Obama: "I Tried Real Hard"
— Ace

"I suspect that most people in Cincinnati would acknowledge that I've tried real hard, and we haven't gotten the Republicans to engage on a whole range of issues that, I wish had happened," Obama said in an interview with WLWT-TV in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Via Hot Air.

He has a weak hand to play, so his appeals tend to sound, well, weak. Negotiating from a point of weakness and such. And essentially begging the country's indulgence and patience for his poor performance.

Is this working? Some good quotes of the day from Saturday. This one alarmed me some.

Obama runs even with, or slightly ahead of, Republican rival Mitt Romney in poll after poll. Campaign strategists debate the reasons.

They might include ObamaÂ’s personal likability, gaps in RomneyÂ’s strategy or AmericansÂ’ grudging acceptance of a new normal in which millions of jobs are gone for good and no single person is responsible.

If high unemployment “was a killer, he’d already be dead,” said Republican pollster and consultant Mike McKenna. “The survey data tells you he’s not dead.”

The problem with that line is that Jimmy Carter wasn't "dead" at this point in 1980, according to polls -- and yet, actually, he was.

Larry Kudlow shares the belief that Obama's goose is already cooked.

[O]bamaÂ’s goose may already be cooked.

The Joint Economic Committee (JEC), spearheaded by Texas congressman Kevin Brady, put out a report saying that the Obama recovery now ranks dead last in modern times. ThatÂ’s a real milestone in the post-WWII era. ItÂ’s ten out of ten for both jobs and economic growth. According to the Bureau of Economic Analysis, real GDP has expanded only 6.7 percent over the eleven-quarter recovery since the recession ended. The Reagan recovery at the same stage had increased by 17.6 percent. The Clinton recovery by 8.7 percent.

As for jobs, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the number of private-sector jobs has grown by only 4.1 percent since the cyclical low point. ReaganÂ’s record was 10.7 percent.

So much for Obamanomics. DidnÂ’t work. Still isnÂ’t working. As the JEC put it, spending stimulus, housing bailouts, auto bailouts, financial bailouts, cash for clunkers, cash for caulkers, and $5 trillion in deficit spending left the Obama recovery dead last in modern times.

For Obama to win, it would require that people decide that they simply do not care that his presidency has overseen a stagnant economy that actually seems to be deterioriating. That hasn't been the case in the past, and I don't know it would be the case now.

Flashback: In 2004, Obama dismissed the Republicans' attempt to suggest the economy was improving. After all, the unemployment rate was 5.6% and we'd just added 310,000 jobs in a month. Far too soon to say we'd made progress, he urged.

9 The criminals have been marching across the country, making their way from state to state, persuading victims that a special federal government assistance program -- sometimes described as a bailout authorized by President Barack Obama's administration -- is available to pay their utility bills. Victims are given bank account and routing numbers to use when paying their bills online, but only after they "register" by surrendering their Social Security numbers and other personal information.

11 After the apotheosis of 2008 and the steady stream of racism accusations for the the slightest lack of enthusiasm (e.g., "cool" is now verboten), I wouldn't be surprised if your average person is afraid to say what they really think about the SCOAMF. Or rather than afraid, they'd rather just "not have that conversation". So they mouth the conventional wisdom (as set by the media) and will hopefully vote otherwise.

17 Denise Rich, the wealthy socialite and former wife of pardoned billionaire trader Marc Rich, has given up her U.S. citizenship - and, with it, much of her U.S. tax bill.

Rich, 68, a Grammy-nominated songwriter and glossy figure in Democratic and European royalty circles, renounced her American passport in November, according to her lawyer.

Her maiden name, Denise Eisenberg, appeared in the Federal Register on April 30 in a quarterly list of Americans who renounced their U.S. citizenship and permanent residents who handed in their green cards.

By dumping her U.S. passport, Rich likely will save tens of millions of dollars or more in U.S. taxes over the long haul, tax lawyers say.

"I urge my colleagues from both sides of the aisle to vote in favor of my bill in order to keep U.S. citizens safe from harassment and to work toward making America bully-free," she added. 70 The problem for us is that the Democrats have large pools of ideologically rigid supporters. You have baby boomers who never grew out of their filthy hippie inclinations. You have the Jewish vote - people who live like Conservatives (aside from the abortions) but vote like Marxists. And in Obama's case in particular, you have the black vote. Those all go in his column without any reservation or hesitation. Then there are the undead, who don't vote in huge numbers, but vote strategically for Democrats. Our voters are often more fickle. They don't protest vote their party. They go right ahead and sink straight to the bottom, even the "moderate" Democrats, content in the belief that anything that goes wrong was ordained by the cosmos.

One interesting point is that a bit of the Reagan recovery (on the back-end into the 2nd term) could be attributed to US-instigated currency manipulation.  I'm thinking here of the Fall 1985 Plaza Accords that caused the Japanese Yen to practically treble in value in almost no time flat (lending plenty of support to the contention that the Japanese had themselves been the currency manipulators).

Nowadays the US Treasury seems to be doing all it can to bring down the dollar's value, hoping against hope that exports will help push the needle of US growth and Dear Leader's reelection chances.  And yet...  and yet...  we're still forced to embrace the low-growth suckitude.

Are the conclusions so difficult to draw from this compare/contrast?

One thing you have to give the MFM: they do expend time and effort to do research when they want to, even if their chosen targets are usually Repubs or anyone who dares oppose Lord Barack. Bloggers, on the other hand, tend to link to each other, patting themselves on the back for saying snarky things and engaging in anal-ysis.

