Obama Quietly Revises Growth Projections... Downwards
— Ace

Shhhh. We just have a presidential election coming up. We wouldn't want the media broadcasting state secrets about the most relevant and pressing problem we face at the moment.

In its latest update, ObamaÂ’s Office of Management and Budget slashed its GDP forecast for 2012, to 2.3% from 2.7%, and for 2013, to 2.7% from 3.0%. Pretty tepid growth.

In the near-term, where we have the greatest knowledge (still sketchy, but the greatest knowledge, since we can just ballpark guess it will be something like current situations), he revises his forecasts downward.

But then, two to five years from now, when our knowledge becomes almost nonexistent, he confidently projects a big bouncing baby boy boomtime recovery, weighing in at a respectable 4.1% in hazy 2015.

Okay. Sure.

How does the White House's "projections" match up against organizations not directly involved in seeking the reelection of their boss?

The correlation is poor.

[T]he IMF recently put out its extended forecast for the U.S economy, and its sees markedly slower growth than the White House: 2.0% in 2012, 2.3% in 2013, 2.8% in 2014, 3.3% in 2015, 3.4% in 2016, and 3.3% in 2017. In total, the White House sees the U.S. economy generating about $1.5 trillion more in real GDP growth during the next six years than the IMF does.

...

And certainly there are mainstream economists out there more gloomy than the IMF. The economic team at JPMorgan, for instance, sees the economy growing at just 1.9% this year and next.

And, as Pethokoukis points out, those projections are all already biased to the optimistic side of things, assuming that this is in fact a real but weak "recovery" which will continue for a long time, rather than, say, bouncing along the bottom in a protracted depression.

1 Remember, the cost of Obamacare was based on 4-5% GDP every year. We'll be lucky to see half that.

8 There will be no growth until folks know who is going to be in the WH for the next four years.  If you run a business, you need facts to use in forecasting your costs.  This is the one bright spot of CJ Roberts reversing himself on the ACA, it made all those businesses who were waiting for the law to go down to now wait for the November elections to see how the ACA will be affected.

35 Keep in mind that these 2% growth numbers are predicated on continued 8-10% of GDP deficit spending. As soon as the deficit spending gets pared back even by as little as $100 billion, those estimates drop by a half percent.

If Romney comes in and slashes the hell out of the job killing regulations, there's a chance we can grow out of the deficits. With gradual entitlement reform, of course. That must be done.

After authorities imposed unprecedented security measures on the 2012 statewide exams, test scores tumbled across Pennsylvania, The Inquirer has learned.

At some schools, Pennsylvania Secretary of Education Ronald Tomalis said, the drops are "noticeable" - 25 percent or more.

148 RELATED TOPICS EGYPTRAMZ JALALCANDID CAMERA In a place where kidnappings have become an all-too common reality, one TV channel is trying to turn the terrifying situation into Ramadan entertainment fodder. Egypt’s al-Hayat TV has begun airing “Ramz, The Desert Fox,” which pranks celebrities into thinking they’ve been kidnapped in the Sinai, in a bid for Ramadan viewers. The show has become a not-so-unlikely hit in Egypt, according to Arabic media outlet Al Arabiya, with the laughs coming courtesy of the country’s prankster in chief, Ramz Jalal. On the show, Arab celebrities are flown to Cairo and put on a bus headed to the resort town of Ghardaka on the Red Sea. Along the way, Jalal and his crew of “terrorists” hijack the bus, blow up part of it, and grab and blindfold the unsuspecting celebrity. The mark is then subjected to a fake gunfight, with the camera rolling the whole time. Once the blindfold is pulled off comes the reveal, with the celebrities shown the camera and crew and let it on the joke. Yeah Romney's assertion that Arab Culture is warped is just so far off???????

Story: http://tinyurl.com/cyptnov

If questioned,  frame it not as an issue that even mentions the palestinians, but frame it entirely from the paradigm that as Americans we believe that the best success comes from a society where all citizens, not just men, have rights and are free to be educated and the pursuit of happiness.

The subtext remains and it's not only a strong endorsement of democratic Israel, but pits support for palestine against support for women's rights.

167 What's wrong with having a lawyer that fights for our side in the Senate,

1) There are too many lawyers in the US Congress as it is.
2) The man is a complete cypher- to my knowledge he's never even been on a city council.  His positions as Solicitor General for the State of Texas may or may-not be his core beliefs.  Based on his court record, he's willing to go all-out for whoever his client is.  That's desirable in an attorney, but only desirable in a politician as long as believes your side is his client.

But, then, our only four choices were:

1) A somewhat squishy Republican w/ a mediocre record
2) A Lawyer with no elective experience whatsoever.
3) The man Liberal Enough to be elected Mayor in Dallas.
4) A Sports-caster.

Seriously.

