Obama: I Ate Dog Meat

The left continues to push the story of the Romneys traveling on vacation with the dog in a crate on the roof of their car for fundraising. They made a special screen for it.

I don't know why this is horrifying. Ever drive with a dog in the car? What is the first thing he does, and in fact the only thing he wants to do?

Stick his head out the window and feel the air rushing by.

This is well-nigh universal. Dogs dig this.

Anyway, if that's a story, why isn't young Barry Sotero's enjoyment of Dog, the Other Other White Meat?

With Lolo, I learned how to eat small green chill peppers raw with dinner (plenty of rice), and, away from the dinner table, I was introduced to dog meat (tough), snake meat (tougher), and roasted grasshopper (crunchy).

Seriously though, Dog isn't something I'd want to try (I'd imagine it'd taste like crap) but Id on't hold this against him.  What I hold against him is the abject hypocracy of mocking Romney for something that is ostensibly ok (dunno if it is, and don't care.) Heck yesterday I was a drug store and a lady wanted an eye dropper to drug her cat so she could move it to her new house.  With animals you do what you gotta do.

Go pheasant hunting in Neb. or N.D. or S.D. and you will see guys pulling trailers that are nothing but a box with an air hole with three or four dogs in it. They are fine. My dog I had as a kid used to climb right over me when we were in the truck and stick half his damn body out the window, it was all I could do to keep the futten truck on the road.

Dog meat is seen as "good for man", ie. a virility enhancer. Most Viet women wont touch the stuff except at VERY special occasions. Many Viet men have objections to it as well.

To that end, the clever Viets invented "mock dog", which is pork, heavily marinated until it is a dark colour like dog meat, and then cooked and served in much the same way. You get to notice the difference in smell and texture pretty quickly, but you have to be careful at a full-on party, especially after the third or fourth round of almost-raw-alcohol toasts, as some of the locals do have a wicked sense of humour.

We were all supposed to practice being prepared if there's a big earth quake and the National Guard is doing all sorts of exercises etc. Anyway, a couple of my friends from my old ward were posting about it today: Friend 1: "How'd that mock earthquake go for you? It has to do with the risk involved of strapping a carrier large enough to hold an Irish Setter onto the roof of the car. I've seen enough things fall off of cars over the years to never ever risk a living thing that way. He should have strapped the luggage to the roof and put the dog in the car. Second, the dog was not "fine." It had severe diarrhea en route. At that point, I'd be finding a veterinarian for my dog, not hosing it off and shoving it back onto the roof.

322 Y-not,  I respectfully disagree.  There is an aversion to eating companion animals in our culture.  It is repulsive to Europeans and North Americans.

Romney did not put his dog on the car roof out of cruelty.  He made a special carrier for it and according to Ann Romney the dog liked it.

However,  it was years ago and I imagine he wouldn't do the same thing now,  having room in a car since the boys are grown.

Actually I did have to hunt in N. D. the 1st time we went to S.D. to hunt, you're right we didn't know anyone, had been hunting in Neb and Iowa for about 10 yrs previous. We were told "no way" everywhere we went in S. D. we had hunted without paying in Iowa for so long we didn't get it. Wised up pretty quick. Don't waste time anymore just reserve time now. We still do get quite a few here in Mi. but not anywhere near like there.

I actually do think the dog-on-the-roof story is awful and  the part where the Romneys hosed the poor dog off at a gas station adds to the awfulness, but point well-made, Ace, regarding O's eating habits in third-world countries.

I actually think this is a way to blunt the coming comparison between the relative wealth of Romney and Obama. Whats just now starting to occur to people not paying close attention is that, as a practical matter, the Obama family has no idea how and average American working class family lives or sometimes struggles.

Obama needs to convince people that he was once so poor he had to eat dogs, rats and howler monkeys, so he feels your struggle to provide food for your family. Not like that extremely conservative rich guy who tortured his dog and never worked a day in his life.

Also, Allah or someone mentioned that the Obama line of that story as willful animal abuse amounting to torture for a Romney family laugh drives people insane with anger in focus groups. That is unsurprising.
