victory in Wisconsin was over 200,000 votes — even if all Hispanics had voted for Mr. Romney instead of voting for Mr. Obama by more than two to one, he would have won the state. Not unexpectedly, the Hispanic vote was also not decisive in Iowa or New Hampshire where Mr. Obama could have carried the states even if he had won none of the Hispanic vote whatsoever.
In Ohio, where the president received an estimated 54 percent of the Hispanic vote, according to exit poll data, we find he could have won the state with as little as 22 percent of the Hispanic vote, and in Virginia, where he received 64 percent of the Hispanic vote, we find that he could have carried the state with just over 33 percent.
...
With these five swing states, along with the safe Democratic states that Mr. Obama should have carried regardless of the Hispanic vote, the president would have reached 283 electoral votes, winning the Electoral College without needing to win a majority of the Hispanic vote in each state.
So even if Romney equaled W's Holy Grail number from 2004, he still wouldn't have won.
Oh and that 2004 number? Yeah, it was an outlier for the GOP with Hispanics.
1984 66/34 Democrats
1988 70/30 Democrats (this was the first election after the last amnesty when
it should have paid off most for Republicans)
1992 61/25 Democrats (Perot was 16)
1996 72/21 Democrats (Perot was 6)
2000 62/35 Democrats (Buchanan 1, Nader 2)
2004 53/44 Democrats (Nader 2). Bush's support may have been as low as 40%.
2008 67/31 Democrats
2012 71/27 Democrats
If you average those numbers you'll see that the GOP traditionally gets about...31%. So Romney wasn't exactly that far off. Granted, this is a crude way of looking at it given the increase in the percentage of Hispanics, about 2% in 1988 up to 9% this year and lots of other factors, but it gives you a ballpark.
We seem to have this "Help us amnesty, you're our only hope!" conversation every two years and it's always wrong.
Long term the GOP needs to figure out a way to broaden its coalition but making more likely Democratic voters isn't going to do it. Personally, I'd start with toning down the rhetoric. Not making every illegal alien caught doing something terrible the poster child for all illegals seems like a reasonable start. If the price of reaching the "Hispanic" community is amnesty, we've got an unsquarable circle.
More immediately, the pro-amnesty forces are going to keep pushing out crap about how amnesty is the key to the GOP's future. Don't buy it.
There may well be a humanitarian case for regularizing their status but amnesty supporters need to make it and stop making up BS reasons that are easily disprovable.

We need a Spanish language Fox News type network and/or conservative talk show hosts. Maybe some of those hosts already exist in the border states, I don't know. But it would help to get the message to that population.

The GOP should get busy with the various hispanic chambers of commerce and whatnot. There seem to be many hispanic small businesses, immigrants are famous for starting their own small businesses and that is certainly true of urban hispanic neighborhoods.
And get with the spanish-speaking media fer cryan out loud. Spanish TV went after Barky good and hard on Fast and Furious. Why didn't the GOP latch onto that and make it a national story, led by Spanish TV?
Huge opportunity squandered.

For whatever reason, Bush got millions more votes in 2004. Those are the voters that stayed home.
I suspect that it was blue collar Republicans who just weren't into Romney's gun, Romneycare history, and tax cuts for the higher earners. At least that's what I see around me with friends and family.

I don't care that in the swing states Hispanic voters wouldn't have carried the day. It still was 70-30 nationally. That said, the GOP shouldn't use that as an excuse for an amnesty plan.
The plan should be as with other low information voters and culturally conservative Democrats, is to educate them why they should be conservative or let the fire teach them. Unfortunately they will never learn as long as Santa Claus is still handing out presents. Burn the sled!

Stop making this about who's going to take care of all the illegal immigrants. I'm sick of making the story about them, because it gives them legitimacy. Start making this about how immigrants have come here and learned to thrive, LEGALLY.

