— Ace Failure will be subsidized, and success will be ruthlessly stamped out.
Success Academy is run by Eva Moscowitz, someone hated by the teachers unions and the left. So of course she must be destroyed, and if there is some collateral damage in the form of children, so be it. Such things happen in war.
What a small and politically vicious man New York's new mayor is. Bill de Blasio doesn't like charter schools. They are too successful to be tolerated. Last week he announced he will drop the ax on three planned Success Academy schools. (You know Success Academy: It was chronicled in the film "Waiting for Superman." It's one of the charter schools the disadvantaged kids are desperate to get into.) Mr. de Blasio has also cut and redirected the entire allotment for charter facility funding from the city's capitol budget. An official associated with a small, independent charter school in the South Bronx told me the decision will siphon money from his school's operations. He summed up his feelings with two words: "It's dispiriting."Some 70,000 of the city's one million students, most black or Hispanic, attend charter schools, mostly in poorer neighborhoods. Charter schools are privately run but largely publicly financed. Their teachers are not unionized. Their students usually outscore their counterparts at conventional public schools on state tests. Success Academy does particularly well. Last year 82% of its students passed citywide math exams. Citywide the figure was 30%.
These are schools that work. They are something to be proud of and encourage.
...
We close with a little red meat because there's something in this story—frightened children, cold political operators—that gets our blood up.
...
In this move more than any so far, Mr. de Blasio shows signs he is what his critics warned he would be—a destructive force in the city of New York. When a man says he will raise taxes to achieve a program like pre-K education, and is quickly informed that that program can be achieved without raising taxes, and his answer is that he wants to raise taxes anyway, that man is an ideologue.
And ideologues will sacrifice anything to their ideology. Even children.
There's a lot more at the link.
Meanwhile, Governor Cuomo is holding a rally with.. Eva Moscowitz.
De BlasioÂ’s rally in support of a higher tax on wealthy New Yorkers was not specifically targeted at education, but across town, Andrew Cuomo joined Success Academy CEO Eva Moskowitz at a different rally promoting charter schools. Although de Blasio downplayed the significance of the charter rally, itÂ’s a big deal. Moskowitz is his chief opponent in the charter school co-location fight. Indeed, de Blasio specifically mentioned the need to reduce MoskowitzÂ’s influence as a reson for the policy shift, and Moskowitz has responded with plenty of harsh words of her own. By appearing at the rally, Cuomo effectively endorsed de BlasioÂ’s biggest rival. And heÂ’s not just a silent partner; he spoke forcefully about the need to protect charter schools. . . .
More at Mead, who calls NY state the chief battleground in the war on charter schools, where their fate will be determined in a struggle between the liberal coalition's moderate/liberal wings, and its leftist wing -- the tail that now actually wags the dog.

This issue particularly infuriates me. My daughter teaches at a charter school in the south Bronx, in the poorest CD in the country. Her kids tell her school is the best part of their day. My daughter is phenomenal with children. She spent years looking for a teaching job, getting her Masters and keeping her accreditations up to date. And she may be out of a job because this commies scumsucker wants to play politics with the lives of the poorest children in the city? He should diaf.

With all the education money floating around, you would think there would be enough to fund these schools.
It's not about the funding. It's about the lack of unionized teachers.

So on the hand, we have the godless Leftists, and on the other hand, we have men like you, so steeped in vengefulness and hate, you cheerfully embrace the destruction of kids who literally have no idea what the blue fuck their parents are doing to them.

More from Peggy, because it's delicious:
"There is a "strong private-sector element" in their funding, he {DeBlasio} said. The mayor agreed with host Ebro Darden that "a lot" of charter schools are funded by big business: "Oh yeah, a lot of them are funded by very wealthy Wall Street folks and others." When Mr. Darden and co-host Peter Rosenberg suggested that a "campaign" to portray the mayor as anti-charter-school was also funded by big business, Mr. de Blasio, as the New York Post noted, didn't disagree. "I think you're providing a keen political analysis there."
Clever people usually try to hide their animus. This one doesn't care if you know how he feels about that "element."

Right, but...there's a reason for that. The reason is that the vast majority of New Yorkers are liberal Democrats.
I lived in Brooklyn for almost ten years. Everyone was a freaking liberal Democrat. Period.
The fact of the matter is that even though most of them couldn't be bothered to vote, they still supported De Blasio. And they do deserve to live with the consequences of that.
But, still, those poor kids don't deserve to be shafted like they're being shafted.

