— Dave in Texas Part of the desperate struggle in the Solomon Straits, and the last major surface vessel fight over Guadalcanal.
Five American cruisers and four destroyers intercepted a Japanese force of eight destroyers attempting to deliver supplies to Guadalcanal for the Japanese 17th Army. The fighting on Guadalcanal, which began in August of '42 had reached a critical stage for the Japanese, who were using submarines to deliver supplies. But the submarine forces could only deliver enough food and ammunition for a day's worth of fighting.
.jpg)
A strategic victory, but a very costly tactical defeat. The American forces intercepted a Japanese communication, which revealed the plan to drop heavier supplies to the beleaguered 17th Army. The US Navy engaged with superior forces, but the Japanese advantage in night surface fighting, and their more effective "Long Lance" torpedo (SWIDT) turned the fight into a significant tactical loss for the Navy. As the Japanese struggled to disengage, they launched over 40 torpedoes at the American ships.
At 2327, however, the Japanese struck the first of a series of crippling torpedo blows. Within one minute both the Minneapolis and the New Orleans had their bows blown off. Eleven minutes later, at 2339, the Pensacola was hit, and the resulting fire was not extinguished for 4 hours. Two torpedoes struck the Northampton at 2348, causing her to sink within the same space of time. In 20 minutes the fortunes of war shifted disastrously.
The results were horrific. Of the five cruisers that engaged, Northampton was lost. New Orleans, Pensacola and Minneapolis were heavily damaged. New Orleans, was hit in a forward magazine which completely destroyed her bow before the second gun turret. The Japanese lost one destroyer. It was a strategic victory for the Americans, the Japanese could not resupply. And yet one of the worst defeats for the Navy, leaving them only with four operational heavy cruisers and nine light cruisers in the Pacific.
One of those heavy cruisers left to the fight was the USS Indianapolis. A Portland class cruiser which was preceded by the Northampton class, and succeeded by the New Orleans class heavy cruisers of WWII.

Gotta admit, Dave. Those guys on the sharp end during WWII had huge balls...or they were the crazy type of brave and courageous...or both. Almost everywhere, the fight was to the knife, and often, very up close and very personal.

I have kids now that refuse to believe the U.S. landed men on the moon. Now we don't even have a manned space program. I explain to them that this used to be a great country that did great things. Sadly, those days are behind us, and while they last, I advise them to enjoy the bread and circuses.

This was told in the excellent book
"Neptune's Inferno" by James Hornfischer
There were four other major surface battles, which were also described in the book.
One was a terribly lop-sided defeat of the Americans (5 cruisers were lost, and that was kept from the American public for months), another was a decisive victory for the US Navy, where a lot of good command (Admiral Scott) and shooting took place, another was a terrible battle which was a stragetic victory with many brave men in the US Navy killed and ships lost, and the fourth was a terrrific battleship battle, with the US Navy coming out on top.
All these battles were at night, with the great training, command and tactics of the IJN versus erratic command and radar for the US Navy. Many of the command officers of the US Navy did not believe in or understand radar at the time, which could have given them a tremendous advantage in almost every battle.
And that was why the area around Guadalcanal was called Ironbottom Sound. We also lost the Hornet to daylight air attacks there.

A brand new technology that was by no means mature. Those fragile, slow-moving contraptions were likely to rip a wing off if they were maneuvered too hard, or burst into flames if you looked at them funny. And for most of the war, the pilots didn't have parachutes.
Those guys spit in the face of Death on a daily basis. It's like they didn't fucking care.
Behold the story of Lieutenant Louis Strange, Royal Flying Corps. He equipped his Martinsyde scout with a Lewis gun on the top wing. The ammunition drum had only 47 shells. To change the drum, Strange had to undo his safety belt and stand up in the cockpit.
On May 10, 1915, strange tried out his new weapon in combat for the first time. He engaged an Aviatik two seater, firing off his 47 rounds of ammo. When he stood up to change the drums, his aircraft turned turtle, dumping Strange from the cockpit. He held on to the drum of the machine gun as the scout went into a flat spin, upside down, Strange dangling from the machine gun.
Strange tried to haul his legs up in front of him back into the cockpit but succeeded only in destroying his instrument panel, which fell out. He then kicked his legs behind him, over and over until he got his feet inside the rim of the cockpit. He arched his back until he could reach the control stick and righted the aircraft so violently that he fell onto the seat on his back. The seat and its supports broke, so Strange flew back to base sitting on the floor of the aircraft. Every time he raised his body to get his visual bearings--having no compass and being unable to see over the cockpit edges--he lost control of the aircraft again, because he had to take his feet off the rudder pedals.
After landing blindly at his base, he got into terrible trouble with his superiors for destroying the instrument panel and seat of his scout. Nobody on the base believed his story.
After the war, a British journalist found the after-action report of the German Aviatik crew, who witnessed the entire episode. They, too, weren't believed by their commanders.
The writer introduced Strange to the two Germans, and they told him they were grateful he'd survived, because they'd never seen such a horrifying sight in their lives.