Mitt Romney lost because he would not define himself. Not in the "so he allowed his opponent to do it" sense (though, that too), but it meant that people were unsure.
As ace points out from time to time, we're in the top 1% of informed voters. We knew where he stood on all kinds of things that people in (say) the bottom 50% didn't. Note that this isn't just "LIVs," it's also people who pay attention to the news (even if they get most of their news from the MFM), but don't go to political blogs, or follow politicians on twitter.
So when they looked at Mitt Romney, they were unsure of what he stood for. Now, some of those people were Obama Voters who'd been burned once by a "blank slate" and weren't going to take the chance again. Others were generally conservative voters who saw a rich, Northeastern Republican and automatically felt a little wary.
And then you get to the actual LIVs, whose view of Romney really was created solely by the MFM.
I think those are the "missing" votes. I think those people, unsure of what Romney would do, would never vote for Barack Obama (or never vote for him again), but couldn't quite bring themselves to vote for Mitt Romney, either.

They come over the border to make money.
They will do all kinds of things to make money. There are people who are American citizens who aid and abet this.
There is an incredibly lucrative and violent and dangerous drug trade going on at the border. People are dying by the score weekly. People (our fellow citizens) are being terrorized, threatened and killed and our government doesn't seem to care.
Given the statements by my Jacksonian Democrat brother in -law (who hates all Republicans), there is a fair chance he would vote for a party that actually planned to control the border. Because I think he hates Mexicans more than Republicans (but that could be a toss-up question).
California will never go Republican again in my lifetime, and the Mexican invasion is the main reason why. Nevada is next, followed by New Mexico, Colorado and Arizona. Texas will follow and be the next dominoe to fall (in a generation). Rahm Emmanuel wants them voting now, because he is probably getting paid of by the Latin Kings drug gang.
This is the Reconquista, and it is real. Yet, many "thoughtful" Republicans are yet enamored of more amnesty. Let's kill this thing quicker and get to the next chapter of "Whatever Happened to the American Republic?"

You think having large families is a recent event to for Latinos since discovering an open border to the north? Many IF NOT ALL of the illegals send fucking Billions of dollars back home. They are buying land. They are building new homes. They are funding businesses for thier extended families. Send the illegal moms and dads back along with the anchor babies. They will be quite comfy in the new lifestyle they built for themselves back home.
This is not a bigoted-talking-out-my-ass rant. I married a Pinoy that came here legally. Every Filipino we know, EVERY ONE, sends money back home. Latinos are no different.

Regarding Iowa, or any other rural part of the USA, those areas are being bled of people and capital. Drive thru America's midsection sometime, it's not prosperous.
Farm subsidies are a lifeline. Growing corn for ethanol allows farmers to stay on their land and keep it, rather than sell the land at auction to Warren Buffet or Bill Gates, who are both buying thousands of acres of farmland right now.
Farmers are rugged individualists, yes, but reality confronts them every single morning at 4am.

After a few weeks reflection, I see how Romney handled his campaign wrong after the first debates.
He got a big bounce because he was finally getting a bit more specific. He then turned around and made his campaign about short, meaningless (to some voters) campaign slogans. Obama destroyed him on the "no details" line as well - all while providing no details on his stupid "plans" for the future.
Romney should have had informational ads, explaining how more jobs would grow the economy and thus revenues without needing tax hikes.
He should have explicitly said every campaign stop that Obama was lying and the GOP did not want to take any rights or privileges away from women.
People, and especially women, just did not believe him. And idiots like Akin and Mourdock sealed the deal for Obama.

Yes it is the media that cultivated this. They rarely do so explicitly, because the underhanded approach is so much more effective. If you can SUGGEST that America and Israel are evil, without actually saying so, the listener thinks they actually had a thought of their own and it sticks, its very powerful. Its what they've decided and no evidence can prove otherwise. Strange that insinuation can be so much more powerful than truth, but it is what it is.

97 - many farmers have indeed moved to the city. Their children certainly have.
Rural areas are populated by old people. Schools all over rural America have shuttered/consolidated.
Farm policies for a long time now have been shaped by agribusiness. Most secretaries of agriculture are drawn from agribusiness. Agribusiness is a rent-seeker, just like all the other rent-seekers.
The actual family farmers are a smaller piece of the pie all the time, and when Obama gets his dream and the death tax goes back up, there will be even fewer of them. Warren Buffet and Bill Gates are ready to swoop in and buy the family farms, because the family can't keep the farm AND pay the death tax.
That has been Buffet's MO for years now, with all small family businesses. He advocates for a high death tax and higher taxes in general because he profits from them.