If you think the ny schools are bad, you should see hawaiistan's<<
Hawaii actually has a higher high school graduation rate than NY (comprehensively).
But the reason NY as a state is dragged down is due to the ridiculously low number in NYC. Ranked alone, NYC is one of the worst in the nation.
There are other districts in the suburbs that are mostly in the high 90%'s. That is the only reason NY isn't at the bottom.

So what you are saying is it's still being treated as a local issue.
Rubio somehow managed to make amnesty a national issue, even though he was essentially pandering to his local voters. Jan Brewer made "protecting gays from discrimination" a national issue.
It gets done. Even by Republicans who are NOT swinging left.
Frankly, I don't see why someone like Palin, or heck, even Romney doesn't make this their number one issue, and beat it like the proverbial red-headed stepmule.
If they R party could or would do that, they might actually win a national election off this one issue alone.

Make the D party OWN Bill Deblasio.
The same way they make the R's own Akin and O'Donnell and any number of other "outliers." Make Joe Manchin answer questions about where he stands on this. Make Pryor have to comment on it. Every last one of them could be forced to explain how or why their mayor, the guy who is running the largest city in America, can justify hating kids.
It could be done. It just would take some will on the part of the national Republican party.

I hear what you're saying, but you're overselling it. The ONLY Republican they voted for was Rudy Giuliani, and they only re-elected him because things were going so well when he was up for re-election.
Bloomberg was not really a Republican, and everybody knew it. He had been a Democrat for 40 years and only ran as a Republican so that he wouldn't have to compete with the other Democrats. And, Hell, he couldn't even maintain the pretense for his full term before declaring himself an Independent.
NYC would have voted for him if he ran as a Democrat. Because, on the whole, DEMOCRATS!!!

Imagine something like a $5k tax credit for private school tuition, and allow other people to give "scholarships" that can also get a tax credit.
AZ has a similar system, I give money to friends/family members schools that have their child attend and I get a dollar for dollar tax credit towards my state income taxes and that money goes to their tuition. The teachers union hates it, but it's become incredibly popular.
This would take control away from the DeBlasio's of the world, and who knows, maybe the GOP could make real gains in minority communities.

Perhaps a better way to put it is that the educational establishment has designed a system where competence is of marginal importance.
Whether you are a good or bad teacher in a public school won't have a lot of impact on your life (compared to say a good or bad software engineer). So there are good public school teachers, but the bad ones that should be forced out aren't and the average ones have little reason to try harder outside of a personal moral vision...

That's nice.
Is he going to do anything substantial? He is the Governor. There is probably state property in New York City that he could make available to the Charter schools. He could probably get legislation to redirect state funds that would otherwise go to fund DiBlasio's pet projects or favorite cronies and use that to support the charter schools.
Cuomo could create something like TAMS at Potsdam, Plattsburgh or Oswego to offer a way out for some kids.

I personally expect Cuomo to do nothing except talk.

Anybody remember the DC voucher program ? Obama started moving to kill that his first year in office.
And the result ? Overwhelming minority support for Obama in 2012.
I'll show an interest in helping poor minorities when poor minorities show an interest in helping themselves. The ballot box would be a fine place to start. Until then, a shit I do not give.

I looked into it a couple of times during periods of funemployment, and the states I've lived in won't let me so much as substitute a math class unless I first spend five figures getting a piece of paper that says I've undergone sufficient Marxist indoctrination at an accredited university.
My grandmother taught hundreds of kids--black and white--to read despite not having a B.A. (But she didn't have to teach Gaia worship or sexual practices.)

"BUT you can get equality another way. Shut down all the good schools, and everyone gets the same useless crappy education. EQUALITY!"
Always excepting the hyper-expensive private schools to which DeBlasio's rich liberal supporters send their kids.

A few years ago Bill Gates sponsored a survey of the American education system. They concluded that the quality of the average teacher in the US is pretty good. They also concluded that having an exceptionally good or an exceptionally bad teacher can make a big difference in outcome.
Their recommendation was that the worst 15% of teachers should be fired and replaced with average teachers. Given the number of unemployed people with teaching certificates, that really shouldn't be all that hard to do. Oh, yeah. Unions.

Do you really think that Cuomo will actually give anything but lip service to those kids? I mean, this is not something important like rushing a bill through the legislature to make all the State Police pistols illegal and then arbitrarily and illegally declaring that the law will not be enforced as written.

However, it would seem to me that a way to fund these charter schools privately and show their success to the world would have a leveraging effect. The schools would help to raise up those children to be come educated and just may make some positive changes, breaking the cycle of stupidy, and making independent thinkers.
And in other way, people can stick it to this narcissistic and corrupt leader who likes to destroy rather than build.