All my charitable giving is going overseas (e.g. Coptic Christians, even the Jews in Russia needing food for Rosh Hashana)) My reply to the local charities: "Get it from the government."
Seriously. This is war.

yeah I agree mostly, the people who are itching for revolution or chaos are a bit overwrought.
the solution is to take over your local GOP HQ and put it on the necessary right track. not because Boehner is some saint - but because we have a 2-party system, and the other party hates us, so the only alternative left is to transform the party that doesn't hate us into a force that actually fights for us.

Anybody ever heard of Billy Fiske? His daddy was a Mega-banker, magnate, and he won gold, as the driver, at the '28 and '32 Olympics in bobsled/bobsleigh. The 1st when he was 16, was the youngest of any Olympic gold ever, at the time. He was described as the quintessential amateur. He was evidently a "hit" in St. Moritz, where he did the Cresta Run (like early luge, in the streets, only he did it head first). He declined to go to the Hitler games. Was one of the founders of Aspen. Helped build the first lift (the Boat Tow). Joined the RAF (in the "Millionaires Squadron") and was one of the first American pilots killed in WWII.
A short but incredibly full life. Pretty cool dude!

I remember when that gay biker gang invaded the 2007 Berkley Furry Convention like it was yesterday, cons. It was horrific, cons. My ass bled for two weeks, cons. Jizz and Astroglide flowed through the aisles like a river, cons. The stench of ballsweat, shit, and fursuits being burnt with cigarettes is something I'll never forget, cons. We were due for a re-supply of Cheetos, Red Bull, and ecstasy, but those damn bikers in their ass-hugging leather chaps were monitoring our Twitter feed and intercepted our convoy of SmartCars, captured our supplies, and had buttsex with the drivers for the rest of the day. DO YOU KNOW WHAT IT'S LIKE TO ENJOY BEING SODOMIZED BY GAY BIKERS WHO ALL LOOK LIKE ROB HALFORD FOR 12 HOURS, CONS?!?!? HAVE YOU HAD YOUR ASS POUNDED UNMERCIFULLY AND GONE WITHOUT ENERGY DRINKS AND ECSTASY FOR AN ENTIRE AFTERNOON, CONS?!?!?!?
As arduous an ordeal as it was, I'm not bitter, cons. I got in contact with the bikers and we hold re-enactments of the battle every weekend, cons. Sometimes the bikers even dress up like Nazis and beat my bare ass with riding crops, cons. Every morning when I put in my buttplug before I go to work my gloryhole I have flashbacks, cons.

Sounds like the kinda cheesy crap post-1989 George Lucas would put in an adventure movie. Unbelievable.
I wish someone would make a movie about the B-17 mechanics based at Clark Field in the Philippines who built their own bomber from spare parts after the surviving B-17s were flown to Australia.
The mechanics had to be left behind, so they cobbled together a B-17 from whatever was lying around (the Japanese had bombed the field on December 8, 1941, so there were lots of carcasses available).
Once they had a completed aircraft, they boarded it and figured out how to fly it, every mechanic contributing what he knew about flying by remembering conversations he'd overheard between crew members of his own operational bomber.
Two mechanics were chosen as pilot and copilot, and they took off, navigated the thing to Australia, and landed it safely, all by committee.

Use the engineer analogy. Suppose someone puts enormous effort into designing a bridge/building, a truly herculean effort, thousands and thousands of man hours...
...and then the bridge/building collapses and kills hundreds of people.
After they graduate, and get out in the field, ALL the "tests" they encounter for the rest of their life are OPEN BOOK, but failing one will kill people or cost vast sums of money.

Whatever it takes, here I am until there is no more.
I CAN make a difference at my local level, and THAT is where the effort will be concentrated.

Approaching a store, I saw an old man in front, washing the window. He was whistling an intricate classical piece and seemed really happy. As I approached him, he turned and said "Good morning! Isn't it beautiful?" in Dutch. I responded. He smiled and went back to his window.
His sleeves were rolled up. On his left forearm was a Nazi death-camp tattoo.
Whenever I feel that my problems are overwhelming, I think of that old man.

First, fracking and energy independence, Barry will have to let that happen.
Second, recent story linked at Insty, about how China will not be able to feed itself in a few years. They are addicted to our soybeans and corn and that will not go away.
What does this mean? The Red states are going to bail out the coastal states yet again.