A proper and concise ruling, using the definition of the 14th Amendment as written would have stopped all this a long time ago.
Whichever Just-Ass read the "anchor babies" into that plainly worded prohibition of them is the reason for our troubles. The "...and subject to the jurisdiction thereof" part was totally ignored. If you're present in our country as a guest, you're still under your native country's jurisdiction if you're not a naturalized American Citizen. It's just that simple.
However, that's deemed "RAYCISS!!!11!" in our feminized society these days. And I denounce myself.

Rural areas are populated by old people. Schools all over rural America have shuttered/consolidated.
Yeah. Around 2 million family farms - the number in decline. They take the government subsidies to survive - but they "do" take them. From the government. In a sense they are government workers. They are dictated to - as to what they can and cannot grow, plant, set aside.
Sad case, really. And a minute political demographic on the national scale.

Remove spaces before "opinion" and after "#".
SE Cupp argues that we need to talk about abortion more, not less. I actually have to agree with her; if we refuse to talk about abortion then we concede the ground to the left, and we'll still be condemned for it. We need to openly discuss the issue, if for no other reason than to develop sound arguments that our politicians can use so they don't get into an Akin-type of situation.

It's about blocs
Democrats will get 90% of the black vote
Democrats will get 70% of the hispanic vote
Democrats will get 60+% of the non-white rest.
A GOP candidate will need up wards of 70+% of the white vote to win.
Tell me what happens if the GOP starts to make explicit appeals to the white voting bloc bozos?

I have a cousin who was living with our grandparents when he was caught breaking into houses around town. He went to jail for three years, and was finally released last year. He lasted two weeks before he violated parole and was sent back to jail.
My father didn't even find out until a month and a half later at Christmas, when Mark wasn't there and they told my dad, "Oh yeah, he's back in jail."
The best part is Mark has a child with a drug addled idiot. Poor kid has no chance.

The media pushes this every election cycle because they know another amnesty will be the death of the GOP. And this isn't something you can "tweak" later, once you open that door, there's no going back.
If Romney had run on a Bush/McCain amnesty he would have likely lost the race by an even larger margin as disaffected, working class whites would probably have sat it out.
I still contend that what costs the GOP elections is the gender gap, you close that and it's game over for Democrats.

Mr Pink @ 57, important point. Lawlessness is the point. There's kind of a reason that rule of law is, you know, important. Well, actually, central, and the starting point for any discussion of any topic. Otherwise, you instantly descend into (sorry) an idiotic idea that there may be a "humanitarian" reason to, you know, endorse and reward a massive violation of basic laws. ("Humanitarian" exceptions are only a sane concept when applied to individuals or very small groups in truly extreme circumstances - e.g. Ethiopian or Iranian student visa-holders state-side when Selassie and the Shah, respsectively, lost out to new management back home).
Rule of law. One of the true bases for our civilization, our prosperity. Something Americans have suffered and died for to introduce into regions where its lack was not just a crippling burden to the locals, but part of the threat to our interests. And a thing not seriously understood by 1% of the country, or .05% of the "elites".

Drug addict who's prohibited from living with her young daughter, who spent most of last year squatting in an abandoned home in Miami with her meth head boyfriend. She got pregnant again last year and my half-sister let her move in with them, even though this was in direct violation of the court order to keep her away from my great-niece. Had the baby -- a boy -- and after that I have no idea. I know at one point she was going to jail for either selling or stealing oxycontin, and for crossing state lines when she was on parole.

Back to defending family farmers, another thing that absolutely devastates them is the regulation by their county land commissioners. Regarding where they can plant, and their water use (or non-use as in California) and the drainage of their land.
Agribusiness can absorb those costs, and have the lawyers on hand to write the regs and push them through.
Now we can start talking about how Americans don't want to pick the harvest and that's why we need illegals. (*ducks*)

