Isn't the corollary to that, "The future must belong to those who respect Islam"?

How far are we going to take this, exactly?
The future must not belong to those who slander the prophet of Islam. But to be credible, those who condemn that slander must also condemn the hate we see in the images of Jesus Christ that are desecrated, or churches that are destroyed, or the Holocaust that is denied. Let us condemn incitement against Sufi Muslims, and Shia pilgrims. It is time to heed the words of Gandhi: “Intolerance is itself a form of violence and an obstacle to the growth of a true democratic spirit.” Together, we must work towards a world where we are strengthened by our differences, and not defined by them. That is what America embodies. That’s the vision we will support.
Interesting that he sees an equivalence between "slandering" Mohammad and actual violence and mayhem.
The Islamist radicals agree. Obama is adding his voice to that bloody choir -- that "slandering" the prophet is precisely equal to murder and mayhem. Rather than challenging that mindset -- that free speech about a man who's been dead for 800 years is the equivalent of violence and bloody riot -- he endorses it.
So it's just a case of "We started it," isn't it?
By the way, after his eulogy to Chris Stevens, he then went right to the YouTube video, suggesting, once again, that it's all about the video.

The equivocation Obama makes here is incorrect. In all the examples he gives, Muslims are the primary actors.
A likely-atheist European draws a cartoon of Mohammed -- the Muslim world goes up in flames. Embassies are burned, people murdered, flags torched, riots from dusk to dawn.
An atheist artist puts a crucifix in a jar of his own urine. The Christian world responds with stern condemnations and some charity pot lucks.
The Muslim world sees the burning of churches and synagogues, the murder of "infidels" and "apostates," the denial of past genocides and the encouragement of future ones, and the destruction of monuments of immense historical significance as justified and viable responses to a pen and ink drawing.
As other commenters noted, when Christians protested that Piss Christ was PUBLICALLY FUNDED (in other words, taxpayer subsidized), they were called backwards neanderthals who had no appreciation for culture or art. Did Christians riot, murder, rape and pillage? No.
There's no equivalency there.

That is what we saw play out in the last two weeks, as a crude and disgusting video sparked outrage throughout the Muslim world. Now, I have made it clear that the United States government had nothing to do with this video, and I believe its message must be rejected by all who respect our common humanity.
It is an insult not only to Muslims, but to America as well -- for as the city outside these walls makes clear, we are a country that has welcomed people of every race and every faith. We are home to Muslims who worship across our country. We not only respect the freedom of religion, we have laws that protect individuals from being harmed because of how they look or what they believe. We understand why people take offense to this video because millions of our citizens are among them.
You know that city outside these walls? Guess which religion made the population drop by about 3000 or so.

I don't really have a big problem with his comments. Yeah, there is a difference between speech and violence, but look at the audience. That distinction will be lost on them.

I am just not sure where our President is taking this.
It is one thing to discuss "freedom of religion" with respect to the individual American, who has the right to the free practice of religion, without hindrance of the State. But to say that we can't "slander" Islam, begs the question, "just what is slander with respect to Islam?" Where does free speech begin and end with respect to this religion?
Will there be legislation or an Executive Order defining this nebulous quantity called 'slander'?
Because if you read your New Testament, Jesus Christ explicitly said there would be no prophets to follow Him, that He was the Last Word with respect to God. ( Which does put the Apostle Paul in a bit of a bad light, but that's another bone to pick at a later date.)
If you are a Jew, you are free to reject Christ and think as you please. If you are a practitioner of another religion (such as Islam), again you are free to think as you please. But if you are a Christian, you frankly cannot accept Islam at all. To an honest believing Christian, Islam is an apostasy.
I am not willing to commit the United States to war over a religious apostasy (the Crusades tried this and succeeded and failed to various degrees). But if a Christian preacher were to stand in his pulpit on a Sunday morning and say that Islam is an apostasy to his faith, he would be right. Is this slander? If someone puts a You Tube video up and says this so the whole world can see it, is this slander?

Not really. The Conquista ("Reqconquista" is the idea behind La Raza) was in the name of Spain, not Christ. The Crusades were not about forcing anyone to Christianity, but (primarily) about political conquest and (secondarily) about protecting the Christian pilgrims to the Holy Land.

Okay- also not about Christianity, but Spanish Sovereignty. Well, European Sovereignty. Charles Martel and those who followed him cared more about keeping Spain in European hands than whether or not the people who ruled it were Christian.
Thus the reason they didn't kick out all of the Jews (Spain at that time even kind of liked them, IIRC) and Muslims (primarily Turks and Saracens, I think). They just fought until they won control of the land back.
The thing is, when you get down to it, most of "Christian Aggression" in history is neither Christian nor all that aggressive (in relative terms). The closest you get is the 3rd and 4th Crusades, and even those were more political than religious in nature. The only reason the various monarchs asked the Popes for declarations of Crusade was so they could convince their people to work together. Otherwise the French and the English were more likely to fight each other than the Islamic nations.