When I see Erick Ericson pontificating about How it Oughtta Be, or Poppin' Fresh chuckling fatly about the day's "Obamateurism," I want to vomit. This is the stuff that means nothing. That's doubly true when, "in fairness," they let his real felonies and impeachable crimes slide.

Between these eunuchs and those in Congress -- I'm talkin' about you, Bitch McConnell and Weepy Boner -- Romney doesn't stand a chance. What the unwashed masses (a/k/a the 52%) see is endless hymns of praise for Bark Obama from the media, no calls for accountability, and only the weakest hints of opposition.

I'd love to see that change, somehow. But realism tells me it ain't gonna happen, and we'll be having at least four more years of the same shit.

A multistate identity theft scam that claims President Barack Obama will pay your utility bills appears to have widened.

According to MSNBC.com, more than 2,000 customers in Tampa, Fla., fell for the fake offer last week.

The scheme was first reported in May, when Dallas-based Atmos Energy warned its 3 million customers in 12 states that scammers had been asking for Social Security numbers to enroll in the faux federal program. According to the pitch—distributed via email, Facebook, text message, phone and, in some cases, door-to-door sales—the government would pay a month of energy costs through credits offered by the Obama administration.

122 When's the last time the Republicans have nominated a true northerner? Gerald Ford? I think I lot of suburban northerners simply won't vote for a southerner Republican who the media can paint as a redneck. In a bad economy with a blue blood Yankee running, these suburban soccer mom types are going to find Romney non-threatening enough on social issues to vote for him. (Yeah, Bush I could be considered a Yankee, and in a good economy he did quite well in those northern suburbs.)

46 I think Carter was ahead at this point"

Carter was up by 9 points at this point in the election cycle. If Romney has it even at this point, it means he has this thing pretty much sewn up unless he runs out of cash or has a major skeleton in the closet.

An actual skeleton of a minor in Romney's closet might be a problem. Otherwise, Obama is toast.   Everything Obama says is right out of "The Big Book of Quotes for Losers".  The President of the United States, X. Cuses O'Blamer, is actually looking for the pity vote.  Pathetic.  I'm not kidding.

Posted by: LASue at July 09, 2012 10:28 AM (pWeX5)

133 Rasmussen has 80% of LV believing that electing Romney is effectively repealing ObamaCare. He also shows 53% wanted it repealed (even after the SCOTUS ruling). Romney now has his wedge issue. Add energy independence and tax reform, both issues where Obama is vulnerable, and you have a winning campaign thrust. Romney can do this. I've bet against him before and been wrong. Can't say I'm thrilled about all his positions, but the man does know how to win.

Posted by: DriveBy at July 09, 2012 10:30 AM (SHgGO)

134 I think Obama is getting ready to have an "It's not easy...sniff...sniff.." moment, just like Hillary did back during the 2008 primaries. Big old tears running down his face, as he cries about how much the Republicans hate him, and won't work with him to restore this country.

Posted by: DaveinNC at July 09, 2012 10:46 AM (boNGU)

135 DaveinNC, 02:46 - Yeah, isn't it sad? Planted in all the President's attempts to run against an obstructionist Congress is the assumption that presidents' opponents usually roll over for them. For me, it's the arguments made by the President's supporters that paint him as an ineffective leader: Sure, things aren't going so great, but that's just because he hasn't had the chance to affect things much. Guess what, guys? Successful presidents have all these obstacles, and they succeed anyway!

Posted by: JPS at July 09, 2012 10:50 AM (tn14L)

136 There are two scenarios here in play for the election.
The first, and most ideal, is the Carter one, where voters are just waiting until November so they can get rid of this bozo for ANYBODY else, but aren't passionate about it. Just grimly, quietly determined. If asked, they might say "oh yeah, sure, I'm not a racist, he's great," but they'll pull that lever for Romney even though they aren't hot on the guy.
The other, and most likely I fear, is that people really are just going to vote for Obama again because he's black and because Romney is white and Republican and Mormon and therefore scary.

137 I tried real hard, Mister Cowboy.

Posted by: Hans Gruber at July 09, 2012 10:53 AM (exvgC)

138 See, the thing is President Obama should never have been elected in 2008. Never before in the history of this country has a man been elected for promising to raise taxes, drive up energy costs, and plainly state he wants to redistribute wealth. Never. He shouldn't have won. The nation went crazy.
I don't see much that indicates it has gotten any more sane. YOu can't really use 2010 as an example, because people were so pissed about the health insurance bill, TARP bailouts, and stimulus. They wanted to punish congress, and kick incumbents out. That doesn't necessarily reflect on the president.
President Obama seems to have successfully mesmerized people into blaming Bush for the economy. If he can pull that off, then the economy is irrelevant to the election.
Think about that a while.

144 Obama is polling roughly 47% in all swing states, save NV, in samples that are mostly registered voters. If you go to RCP and look at the individual poll breakdowns, Romney ties or wins in all of the likely samples, before the undecided break is factored in.

There is a large built-in undercurrent of voter sentiment away from Obama; the head-to-heads are useless right now. Look at indicators, like today's "change for the bad" poll until the end of summer or, at the least, until after the Olympics. It's all in flux until the barrage hits.

That said, I do wonder if Romney's outpreform in MI is directly due to his dad's legacy, or an indirect effect whereby it's socially acceptable to support a Romney. NB: MI decoupled and shifted right after WI...