Random thoughts/hunches/questions:
(A) Isn't this possibly more of a class issue than a race issue -- that is as Hispanics are more likely to be lower income, they are more likely to be Democratic voters; as Hispanics become wealther and more integrated into US society, they will likely be more Republican. The effect (and probably the design) of Democratic policies is create more voters dependent on government, and therefore the party of government. Everywhere we can (when we can) we have to push policies that create less reliance on the governmental leviathan.
(B) Between African Americans and Hispanics, there is a sizable block of the U.S. voting population that is overwhelmingly voting Democractic. We can't just keep writing off various voting groups as unreachable. Given current income disparity levels between Hispanic/Blacks vs. Whites, I think it unlikely that Republicans will capture a majority of those ethnic groups. But if we captured 25% of the AfAm vote, and 35% to 40% of the Hispanic vote (while retaining a majority of White voters and a large number of Asian voters), we would be pretty tough to beat. I know citing numbers does not make it happen, but we need to figure out how to market ourselves (without compromising substance) to capture a larger percentage of those voters.
(C) "Hispanic" is a misleading label. Cuban voters in Florida and Mexican voters in the Southwest don't have a lot in common (other than Spanish and even their respective ways of speaking Spanish is different). I don't know enough about some of the other growing ethnic groups from Central American to know where they fall, but I wonder sometimes if "Hispanic" is a made up lazy category.
(D) Josh Trevino seems to come out different on this issue than Drew. I think Trevino is pretty thoughtful, though I am not quite persuaded by some of his arguments about how the party should address hispanic reach out.

This is remarkably simplistic and much of the demographic representation in the thread is inaccurate. As a resident of one of Iowa's most rural counties (who works in a nearby city as a finance professional), rural populations had waned since the turn of the prior century. Our county is less than a third of the population in 1900. It declined profoundly through the 1980s, but is actually slowly growing again. Politically, we don't vote with the fundamentalist bible thumpers but more along a libertarian streak. In 2000, Bush won 92% the vote, and the registration skews heavily Republican.
Romney did very poorly here. He got so few votes at the primary Caucus and in fact, nobody even stood up to speak on his behalf. We had people supporting Bachmann, Perry, Cain (which I spoke on behalf of), Ron Paul and others. Most of us were shocked when Romney became the candidate due to the assassination of everyone else by both Romney's people and the media.
That turned off about half of the base and they never came back. Most of our moderates I've spoken to since the Nov election said they couldn't vote for Romney because he comes across as an out-of-touch rich man who cannot connect with regular people's difficulties. As maddening as this is when there's no context applied to Obama, they just wouldn't vote for the "daddy's boy" or "slick used car salesman" or "privileged frat boy." And this wasn't Obama's media campaign that accomplished the damage: most of it was self-inflicted by the utterly pathetic campaign strategy Romney's hacks ran. They were all about winning the primary at all costs, trashing anyone on the right and throwing their candidate's likeability into the dumpster in doing so. One after another, when the Bachmann people saw her get destroyed by Romney's thugs, they shut down but decided they would never vote for him. Perry, Cain and others reached the same conclusion.
The last straw was the Republican convention. I spoke with the Iowa delegates and they were exasperated at the fascist actions by the RNC elites, silencing our voices in the rigged votes. People checked out at that time and never came back. One after another Republican I have spoken to said they now believe the party has to die and every corrupt insider has to be thrown out before they can ever support it again. A new party is required if there is to be opposition to the Democrats in 2016. It doesn't matter to them that RNC elites scream that they'll be marginalized as a third party (actually, they don't see the Republican party lasting any longer. It is dead to them). If anything, if anybody wants to challenge the Democrats, they'd better get moving because as long as the corrupt and incompetent Republican party is the only alternative, you'll keep electing Democrats.

I got one. My mom has a half brother who has 3 kids. The middle one, son, is the ultimate piece of shit. Dropped out of high school at 16. Had two little girls out of wedlock (up to 6 kids now). Prettiest, cutest kids you've ever seen. The older daughter gets diagnosed with a seriously nasty form of cancer right as she turns 3. Spends time in and out of hospitals, multiple remissions and recurrences. Fortunately, she was full healthy and was able to be the flower girl when my wife and I got married. The dad, my cousin, got into drugs. Taking and dealing. Got so bad that the DEA set up a sting targetting him. Busted him for dealing crack. Off to jail he goes. Daughter gets very sick, end is near. He's about 6 months from being released but it's obvious the daughter isn't going to make it that long. He petitions the court to be released early. Court grants it. He never went to see her before she passed away.

i read an article not too long ago from norway or sweden about how the immigrants are coming in and taking advantage of all of the social programs in ways that the scandinavians never did, overloading the system and stressing the national budgets.
Hence the problem of allowing an influx of immigrants into your country without requiring them to normalize to YOUR cultural and societal expectations, and when you're scared to death of being arrested for even mentioning it. The model doesn't work for the Scandis anymore than it does for us or anyone else.

