Now Racist: Peanut Butter & Jelly Sandwiches
— Ace

Via Twitchy (via @snarkandboobs) with the sarcasm and such, a Portland educator wants you to ponder all the ethnonormative assumptions packed into your PB&J.

By the way, the Portland Tribune isn't snarky about this -- they give this idiot the Bold Hero Slant.

Verenice Gutierrez picks up on the subtle language of racism every day.

Take the peanut butter sandwich, a seemingly innocent example a teacher used in a lesson last school year.

“What about Somali or Hispanic students, who might not eat sandwiches?” says Gutierrez, principal at Harvey Scott K-8 School, a diverse school of 500 students in Northeast Portland’s Cully neighborhood.

“Another way would be to say: ‘Americans eat peanut butter and jelly, do you have anything like that?’ Let them tell you. Maybe they eat torta. Or pita.”

Guitierrez, along with all of Portland Public Schools’ principals, will start the new school year off this week by drilling in on the language of “Courageous Conversations,” the district-wide equity training being implemented in every building in phases during the past few years.

Through intensive staff trainings, frequent staff meetings, classroom observations and other initiatives, the premise is that if educators can understand their own “white privilege,” then they can change their teaching practices to boost minority students’ performance.

I remember reading, say, 20-25 years ago, a pundit fretting about the loss of liberal persuasiveness -- why was the public growing tired of liberal appeals and electing awful insane conservatives?

The proposed answer was "Compassion Fatigue." That liberals had created such a vast and sprawling list of things we all needed to be compassionate about, and think lots of bien pensant thoughts about, that many were getting weary of it all and just wanted to get back to something called "living our own lives."

Do we ever get to just make a peanut butter & jelly sandwich for a kid, or do we have to don the hairshirt whenever we do anything?

"Courageous Conversations:" These seem to be the "Courageous Conversations" referenced in the article. Via @morgenr.

Again I ask: Can I ever stop learning about you and just live my life?

Jesus, how insulting can they be?   "Little Mbutu     doesn't know what a sandwich is, so we can't mention sandwiches."    Hey, how about instead    of denying the kid the opportunity to LEARN   ABOUT SANDWICHES IN A LEARNING ENVIRONMENT,     maybe we stop thinking about it so much and just fucking let a sandwich be a g-ddamn      sandwich.    If     I was in Somalia    (God forbid)    I'd expect to learn about the local foodstuffs because I'd want to be able to eat.       What do they eat in Somalia anyway?   I mean, besides stuff they pirated off Western ships,    looted from Christians and Jews, or scrounged out from under a rock?

So... they come to this country because its a really cool place... and then want to make it just like the shit hole they left?

And the LEFT caters to this stupidity... and MAKES MONEY OFF IT!  All that teacher training and stuff is not free you know...

I remember in the late 80's when the US Navy tried to implement "Total Quality Management"... it was a F'n disaster because you cannot run a military like a business... it just don't work.  Funny how all that crap went right out the window (Vision statements? WTF?) as soon as we heard we were deploying for what became Desert Storm.... (but LOTS of idiots made money off the Navy before that, writing manuals, and we ALL went to multiple seminars).

It's not about being more compassionate and understanding, it's about proving that you are ever so much more understanding and compassionate and so very sensitive. You know, here's the thing. If I were teaching in, say, Japan, I would not use the pb&j analogy, it would be rice or tentacles or some other normal, common place thing. It's called being aware of the cultural norms in which you are located. This is nothing less than an attempt to deny that there are cultural norms that other should abide by here.

That's the reason, to get as many kids to a base level of knowledge/understanding/whatever in order to function at a certain level.  Teach UP, not down.

It that Somali or hispanic student is so traumatized by the suggestion of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, maybe that Somali or hispanic student should return to his/her own country, where he/she can live without the fear of constantly being exposed to U.S. culture.

But if these foreigners are going to come and live here in OUR country so they can take advantage of all that OUR country has to offer, then they had damn well better understand that they are going to have to make some adjustments to the fact that they are choosing to live in OUR culture, and we're not going to change who we are or how we live just to avoid potentially offending their ethnic sensibilities.

