Obama at USAFA: A follow-up [Fritzworth]
— Open Blogger

Bumped by Ace. I stepped on this earlier.

As per my live-blogging link in the headlines to the right, I attended the 2012 graduation ceremonies at the US Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs today, and the commencement speaker was President Barack Obama. The full as-prepared transcript is here. I'm just going to cite one excerpt below -- the one that caused my wife to lean over to me and say, "Does he see no irony in what he's saying?"

There are many sources of American power -— diplomatic, economic and the power of our ideals. And we’ve got to use them all. And the good news is, today we are.

Around the world, the United States is leading once more. From Europe to Asia, our alliances are stronger than ever. Our ties with the Americas are deeper. WeÂ’re setting the agenda in the region that will shape our long-term security and prosperity like no other -- the Asia Pacific.

WeÂ’re leading on global security -- reducing our nuclear arsenal with Russia, even as we maintain a strong nuclear deterrent; mobilizing dozens of nations to secure nuclear materials so they never fall into the hands of terrorists; rallying the world to put the strongest sanctions ever on Iran and North Korea, which cannot be allowed to threaten the world with nuclear weapons.

We are leading economically -- forging trade pacts to create new markets for our goods; boosting our exports, stamped with three proud words -- Made in America. WeÂ’re expanding exchanges and collaborations in areas that people often admire most about America -- our innovation, our science, our technology.

WeÂ’re leading on behalf of human dignity and on behalf of freedom -- standing with the people of the Middle East and North Africa as they seek their rights; preventing a massacre in Libya with an international mission in which the United States -- and our Air Force -- led from the front. WeÂ’re leading global efforts against hunger and disease. And weÂ’ve shown our compassion, as so many airmen did in delivering relief to our neighbors in Haiti when they were in need and to our Japanese allies after the earthquake and tsunami.

Because of this progress, around the world there is a new feeling about America. I see it everywhere I go, from London and Prague, to Tokyo and Seoul, to Rio and Jakarta. ThereÂ’s a new confidence in our leadership. And when people around the world are asked, which country do you most admire, one nation comes out on top -- the United States of America.

Those of you who think that there is "a new confidence" around the world in US leadership, please raise your hand. I think there's a definite change of opinion around the world about America, but it's not in the way that Obama says.

It is worth reading the whole thing -- it is, I think, Obama's attempt at a 'morning in America' speech. And, as with much of what Obama says, it's just hard to take seriously. ..fritz..

Some bullcrap about how challenging things were when their class started at the Academy in 2008 but things were better now.   I do not know how my dad can subject himself to the drivel that is TV news, but at least he votes conservative.

His 'awesome sounding, but totally bullshit' speeches may work in places where nobody knows whats going on n the world outside their own anus like detroit, union halls, n jersey shore, but id say he picked the wrong crowd for this truckload of bs. That excerpt, to use a clumsy sports analogy, was like spiking the football in front of your own goalpost after running 70 yards the wrong way. That series of fantasies does not even rise to the level of being wrong. Were I on the tribunal for servicemen who had thrown fruits and vegetables during that speech, I would vote for a $1 fine and a letter of mild reproach to be mis-filed immediately. Obama is a fabulest of the lowest order, a clumsy and inarticulate, amoral, dishonest charlatan, a cad, a bounder, not even a bounder, he's not that energetic. If Obama were a gemstone he'd be degraded granite. If he had half a mind it would be out looking for the other half. 86 Wow! What a speech! I'm sure every cadet there felt the same tingle I felt today! It was absolutely mellifluous, and I don't use that word very often! It was brilliant, it was inspired, it was stirring and by God it had a deep poetic, almost mythical quality to it. I haven't felt more proud of President Obama in quite some time. He looked Presidential, he looked like a Commander in Chief worthy to be followed into battle by the nation's finest! He was firey, he was passionate, he looked like the charismatic and polished leader that he is! Years from now, we will all remember where we were when he gave this speech. This speech above speeches with it's soaring rhetoric and absolutely flawless delivery was beyond a thousand points if light and re-established that America really is that shining city on the hill...(wipes spittle from chin with Kleenex). It's golden, beautifully crafted speeches like this one that will absolutely put Obama back in the White House. It's speeches like this that got him there in the first place. Mitt Romney's speeches look coarse and stiff. Romney doesn't posses the gift of oratory that President Obama has. Even Bill Clinton relied on a more folksy, parochial style. Obama is truly esoteric and just head and shoulders above any other President in history when it comes to delivering memorable, beautiful, powerful speeches.

192 112 My neighbor recently questioned a local restaurant owner about the illegals working in the kitchen. The owner denied that illegals worked there. Local citizens in my town cannot find employment. My neighbor threatened to call immigration on restaurant owner. A few says later the restaurant had all new workers in the kitchen.

The last time you told that "story", the restaurant closed down.

I know it's hard to keep your stories straight, but try a little harder next time, OK?

LOL - that was last week. I used to work with a guy like Lampshade. After listening to his tale of the traffic ticket and his witty remark to the cop that got the whole room laughing, I wen't over to the copy of Readers Digest where he got the story and pointed it out to him.

195 I remember the time I was in this Mexican restaurant, alone, and came up with a story about how I scolded the owner for hiring illegals and from my chair called INS. Well, you can imagine they rounded everone up and took them to Mexico. The next day it was an Amish gift shop. True story.

I was thinking about slitting my wrists, but the wife just went to Whataburger to pick up a Chop House  Cheddar burger. I think I'll hold on for a little while. It's the small things that make life doable.

If Texas secedes, I'll be happier than a dead pig in the sunshine.

199 Nice speech by Bush!

200 Well, you can tell Zoomies anything: the Air Force trains 'em to be enthusiastic for the program, whatever the program may be.

The good news is that by the time the new lieutenants are captains, they'll be utter cynics.

201 Maybe things have changed, but my dad was in the Air Force and all of our family friends are Republicans. I also have younger friends and acquaintances who went to the Academy and they're all Republicans as well.

202 The military-industrial complex just wants to kill all the brown people and steal their oil.  Which is also evil.  Oil, I mean.

203 Fritz, I was there too, and his speech sounded like a presentation of his updated resume with some pandering-to-the-military campaign promises thrown in. Our graduating family member said Obama was surprisingly small in person.

207 His appearance at the US Air Force Academy is disgraceful. As a Viet Nam era USAF veteran, I am disgusted by his speech and appearance at what should be a day of honor, remembrance and celebration. With his past lies and those of today, he has violated every Code of Honor revered in every military academy.

208 Coming home from a night shift at Walgreens, I found myself stuck on I-25 for half an hour!  Bastard!  Tired, needing to get home to catch 4 hours sleep before I had to go to another shift, I got to hang out on the interstate so this moron could get another "I support the troops" photo op.

I'm sending Romney another $50 tonight!

I'd like to listen to an entire speech by our President/SCFOAMF--I really would--all the way through.

But when I try my bullshit filters get totally clogged with fecal material within 90 seconds--tops.

213 Remember when Obama was running for president and he said he would reduce our nuclear arsenal, and other countries would be embarrassed and reduce theirs?  I never thought about using EMBARRASSMENT as a weapon.  I wonder how well it is working.

214 That speech actually reads like a real presidential speech instead of his usual dogmatic campaigning bullshit. If a real president were at the helm actually doing the things he says he's doing you might even believe it, but since it's Bammer doing the talking you know it's just all half-truths, lies and delusions.