I have a feeling it's going to be more of an Open Thread with a gun theme.

I have a cousin like that. He's a sociopath, relentlessly stupid and beyond help, always in trouble with the law. You can't try and help people like that because they fuck you over every single time. No good deed will go unpunished with them.
When he was arrested the news media was there, so you got to see my grandmother in her bathrobe and my grandfather in his sweats, half blind and deaf, on the evening news telling the police, "You've got the wrong guy. He's a good kid." While the cops are pulling out stereos and jewelry and drugs from his room.
To say my dad was furious is an understatement.

Early this year I was struck by the strong support for Ron Paul. Signs, etc.
Yeah, make fun of Luap Nor, but his independence struck a chord with people in rural america.
Taking over the republican party and forcing it to become the party of libertarians, and tea party fiscal responsibility, and putting a face on it that isn't NE liberals/progressives, would help attract the voters who stayed home.
Starting a new party from scratch is a death wish. Send the rinos to the whig table.

Silly troll. My point was about cultural expectations. Immigrants came to the United States for many years because they wanted to become AMERICANS. A lot of them still do. But these days we aren't allowed to expect that from immigrants who choose to come here, especially not illegals. It's RACIST and BIGOTED. We're supposed to be a big "salad" of cultures mixing together without blending together, instead of that horrible, spiteful "melting pot" metaphor that was in use for decades. So what do we get? Cultural silos that are considered inviolate. It's ridiculous.
The same goes for Europe -- all of Europe, not just Scandinavia -- and they know it. They just refuse to do anything about it. When you can't eat sausage and wine in France because you'll offend a Muslim, you know something went wrong with your immigration policy.

My wife and I were talking about her the other day. We've got pics of her up in our house. My 5 yr old, who got her middle name from her, has a painting she did while in the hospital hanging in her room.
She would've been 16 last month. My fav story. She was very ill, but parents made the decision that on days she was well enough, she should go to school. That she should get to experience that. School was very understanding. The principal took her to each 1st grade room and introduced her to the class. Afterwards the principal tells her "Ok, lets go back to your class." "Wait, aren't there more classes?" "No sweetie, that's all the first grade classes." "No, I mean other classes. Aren't there more classes with more kids?" "Well, yes." "I want to meet them. I want to meet all the kids." So the principal spent the day taking her to every single classroom and introducing her.

Many folks here have made sound arguments for trying to patiently explain why conservatives are not racist, why they regard everyone equally, and why, when speaking amongst ourselves, we must not be as the Left is, targeting specific groups, but always speaking to all people.
I think the time for that is over. I think this is the time for anger.
"You, and all those like you, Matthews, are a pox on humanity itself, dividing our citizens against one another and fostering the very hatred you claim to be guarding against. I love all people - you see people only as tools to be used, weapons to be wielded against others, you are the problem, you, and Sharpton, and Jackson Jr., and indeed Barack Obama. You are a reprobate, a racist, a divisive, evil-hearted son of a bitch, and you are a plague upon this nation and its people, whom you keep at each others throats to further your own ends."
Off the cuff thing there. A career politician might do it better, but the point is that it is time to get serious, to be passionate, there can be no half measures. All in, with fury and passion, or don't even bother.
That is my opinion.

Whistling past the graveyard...
Ignoring the Hispanic vote is foolish, and is another step towards irrelevency for the GOP.
Like it or not, the legal Hispanic vote is growing. And it is logistically impossible to deport the millions of illegals here.
Also, how can you look at 31% (or 27%) and say that we're doing OK. That's 69% of the Hispanic vote on the table. Do you not care about the potential?
I'm sick and tired of this short-term game of trying to win by the thinnest of margins. I've never been in favor of amnesty, but if we are going to actually deal with the immigration problem, then what is the point of pissing off so many potential future GOP voter?
There are MANY bigger problems out there that are more worthy of climbing upon a cross over.