Chuck Barber, who also offers boysÂ’ drum corps at Vernon and Faubion schools in Northeast Portland, approached Gutierrez last year to start up a lunch-time drum class for black and Latino boys once a week....

At least one parent has a problem with the the class, saying it amounts to “blatant discrimination and equity of women, Asians, whites and Native Americans.”

“This ‘club’ was approved by the administration, and any girls who complained were brushed off and it was not addressed,” the parent wrote anonymously.

Gutierrez denies that any students were turned away from the drum corps, and vehemently rejects any suggestion that it is discrimination to offer a club catering to minority boys.

“When white people do it, it is not a problem, but if it’s for kids of color, then it’s a problem?” says Gutierrez, 40, an El Paso, Texas, native whose parents were Mexican immigrants. “Break it down for me. That’s your white privilege, and your whiteness.”

In what alternate fucking universe would any school in the country be allowed to get away with an activity specifically for white students, you dumb racist twat?

Western Leftism is the suicidal endgame of white guilt. The ultimate atonement for the most illusory sin pushed by the fevered self-hating minds of the weakest and most demented personalities. This is the risk that individualism carries with it - as is true for all powrful tools. It's offset by the great power, dynamism, and freedom of individualism but our system can succumb to it if this demented population reaches a critical mass or if non-Westerners reach a level to set off a sub-critical mass of self-hating, depraved, delusional Western leftists.

Wait, is 'veil' racist? Posted by: Tonic Dog at September 10, 2012 03:14 PM (X/+QT) This is because the left sees people as simply categories, as mere classifications. It is also integral to how they think, and integral for what they plan on doing. The left reduces people to "PC" stereotypes. The left then says that strait white males will destroy that, and therefor the womyn/minority/LGBTQ individual must sacrifice their independent thought to support their own group, as defined by the left. The left then promises to arrange things so that everyone ends up living in tolerance and harmony -- this is the social equivalent of Corporatism. Their thought is a paragon of fascism.

Oh and as noticed above, peanut butter is a banned substance in schools.  It started with "peanut free" tables in the lunchroom, and moved on to "peanut free classrooms" but now it's just banned in many schools.

I guess today's black arbiters of what is racist don't know that (a black man) George Washington Carver invented peanut butter, along with lots of other peanut products.  In order to provide ways for newly freed blacks to grow a product and add value to it and take it to market and support themselves in a free society.

208 Late to make a comment I wanted to regarding the polls and election on the last couple threads, so I'll go O/T.

The PPP Ohio poll was released specifically to support the "perception meme" that Obama is trying to get out there.  It was accompanied by targeted concern trolling and compliant media writing supporting articles. Obama is winning, Romney knows it, Romney is giving up on Ohio, there is little chance of victory, the election is over.

Pretty much sums up the weekend, doesn't it?

Here is where I will disagree with Ace.  Obama doesn't have a small bump that is putting him in a winning position that needs to be addressed.  OBAMA IS STILL LOSING AND NEVER PULLED AHEAD.

The PPP poll uses a D+4 sample, and a Women+9 sample.  If you renormalize those numbers to actual Ohio demographics, Romney has a 3 point lead in Ohio in their poll.  Add in the undecideds and you get an easy Ohio win for Romney.  Ohio is MUST WIN for Obama.  If he loses it, he has no path to victory.

What this weekend was about was changing the perception, and a lot of people bought into it.  Obama is losing Ohio, and he is trying to switch things up and claim momentum from the DNC to get the "vote for the winner" types to pick him.

The real danger to Romney is going to be on Oct 3rd.

Regardless of what happens in the debate, the MFM is going to go into full throated declaration that Obama "destroyed" Romney.  They will spin it as hard as they can, to drive the perception among those who didn't watch the debates that Obama is the clear winner/favorite.

How we address and defeat the predetermined spin from the media is going to be the real issue.