Dave thanks.
I am sorry.
I do try to be decent, but decency is simply an avenue of attack for the people who are willfully driving the train off the tracks.
Were it in my power I would save everyone, as it now stands I can see it very possibly being finally that I can save no one.
I joined the Army to fight communism and it LOOKED gone.
I decided Saddam could stunt double.
My wife joined in 1997 and she decided that radical islam was a big enough threat to endure soldiering that I cannot truly comprehend.
The restraint we DEMAND of the kids now....totally alien to me and I probably could never do it.
I am out of answers, and I fear that the internal GOP war means I will in a cowardly fashion cede politics like I ceded the classroom in my youth.
I now KNOW that my inability to endure political correctness has defacto enslaved a generation of kids to Bill Ayers.
I am mad at the US but mostly I am ashamed of myself.
I went blue collar, wasted a degree path I had almost finished and hid behind hard physical work because I lack the self control to force myself to deal with adverse intellectual venues.
I may have lost my nation to communists without their ever firing a shot at me and I fear my grandkids hating me if/when I am graced with them.

In my youth, I admired Joe Paterno. About 20 years ago I realized that he was a flaming asshole. How you ask?
He never let the player's name be put on the backs of their jerseys.

All of us here understand your feelings but from the outside it's clear you're working yourself into a frenzy of anger, frustration, despair and a little self-loathing. Nothing good ever comes from this. And ranting about it on the internet doesn't help either. Take some time off, do something different for while. The paper just announced the poverty level in CLT schools. 54% of all kids K-12 qualify for free meals. The highest? 97% in an elementary school in a democrat area. The lowest 11%. Those are bussed in, that HS school is 100% in a Republican area.
Pretty sad. Public schools are warehouses that teach little democrats that everything is free, just show up.

We're a long, long way from death camps.
I don't compare our current situation with that of people who survived Auschwitz, Bergen-Belsen, Sobibor, and Treblinka.
If you took a time machine back to 1944 and asked an inmate of Auschwitz if he or she wanted to stay there or come to Obama's America, what do you think they'd say?
Perspective is useful.

There's a happy medium between preserving the system as it is and blowing up the whole thing.
Beware what you wish for. Having been born and raised in a lawless Third World country, I don't think you quite know what's in store for us if "let it burn" becomes the dominant philosophy.
What inevitably happens is that "let it burn" gets extended to individuals, not just institutions. In Somalia and Liberia, people take what they want by force, and society is divided into two strata: predators and prey.
You may think you're prepared for letting it all burn, but I'm betting that you really aren't. And since it's unnecessary, it's not helpful to wish for it.

Oct Admiral Scott took a cruiser force to oppose the Tokyo Express and managed to derail it. In Nov Scott was involved in CA/DD duel with the IJN. This was the infamous call of cease fire because the US formation got messed up and Scott though US ships were firing on each other. By the end of this battle, Adm Scott would be dead and his flagship USS San Francisco had taken more than 20 hits.
Then there was the BB duel between USS Washington and USS South Dakota under the command of Admiral Lee. Prelude to this combat, according to one source, he told the Peter Tares to back off and his name was 'Chinese Catchee.' The two US BBs slugged it out with the IJN BBs Hiei and Kirishima.
There were also pure DD duels. Ainsworth, Moosbrugger, and Burke. From one of these combats Arleigh Burke got the nickname '31-knot Burke.'
As for USS New Orleans. IIRC from 'And Pass the Ammunition' which was written by New Orleans chaplain, after Tassafaronga, a temporary wooden bow was fitted in theatre before she returned home for repairs. The concussion of the torpedo hit that tore away the bow and No. 1 turret killed the entire gun crew of No. 2 turret. After the battle sailors from other divisions manned No.2 turret.

Well, the L.A. Co. Sheriff is handicapped by this little thing called "due process". He can't just up and shoot all the gang-bangers, as much has he might like to.
But in a LiB scenario, when central authority has broken down, and there is no functioning court system, then the County Sheriff who is faced with an invasion of urban gang-bangers will have no such restrictions on him. He and his posse will simply shoot, shovel, and shut up.

Dang. Yet another WWII thread I missed here on the Left Coast.
Haven't read through all the comments (what? isn't that required here?), but just happened to just finish reading "Neptune's Inferno" about a month ago.
Thing about the cruiser night actions, of which Tassafaronga was one, is that they were, as described by USMC above, like bar fights in the dark. My "favorite" one wasn't the melee Annu Puma mentions, where the US ships got mixed up and had to stop shooting for fear of friendly fire (which happened anyway), but the action of Oct. 11 - Battle of Cape Esperance - where the US force had the drop on the Japanese force thanks to reconnaissance intel and finally, radar. The columns drew to within 3,000 yards - absolutely point-blank in naval gunnery terms. Amazing. The US side fired first (and furiously - continuous rapid fire, not rhythmic salvos) and got the better of it. A true bar-room brawl, in the dark.
As I've said here before, anyone interested should read all of Hornfischer's books, esp. Neptune's Inferno and Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors.
Thanks, Dave, for your steady stream of notable WWII anniversaries. I've gotta check the blog more often so I can be in the thick of the comments, and not lost to the rear like one of Adm. Scott's lost destroyers .......