Most Americans do not grasp that in Israel one death affects not just families, but a whole town. It's small nation and they are not rich. They are a modern day Sparta, but that does not make them a superpower. Israelis by nature are not warlike and are like reluctant warriors. And legal Hispanics are no problem. You don't seem to grasp that we're talking about ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS here. Get it through your thick skull.
And yes, that means immigrants from anywhere, not just South and Central America. But it's just so gosh darn EASY for latinos to get here because we're physically attached to them, and because our government has no interest in enforcing it's own immigration laws. Chinese or Russian or African illegals, etc, have to get here by boat or plane. They have to stow away, or somehow get a visa, or pay a crapload of money to be smuggled into the country.
Or they can do the smart thing, go to mexico, and just walk across the g-ddamn border.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for this post. Yes, stop these suicidal fucks who just want to add a shit ton more demorats.
There is a simple way to answer this re immigration:
1) People want to come to America to make a better life for themselves. That is a compliment to our great country and we understand those who want to work to better their lives and families;
2) But when we can't put our own people to work, it does not make sense to have massive immigration. We just don't have the jobs.
3) As far as some sort of status for people who are here, that can be debated and discussed under two conditions:
a) first we must have significant significant permanent border enforcement, walls, whatever, ramp up criminal deportations, etc., etc.
b) no citizenship. individuals must go back to their home country and apply for citizenship and get the fuck in line. we do not reward lawbreakers with automatic citizenship.

Buzzzz. Thanks for playing. California is a Democrat state because we've imported Democrats (Both from within and outside of the US) for decades. Latin populations are by and large culturally Democrat; (There are exceptions, Chile, Honduras to name a couple) and therefore vote Democrat when they immigrate. Plain and simple. No big thoughts needed. If Mexico, for instance, was by and large a true Conservative culture, as Americans understand it, they would be a country to immigrate to, not from.

Connertown:
I agree wholeheartedly. We must do better outreach, big time!!!
Another thing re demographics. Mexican women are having children today at a rate under the replacement rate. In 1970, they were averaging 7 babies per woman.
In other words, the continuing flood of hispanics that many have wrung their hands about is not going to continue since there aren't really that many more mexicans being born.
The only bonus with zero is that he has made the US such a shitty place to leave that the flow of immigrants was actually NEGATIVE last year.
We need outreach to hispanic communities, common sense "status" reform, very strong border control, and to support Mexico's strong defense of its southern border.
The rest shall take care of itself.

The only way to prevent that would be to immediately end immigration from 3rd world nations, eliminate federal aid for jurisdictions that protect and subsidize illegals, imprison employers of illegals, and deport captured illegals.
Since none of that will happen, I have only one question. Did you enjoy your country while it lasted?

@261 - "By demonizing Hispanics as all being illegal, that is why California is a Democratic state. "
Well, no. California is a Democrat state, in part, because we let in so many illegal Hispanics to begin with.
I have family out in Arizona, so I know better than to believe the "legal Hispanics sympathise with illegals" nonsense. The legal Hispanics out there - including some whose families have been there longer than the gringos - suffer the loss of jobs, lower wages, etc. just like whites do, and tend to dislike the illegals tremendously.
This fluff and nonsense about "all Hispanics being alike" tends to be a fantasy concocted by you La Raza types, not by people who are concerned about illegal aliens. We know that not all Hispanics are illegals or are alike. YOU all, on the other hand, try to act like they are.

We don't need ObamaPhones, government provided condoms for Sandra Fluke's $14,000-a-year sex binges, subsidized broadband Internet for those who stay at home playing Warcraft, more than 75% of the food stamp racket, and we certainly don't need to give corn welfare either.
Speaking of food stamps, go shopping in a rural county or inner city and you'll see people grouping their groceries into two: a bunch of already made, expensive meals, soda, cookies, etc. (instead of stuff to cook from scratch and save a ton), and a pile of goodies like lotto tickets, beer, movie rentals, and smokes. Notice how they buy the first batch with our money using a food stamp card. Then they fork out cash to buy the fun stuff.
Oh and in Iowa, we have a bunch of people buying grocery carts full of 5 gallon bottled water using food stamps, taking it out to the parking lot to dump it, then returning it for a $7 deposit refund paid in cash. I'd be shocked if even 10% of those receiving some sort of welfare actually need it to survive.