Whether the Muslim Brotherhood is then built up into a vociferous enemy of Western values remains to be seen. There are also signs that the Brotherhood is now being contrasted with fundamentalist Islam and is being portrayed as a more "reasonable" alternative.
What IS clear is that much of the current violence, like the wars themselves – and ultimately the phony war on terror itself – are being souped up by the West. It is hard to see through all the layers of lies but the idea that the CIA has lost its "eyes" because of the destruction of an apparently non-existent US embassy really doesn't pass the smell test.
It is evidence of the desperate arrogance of the US Intel community that after repeated exposures by the alternative media (that's us Morons) it simply does not seem to care anymore. Nope. In fairness, syntactically he is referring "the images of Jesus Christ that are desecrated," i.e., the entire phrase must be read together. "That" introduces a restrictive (i.e., defining) clause, so that he's not referring to those images that are NOT desecrated.

There is no moral equivalence between Christianity and Islam. Indeed, most people miss that Jews and Christians coexisted in peace (well, more or less) for centuries before Islam tried to take over Jerusalem and kill everyone who wasn't Muslim.
Even then, when they were just demanding that "being a 'person of the book' tax" (whatever the F they call it), the Christian Nations kept their noses out of it.
It wasn't until the Turks, Moors, and Saracens started killing pilgrims that the Christian Nations had a problem. Thus the Crusades.

Spanish Inquisition was also about Spanish Sovereignty. Albeit under the guise of Christianity, so I'll probably have to allow that one. But the Papal Inquisition was much more restrained (relatively speaking) and stuck better to the spirit of the rules, whereas the Spaniards observed only the letter. More or less.
Notice that the Spanish Inquisition answered to the Spanish Crown, the Papal Inquisition answered to the Pope.

He's saying that the desecration of images of Jesus Christ show the hatred of Christianity (of those who desecrated the images), and must condemn that hate.
I'm no Obama fan, God knows, but what he said on this particular score (desecration of Christian images) was perfectly reasonable. He's trying to draw the equivalence between such desecration and criticism ("slander," as he calls it) of Islam. It's at this second point that he loses me.

Sadly, I was kind of aware of that in High School, but it didn't really sink in until I read Eric Flint's Ring of Fire books.
Note- don't read them for the History, they're not History books. But they get enough right that you can use them to guide actual historical inquiries using real history texts.

I know that if every Bible on Earth is destroyed, the word of God will live on through His believers. I know that no matter how many crucifixes are dipped in urine or how many blasphemers roam the Earth, God's promise is yet stronger.
Our God does not require that we walk on eggshells to receive His grace.
Our God and our faith are so strong that no other religion can destroy it.
The same, apparently, cannot be said of Islam and its followers.

You're only part right on the Spanish Inquisition. When it was controlled by the crown it did get out of hand. But when it first began it was controlled by the Church and answered to the Pope, and later on it again had its control returned to it. See Barack the problem is that you either have freedom or you don't how far one uses and abuses freedom is up to the individual, and unless they are doing unarguable public harm in the exercise thereof such as abuse of a child, enforced servitude inflicted we have a duty to not interfere by means of governmental control. Sure you can use social and peer pressure as an individual to influence but even that is without limit. You are equating murder with intolerance. You pay lip service to the idea that "we reject uncontrolled violence" but even that is loaded you are not vocally condemning "controlled political violence" or coercion through law or use of state sanctioned discrimination. The violation of sanctity of though and expression is abominable and frankly I must tell you YOU DISGUST me for your inability to decry coercive intent.
That speech in trying to curry calm & understanding from the violent culture that attacked our embassies for the utilization of a freedom you swore an oath to uphold and & defend *is* the false choice you so often use as a crutch. You do not have to apologize for offense to say that you understand their anger. You simply had to assert the invioability of our Diplomatic mission or the cessation of all further diplomatic contact until a resolution occurs. That was ALL that was called for nothing more. You go on to invoke the historic nature and precedent for our freedom w/out personalizing it & accept verbally that "we do not expect the same of you" to a world at large undermining the moral nature of arguing for freedom of speech

How's about YOU argue the American perspective on liberty for a change & accept that we as a people got a lot right before you drew your first breath and sanctity and invioability of faith and speech from government are one of those things. You incentivized more bad behavior for the Radical Muslims to try to game the hecklers' veto. You delivered nice words on the death of an American diplomat and then spoke in a way that should have terrified every lover of liberty as practiced here for ~220 years.

The recent US administrations willfully destabilized all of the Middle East, Obama gambling on enhancing the "Arab Spring" which, promoting the Saudi Wahhabi Muslim Brotherhood and al-Qaeda, effects the genocide policy against the indigenous Jews, Christians and many other minority religious peoples in Muslim nations. Our taxes are funding genocide even while weakening our own Constitution, no thanks to politicians. When we refuse to function constitutionally, we've lost the finest, best balanced means for governance ever devised.

Nov. 6th cannot come soon enough. I hope Romney is against this "blasphemy law" movement that O is pushing. But it's hard to tell since Romney is completely SILENT on this matter (please correct me if I'm wrong) and he was an a$$ to Pastor Terry Jones in '10 -- not telling him *not* to burn the Koran in so many words, but putting the deaths of soldiers on Terry Jones' hands. Doesn't fill me with a lot of confidence.
I really hate when Muslim sympathizers like O pretend they care about Christians being offended, too; he only adds that to get more on his side. I'm a Christian and I would rather put up with "Piss Christ" than have my freedom of speech taken away (just as long as the display of it isn't at tax-payer expense).

The world wide attacks by ‘tolerant’ muslims don’t faze Obama a bit. Which makes the coming election that much more important.