According to the University of Texas student newspaper:

"For Progressive Democrats, David Dewhurst is the best option.

Dewhurst publicly affirmed his support for a guest-worker program in 2007. His more recent anti-immigrant rhetoric represents his response to Cruz attacking his conservative credentials – not a surprising shift for an office-seeking candidate. But if Dewhurst is elected to a six-year term and Democrats make significant electoral gains in the nation’s legislative body (likely with the President on the ballot), the Lieutenant Governor’s prior support for immigration reform might re-emerge. In addition, the six-year term will permit Dewhurst to work with President Barack Obama (presuming he wins a second term) on immigration reform, since Dewhurst wouldn’t face re-election until 2018.

Ted Cruz, on the other hand, has not exhibited progressive behavior at all."

Ahhh, if only it were true.

189 1/3 of Obama's stimulus was payroll tax cuts so if you didn't see that its because you don't have a job. About 65 million saw those tax cuts.

If he's not the incumbent, vote for him anyway. Always replace the incumbent. Always.

192 Heh. Yeah, not many folks have accused me of being very ladylike, at least when it comes to my potty mouth. *blush* Sounds like my wife. Daughter of a DC cop and sister to a Naval Academy grad. A tongue that would take the paint right off your house.

Allen G ,

Cruz will do fine and is a shit load better than that establishment repub Dewhurst. I am going to invest serious $ in promoting a tea party candidate to primary Dewhurst and Dan Patrick.

196 Is society so far gone, are we so corrupted, that the demonstrably destructive stagnation and widespread poverty that any kind of socialism delivers can scarcely convince a bare majority to turn away from it? That even faced with the setting sun of progressively lower expectations for every future generation, that they, in greed, arrogance, malice, envy, and outright laziness, cannot En masse reject the poison which is the collectivist structured society for mankind? They cannot look at their children and do the right thing for them, and instead continue to spend their taxes decades before they will ever make a dime to pay them?

If this vote isn't a landslide. I will harbor deep pessimistic visions of our future for a long time.

198 First of all, Romney lied about that. The Palestinians have no culture. A death cult maybe.

Posted by: WalrusRex at July 30, 2012 05:41 PM (Hx5uv)

Paul Newman played a "Palestinian" in Exodus.  My, how times and language have changed been perverted beyond recognition or reason.  You're certainly correct about the savage, belligerent, violent Fakestinians, though.  They are throwbacks of throwbacks who have already been thrown back and dragged down into the intellectual abyss.

This world is really cruisin' for a bruisin' ... at warp speed.

199 I think you will be pleasenatly surprised with Cruz and he will exceed your expecation.  Every candidate has some risk.  But between the two, I'm not sure it is much of a contest as to who would vote more conservatively.  As to who can make the case for their position - Dewhurst is just not a persusaive person.  That isn't the most important thing, but it does matter.  I think also matters that Dewhurst sees the Senate seat as an end to his career - a finishing touch.  Cruz, I suspect has much grander ambitions, not just personally, but within the movement itself.  That could be perceived as a negative, but I view it as a positive.

Um, you do know that the tax rates weren't reduced?   Giving someone an extra few dollars per paycheck but not reducing income tax liability is not a tax cut.

Problem for the SCOAMF and his ball-washers, like you, is that he over-promised and under-delivered.  Not only that but between JAN 2009 and JAN 2011, the Democrats had overwhelming majorities in both the House of Representatives and the Senate.

Posted by: Retired Buckeye Cop at July 30, 2012 01:57 PM (3P3G8)

203 FICA rates were reduced on your take home pay, pal. Some GOPers argued for matching employer FICA cuts as well. I am not saying the stimulus was all that great but it cost 1/2 of Bush's fucked up Iraq adventure and it stayed in the USA.

204

1592% 1Q 12
1.5% 2Q 12
EQUALS
1.75% 1HALF 12

To get 2.3% will require

2.85% 2HALF 12

REALLY?

I did the math too, and that's what it is.  2.85% GDP for the next two quarters is mighty optimistic for an economy headed down into recession.  Of course, the President of the United States wouldn't have his Ministry of Truth feed us self-serving propaganda, i.e. lie to us, just to get himself re-elected, would he?

Posted by: Chas at July 30, 2012 02:18 PM (AZudj)

205 Thanks for doing the math, I was thinking it was something absurdly optimistic like that. I'm convinced that we're already contracting and probably have been since last quarter, but we won't learn about it for years.

207 Obama Quietly Revises Growth Projections... Downwards

As short a time ago as February, the Ministry of Plenty had issued a promise (a 'categorical pledge' were the official words) that there would be no reduction of the chocolate ration during 1984. Actually, as Winston was aware, the chocolate ration was to be reduced from thirty grammes to twenty at the end of the present week. All that was needed was to substitute for the original promise a warning that it would probably be necessary to reduce the ration at some time in April.