"I know all about that. In the late Twenties, when I was a sophomore at USC, I was a socialist myself — but not when I left. The average college kid idealistically wishes everybody could have ice cream and cake for every meal. But as he gets older and gives more thought to his and his fellow man's responsibilities, he finds that it can't work out that way — that some people just won't carry their load ... I believe in welfare — a welfare work program. I don't think a fella should be able to sit on his backside and receive welfare. I'd like to know why well-educated idiots keep apologizing for lazy and complaining people who think the world owes them a living. I'd like to know why they make excuses for cowards who spit in the faces of the police and then run behind the judicial sob sisters. I can't understand these people who carry placards to save the life of some criminal, yet have no thought for the innocent victim."

2. I know, being bigoted toward white rural folks is the last publicly acceptable form of bigotry and racism. It shows how you really feel about race, that you are still drawing lines of color and so are still deep down a racist.
3. I've got no problem with people of Latin heritage. I've got problems with people of liberal values. It seems that Latin populations by and large are loaded with folks of liberal values.

Nehring's point was that the Hispanic immigrant is escaping communism/socialism in their old country to get to ours. Hence, they are conservative. The GOP problem is that we do not reach out to those legal immigrants when they arrive and that the Democrats co-opt them. The same, he said, was true on Asians.
His solution is to have our candidates go to those minorities, at their meetings, and speak to them. His example: the Voting Rights Act created minority-majority districts, that were surrounded by majority-majority districts. These majority-majority districts still have minorities in them and those are the people you start with.
The big thing I thought Nehring pushed was that Romney was +8 with men but -12 with women. This ties in with this morning's news dump on the GOP ignoring low information voters at their peril.

The only reason people of Latin heritage appear to be Liberal is because Republicans attack them and the Democrats are the only ones who try to win their votes. Bush got 44% of them and that's proves your bigoted view is wrong.
1. Concentrate less on Spanish and more on English.
A person is a Spaniard a person is Spanish. Spanish in that usage is an ADJECTIVE meaning from Spain and can be used to describe anything including people, Spaniard is a NOUN which is specific as to a person from Spain.
Compare English (adj) (He is English) and Englishman (n) (He is an Englishman)
2. Bush was a big government liberal. Did you just forget about NCLB, and Medicare part D? And he provided a foil for the Democrats that has lasted a decade, and has done more damage to the Republican party than any other Republican, and arguably any person living or dead. If we have to run a Bush clone to just lose a voting block by less, IT ISN'T WORTH IT!
Latin people (Which is a horrible horrible way to amalgamate numerous cultures) vote liberal because they are liberal, just like everybody else who votes liberal. Bush was liberal, and they voted for him. So what? He's not worth repeating.

Thanks for buttressing your dipshittery. I grew up around farmers, with many in the family. My best friend is a farmer. I am not talking about Ag Businesses, I am talking about those actual farmers who own and run a family farm. In my best friends case, 480 acres of wheat and corn this year. It's himself and 5 employees. He has a Master's degree and would have a PhD except that his father's health declined to the point that he couldn't take the time off to pursue it. Your cherry-picked (SWIDT?) statistics mean something to your own hipsterism-induced urban dementia, but not to folks in the real world.

Its easy for someone with urban bias who's never lived in a rural farming area to make this mistake. The city folk have all sorts of weird (and wrong) notions about rural areas.
I see this all the time with my friends who moved down here from NY/NJ. About half think the glades is freaking Jurassic Park, the other half think its Gramercy Park. The former won't step off pavement, the later wind up in the hospital and/or emerge from the bush dehydrated and looking like they got worked over by Freddy Kruger because they went out wearing shorts and Tevas.

One important concept of the Libertarian philosophy, is that we are individuals, and should be treated as such...
His blatant Racism, and classism, clearly shows he is NOT a Libertarian.

You got 500 acres in 20 different odd shaped pieces due to natural barriers. How are you going to organize the planting to minimize fuel usage and wear and tear on the equipment during the course of a year?
Do you even know how to begin approaching that problem?
That's an operations research linear programming problem BTW. It can be solved with Simplex. Farming is full of such problems.

Of course you eliminated urban areas from the data, right? right?