@204 - we had to cope with that  when my older daughter went through pre-school.

There was a kid at the school, not in her grade, not in her room, but at the pre-school, that was deathly allergic to  peanuts.  So, while that child was there, no one  could bring peanut products of any sort to the  school,  out of fear that,  as a two-year-old, somehow  another child might leave behind an errant Ritz Bitz in the lunch area, then  this girl might find it and eat it  off  the floor.

Which I can be somewhat compassionate about.  Have a kid with special food needs is a challenge.  I already understood that, because, as the father of my finicky little girl, the only sammich I could reliably send her to preschool with and know she would eat was a PB&J.  Baloney?  NO!  Cold cuts?  NO!  Cheese?  NO!  So, my only solution was to send her to preschool that year with only-jelly sammiches.  Which, as a four-year-old, she LURVED.  And, as a parent, I could only make up for by making sure the other meals she got  were  extra protein-y...?  Were balanced to make  up for her  twice-weekly  sugar-sammich.

Far be it from me to deny another kid social interaction, but really, at what point as a parent do you realize "Hey, wow, this is  gonna wind up being a huge inconvenience for the other 99 families that go to this place.  Maybe we'll just schedule some more playdates with friends instead, or come and pick her up and take her  out for lunchtime..."  That's what Mrs. Reason would have done.

The Chicago Public Schools is less than 10% white.  Considering all the consent decrees involve eye-droppering out those white children to achieve diversity, CPS and the other big city systems are failing miserably at it.   The fights over how to achieve "diversity" in the face of those demographics would be amusing if it weren't so pathetic.

266 With this kind of crap infesting the schools, no wonder the kids don't learn anything. Who has time to teach math when there's ridiculousity to dwell upon...for hours and hours...and hours...

I'm fairly convinced that the entire government-school concept was invented as a kind of enormous make-work, tax-and-spend project.

Genuine learning and smarts-development is a rare and incidental occurrence.  The main purpose of public school is daytime-containment of young people, and (of course) a pretext to tax the shit out of people to subsidize a large, useless group of ne'er-do-wells.

288 281 My daughter had a similar experience in 4th grade, at private school. One girl had severe peanut allergies, so she had to eat at a separate table, and her teacher had to know how to give epipen shots in case something happened. Kids who wanted to eat with her (my daughter, who didn't want her to be alone) couldn't have peanut butter/peanuts. But this was my daughter's willing choice-she asked for food that was safe around her friend, and we were able to accomodate this. I didn't mind, and I was very proud of my kid for being a decent person. But the school was not going to force everyone to accomodate the child, and eventually her mother moved her to public school, where that happened. I think mom may have been a bit of a power tripper.

302 On top of all the other ridiculousness, it appear another motive here is to avoid admitting some of the kids aren't as intelligent as the others. And worse, if you charted their proficiency indexed against certain other aspects of those kids, you might see a pattern emerging.

Any reasonably bright child is into going to be fazed by a problem using an unfamiliar foodstuff as an object. It's math, not recipes for Home Ec. If I have fifteen objects, it doesn't matter if they're PBandJ sandwiches, bowl's of lark's vomit soup, veeblegetzers, or whatever else nonsensical item that might be ingested. IT'S FRIGGIN' MATH! If your kid doesn't get it, the problem is far less likely to be an unfamiliarity with the food and much more likely that the child is lacking in the IQ attribute.

At a hotel in Southern Utah, near the Grand Canyon, we were eating the hotel breakfast and I felt like peanut butter and apples.  I doubt most Americans eat peanut butter and apples for breakfast, or at all, but I do.  I used the plastic knives to cut up the apple and scooped peanut butter with it... one of my favorite breakfasts...

314 You came to this country because of our ethos, values and culture. Yes, culture. We Americas do have our own culture. I know currently liberals find that an egregiously racist statement. But it's the truth, which is why they have to demonize anybody who feels that way. Then tell us how we should "respect" every other culture. Well except ours.