All you ancients -- like, sixty? -- better get the hell off of here while JR's laying about with the sticks he's broke the furniture into. You might, like, remember shit or something.
I can remember some "simple" farmers such as A Certain Party is clumping-up here. But they left the field about 50 years ago. I only know two classes of farmers: highly educated crop managers with well-developed HR skills, and devil-may-care gamblers with a day job, either at a car parts plant, a post office, or driving a semi. There is some overlap. And I know a lot of farmers.

Or maybe I'm just the product of a rural school system...that had higher graduation rates than any urban system, that sent more to college than the nearby urban systems, and that had people move there, from cities, explicitly because the rural public school system was vastly superior to the nearby urban ones.
Nebraska high school graduation rate -- high 80% range.
California high school graduation rate -- high 60% range.
New York high school graduation rate -- low 70% range.
Indiana had higher SAT scores in 2011 than NY. So did North Carolina and Vermont.

Well yeah, but modern Libertarians haven't actually studied libertarian philosophy. They call themselves Libertarians because (a) Republicans are "icky" (b) they want legal pot and legal gay marriage. So the whole "demonization of entire classes of people, in direct contrast to well-established Libertarian philosophy" is fair game to these punks.

Ask a reasonable woman about this. She may personally abhor abortion, but she still wants the option "just in case." It's not about abortion of OTHER women, it's about abortion for HER, "just in case." That is the practical view, that is the self-interest view. Sorry, but that's how it really is, IMHO.
The trick is to appeal to BOTH the personal, self-interest of woman AND to use the Democrats favorite cudgel, "FAIRNESS"
Romney could have diffused the issue this way, with a public, high profile, explicit:
"Abortion is legal in the USA. I personally opposed it, but in my administration there will be no attempts to change that, but neither will there be any expansion of it.
"The decision to abort, as stated many times by the pro-choice side, is between a woman and her doctor. The funding will stay that way as well.
"The federal government will stay out of your bedroom and out of your personal decisions on the consequences of what you do in the bedroom.
"That is only fair to those who believe that abortion is murder. There will be no federal funding for this deeply personal issue."
I look at it this way: there is not a chance in HELL that abortion is going to be eliminated in this country. NONE. Until we get honest about that, women, especially younger ones, will absolutely vote for the person who promises that her ability to have one is guaranteed. And an appeal to the fairness of paying for her own abortion would work.

Mitt Romney beat himself with the 47% comment late in the campaign. Pure and simple. Blue collars and RETIRED people relying on Social Security checked out. Christians of all colors and denominations stayed home in droves, just couldn't get it up with a Mormon. White people of every persuasion in EVERY state just said "fuck it".
Republicans beat themselves. I'm sick to death of it and will be an Independant the rest of my days. Since the election I've cut my "blog" time down by 75%, and only visit this site (which I previously visted at least twice a day 7 days a week) every few days. I'm done, as I'm sure millions of other white people are.
There isn't a conservative pundit I can read or listen to that has a clue. I'm pissed and intend on staying that way.

Here's a clue -- those people you see at your "farmers market" aren't real farmers. Real farmers don't got time for that kind of small caliber shit.
What you think are "farmers" are guys who got a truck somewhere who are working an arbitrage game buying from actual farmers, or hobbyists working a few acres so they can continue to have their land taxed at lower agricultural rates.
This goes on around here all the time. A watermelon at Publix or Walmart is $4-5, the same watermelon in a field over in Plant City (a FL ag area) is $.80. People get a truck, go over to Plant City, fill it with $.80 melons, then drive them back here to Palm Beach and sell them at a "farmers market" for $3.
Those people aren't farmers, nor do they have any of the skill set farmers have. They got a truck, and know they can turn a few bucks moving melons from point A to point B.

How dare all those spanish-speaking hordes dare to move to places like Los Angeles, San Antonio, San Francisco, La Florida, Colorado, Nevada and Nuevo Mexico? They obviously don't belong there!!!!
Btw, if you lot are ever tempted to discuss something seriously, why don't you check how many latin american countries have made abortion legal? or when did they legalize divorce? gay marriage? Then you can discuss whether "latins" are conservative or not. And btw again, for every Chavez and Castro you can find 2 dozens of Pinochet, Somozas, Videlas, Stroessners etc - although conservative talk show hosts may not know what these are, they don't show up in their briefings.