If you wanted your culture, you should have stayed where you were and performed the hard work we did in America to change the aspects of your culture with which you did not disagree.. It's not about your culture in America it's about ours. Collectively. It's also not about changing our culture. Not only is that insulting but selfish to every other person who came before you.

When my forefathers came to this country, they came for the opportunities and values uniquely American. They changed how they dressed, spoke and lived their lives because they wanted to become Americans. They didn't want to be foreigners who just happened to live in America. Nor did they take handouts. None, no matter how poor they were.

To be certain, they kept some of their traditions, but never tried to impose those upon their neighbors. They didn't want to change the Constitution, because they felt it was the most magnificent document every authored. Nor did they want cradle to grave guarantees- except one. Continued opportunity.

To properly be a "Sandwich" in the tradition of the Earl, one must eat the confection while sitting on the head of a turbaned mohammedan and whipping a mic.

That's why it's so difficult for Somalis to count sandwiches, it draws back toward emotional trauma they sustained in their homeland, where rich white Sandwichers with cigarette holders would ride their aunts around the yard whipping the children for sport.

329 The "intensive training" etc. sounds like the good old Marxist self-criticism sessions.  Wonder why...

This country is shot.  It's whole focus is on silly insane shit like this.  A noble experiment but it's over.

331 White men! White women! The peanut butter and jelly sandwich is calling you. The sacred and ancient symbol of your race, since the beginning of time. The Jew is using The Black as muscle against you. And you are left there helpless. Well, what are you going to do about it, Whitey? Just sit there? Of course not! You are going to join with us. The members of the American Socialist White Peoples' Party. An organization of decent, law abiding white folk. Just like you!

332 Oh for heaven's sake! By this idiotic standard EVERYTHING we eat, read, talk about, watch on TV, draw, play, how we comb our hair, fold our towels, organise our pantries, the way we sleep and how we brush our teeth, whether we use Scotch tape or a generic brand, do we like roller or ice skating better, is that camera water proof?, cutting up white paper to make snowflakes, text or e-mail, did you water the plant today? are all racist and we need to adapt new ways STAT so we don't offend the immigrants who came to this country five years or three generations ago. This BS is simply another way to create divisions, such as by teaching kids who were born and raised here that this or that other country is "their country", despite that they have never been there, don't speak the language and have no idea about the culture. Yet still they can't eat a bloody P, B & J for fear of dying from super offense--when half the time they just want to bicker with their friends about what's the best drink to go with it. And yes, ffs, WHITE paper, because SNOW IS EFFING WHITE!!!!!!!!

333 @290 So just the other day, there was a story up @ Slashdot about the Canadian system of voting. Slashdot attracts an international audience, but the most common theme to all the comments, regardless of where the commenters were from, was that ID was required to vote. Who knew Canadians and Swedes were so _RAAAACIIIISSSSSTTTT_!!!!1111

334 These are all kids enrolled in American schools, right? Presumably, even if the kids are foreign-born (or have foreign parents) there's SOME intention of acculturating the youngsters to American life. How 'bout the cafeteria serves PBJ's to every kid, waaaay early in the school year. Then EVERYBODY knows what a PBJ sandwich is, and the educrats can get on with teaching ... whatever the heck it was. And nobody has to accuse anybody of bigotry due to the food choices they use as teaching examples. = = = Sheesh! "Ethnocentrism bad." We wouldn't wanna imply that typical American foods are typical American foods, now would we? At what age do you suppose it's permissible to introduce these delicate foreign flowers to the concept of "mac 'n' cheese"?

335 Having had gone through one of these "racial consciousness raising" seminars, I conclude that they are nothing more than white-bashing bitch sessions. The people conducting them (always people of color) don't even realize their own bigotry in the things they say.

336 I really can't comment on any of this.  I've got too much peanut butter stuck to the roof of my mouth.

337 So Verenice Gutierrez (the idiot principal at Scott school in Portland, Oregon) thinks that peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are racist? This woman is beyond stupid and has no business being in a school. She certainly has no business being a principal of a school.

Let this idiot principal know what you think. Contact her!
